The moment it became clear was halfway up Teton Pass’s Taylor Mountain at sunrise. I was skinning in that quiet blue hour, expecting the usual ultralight-boot experience: a cramped toe box, midfoot pressure, and the slightly awkward stride I’ve learned to endure on big climbs. Instead, the TLT X moved with me. My stride felt almost too smooth for a touring boot, and my feet stayed warm.

I’ve done this climb countless times, and this was the first time I caught myself thinking more about the sky turning pink overhead than about what was on my feet. Throughout that tour, I also realized how much less time I was spending adjusting buckles or fighting with mode switches. The boot simply let me move, settle into my rhythm, and stay focused on the mountains rather than the gear.

A few days later, on a longer push into Death Canyon, the benefits became even more obvious. I covered more vert with less fatigue, and instead of the usual hot spots forming beneath my forefoot, my feet felt fresh by the time I reached the top. On long approaches, ultralight boots usually expose their compromises; the TLT X instead felt like it was quietly removing barriers, letting me spend more time actually adventuring.

In short: The Dynafit TLT X ($500) is comfortable, has a generous fit, and a smooth glide on the skin track. It climbs fast, moves naturally, and its Grilamid shell has enough backbone for plenty of backcountry laps. Transitions allow you to spend less time fussing with buckles and more time enjoying the runs. If you live for long approaches and that smooth uphill rhythm, this is as close as a ski boot gets to feeling like a hiking boot.

Dynafit TLT X Ski Touring Boot Review

Uphill Performance

The uphill performance of the TLT X is what sets it apart from every lightweight boot I’ve used in the past decade. On big days in the Tetons and long spring missions in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, it consistently felt like the easiest boot to climb in. The cuff pivots freely with almost no resistance, allowing each step to settle into a natural rhythm that smooths out steep climbs.

Compared to other lightweight boots, the difference is immediate. The Scarpa F1 LT has good mobility, but it never felt as relaxed or fluid on steep kick turns. The Tecnica Zero G Tour Pro is a fantastic boot, yet it’s much stiffer on the uphill and more restrictive during long side hills.

What I appreciate most is how seamless the walk mode felt. Transitions were fast and intuitive thanks to the single-lever system (more on that below). On fast laps on Teton Pass or while linking peaks in Colorado, that quick mode switch added noticeable efficiency.

The TLT X also performed exceptionally well while boot packing, scrambling over rocks, and climbing in crampons. The minimal resistance and friction-free motion helped the boot feel secure and agile when the terrain steepened, offering more confidence on mixed ascents than many boots in this weight class.

Downhill Performance

Dropping into Taylor Peak after a long climb, I expected the TLT X to feel soft and hesitant. But it held its own. The flex of the Grilamid shell was predictable and supportive enough for soft snow and moderate speeds.

In deep powder, it felt playful and surprisingly stable for its weight. On variable or refrozen surfaces, its limits showed up sooner than those of heavier touring boots — a known tradeoff with fast-and-light designs.

Compared directly to the Scarpa F1 LT, I felt the TLT X skied with more composure. The F1 LT felt twitchier at speed and less supportive on firm entrances, while the TLT X provided a smoother, more centered flex that let me stay balanced without constant micro-adjustments. It still fell short of heavier boots, such as the Scarpa Maestrale or Maestrale RS, in choppy or heavier snow, but that’s expected in this category.

One area where the TLT X surprised me was in chalky, midwinter conditions. I skied a few laps on Coal Creek, where the snow was firm enough to expose weaknesses in ultralight boots. The TLT X stayed predictable as long as I stayed centered, and it never buckled forward the way some ultralight boots can when they’re under pressure.

It rewarded a smooth skier and felt best when I was guiding the ski rather than muscling it. Within those limits, it felt composed and trustworthy.

Comfort, Fit, and Warmth

The fit of the TLT X won me over instantly, especially since I have wider feet. The 101 mm last was more forgiving than most lightweight touring boots I’ve tested. The toe box felt roomy without being sloppy, and the Twistfit system (a BOA-like dial) wrapped my midfoot evenly, eliminating pressure points. I also appreciated being able to fine-tune tension without taking off my gloves.

Although it feels roomy, the TLT X is technically a neutral-last boot, offering broad appeal across various foot shapes. The thin, minimalist liner still requires a precise fit — a characteristic of all ultralight touring boots.

Warmth was another surprise. On cold December mornings in the Tetons, my feet stayed warmer than I expected. But during a January deep freeze, I missed the insulation of my Maestrales; 1 kg touring boots use thin liners and lightweight shells, so warmth is always a compromise.

The TLT X is still warmer than many ultralight competitors. But it isn’t the boot I’d recommend for deep-winter objectives unless you run hot. It sits near the top of the warmth range for true ultralight designs, yet falls short of midweight touring boots built for colder conditions.

Weight

Featherweight efficiency sits at the heart of the TLT X. The boot falls firmly into the one-kilogram class, and I felt that immediately on the skin track. It’s lighter than most traditional touring boots, and that drop in weight translates to a smoother stride, less fatigue, and more efficient movement.

On long missions — linking ridgelines in the Tetons or grinding vert in the Sawatch Range — the difference became obvious within minutes. For skiers who prioritize efficiency, long tours, and big-mile days, this ski boot delivers an uphill experience few boots can match.

Ease of Use

Ease of use is one of the defining strengths of the TLT X. Its one-motion transition between ski and walk mode is among the best in the lightweight touring category, and on fast fitness laps or multi-lap mornings on Teton Pass, that quick switch gave the boot a noticeable efficiency advantage.

A single lever controls both cuff tension and the ski–walk lock. Open it, and the cuff swings freely with a wide, natural range of motion for climbing or scrambling. Close it, and the cuff anchors to the lower shell in one smooth movement, creating a stable descending platform without the usual fiddling.

Because the mechanism is fully enclosed, it avoids the exposed interfaces that can ice up on boots like the Scarpa Maestrale, making transitions more reliable in cold or stormy conditions.

The Twistfit system deserves credit here, too. It tightened evenly across the midfoot with a quick turn, even while I was wearing gloves, and made micro-adjustments incredibly easy on the fly. For day-to-day touring, that simplicity added to the boot’s overall efficiency.

One limitation worth noting is that cable-and-dial systems like Twistfit are harder to field-repair than traditional buckles. I haven’t had failures, but it’s something to consider for remote objectives where improvising a fix becomes more difficult.

Room for Improvement

The TLT X has its limits. Downhill performance is the biggest one. For its weight, it skis well, but it cannot match the power or stability of heavier touring boots. On firm snow, bigger bowls, or wider skis, its limits become clear, but in soft snow on lighter setups, I found my groove.

Warmth is another tradeoff. It’s warmer than some competitors, but ultimately it’s still a 1kg boot with a thin liner. On frigid midwinter days, my feet got cold faster than in midweight boots with Intuition liners.

Who It’s For

The TLT X is ideal for skiers who value uphill speed, all-day comfort, and natural movement. It shines on long spring missions, fitness laps, multi-peak linkups in the Tetons, and Colorado fourteeners.

Newer backcountry skiers will appreciate its forgiving fit and intuitive closure, but may want something stiffer for big descents. Experienced tourers will love the smooth stride, efficiency, and how the boot disappears beneath them on the climb.

For skiers who prioritize transitions, long approaches, and precise footwork on mixed terrain, these touring boots offer one of the most streamlined and efficient experiences in the ultralight category. A roomy and tough carry-on bag is the only surefire way to prevent an airline from losing your luggage and sending your trip into a tailspin. As one of those weirdos like me who refuse to travel with checked luggage, I was intrigued by Victorinox’s Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business ($543).

Like the multitools that Victorinox is known for, there’s more to the Mythic Frequent Flyer than meets the eye. Many carry-on bags are either hardshell or fabric, but the Frequent Flyer is a hybrid of the two. Plus, the eight wheels and internal organization showed a lot of promise. So I trusted it with my gear for a slew of week-long trips. I haven’t found any tweezers stashed away anywhere (OH MY GOD IT ACTUALLY HAS TWEEZERS), but I’m still looking.

In short: The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is a high-end carry-on roller bag. It’s a fabric and hardshell hybrid that’s tough, roomier than it looks, and rolls very well. Aside from a few dings, the bag is very tough, and its interior organization is perfect for the Type A traveler.

Brand Background

Founded in 1884, Swiss company Victorinox is known for creating the original Swiss Army Knife. While most famous for its multitools, the company has expanded its offerings into other areas, including cutlery, watches, travel gear, and even fragrances. The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is part of the company’s newest line of luggage, the Mythic collection. 

How I Tested the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On

I used the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business on half a dozen trips, including both road trips and air travel, over a period of about 4 months. These trips ranged from 2 days to over a week long, and I made it a point to use this bag exclusively, along with a backpack. I tested the pack for durability, ease of use, and utility during these trips.

Key Features

The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On is primarily made of durable, recycled hardshell plastic. The front panel, however, has an aesthetically pleasing fabric with several organizational pockets. This hybrid design combines the protection of a hardshell carry-on with the additional pockets and softer look of fabric. 

There are four double-wheel castors that ensure smooth rolling, and the telescopic handle deploys smoothly and is very sturdy. And (it took me a while to find these), there are some nods to Victorinox’s Swiss Army Knife origins — a tiny pen is hidden under the handle, and a pair of tweezers is stashed inside the logo on the back.

The Good 

When you’re deciding on a carry-on roller bag, you usually have to decide between a super-protective hardshell design and a more pocket-friendly fabric design. The Mythic Frequent Flyer offers the best of both worlds with a protective hardshell over the bottom and most of the top, and a fabric front with extra pockets and organization. 

I refuse to check bags, so I’m very picky about the carry-ons that I travel with. I love hardshells because I can sit on them to cram more gear in, but I hate having to open the bag and cram it shut if I need to get any small items out of it. The front pockets on the Mythic Carry-On are an excellent solution.

The front pocket has foam-padded slots, including one that fits a 14” laptop and one that fits an 11” tablet. The tablet pocket is lined with a soft material to protect the tablet screen as well. There are also two open pockets to store cords or a charger, as well as a zip pocket for passports and other essentials. I travel with a Kindle Fire tablet (don’t judge me), so I loved the ability to just open it up and grab it anytime I had a chance to stop and read. 

Inside are two main compartments. One side of the carry-on is open with a locking strap to compress its contents, and the other zips shut. This came in handy when I traveled home from a hiking trip with muddy boots — I stowed them in there to keep them separated from the rest of my gear. The zippered compartment also has two more pockets and a handy little pocket for stashing an AirTag or any other tracker that you use.  

The compression and organization worked like a charm on every trip. I was able to pack a week’s worth of clothes and gear on a recent trip to Texas and still had room to cram in a few books I picked up on the trip. 

In the airport, the wheels glided smoothly, and I never felt like the bag was going to tip over. The telescoping handle is sturdy, and the deployment is very smooth. I never had to furiously shake it to make it work, unlike with other bags. 

It’s worth mentioning that it’s just a great-looking bag. The fabric front with the Victorinox emblem just looks classy. Plus, Victorinox added a few fun little inside jokes. There’s a hidden ID pad just underneath the handle, and right next to it is a little pen, just like the ones you’ll find in the company’s Swiss Army Knives.

But the real kicker is the tiny set of tweezers set into the logo on the back of the bag. It’s a little detail, and I may never use it, but it’s an excellent nod to the company’s origins. 

The Bad

There’s a lot to love about the Mythic Carry On, but I did have one big mishap. On the first trip I took with it, a flight to Tennessee, one of the zipper tabs on the front panel broke off. It has two zippers, so I can still use the bag, but it’s a bit inconvenient. 

I have no idea what happened — I’m guessing that the tab got caught on something when I was stowing it in the plane’s overhead compartment. It might have been a one-off accident, but for a bag that costs north of $500, I expected more. 

Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On: Final Thoughts

The broken zipper tab is a concern, and the bag does accumulate some scuffs and scars over time, but this carry-on roller has been a solid traveling companion. For everything from weekend getaways to week-long treks, it has fit all my gear with room for more. 

The organization is excellent without creating a cluttered interior, and it allows easy access to your electronics and other necessities. Plus, the fun design add-ons like little multitool features are a reminder of where the company started (you’ll never know when you need tweezers). If you’re looking for a bag that looks good, keeps your gear safe, and rolls like a dream, the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is a solid choice.

As I shivered in the predawn darkness, the need for a caffeine hit was overwhelming. I was groggy and tired from back-to-back days of whitetail hunting, and prime time was fast approaching. My head wasn’t in the game, and it needed to be.

Twenty feet in the air, I shifted in my tree saddle and started digging through my pack, searching for the energy drink I foolishly placed at the bottom on the night prior. I pulled all sorts of junk from the pack, using one arm to keep everything from falling out of the tree while the other frantically searched the clutter in the bottom of my bag. The magic juice was nowhere to be found.

In my easily frustrated state, I caved and decided to use the Coast FL97R headlamp, despite the haunting suspicion that a shooter buck was only 100 yards away in the darkness. “Coast, Red,” I whispered, arms laden with extra layers and gear. A subtle, red light glistened off the top of the can, buried beneath two trail cameras. Thank God, sweet relief.

“Coast, off,” I whispered, enveloping myself back into darkness. I stuffed everything back in the pack, and then sat back and woke up with the woods, enjoying my drink on high alert.

In short: Voice activation is a relatively new technology in headlamps. The Coast FL97R ($60) is the most budget-friendly headlamp in the brand’s lineup that you can talk to. After over a month of use, I’ve found it to be useful in way more situations than I expected. Throw in the ability to spit out 1,250 lumens, four different lights, and an intuitive user interface, and you have a stellar torch for under 70 bucks. It’s impressive, and the price is only reflected in the battery life.

Voice Activation in a Budget-Friendly Torch

If you’re not familiar with voice activation from Coast, think of it like Siri. You give the headlamp instructions by saying, “Coast, *insert command*.” The brand launched the RL35R flagship headlamp in 2024. Now the lineup is expanding to include the FL97R reviewed here.

There are nine different commands the light knows. Before using it, press the small button at the bottom of the headlamp to activate it. The voice activation will stay on, but automatically turns off after the light is powered off and has been inactive for 15 minutes.

I thought it was a cool concept when I first looked at it, but I wasn’t sure how much I’d use it. In fact, when my mom was in town visiting, I showed it to her, and she mocked me. “That’s ridiculous. What’s wrong with your two hands?” OK, Boomer.

After using it, I can say that it is way handier than I anticipated. And really, when you think about it, that should be obvious. I’m opting for a headlamp rather than a flashlight so I can keep my hands free. It makes sense to have a completely hands-free operation.

When I’m hunting, I operate in complete darkness as much as I can. However, some tasks need light, and I’ve occasionally run into hiccups while placing climbing sticks on a tree halfway up in the dark. While keeping my lineman’s belt tight, holding a stick steady, and trying to run a rope around a trunk, I don’t have free hands. It’s so nice to say, “Coast, red” to get the little bit of light I need.

It’s useful when doing boat repairs with tool-laden hands, while cooking in hunting camps, and really, everywhere.

Does It Work Well?

The voice activation is pretty much glitch-free. I’ve had a bunch of people test it, including children, and some southern rednecks with thick accents. It works for all of us.

Since I’m a hunter, I’ve also tested how quietly I can speak to it. It will pick up whispers — although not perfectly. I usually have to whisper the command a few times, but it does eventually get it.

The nine commands are excessive because I can’t remember them all between uses. I use “Coast, Red,” “Coast, On,” and “Coast, Off” the most, which gives me red light and the standard LED light set at medium. I occasionally use “Coast, Warm” for a less blinding, more camp-friendly light.

The Coast FL97R: Four Different Lights in One

There are four different lighting modes on this headlamp. For 60 bucks, you get a red and green light to preserve night vision, a “warm” light on the outer edges of the lamp, and a four-setting LED light capable of cranking out 1250 lumens on turbo, which is a very high output for a lamp at this price point.

You have options, and I regularly use all the lights except the green. The warm light is one of my favorites. It’s perfect for working around camp, and it provides a working glow that envelopes you, rather than a bright beam that blinds everyone you look at.

While the 1,250 lumens on turbo is impressive, it is a bit much for most uses outside of sending a glaring beam into the woods to check for the Sasquatch you’re certain is coming to eat you. Outside of its excessive brightness, it’ll also drain the battery at a much faster rate than the lower levels.

I usually use the LED light set to medium, which emits a sufficient 420 lumens and keeps the battery alive for 5 hours of runtime. If that’s not enough runtime for you, you can preserve battery by switching to low (110 lumens), which boosts the runtime to 15 hours.

Easy-to-Use Interface

The button layout and interface of the Coast FL97R are among the most intuitive I’ve ever used. I am the king of forgetting button sequences. Press and hold for one light, three clicks for another, hold to dim, etc., doesn’t work for me. I end up turning the woods into a disco just trying to get a red light on, which isn’t exactly ideal for hunting.

This headlamp packs quite a few features, but fortunately, everything has its own button, eliminating all confusion. The middle button controls the main LED; the left button controls the colored lights; and the right button controls the warm light. You press the associated button multiple times to toggle through brightness. It’s simple and impossible to forget.

Changing from a floodlight to a spot beam is equally as simple. You just turn the “GLIDE FOCUS” lever on the light itself to adjust the constriction of light.

The FL97R can reach 4 m with the dial set wide open and the light set to low, and up to 225 m with the dial zoomed in and the light set to turbo. It has the perfect reach for most, if not all, situations where you need a light, and adjusting it is very straightforward.

Where the Coast FL97R Headlamp Could Improve

For the first 2 weeks that I used this headlamp, I despised it. The battery was dying on me at an unreal rate. On three separate hunts, I was rolling in the dark.

Warning: User Error Is a Thing

That problem came down to me, well, being an idiot.

I will admit I work too quickly in the woods. Small details go by the wayside, and I’m often hurrying to move on to the next task or objective. An example of a small detail I often forget is utilizing a headlamp’s lockout function, which the FL97R has.

Now, for my entire life, not using a lockout function has only bitten me in the butt a handful of times. With this headlamp, it seemed to happen dang near every time.

That easy-to-use, multi-button interface proved to be the culprit. The buttons on the top of the headlamp aren’t recessed. They stick out, and that design all but guarantees the FL97R will get turned on in a backpack or pocket. I started stuffing it in and out of a pack without using the lockout, and lo and behold, it was almost impossible to keep it turned off.

So, I did something truly groundbreaking: I started using the lockout function Coast provides. Voilà. Problem solved. Ultimately, my issue didn’t stem from the product. It was my fault. I’m providing a warning, though: use your brain and use the lockout function, or you will have a dead headlamp.

The Battery Life Is Still Less Than Impressive, Though

Even though I solved my problem, it is worth noting that the burn time is, in fact, worse than that of other, more expensive headlamps. However, it’s not so poor that you can’t rely on it in the field. But you may have to recharge it more than you’d think. I’ve started recharging after every three uses, depending on how heavy that use is.

I’ve also started packing spare AAA batteries, which the headlamp also takes, a detail I appreciate on a rechargeable headlamp with a shorter-than-average battery life. Since the lockout debacle, I haven’t had to break into them in the field, though. However, if you’re headed on an extended trip without the ability to recharge, the AAAs make this headlamp a serviceable choice.

Final Thoughts on the Coast FL97R

I have dropped what many would consider an irresponsible amount of money on a headlamp before. At that stage in my life, I was spending excessive time outdoors, and a good headlamp was indispensable. I needed ridiculous run times and massive amounts of power.

There is a problem with those headlamps, though: they tend to be very bulky, with the light at the front, a giant battery pack at the back, and wires everywhere. Yes, they’re awesome, but they’re incredibly uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

The real beauty of the Coast FL97R is that it’s highly feature-rich and kicks out a ton of light in a compact, easy-to-use package. And the asking price is more than fair, all things considered.

The headband is comfortable, and the lamp isn’t so heavy that it feels like it’s sagging on your noggin. Yes, the battery life could be better, but if you wanted an improvement in that department, you’d have to go to one of those clunky, obnoxious designs. It’s a tradeoff, and one I’m willing to make for a sleek design.

Is this the headlamp I would select if I were consistently going on multiweek expeditions? No. But for most people who need a headlamp for short camping trips, hunting, or general use, this is an excellent choice. You’ll probably be surprised at how much you use the voice control. I, for one, don’t want a headlamp without it.

There’s this one distinct section of my favorite touring zone that confounds most layering strategies. It’s about an hour into the tour and nearly 2,000 vertical feet into the climbing when the forest yields to an icy wind-battered ridgeline that bends up even steeper. Norrøna finally gave the backcountry skiing softshell diehards what they’ve been requesting for years: a more breathable version of their iconic Lofoten outerwear. But like most softshells, there were a few instances where the kit just wasn’t the right tool for the job.

The softshell fabric substantially boosts breathability for the skin track and the long days under the sun, in the resort or out. Norrona Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants Review

Norrona’s Lofoten line has been a staple for the brand for over 20 years. But if there’s one thing the brand is known for, it’s wet weather protection. Its Norwegian homeland is one of the wettest places on Earth.

GORE-TEX is great for when you need bombproof weather protection. Water and wind don’t get past it, and it’s just breathable enough to resist getting clammy on the inside.

Still, though, it routinely feels like overkill on sunny days in Colorado’s backcountry. It’s easy to get hot fast when you’re hammering up the skin track. It was a pleasant surprise (and somewhat of a bombshell) when Norrøna announced a softshell version of its iconic Lofoten outerwear: the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Lofoten Flex1 Pants.

Lofoten Flex1 Jacket Details & Fit

The highlight of the Lofoten Flex1 jacket is the fit. True to the Lofoten reputation, the Jacket is decidedly long and relatively slim-fitting. It has a freeride shape without being outrageously stylish. It’s refreshingly modern and simultaneously timeless.

The bottom hem drops to my upper thighs. The sleeves are extra long and have articulated elbows, so they don’t creep up my wrist when I reach for a long pole plant or raise my hand above my head. It adds protection to the jacket’s boundaries, which was most welcome on gusty ridgelines.

At 6’1”, the large jacket fit about perfectly for skiing. It was slim enough to wear with just a sun hoodie underneath, but I had enough room to layer medium and heavy-duty midlayers underneath.

Most importantly for ski touring, the exterior profile was relatively slim. It accommodated over-the-shell insulation, such as Patagonia’s Das Light Hoody. In my opinion, good ski touring outerwear must seamlessly accommodate both.

The Lofoten Flex1’s details are simple in the best possible way. The jacket offers just two external chest pockets and one shoulder pocket for a ski pass. A well-designed helmet-compatible hood and big underarm vent zippers round it out.

Lofoten Flex1 Pants Details & Fit

The Lofoten Flex1 Pants follow the Jacket’s minimalist lead, offering first and foremost an outstanding fit and shape. Loose fitting but not baggy, while still being somewhat slim. They have an aesthetic freeride shape that would complement most skiers’ styles.

The size large was, in fact, a tiny bit big on my 33-inch waist. Velcro fasteners were up to the task of providing some level of pants security, even if I wouldn’t trust them to keep my pants up alone.

Thankfully, Norrona opted for a belt-and-suspenders approach — beefy belt loops accommodate my favorite webbing belt, and a zipper attachment for a sold-separately zip-in bib ($69) transforms the pants into much more protective soft-shell bib snowpants. The bibs simply zip into the teeth around the circumference of the pants’ waist.

With the bib deployed, I was able to forgo a belt and rely on the Velcro waist-tightening tabs on each hip. It kept the pants’ mobility excellent and kept the pants’ joints from migrating up and down during ski touring strides. The bib’s upper provides a tight seal to the body. Not a snowflake was able to creep in during the test period, even while flopping around in the powder.

Pants Pockets & Cuffs

The pockets are similarly streamlined. These ski pants offer two big zippered thigh pockets (plenty big for a phone) and one zippered hip pocket that can accommodate an avalanche beacon.

The pants’ cuffs default to a ski boot-accommodating flare that can be buttoned in for a slightly slimmer fit. It’s a distinction that lands it more in the freeride side of the pants spectrum. Those searching for more of a mountaineering pant that won’t snag on crampons should look elsewhere for pant cuffs that default to narrow but zip open to accommodate ski boots. Norrona’s own Lyngen Flex1 Light pants are a great example.

The pant cuffs deviate from the softshell theme with hardshell reinforced ankles. The design both defends against ski edge slices and upward creeping wetness from the snow. They’re burly enough that they’re still in great shape after the test period despite a repeated thrashing from my skis’ edges and a painfully complicated early-season bushwhack.

Breathability

As I trudged uphill fully covered in the Lofoten softshell kit, I wasn’t disappointed. And that’s saying something because I’m an exceptionally warm person. Usually, I have no problem sweating through layers. And believe me, I found the limit of the Lofoten’s breathability. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by how long it took to overheat. The fabric breathes well.

Once I started to get warm, I zipped open the generous underarm vents and the long mesh-backed thigh vents to extend the range. But the fabric is still burly. It doesn’t breathe anything like a sun hoody, microgrid fleece, or ultralight windbreaker.

That said, the Flex1 fabric felt distinctly more breathable than your typical three-layer hardshell fabric on the uphills. The hot, wet air close to my body was able to escape instead of turning my pits, back, and legs into a swamp. It kept me feeling dry, day after day, whether I was ski touring or resort skiing. That’s not typically the case when I’m clad head to toe in even the most breathable hardshell fabrics.

Flex1 Fabric Waterproofing

Norrøna’s proprietary Flex1 softshell fabric is a blend of polyester, nylon, and elastane. It aims to strike a balance between breathability, protection, and stretch. The fabric’s DWR-treated exterior is burly to the touch. The interior is brushed, so it feels slightly softer against the skin.

The flip side of breathability is protection. I quickly noticed on a chilly, early-season resort day that icy cold air can penetrate the soft-shell fabric. As that chilly wind deteriorated into a full-blown snowstorm, I weathered the blizzard draped in the Lofoten Flex1 kit. It did a fantastic job at deflecting cold, dry snow.

But as the snowflakes thickened, plump with liquid, the Flex1 fabric proved penetrable. It’s not waterproof like GORE-TEX. My thighs and chest got damp after a while while riding the chairlift.

That’s not particularly surprising. The protection versus breathability conundrum is one that all product designers face when using a softshell fabric. The Lofoten’s Flex1 fabric falls on the protective side of the softshell spectrum, even if it can eventually succumb to saturation.

But Norrøna’s designers got ahead of it. Both the pants and jacket feature waterproof panels in the knees, seat, and shoulders. Those zones stayed mostly dry. But more importantly, I was able to poke around in snow pits, kneel, and sit on my skis for a snack without soaking my outerwear.

One of the most overlooked benefits of softshells for skiing is stretch. The Flex1 fabric is very stretchy, which vastly improves the kit’s mobility compared to its hardshell competitors. I enjoyed the stretch most acutely on the skin track, where tiny constrictions can add up after thousands of strides.

Thankfully, the Lofoten Flex1 Pants not only articulated well but also stretched at the extremes of each stride, rather than constricting the movement. 

Resort vs. Backcountry: Where Does It Thrive?

I was impressed with the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants’ versatility in the front country and backcountry after weeks of testing. In all honesty, I had originally pegged the softshell kit as a backcountry specialist that wouldn’t venture with me inbounds very often.

But other than protection in serious wet blizzard conditions, the Flex1 kit actually made a lot of sense for inbounds skiing in most conditions. For one, the softshell material is distinctly thicker, and therefore slightly more insulating, than a thin hardshell. I swapped between light wool baselayers and none at all.

As mentioned, it’s also stretchy. That mobility makes a big difference for dynamic skiers who lean deeply into turns and ski fast and loose in moguls. The cut lends itself to basically any layering architecture that the temperatures could demand. The optional bib adds a layer of protection on par with my go-to resort bibs. It’s basically impossible for snow to get in my pants when that thing is zipped in.

The Lofoten Flex1 kit simultaneously has the breathability and mobility that I’m looking for in the backcountry. So sidecountry and hike-to resort terrain, logically, is covered too. It’s an outerwear kit that has more bases covered than you might expect from softshell.

Room for Improvement: Powder Skirt

Unlike many ski jackets (including the Lofoten GORE-TEX Jacket), this ski jacket includes a fixed “Snap-away” powder skirt. It snaps to the matching pants’ belt loops to create an ultra-protective barrier from the light and fluffy. It works as advertised.

But I’m decidedly anti-powder skirt. For one, they’re annoying at baseline, and I find that they ride higher than I’d want them. Also, they’re superfluous when you’re wearing bibs like the Flex1 Pants’ zip-in bib. And staying warm in the backcountry is inevitably about the layer shuffle. You’re constantly adjusting layers to achieve the ideal temperature balance. Buttoning and unbuttoning the powder skirt is cumbersome.

That’s a long way of saying that I wish the powder skirt were removable like with most other jackets. But it’s far from a dealbreaker. I simply cut it out with a pair of scissors and never looked back.

Norrona Lofoten Flex1 Jacket & Pants: Conclusion

Norrøna’s gift to the softshell connoisseurs, the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants, were exceptionally capable in the mixed weather and skiing conditions that I encountered during the test period.

But here’s the thing: The softshell material isn’t all that different from other top midweight softshells on the market. That’s not a bad thing. It has a super-durable exterior that fends off dry snow and very light precipitation. A brushed interior is soft against the skin and adds just a tiny bit of warmth compared to a hardshell. Most importantly, it’s adequately breathable without absolutely surrendering to frigid wind gusts.

What sticks out about the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants is the attention to fit and mobility. I loved the long, slim cut, the attention to movement-oriented gusseting, and the protective features sprinkled throughout. The attachable bib was a huge bonus. The pockets and details were dialed for ski touring.

The Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants are a stellar companion on all but the wettest days in-bounds or outside the resort gates with the right layering strategy. Skiers that don’t venture into the backcountry, and therefore don’t need the extra breathability, would enjoy slightly more protection from the GORE-TEX version of the Lofoten or my personal favorite resort-oriented hardshell, the Tamok.

Still, backcountry skiers or those hiking to extreme terrain or sidecountry gates looking specifically for a freeride-oriented softshell kit could hardly do better than the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants. The people asked, and Norrøna delivered.

Some boots make an impression for a season or two. The Scarpa Maestrale ($799) and Maestrale RS ($899) have stayed with me for more than a decade. I first skied a version of the Maestrale in 2010, and it has been a constant in my backcountry kit ever since. It has carried me through early-season firm snow in the Tetons, thigh-deep laps in Utah, hut trips in Colorado, and cold ridge walks on fourteeners.

I added the Maestrale RS to my rotation about 5 years ago and was immediately struck by its warmth, power, and more assertive downhill performance.

Each generation of these two boots improved on the last (see our 2017 review), but the most recent redesign — which quietly rolled out in fall 2023 — represents the most significant update in these boots’ history. Scarpa reshaped the shells, updated the liners, continued using bio-based plastics, and refined everything from the ski-walk mechanism to the buckle layout.

While the updated Maestrale and Maestrale RS share the same overall shape, fit, and touring platform, the key difference between them comes down to stiffness and power delivery. The standard Maestrale utilizes Scarpa’s new Carbon Core technology in the lower shell, adding backbone and improved power transmission. It also maintains a more forgiving flex.

The Maestrale RS builds on that foundation. It uses a firmer shell material and a co-molded carbon frame in both the lower shell and the cuff. That increases torsional rigidity and edge control without creating a harsh, on-off flex.

The result is two boots that share a common backbone but are tuned for different styles of backcountry skiing.

After months of side-by-side testing, one thing is clear. The Maestrale family remains one of the most balanced and dependable touring boot lineups available today. Few boots balance the climb up and the ski down like these two legends.

In short: The Scarpa Maestrale ($799) and Maestrale RS ($899) prove that classics don’t fade — they get better. They glide efficiently on the skin track, stay warm when winter bites, and feel composed when you drop into real terrain. The Maestrale is the forgiving, all-day workhorse built for long tours and everyday backcountry skiing, while the Maestrale RS adds noticeable stiffness and torsional power for wider skis, steeper lines, and skiers who like to push harder on the descent.

Scarpa Maestrale & Maestrale RS Review

A Proven Platform, Fully Reworked

I’ve skied every Maestrale since its original 2010 release. This latest version is the biggest leap forward yet. The new shells utilize bio-based plastics, which reduce weight and provide both boots with a smoother, more refined feel. Scarpa reshaped the shell to follow the contours of the foot more naturally and upgraded the buckles and tongue for cleaner closure and better support.

Both boots now benefit from Scarpa’s Carbon Core technology in the lower shell. That upgrade improves power transmission and stability without sacrificing touring comfort. The Maestrale RS takes that one step further with added carbon reinforcement in the cuff. That gives it a noticeably stiffer, more precise feel on the descent.

Fit is where most skiers will first notice the changes. Both the Maestrale and the RS use a refined 102mm last with a roomier toe box and improved instep shape that eliminates several old pressure points.

Another key aspect of the Maestrale’s fit is its slightly lower-volume shape from top to bottom, paired with a more precise, subtly narrower heel pocket. Combined with the slightly wider forefoot last, it delivers a secure hold without feeling cramped on long tours. While they share the same last, the RS fills more interior volume with a denser liner for a firmer, more precise fit.

Uphill Performance

Both versions tour better than their predecessors. The updated cuff pivots more freely, and the refined tongue helps the boot roll smoothly through each stride. The walk mechanism breaks in quickly and becomes exceptionally smooth after a few days.

The Maestrale moves the most naturally on the skin track. Its stride feels relaxed and efficient, and on big vert days in the Tetons, it was the version I reached for most often. The RS climbs well too, though its denser liner and firmer cuff make it feel slightly more structured with a touch less freedom at the top of each step.

Range-of-Motion Comparison

Both boots offer a better range of motion than heavier freeride-touring models in the 1,500-2,000g range, which makes long approaches noticeably smoother. You’ll still feel a difference between the RS and the most uphill-oriented boots in the sub-1,300g category. Lighter options such as the Dynafit TLT X, Atomic Backland, or Scarpa F1 LT have a more open stride on long, low-angle climbs.

Ski–Walk Mechanism

The latest ski–walk mechanism is one of the most meaningful upgrades in this redesign. The lever engages cleanly, resists icing better than past versions, and feels more robust when switched into ski mode. The large pull tab is easy to grab with gloves, and even on storm days, I never struggled to switch modes.

It’s a simple system, but a clear improvement for both versions of the boot. You still need to clear out ice and snow, or it may not click in on the first try. However, I still found this to be less of an issue than in previous iterations.

Downhill Performance

This is where the two boots separate more clearly. The standard Maestrale’s 110 flex is stronger than expected. The updated cuff and tongue provide a smooth shin feel and consistent support, making it a great match for mid-to-fat touring skis. I’ve skied multiple iterations of the Maestrales in real terrain from Mount Elbert’s Box Creek Couloirs and the Teton’s Turkey Shoots, and never felt underpowered.

In fact, I always felt composed and in control, but I’m also an experienced skier who has spent the past 15 years skiing largely in backcountry boots, even at the resort. Thus, I’m accustomed to navigating intimidating terrain in lighter boots that flex way more than typical resort boots.

The Maestrale RS, which has a 125 flex, adds a noticeable step up in authority. The added stiffness from the reinforced cuff translates to improved edge hold and stability at speed, especially in firm or variable snow conditions. When driving wider skis or skiing steep, exposed terrain, the RS felt more planted and more confidence-inspiring.

If you spend a lot of time at the resort, stiffer hybrid touring boots are available. But given how well the Maestrale and RS both climb, their downhill strength is impressive. You sacrifice far less power than expected, and in backcountry snow, including wind buff, breakable crust, and soft pockets, both boots feel much closer to heavier freeride options than their weight suggests.

Comfort, Fit, and Warmth

This redesign delivers a noticeably better fit. Both boots share the same 102mm last (1 mm wider than the previous version) with a more open toe box and improved instep shape. The Maestrale RS sits on the higher-volume end of the touring spectrum, particularly across the midfoot and instep.

Skiers with wide or tall feet may find an excellent match with minimal shell work. The standard Maestrale has a slightly softer upper cuff and feels more forgiving on long climbs.

Both run warm. The Intuition liners trap heat exceptionally well, and the more open toe box improves circulation. During long pauses in subzero temperatures, both models kept my feet comfortable. The RS is the warmest of the two due to the denser liner.

Weight

The Maestrale and Maestrale RS land in a practical middle zone for touring boots. The size 27 Maestrale RS weighs 1,470 g per boot (3 pounds, 3.8 ounces), and the standard Maestrale comes in at 1,400 g per boot (3 pounds, 1.4 ounces). That small difference was noticeable to me on long climbs.

Both sit lighter than hybrid boots, such as the Scarpa 4-Quattro XT or Dynafit Tigard, but heavier than uphill-focused options like the Dynafit TLT X or Scarpa F1 LT. That positioning is intentional. The Maestrale favors all-day comfort and smooth efficiency. The RS adds weight where it matters for stability and power.

Neither boot is trying to be the lightest on the market, and that’s why they work so well. They strike a balance between uphill ease and downhill confidence that many boots in this category struggle to hit.

Room for Improvement

The walk mechanism is reliable, but in deep winter conditions, it occasionally requires a tap of the pole or a quick scrape to fully engage. The previous iteration had far more issues with icing and incomplete engagement. While these updated versions are noticeably better, it can still happen on cold, high-moisture days. It’s not a consistent problem, but worth keeping an eye on during storms or when rime starts to build.

Range of motion is better than previous generations, but still not as open or friction-free as the lightest touring boots. On long, low-angle climbs, I occasionally wanted a touch more freedom.

REI Co-op Siesta Hooded 20 Sleeping Bag: Review

First Impressions

At first glance, the Siesta Hooded Sleeping Bag looks more like a quilt than a traditional sleeping bag, thanks to its rectangular cut and roomy build. The oversized, cushioned hood is immediately noticeable, designed both for burrowing in on chilly nights and for holding a pillow from home.

The polyester shell and liner feel silky soft against the skin, a welcome departure from the plasticky texture common in other budget-friendly synthetics. After a long day on the trail, slipping into this bag feels genuinely inviting.

Its size is apparent right away — this is not a compact, ultralight design. The synthetic fill makes it bulkier than down alternatives, and it comes with a generous stuff sack that measures 11 by 16 inches. When stuffed, the stuff sack is closer to 19 by 13 inches.

Currently, the Siesta is available in a muted green colorway, though my test bag was the 2024 version featuring a brown exterior and liner.

Field Testing in the Western Slope of Colorado 

To put the Siesta through its paces, I spent several nights camping in Colorado’s alpine desert. From climbing into my rooftop tent to classic cot camping, the bag joined me on a range of front-country outings.

As mentioned earlier, the Siesta feels gentle against the skin and genuinely pleasant to crawl into at night. Its large, fluffy baffles create a quilt-like, cloud-soft feel that’s plush and cozy without being overly heavy or smothering. The silk-like polyester shell also proved practical in the field. Dirt brushed off easily, and unlike many synthetics, it didn’t seem to attract lint or pet hair. This was a notable perk when sharing camp with my two giant husky mixes.

Testing spanned late summer into early fall, with humid, rainy days giving way to crisp evenings in the low 40s and upper 30s. The humidity definitely added an extra chilly bite to the air, something I noticed while sleeping in this bag and its warming abilities.

Insulation & Warmth

The Siesta uses a polyester fill rather than natural duck or goose down. This Bluesign-approved synthetic insulation is an environmentally friendly option for those who prefer to avoid animal byproducts, though it doesn’t match down for packability or weight. On the plus side, it dries faster than feather-based fills and contributes to the bag’s more budget-friendly price.

I found the insulation generous, with large baffles that provide excellent coverage once zipped up. That said, the bag’s roomy design meant my petite frame felt a bit chilly when temperatures dropped to around 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Because the Siesta lacks the tapered shape of a traditional mummy bag, it’s less efficient at trapping heat in colder conditions. Even wearing fleece pants and a fleece jacket, I occasionally wished for a little extra warmth.

In warmer conditions, between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the Siesta performed beautifully, keeping me snug and comfortable. I found myself reaching for it most often in mid-summer rather than during the chillier early fall nights.

Additional Elements

Where many sleeping bags skimp on extras, the Siesta delivers. It includes an internal pocket for stashing small essentials like a headlamp, lip balm, or earplugs.

Thanks to its full-length zippers on either side, the Siesta can be opened completely and used as a large blanket or a comfortable sitting area at camp. I especially enjoyed this feature during afternoons when I wanted to soak up the sun without lying directly on the rocky ground.

The bag is also available in four inclusive size options: Medium, Medium-Wide, Long, and Long-Wide. I tested the Medium, which accommodates sleepers up to 72 inches (5’10”). At 5’3”, I had plenty of room to stretch out comfortably.

The sizing inclusivity is excellent for taller or plus-size sleepers, but a smaller version aimed at petite users or kids would be a welcome addition. While I appreciated the bag’s generous roominess, the lack of a more fitted design meant it didn’t hug my frame, which slightly limited its ability to retain warmth in cooler conditions.

I am part of a generation when kids carried pocket knives, slingshots, and shot BB guns on the regular. I am not saying there aren’t small pockets where this is still the case, but most kids nowadays just carry around a glowing screen for their entertainment.

Design & Features         

With an overall length of 5.4 inches and sporting a 2.13-inch 8CR14MoV, the Lander 5 is rightly sized for smaller hands, easy pocket carry, and fifth pocket carry. However, folks with larger hands will also enjoy the knife, as it excels in both grunt work and precision tasks.

For the handle scales, which also act as the frame and foundation for the knife, Knafs went with stainless 2Cr13 steel. Along with knives, this steel is commonly used for surgical tools, mechanical bearings, and valves.

On the blade, 8CR14Mov is a well-balanced, affordable knife steel. Where it has decent edge retention, it’s also notably easy to resharpen. It has a lower abrasion resistance rating, but it’s tougher than other steels in its category. Overall, it’s a versatile steel that requires a little maintenance from time to time, but won’t fail you.

Rounding out the features of the Lander 5 is an easy-to-access and operate frame lock and ample thumb opening. There’s also a deep carry pocket clip. Available colors include standard (gray) stonewash and black stonewash.

First Impressions

Given my pedigree, I actually liked the intent behind the knife before I actually liked the knife itself. Knowing that this knife was designed for affordability and accessibility for a younger audience appealed to me. I grew up carrying a knife as a kid, so a brand bringing that back into focus is important to me.

I appreciate that Knafs kept the price down by going with affordable materials, and still managed to ensure their reliability. The stainless steel handle scales make for a nice option that falls between aluminum and titanium in overall quality. It adds a reassuring heft, but stays under 3 ounces.

I also like the choice of using 8CR14MoV steel for this drop-point blade. This steel provides an opportunity to educate younger users on how to sharpen a blade. That’s a life skill that can only be learned through doing.

Another feature that stood out was the ample jimping on the spine of the blade. This not only increases your control of the blade, but also allows the user to apply a little extra force without over-exerting themselves.

Some people see a smaller knife and think they’ll have to do more work to get the same results as a larger knife. That might be true for chopping down a tree, but for food and kindling prep (or breaking down Amazon boxes), the Lander 5 punches well above its weight class.

In the Field

When the knife arrived, I promptly dropped it right into my fifth pocket, where it fit perfectly. I then spent my first few hours with the Lander 5 cutting open and breaking down boxes, tearing through twist ties, and performing various other holiday tasks.

In the weeks following, it prepped tinder, sliced peppers, and, when stabbed in a tree, even served as a phone stand to help record a video for my daughters. The Lander 5 works as a multitask EDC knife. It won’t replace a belt knife or even a larger EDC, but it comes in handy plenty often.

Perfect Scout Knife

With an overall length (OAL) of 5.4 inches, the Lander 5 is the perfect size for kids between 8 and 12 years old. Not only is it a great fit for little hands, but that age is the sweet spot for learning safety, awareness, and proper handling and use.

In fact, I’ll wrap two more Lander 5s and stuff them into Christmas stockings for my daughters, who happen to be 9 and 12.

In winter, I like to keep a smaller knife on me for harvesting tinder fungus and collecting kindling. Having my two little helpers carry the right tool for the job will be the first step to learning some basic bushcraft.

Lander 5 Summary

I am by no means a Luddite or against technology, but I think for kids growing up in suburban environs, knives are important. They’re a key to outdoor life. A knife like the Lander 5 could help kids — and their parents — connect a little more with the outdoors and manual tasks. Even for adults, the Lander 5 could make a solid little $30 EDC.

As brands, even Knafs, make over-the-top quality knives at premium prices, there’s still plenty of room in the market for something that finds a balance between price and reliability.

For months, I’ve been hiking and running in the Sierra Mountains, traipsing sandstone cliffs in Utah, and recreating in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, barefoot. Or, at least, close to barefoot, while wearing the minimalist zero-drop Notace Yama T1 shoes.

Barefoot running has reached a surprising level of popularity. People have latched onto the idea that zero-drop “barefoot shoes” can support the body’s natural mechanics by facilitating movement that reduces impact. That concept is what drove the Boulder, Colo.-based running brand Notace to launch its first shoe, the Yama T1.

Notace’s founder, Cedric Scotto, leveraged his background in footwear manufacturing and biomechanics to introduce this Japanese-inspired barefoot shoe that combines simplicity with a natural design. I put around 100 miles on these shoes during my testing. Here’s what I learned about the Yama T1 along the way.

In short: The Notace Yama T1 ($180) is a minimalist, zero-drop hiking and running shoe designed to support the body’s natural biomechanics. It has a wide toe box, reinforced side panels, and an eTPU midsole. The simple design is rugged despite being so light, and it stood up to 100 miles’ worth of abrasions. Notace Barefoot Shoe Review

As someone who’s always looking for new ways to support a connection with the outdoors, these barefoot shoes seemed to promise me exactly what I was looking for.

The idea is, barefoot shoes like the Yama T1 encourage a (more natural) forefoot strike, instead of a (less natural) heel strike. That supposedly reduces impact and allows the body to run as it was designed to. I was excited to put them to the test.

Initial Impressions

Right out of the box, the Yama 1 greeted me with comfort. They fit easily over my foot, and were comfortable to walk around in.

However, from the start, the tongue of the shoe began curling in on the sides. That hasn’t changed in over 100 miles of hiking and running. While it’s relatively easy to adjust manually with a finger before lacing up your shoes, it’s annoying. I’ve only ever experienced this issue with the La Sportiva T.C. Pro climbing shoes (which were comfortable enough to ignore the tongue).

On my first run, I hit a trail that was close to home in the Rockies. It was well-trafficked, hard-packed dirt with dozens of small hills where I could take these shoes for a spin. As I crested the first hill on the trail, I noticed a touch of rubbing from the rigid lip of the heel. But after loosening the laces on these shoes a few times, the issue seemed to subside.

On the descent, my heel stayed in place, preventing my toes from jamming in the foot box. And my toes were able to splay out naturally, increasing my balance along the way. About 5 miles later, I’d experienced almost no foot fatigue. I definitely could’ve kept going.

Comfort & Fit

While Notace suggests sizing up by half a number in these shoes, my standard size felt roomy enough lengthwise and just as comfortable widthwise. The toe box, while not specifically designed for wide feet, provided plenty of room for my toes to help me maintain balance.

The mid-foot felt snug without being overly constrictive, maintaining support and affording control. If you have the option to try these shoes on before buying, it might be a good idea.

Build & Details

The Notace Yama 1 is ultralight. A woman’s size 9 weighs just 7.5 ounces. That would make them the third lightest shoe on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Shoes. Lower weights make a big difference when it comes to reducing foot fatigue.

These barefoot shoes come with a 3mm removable insole. The lugs have a height of 3mm, the total stack height is 15 mm, with a 0mm drop height from heel to toe.

The midsole of the Yama 1 is made from an engineered eTPU, known for its durability, flexibility, and energy return. But in barefoot shoes like these, the runner should expect minimal return, since the body absorbs the majority of the impact.

The upper materials of the Yama 1 feature a double mesh construction, which supports breathability while also adding durability to the shoe.

Price & Affordability

The retail price of the Yama 1 is $180, which is competitive with some barefoot shoes such as the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit Shoe. But it’s about double the cost of Xero and Lems Shoes. Compared with the shoes on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Shoes, they’d be the third most expensive on the list. While the Yama’s current price point isn’t unreasonable, it might make price-conscious spenders think twice.

Trail Performance

At one point, I took these shoes down a wet canyon in the Utah desert to test their ability to withstand moisture. The upper mesh design kept my feet feeling dry and comfortable while I ran across sandy banks.

Eventually, I descended into the creek, fully committing to submerging them in the water time and time again. To my surprise, the Yama 1 drained extremely well. Instead of manually emptying my shoes every time I crossed the river or waiting for the moisture to evaporate, the mesh naturally allowed the water to slip out from the shoe interior before beginning the drying process.

Once I’d ascended out of the canyon, I ran across a series of sand-covered hills, which is where these shoes truly excelled. In environments where there’s little debris or opportunity to run over sharp and pointy objects, these shoes made me feel more connected to the environment without increasing my risk of injury.

Room for Improvement: Grip & Sole

My biggest complaint about the Notace Yama 1 is that it lacks grip. While these shoes performed moderately well in sand, on dirt, and on low inclines, they were less effective at keeping me feeling sure-footed while navigating steep, slick rock, and wet surfaces.

On one occasion, I wore these shoes while canyoneering in Utah to test their durability, and found myself regretting the choice since they felt unpredictable and unlikely to support rock hopping on the ascent. While the reinforced side panels stood up nicely to the abrasive desert, the soles of these shoes left something to be desired, despite their multi-directional lug pattern.

Notace Yama T1 Barefoot Shoes: Conclusion

As someone who’s struggled with chronic plantar fasciitis and has even had surgery on one plantar plate, I went into the testing of these shoes cautiously and skeptically. However, after a few months of testing and approximately 100 miles of usage, I found myself open to incorporating this shoe into some of my regular mountain treks due to its comfort, performance, and durability. I even started wearing them for weight lifting at the gym.

The Notace Yama 1 offers a great barefoot shoe option for those who tend to recreate on well-groomed and developed trails. Their lack of protection can make encountering gravel and large rocks uncomfortable. And their questionable grip makes them less favorable for highly technical trails. Yet they remain nimble, comfortable, and durable even after 100 miles of usage.
