ARROWHEAD
STATE TRAIL - thanks to the MN DNR 2/5/2010: Conditions:
good Trail groomed? yes Trail base: 4-6" Local snow depth
is 18-22"
The entire trail is being groomed twice weekly. There is ample snow base and
trail conditions are good. However, a
January 23-24 ice & snow storm left a considerable amount of brush and trees
over-hanging the trail. Trail width is
narrower in many places. Please use extreme caution and watch for overhanging
branches and brush. Use extra caution on corners and hills. UPDATED ARROWHEAD TRAIL REPORT?
ASH
RIVER/KABETOGAMA AREA - thanks to VTSI
2/4/2010: All trail reports from
the weekend were excellent. Conditions for the coming weekend appear excellent.
The temps are great for riding. Please read the National Park trail report for
the latest up to date info on some temporary closings due to research.
Lake travel is good to excellent. Please see National Park Service report at the
bottom of this page. UPDATED KAB/ASH RIVER REPORT?

Voyageurs Snowmobile Club 2/6/2010:LOTS OF WORK! The
amount of work that the snowstorm of two weeks ago produced was not really
evident on
the last trail report. The amount of hours club groomer operators and VNP
maintenance crews have put in is amazing.
The downed brush and trees seemed endless. The trails have really shaped up and
are looking great once again. Hats off
to all of you! Land based trails are in good to excellent condition. There are a
few active logging areas but even they have
adequate snow cover. Lake trails are a bit rough with the lack of grooming. But
we will be check ice again this coming week
and hope to have a groomer out on the lake trails soon. All of the lake trails
are open and staked.
This
coming Saturday, February 13th, is the Hot Dog Roast. FREE Hot Dogs with Coffee
and Hot Chocolate will be served at the
Hagerman/Arrowhead shelter from 1-3pm. Stop by and say Hi.

CRANE LAKE AREA -
thanks to Crane Lake Visitor & Tourism Bureau 1/23/2010:
Warmer temps last week compacted the trails nicely. Local clubs are still
grooming land trails on a normal schedule of
at least three times per week. It rained last night which made things a bit
slippery, but the rain has turned to snow and we are expected
to get 4-10 inches of snow.....that's what the folks who "know" are
saying. Everyone in the business hopes they are correct. Lake riding
remains in good condition, and the trails have deteriorated a bit, but are in
good shape, and there are few complaining about them.
Area resorts are here ready to serve you!

PARK 2/4/2010:
Some of the best snowmobiling of the winter season is now occurring in
Voyageurs National Park and the surrounding community. All snowmobile
trails in the park will be open and in good condition this weekend. Park
crews and area snowmobile clubs have cleared brush and windfall from a
recent storm and have groomed all overland safety portages. The Chain of
Lakes Trail on the Kabetogama Peninsula is the only trail in the park that
is in fair condition with numerous riding surface moguls. The Rainy Lake
Ice Road is open from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and now circumvents
Dryweed Island on to the entrance of Dove Bay. If lake ice conditions
permit next week, an attempt will be made to extend the ice road into the
back channel area toward Diamond Island.
In order to conduct trail maintenance and moose research activity next
week, park staff will be temporarily closing the Chain of Lakes snowmobile
trail and the overland portages of the Ash River to Kettle Falls snowmobile
trail. These trails will reopen NO LATER THAN the morning of Friday,
February 12 to ensure use during the Presidents Day holiday weekend. An
additional News Release will be issued next week if trail closures are
lifted before February 12.
Please remember that the snowmobile speed limit within Voyageurs National
Park is 45 mph on frozen lake surfaces and 25 mph on all overland portages.
Speed limit signs are posted at trailheads and overland portages. Regular
weekly winter trail conditions reports will be available on our website at
