The moment it became clear was halfway up Teton Pass’s Taylor Mountain at sunrise. I was skinning in that quiet blue hour, expecting the usual ultralight-boot experience: a cramped toe box, midfoot pressure, and the slightly awkward stride I’ve learned to endure on big climbs. Instead, the TLT X moved with me. My stride felt almost too smooth for a touring boot, and my feet stayed warm.

I’ve done this climb countless times, and this was the first time I caught myself thinking more about the sky turning pink overhead than about what was on my feet. Throughout that tour, I also realized how much less time I was spending adjusting buckles or fighting with mode switches. The boot simply let me move, settle into my rhythm, and stay focused on the mountains rather than the gear.

A few days later, on a longer push into Death Canyon, the benefits became even more obvious. I covered more vert with less fatigue, and instead of the usual hot spots forming beneath my forefoot, my feet felt fresh by the time I reached the top. On long approaches, ultralight boots usually expose their compromises; the TLT X instead felt like it was quietly removing barriers, letting me spend more time actually adventuring.

In short: The Dynafit TLT X ($500) is comfortable, has a generous fit, and a smooth glide on the skin track. It climbs fast, moves naturally, and its Grilamid shell has enough backbone for plenty of backcountry laps. Transitions allow you to spend less time fussing with buckles and more time enjoying the runs. If you live for long approaches and that smooth uphill rhythm, this is as close as a ski boot gets to feeling like a hiking boot.

Dynafit TLT X Ski Touring Boot Review

Uphill Performance

The uphill performance of the TLT X is what sets it apart from every lightweight boot I’ve used in the past decade. On big days in the Tetons and long spring missions in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, it consistently felt like the easiest boot to climb in. The cuff pivots freely with almost no resistance, allowing each step to settle into a natural rhythm that smooths out steep climbs.

Compared to other lightweight boots, the difference is immediate. The Scarpa F1 LT has good mobility, but it never felt as relaxed or fluid on steep kick turns. The Tecnica Zero G Tour Pro is a fantastic boot, yet it’s much stiffer on the uphill and more restrictive during long side hills.

What I appreciate most is how seamless the walk mode felt. Transitions were fast and intuitive thanks to the single-lever system (more on that below). On fast laps on Teton Pass or while linking peaks in Colorado, that quick mode switch added noticeable efficiency.

The TLT X also performed exceptionally well while boot packing, scrambling over rocks, and climbing in crampons. The minimal resistance and friction-free motion helped the boot feel secure and agile when the terrain steepened, offering more confidence on mixed ascents than many boots in this weight class.

Downhill Performance

Dropping into Taylor Peak after a long climb, I expected the TLT X to feel soft and hesitant. But it held its own. The flex of the Grilamid shell was predictable and supportive enough for soft snow and moderate speeds.

In deep powder, it felt playful and surprisingly stable for its weight. On variable or refrozen surfaces, its limits showed up sooner than those of heavier touring boots — a known tradeoff with fast-and-light designs.

Compared directly to the Scarpa F1 LT, I felt the TLT X skied with more composure. The F1 LT felt twitchier at speed and less supportive on firm entrances, while the TLT X provided a smoother, more centered flex that let me stay balanced without constant micro-adjustments. It still fell short of heavier boots, such as the Scarpa Maestrale or Maestrale RS, in choppy or heavier snow, but that’s expected in this category.

One area where the TLT X surprised me was in chalky, midwinter conditions. I skied a few laps on Coal Creek, where the snow was firm enough to expose weaknesses in ultralight boots. The TLT X stayed predictable as long as I stayed centered, and it never buckled forward the way some ultralight boots can when they’re under pressure.

It rewarded a smooth skier and felt best when I was guiding the ski rather than muscling it. Within those limits, it felt composed and trustworthy.

Comfort, Fit, and Warmth

The fit of the TLT X won me over instantly, especially since I have wider feet. The 101 mm last was more forgiving than most lightweight touring boots I’ve tested. The toe box felt roomy without being sloppy, and the Twistfit system (a BOA-like dial) wrapped my midfoot evenly, eliminating pressure points. I also appreciated being able to fine-tune tension without taking off my gloves.

Although it feels roomy, the TLT X is technically a neutral-last boot, offering broad appeal across various foot shapes. The thin, minimalist liner still requires a precise fit — a characteristic of all ultralight touring boots.

Warmth was another surprise. On cold December mornings in the Tetons, my feet stayed warmer than I expected. But during a January deep freeze, I missed the insulation of my Maestrales; 1 kg touring boots use thin liners and lightweight shells, so warmth is always a compromise.

The TLT X is still warmer than many ultralight competitors. But it isn’t the boot I’d recommend for deep-winter objectives unless you run hot. It sits near the top of the warmth range for true ultralight designs, yet falls short of midweight touring boots built for colder conditions.

Weight

Featherweight efficiency sits at the heart of the TLT X. The boot falls firmly into the one-kilogram class, and I felt that immediately on the skin track. It’s lighter than most traditional touring boots, and that drop in weight translates to a smoother stride, less fatigue, and more efficient movement.

On long missions — linking ridgelines in the Tetons or grinding vert in the Sawatch Range — the difference became obvious within minutes. For skiers who prioritize efficiency, long tours, and big-mile days, this ski boot delivers an uphill experience few boots can match.

Ease of Use

Ease of use is one of the defining strengths of the TLT X. Its one-motion transition between ski and walk mode is among the best in the lightweight touring category, and on fast fitness laps or multi-lap mornings on Teton Pass, that quick switch gave the boot a noticeable efficiency advantage.

A single lever controls both cuff tension and the ski–walk lock. Open it, and the cuff swings freely with a wide, natural range of motion for climbing or scrambling. Close it, and the cuff anchors to the lower shell in one smooth movement, creating a stable descending platform without the usual fiddling.

Because the mechanism is fully enclosed, it avoids the exposed interfaces that can ice up on boots like the Scarpa Maestrale, making transitions more reliable in cold or stormy conditions.

The Twistfit system deserves credit here, too. It tightened evenly across the midfoot with a quick turn, even while I was wearing gloves, and made micro-adjustments incredibly easy on the fly. For day-to-day touring, that simplicity added to the boot’s overall efficiency.

One limitation worth noting is that cable-and-dial systems like Twistfit are harder to field-repair than traditional buckles. I haven’t had failures, but it’s something to consider for remote objectives where improvising a fix becomes more difficult.

Room for Improvement

The TLT X has its limits. Downhill performance is the biggest one. For its weight, it skis well, but it cannot match the power or stability of heavier touring boots. On firm snow, bigger bowls, or wider skis, its limits become clear, but in soft snow on lighter setups, I found my groove.

Warmth is another tradeoff. It’s warmer than some competitors, but ultimately it’s still a 1kg boot with a thin liner. On frigid midwinter days, my feet got cold faster than in midweight boots with Intuition liners.

Who It’s For

The TLT X is ideal for skiers who value uphill speed, all-day comfort, and natural movement. It shines on long spring missions, fitness laps, multi-peak linkups in the Tetons, and Colorado fourteeners.

Newer backcountry skiers will appreciate its forgiving fit and intuitive closure, but may want something stiffer for big descents. Experienced tourers will love the smooth stride, efficiency, and how the boot disappears beneath them on the climb.

For skiers who prioritize transitions, long approaches, and precise footwork on mixed terrain, these touring boots offer one of the most streamlined and efficient experiences in the ultralight category. Mandi Blewett had been operating an angling lodge on British Columbia’s Dean River for a decade when the flood came. In 2010, record rains deluged the region, and the river spilled over its banks. The torrent was so violent that it altered the course of the river, which slithered toward their home and business.

“It was running right in front of our lodge. And it just ate away,” Blewett told GearJunkie. “We knew we had to move.”

When the water had receded, Blewett, her then-husband, and their two girls, Dylan and Zoe, relocated their lives and livelihood a kilometer downstream. It was a tremendous effort, she said, but it opened up a world of possibilities for her business and family. Chief among them was the potential to become a heli-skiing operation.

So when construction finally came to an end, the family applied for a heli tenure — essentially a permit to operate a heli-skiing business in an exclusive area of Canada’s “Crown land” (i.e., public land).

“We asked for the world and expected we’d get some tiny little piece,” Mandi said. “And instead, we kind of got a huge tenure.”

They got 6,250 square kilometers, to be exact (3,883 square miles). Suddenly, the once-small, three-season angling lodge had become a full-scale four-season heli-skiing operation. The family named it Great Bear Heli Skiing and opened its doors in 2022.

Then, in 2023, Mandi and her husband separated. Her two now-grown daughters, Mandi and Zoe, became her business partners, and in doing so, Great Bear Heli Skiing became the only heli-skiing operation in North America owned and operated by women.

It might also be the most boutique, all-inclusive heli-skiing experience money can buy — for those who can afford the five- and six-figure price tags.

Great Bear Heli Skiing: A Family Operation

The Blewett family loved skiing, long before owning a heli-ski operation was even a dream.

“Mom and Dad were skiing in and around Bella Coola when we were really young. And I remember we’d go to a tiny little toe hill there that we learned on,” Mandi recalled. “I just remember being like two or three and trying to ski and just getting stuck in powder all the time.”

As the years went on, their love for skiing and connection to the sport grew exponentially. Zoe has become a sponsored athlete with K2 and Dakine and has appeared in several ski films, including K2’s Rikka and Laura Obermeyer’s film Jyosi.

Today, Mandi is the CEO of Great Bear Heli Skiing. Dylan, the eldest daughter, serves as the general manager. Zoe, the youngest, is on the business’s marketing team and also works as a pastry chef. All three Blewetts co-own the business together.

“It’s all a blur, man,” Dylan said. “We’ve been working our butts off. And every time you turn around, something’s happening.”

Asked what it meant to be the only female-owned and -operated heli skiing operation in North America, they shrugged nonchalantly.

“Gender-specific roles have just never been a thing here,” Mandi said. “To be honest, we hadn’t really even thought about it until it started getting pointed out to us.”

They didn’t plan to make Great Bear a women-owned and operated business — it just happened that way, they said. Still, it’s a badge they seem honored to wear.

“If we can empower other women to pursue their dreams and not be restrained by being female in a lot of these really male-dominated worlds … that’s pretty cool,” Mandi said.

All Inclusive, Unlimited Vertical, All to Yourself

Surrounded by much larger heli skiing operations like Bella Coola Heli Skiing and Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH), Great Bear Heli Skiing is unique among its neighboring competition. This is about as far from a generic heli-skiing experience as you can get, the Blewetts said.

For one, it’s so remote that guests actually take a helicopter shuttle straight from the Vancouver Airport to the Great Bear Lodge. There are no buses, Ubers, or van rides to reach them.

Once there, it’s totally hands-free. Gourmet meals are home-prepared for guests, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There’s a wood-fired sauna, a cold plunge shower, and a cocktail bar. The guest lodges all have their own fireplaces, cast iron stoves, and bathrooms with heated floors. Ski equipment and avalanche safety gear are provided. There’s even massage therapy available.

Of course, the skiing is the main attraction. According to the Blewetts, it’s downright world-class. Their 6,250-square-kilometer tenure is a quarter of the size of the European Alps.

The terrain is situated between the Central Coast and the eastern edge of the Great Bear Rainforest. Average snowfall in the alpine areas of this region often exceeds 120 inches a year.

For the price (we’ll get there in a minute), your trip includes unlimited vertical. So you can heli ski until your legs give out. And because it’s exclusive to Great Bear, you’ll only ever have to share that terrain with — at most — 12 other people. Sometimes less.

Their operation is also highly reliable. Thanks to a smooth local climate, Great Bear reports seeing less than one day per week when the helicopters can’t fly.

Most of Great Bear’s runs are within a short helicopter ride from the lodge. And Zoe pointed out that they cater to every type of skier — not just experts. While they recommend that clients have at least some intermediate skiing experience, the lodge also offers suitable terrain for beginners.

“Anyone can heli ski, and that’s something that a lot of people just don’t realize,” Zoe said.

What It Will Cost You

If an all-inclusive, unlimited vertical heli skiing experience sounds like an expensive vacation, that’s because it is. Great Bear’s cheapest option is the 4-Day Premium Package, which is only offered in April and costs $20,000 CAD ($14,531) per person. The Standard Program, which runs all season, is $25,720 CAD ($18,688) per head.

Then, you have the private program for one group of up to four, which costs $158,650 CAD ($115,273), and the Semi Private Program, for two groups of up to eight, which is $239,920 CAD ($174,322).

The final price tier is the Exclusive Booking, which reserves use of the entire Great Bear Heli Skiing lodge for a single group for $308,604 CAD ($224,227).

Even compared to some of Bella Coola’s most expensive trips, those are impressive price tags. However, Zoe emphasized that what they offer is more than just simple heli laps. It’s a personalized experience that no other operation duplicates, they said. The Blewetts cater to their guests, make sure everyone is having a good time, and add that special touch, they told GearJunkie.

There are other reasons for the high prices as well, according to the business’s fine print. Examples include the preparatory costs involved with running a remote operation and employment commitments made to the staff.

The operation may be new, but it’s got plenty of return customers who have experienced Great Bear — and already want to relive it.

Zeb Powell is one of the greatest snowboarders of all time, renowned for his distinctive style and exceptional freeride skills. He teamed up with ThirtyTwo to launch his signature boot, the ThirtyTwo Lashed Double BOA X POWELL ($350), a medium-soft boot. After I field tested these boots in Colorado, I found that the design channels power (and style) with every jump, carve, and rail. 

Starting at the bones, the boot comes with ThirtyTwo’s Team Fit liner, which offers medium support and flex. It also offers enhanced comfort via a 3D-moulded tongue. I loved the Velcro power strap at the top, which I kept tight for locked-in riding and loose for surfier park laps. The liner includes ThirtyTwo’s unique heel hold kit: adjustable foam inserts at the heels to prevent them from lifting in your boot. Additionally, the liners are heat moldable — but you need to take them to a qualified board shop, which may be a drive and some extra cash. 

Holding the liner to your foot is a unique integrated harness system inside the boot. This harness — which is not connected to the liner — cinches down evenly over the heel and ankle of your foot, ensuring the liner underneath remains snug without pressure points. It’s one of my favorite liner tightening systems. 

Tightening down the rest of the boot is left to a Dual BOA Fit System featuring TX3 lace. One BOA tightens down the zone around the calf. The second BOA tightens down the top of the foot and ankle. Two BOAs lead to a much more personalized, comfortable fit. Riders can lock in the lower zone while leaving the upper-calf area loose for a surfier ride sans heel lift. 

Zeb’s signature boot wouldn’t be complete without his on-point style. The boot comes in black and olive grey, featuring a unique camouflage tree bark pattern, plus Zeb’s signature over a blue snowboarder — a tribute to the Michael Jordan logo he loved growing up. Sweet! 

Overall, these medium-flex, central price-tier boots are a great option for park and freestyle riders looking to emulate some of Zeb’s riding style and looks. I found that the flex and fit proved to be a comfortable boot that’s perfect for carving groomed runs, smashing park jumps, and pressing down rails or boxes. That said, I wouldn’t choose this boot for bigger all-mountain riding, as it really shines for cruisers and slopestyle.

In terms of performance, the Head Raker BOA Zonal ($369) pair is designed for a variety of terrains. I felt it was suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, although beginners might appreciate the comfort of these boots — they are some of the most comfortable boots I have tested and would love for bell-to-bell days. Designed for all-mountain riders seeking a balance of comfort and support, the standout design detail of the Raker BOA is its dual BOA Fit System, which includes a BOA Coiler for the shell and a zonal BOA system for the liner, along with a heat-moldable liner for a customized, dialed fit.  

As far as stoutness, Head rates this snowboard boot at a 7 out of 10 on the stiffness scale. Though I felt it rode more like a 5. The cuff feels flexible, enabling a more natural range of motion. While walking from the parking lot to the base area, the lightweight outsole provides superior traction, essential for maintaining stability on various surfaces. Furthermore, the boot incorporates coffee grounds into the textile of the liners, which helps reduce body odor while promoting sustainability — a win-win. 

Additionally, the boot’s shell and liner construction is shaped to accommodate a higher instep (including more room on the top of the foot). This shape particularly benefits the interior (medial) side of hte foot, where many riders feel pressure. Also, the toebox is more anatomically shaped, so the toes sit naturally without being compressed.  

The boot’s BOA tightens around the midfoot and ankle, rather than just the cuff, to help the heel stay planted. However, my one major complaint about these snowboard boots is that the external shell relies solely on a single BOA. This means it pulls harder on the wire closest to the BOA while the wire near the toes contains slack. I would love to see this boot in the future as a three-BOA system with one for the liner, another for the foot, and a third for the calf zone. I will say that having less pressure on the foot and toebox did provide a more comfortable ride. Although, in my opinion, it slightly sacrifices performance. 

These Raker boots offer advanced characteristics that enhance my resort experience. Its dual BOA Fit System, heat-moldable liner, and ergonomic design contribute to a comfortable, secure fit. The boot’s flexibility and traction make it suitable for all-mountain riding. For riders seeking a boot that delivers exceptional comfort with performance, the Raker BOA Zonal is a compelling choice.

Throughout my field testing of snowboard boots at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, I found that the Burton Photon BOA Snowboard Boots ($480) provide a solid package: comfort, control, and quick-lace convenience. That said, comfort is the standout feature of the Photon BOA boots, which are dually responsive and stout. On my first day of testing, I felt good enough to stop a few backflips, something that normally takes a few days of getting comfortable in boots beforehand. The Total Comfort Construction ensures an instantly broken-in feel right out of the box, eliminating the typical break-in period associated with snowboard boots.

Providing warmth, the integrated reflective foil underfoot radiates heat back to the foot, enhancing warmth and comfort in cold conditions, making it perfect for mid-winter riding. The Photon also has B3 gel cushioning, which provides damping. Featuring a Dual-Zone BOA Fit System, this pair provides precise adjustments in the upper and lower zones. This ensured a secure fit around the ankle and forefoot. 

The Imprint 3 heat-moldable liner, combined with the Focus Cuff heel hold system, delivers enhanced response and support, making it suitable for all-mountain adventures. Additionally, the Vibram Traction Lug outsole (made of EcoStep rubber) offers excellent grip and durability, which I tested out while hiking in CBMR’s Extremes and bootpacking beside jumps in the backcountry. 

However, I did have some concerns regarding the durability of the Photon BOA boots. After a few days of resort laps, these Burton boots exhibited signs of wear, particularly around the stitching areas. That type of early-stage breakdown can lead to structural issues, in my experience. Also, while the boots are very comfortable, I experienced a slight heel lift on steeper, very aggressive runs. I think this is in part due to the liner’s cushion around the Achilles, which does not hold the heel down as well as the liners in ThirtyTwo or Salomon boots that I’ve tested.

In conclusion, the Burton Photon BOA Snowboard Boots offer a combination of comfort, adjustability, and performance attributes that cater to riders seeking a responsive and supportive boot. While some boots are tailored for advanced to expert riders, I believe these boots would also be great for intermediate riders. While there are some concerns about long-term durability, the overall design and technology incorporated into the Photo BOA make it a solid choice for snowboarders seeking an enhanced on-mountain experience, from the downhill to the bootpack.

Throughout test rounds, I primarily used this boot for all-mountain resort riding. But the built-in half snow gaiter and quick-release power strap transform this boot into a side-country charger, making it at home on short bootpacks or even light tours.

Comfort is another standout feature of the Echo Lace SJ BOA. The Precision Liner has heat-moldable and multi-density foams. I found that the Quickdry insole worked well, and didn’t get smelly even after big days on the hill. I also thought the Ortholite Eco-Hybrid footbed was pretty comfortable for a stock footbed! Bonus: The footbed is made with recycled and bio-sourced materials. Likewise, the FUZE SURGE midsole is composed of 30% natural rubber and 78% recycled 3M Thinsulate insulation. 

I haven’t seen any serious durability concerns during testing, but a portion of the laces passes through fabric loops instead of metal eyelets. This fabric-on-fabric friction can lead to faster wear of the laces or eyelets, which were starting to show deterioration on my test boots. Additionally, these boots, while great for steep double black runs, might be a bit too stiff and aggressive for an intermediate rider.

If you’re on the hunt for a high-performance pair, scope out the Echo Lace SJ BOA snowboard boots. One thing to note: While the boots provide a responsive and comfortable ride, the laces may wear out faster than a traditional BOA system. Also, I would only recommend these for hard-charging resort riders. This design provides a high-performance option for riders who prioritize fit, comfort, and environmental responsibility.

Have a few seasons under your belt? The 2025 K2 Orton Men’s Snowboard Boots ($450) are a standout option for advanced shredders.  The design is super warm, while the structure offers consistent flex without sacrificing responsiveness. Fewer boots are more reliable day in, day out, compared to the Orton. 

Developed in collaboration with Olympic gold medalist Sage Kotsenburg, these boots are a powerful driver on the resort. That said, comfort is paramount in the Orton’s design. The Intuition Pro Foam 3D liner, combined with heat-reflective SpaceHeater technology, offers a customizable fit that keeps feet warm and comfortable in cold conditions. On a backcountry snowmobile-powered tour in -15 degree temps, our toes were pleasantly warm. I really liked the 3-point harness liner lacing system, which enhanced ankle support and stability — without causing painful pressure points. It feels like a beefed-up version of the ThirtyTwo system. Additionally, the inclusion of S’Cafe Coffee Mesh, made from recycled coffee grounds, provides effective odor control and moisture management, contributing to a more pleasant gear room!

Throughout resort laps, I found that the fit of the Orton boots hugged my feet and didn’t pack out despite stacking vert. That’s thanks to its dual-zone H4/M3 Coiler BOA Fit System. The TX3 BOA laces are made from recycled PET, which feel soft and flexible — but durability is in question. Underfoot, the Vibram V5 outsole (made with 30% recycled rubber) provides exceptional grip while walking around the icy base area and parking lots. 

These boots are stiff — some of the stiffest I’ve ever tested — and while that directly translates to performance, it also comes with a few drawbacks. First, these boots are considerably harder and more time-consuming to put on than traditional boots due to its rigid construction. 

Second, these boots took longer to break in and get adjusted to. Even walking around the base area, the stiffness had me adjusting my gait. But once you step into your bindings, that stiffness directly translates to performance, initiating turns, jumps, and slashes almost as fast as our reaction times. It’s almost like these boots can see into the future and react accordingly!

The Orton is innovative and sturdy from in-bounds sessions to the backcountry. These boots come at a price tag that might make some riders flinch. However, I believe the cost is a tradeoff for durability — I’d rather buy a solid pair for the long haul than blow through a boot every season. For those seeking a boot that delivers on all fronts, the Orton is one of the most compelling.

Built for more vert-packing riders, the Ride Lasso Pro Snowboard Boots ($420) are a responsive, high-performance boot. Straight out of the box, the Lasso Pro rode exceptionally well, inspiring confidence, and I thought it was comfortable too, with no pinch points. On winter’s coldest days, I appreciated the integrated Heat Reflective Foil underfoot, which retained warmth when the wind picked up at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. 

The boot’s IN2GRATED Construction results in a lightweight design with a precise fit, reducing foot fatigue during long sessions. The Black Gold Liner Mesh (infused with bamboo charcoal) helps with moisture management and odor control, which I noticed during warm spring days while tackling steep vertical in Crested Butte’s Extremes. 

With a stiff flex rating of 8/10, it provides excellent support for aggressive riding across various terrains, complemented by medium responsiveness. The boot has Ride’s H4 BOA Coiler Fit System combined with the Tongue Tied internal lacing, ensuring a secure fit and heel hold. This internal BOA system allows for precise adjustment of the ankle hold without the need for an internal harness, such as the Burton Photon. A full Intuition Trap Wrap Liner, along with internal and external J Bars, enhances ankle support, external shin padding, and overall comfort. Additionally, the Michelin Summit Sole provides durable traction, making it suitable for gripping bindings or hiking. 

However, I had some qualms with the boot’s lacing system. Specifically, the single-zone BOA system for the shell can lead to uneven tightness. Upon tightening, the upper boot becomes overly tight without tightening the lower foot, then during riding, the lower foot becomes overly tight while the upper boot loosens. This led to some foot discomfort, necessitating frequent adjustments throughout the day. 

After putting ‘em through the grindstone in steep terrain, the Ride Lasso Pro is a stiff and stout yet pretty comfortable option. If you’re an expert rider and value a boot that stays in place, this is a great option. Few designs offer better heel hold and responsiveness. However, potential buyers should be aware of the issues with the external lacing system.

We’ve faced numerous challenges in finding the best-fitting snowboard boots, due to foot shape and injuries, and are aware of the obstacles.

While testing our boots, we consider overall fit, stiffness level, durability, comfort, support, outsole grip, warmth, insulation, odor resistance, heel loop, tread, and lace design. We also consider the most popular, highly rated, and legacy products across a range of price points, performance, and style.

We test our products under various conditions, including different riding styles and seasons, ranging from cold mid-winter powder days to slushy spring park laps. We put each boot through a variety of conditions and paces so you don’t have to. 

But boots are also subjectively ideal for certain feet. For reference, Eric Phillips has wide and large feet. Snowboard boot tester Drew Zieff has narrow feet and, unfortunately, long second toes. We definitely recommend trying on your boots — or 12 of them — to narrow down which brand’s last is the best fit for you.

Lacing Systems

The lacing system refers to the method by which a snowboard boot is closed and tightened around the foot. There are three main types of lacing systems, as well as some that combine elements of both. 

Traditional Laces

Traditional laces refer to a soft lace, like those found on shoes, that closes all the way up the boot. Riders like these options because they are simple, easy to refine, and most importantly, easy to replace if anything fails. Traditionally, snowboard boots have always been laced, but the industry is shifting away from these and toward the BOA system. 

Quick Pull

Quick pull systems refer to pulling one set of strings at the top of the boot that quickly cinch down a wire. Conventional quick-pull closure systems are faster and easier to operate while wearing gloves. Various designs exist across brands, like the speed zone lacing on the Burton Supreme. They are similar to a BOA, but instead of twisting a knob, you just pull the wire directly. 

BOA

The BOA Fit system was first introduced in 2001 in collaboration with brand partners Vans and K2. Since its inception, BOA technology has been embedded across 330 brands, with a particular focus on the snowboard boot industry. The BOA system uses a simple dial knob to tighten a boot; simply spin the knob, and it automatically tightens the wire. To release, just pop the knob outward, releasing all tension. 

The knob tightens with a click, often leading to more precise adjustability and a tighter latch compared to traditional laces. The downside of BOA is that they are more complex than laces and can sometimes break. The good news is that all BOA System dials and laces are guaranteed for the lifetime of the product on which they are integrated. Break a lace or dial, and BOA will send you a repair kit or repair the product themselves. 

BOA systems can come with one, two, or even three closure systems per boot. The more BOAs, the more precise you can be with adjustability and hold, such as a loose ankle but a tight foot or vice versa. Single BOA closure systems can often create unequal pull, tightening the boot closer to the BOA more than the other wires. On the other hand, two or three BOA systems are often more expensive and have more parts that can break in the backcountry. 

Liner and Footbed

The liner is a boot-shaped layer that fits inside the boot’s exterior shell and holds your foot securely in place. Most liners are removable, which is helpful for drying them out after a long day.

Liners are typically constructed with EVA foam, a lightweight and malleable polymer. The foam provides a cushion-like feel and stabilizes the foot. Some liners are heat-moldable, which is great for a more custom fit and shorter break-in period. 

The liner slides into a boot and is cradled by its own lace system, which typically tightens down with a drawstring that also has a release tab. For a better fit, it’s essential to secure the internal harness before tightening the exterior lace system. Some liners now feature integrated BOA systems, such as the HEAD Raken BOA. Be sure to snugly tighten the liner before starting on the exterior shell. 

The footbed is removable, so you can upgrade with an aftermarket option that provides tailored support or cushion.

It’s also worth noting that liners are the source of stinky boots, and more and more brands are experimenting with materials that seek to minimize offensive odors. K2, for instance, equipped the Trance with a moisture-managing mesh manufactured from post-consumer polyester and coffee grounds. However, the best way to combat odors is to keep your boots dry. 

Outsole 

The outsole is the rubber located on the underside of the boot, which grips both your snowboard binding while riding, and also the snow, ice, and rocks when walking or pushing. Each boot has a unique lug design and outsole material to help provide great traction while walking on sidewalks or up a slope.

The Ride Lasso Pro sports a Michelin-branded outsole that’s perfect for an all-mountain boot — it’s grippy on slick surfaces, capable of scrambling, and isn’t so bulky that it minimizes downhill performance.

If you’re in the market for a backcountry or splitboard mountaineering boot, pay attention to this feature. Look for an outsole with aggressive lugs and dependable, well-vetted materials, such as the Vibram V5 outsole on the K2 Orton.

Flex and Riding Style

One of the biggest differentiators for snowboard boots is the flex profile and the rider’s preferred riding style. A snowboard boot designed for backcountry use isn’t going to ride well in the park or for a beginner rider. Be sure to match the flex and riding style of prospective boots with your own style. Let’s break down the flex profile a bit more below. 

Snowboard boots are constructed with a flex range from soft to medium to stiff. Often, brands use a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the stiffest.

Softer boots typically pack out and break down more quickly, while stiffer boots last longer and are more expensive. 

We’ll dive more into the specifics below, but ultimately, the ideal flex of a snowboard boot hinges on personal preference and foot needs.

• 1-4: These are softer boots with forgiving flex and comfortable constructions. These boots are great for beginners, but that’s not all: They are also ideal for jibbing, freestyle riding, and tweaking grabs.
• 5-7: These are moderately stiff boots, a solid middle ground for intermediate riders and all-mountain riding. These boots are the most versatile boots, capable of cruising through the park and ripping the entire resort.
• 8-10: These are the stiffest boots out there. These boots are more suited to expert-level riders who demand instantaneous response. They are best for aggressive all-mountain riding and, even more so, unadulterated freeriding.

Comfort 

A boot’s overall comfort is delivered through the combination of the midsole, liner, and footbed, as well as the level of overall support, which prevents fatigue. For instance, the Head Raken BOA snowboard boot has a Wrap Fit system, which adapts to the midfoot for optimal heel hold and a better connection to the midsole. This design offers more freedom in the forefoot area, resulting in a precise and uniform fit that ensures optimal comfort.

Sometimes, comfort and performance don’t go hand in hand, with super-stiff, extreme-performance boots not being the most comfortable for long days, while other, more comfortable boots aren’t as responsive.

A soft boot might provide immediate comfort. But a softer boot doesn’t necessarily deliver stability for preserving energy on a bell-to-bell or big-objective day. All considered, what feels most comfortable is based on each rider’s preference and foot needs.

Price & Value

Our favorite snowboard boots range from $200 to $550. On the lower end, you’ll find a more forgiving construction, which translates to a softer boot that’ll also break down faster. The higher the price, the more built-out the boot is with high-end materials that are more durable and technical for various terrains, such as booting up an in-bounds hike or hiking along a ridge. Generally, more expensive boots are more suitable for experienced riders and off-piste terrain.

Budget

The budget tier refers to any snowboard boot priced below $300. These lower-priced boots are a great starting point for beginner and intermediate riders. While they might not be as feature-packed or aggressive, they will still help you lace turns down the mountain. 

Mid-Tier

At the mid-tier, $300-420 is the sweet spot for most riders, as you’ll find everything from premium freestyle boots to burly freeride boots in this range.

At the lower end of this price range, you’ll find simpler, straightforward boots, such as traditionally laced models. As you move up in price range, the boots generally switch to the BOA fit system. A great lower-priced mid-tier option is the Thirty Two lashed double BOA X POWELL snowboard boots ($350). Near the higher end of this tier are boots like the Salomon Echo Lace SJ BOA snowboard boots ($420) and the Ride Lasso Pro Snowboard Boots ($420). Here, you will find stronger lace systems, more complex tread and rubber in the outsole, and textiles or layers that rebound and regulate body heat to help your feet stay warm. You also start to advance from a soft to a moderately stiff boot.

Premium

Above $450, you’ll find more specialized and stiffer boots. These boots are exceptionally stiff and tailored to the advanced and expert riders. Beginners should generally stay away from this price range, with the exception of step-in boots like the Burton Photon Step On ($480), which has a medium degree of stiffness. There’s this one distinct section of my favorite touring zone that confounds most layering strategies. It’s about an hour into the tour and nearly 2,000 vertical feet into the climbing when the forest yields to an icy wind-battered ridgeline that bends up even steeper. The topography creates a frigid micro-climate of wind and tundra. Yet I consistently overheat in a hardshell as I trudge upward.

As I approached it in Norrøna’s Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants, I had the inkling that I might have found the solution — a softshell jacket and pants combo breathable enough for a steep skin track but burly enough for the harsh winter gusts. The combo clicked. I was able to push through the section to the powder stash without drenching the jacket from the inside.

The Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants are a long-overdue softshell entry for the Norwegian brand, known for its ultra-protective ski apparel. The Jacket is a long, slender, yet versatile softshell. The pants lean toward utilitarian and movement-oriented without compromising the aesthetic cut.

This kit kept my body temperature in harmony through many days in complicated early-season weather conditions. Norrøna finally gave the backcountry skiing softshell diehards what they’ve been requesting for years: a more breathable version of their iconic Lofoten outerwear. But like most softshells, there were a few instances where the kit just wasn’t the right tool for the job.

In short: The new Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants carry forward the line’s legacy with a long, aesthetic cut and fit that feels tailored. The softshell fabric substantially boosts breathability for the skin track and the long days under the sun, in the resort or out. In classic Norrøna fashion, the feature set is both dialed and minimalist, with options to boost the kit’s weather protection. But breathability always comes with a tradeoff.

Norrona Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants Review

Norrona’s Lofoten line has been a staple for the brand for over 20 years. But if there’s one thing the brand is known for, it’s wet weather protection. Its Norwegian homeland is one of the wettest places on Earth.

GORE-TEX is great for when you need bombproof weather protection. Water and wind don’t get past it, and it’s just breathable enough to resist getting clammy on the inside.

Still, though, it routinely feels like overkill on sunny days in Colorado’s backcountry. It’s easy to get hot fast when you’re hammering up the skin track. It was a pleasant surprise (and somewhat of a bombshell) when Norrøna announced a softshell version of its iconic Lofoten outerwear: the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Lofoten Flex1 Pants.

Lofoten Flex1 Jacket Details & Fit

The highlight of the Lofoten Flex1 jacket is the fit. True to the Lofoten reputation, the Jacket is decidedly long and relatively slim-fitting. It has a freeride shape without being outrageously stylish. It’s refreshingly modern and simultaneously timeless.

The bottom hem drops to my upper thighs. The sleeves are extra long and have articulated elbows, so they don’t creep up my wrist when I reach for a long pole plant or raise my hand above my head. It adds protection to the jacket’s boundaries, which was most welcome on gusty ridgelines.

At 6’1”, the large jacket fit about perfectly for skiing. It was slim enough to wear with just a sun hoodie underneath, but I had enough room to layer medium and heavy-duty midlayers underneath.

Most importantly for ski touring, the exterior profile was relatively slim. It accommodated over-the-shell insulation, such as Patagonia’s Das Light Hoody. In my opinion, good ski touring outerwear must seamlessly accommodate both.

The Lofoten Flex1’s details are simple in the best possible way. The jacket offers just two external chest pockets and one shoulder pocket for a ski pass. A well-designed helmet-compatible hood and big underarm vent zippers round it out.

Lofoten Flex1 Pants Details & Fit

The Lofoten Flex1 Pants follow the Jacket’s minimalist lead, offering first and foremost an outstanding fit and shape. Loose fitting but not baggy, while still being somewhat slim. They have an aesthetic freeride shape that would complement most skiers’ styles.

The size large was, in fact, a tiny bit big on my 33-inch waist. Velcro fasteners were up to the task of providing some level of pants security, even if I wouldn’t trust them to keep my pants up alone.

Thankfully, Norrona opted for a belt-and-suspenders approach — beefy belt loops accommodate my favorite webbing belt, and a zipper attachment for a sold-separately zip-in bib ($69) transforms the pants into much more protective soft-shell bib snowpants. The bibs simply zip into the teeth around the circumference of the pants’ waist.

With the bib deployed, I was able to forgo a belt and rely on the Velcro waist-tightening tabs on each hip. It kept the pants’ mobility excellent and kept the pants’ joints from migrating up and down during ski touring strides. The bib’s upper provides a tight seal to the body. Not a snowflake was able to creep in during the test period, even while flopping around in the powder.

Pants Pockets & Cuffs

The pockets are similarly streamlined. These ski pants offer two big zippered thigh pockets (plenty big for a phone) and one zippered hip pocket that can accommodate an avalanche beacon.

The pants’ cuffs default to a ski boot-accommodating flare that can be buttoned in for a slightly slimmer fit. It’s a distinction that lands it more in the freeride side of the pants spectrum. Those searching for more of a mountaineering pant that won’t snag on crampons should look elsewhere for pant cuffs that default to narrow but zip open to accommodate ski boots. Norrona’s own Lyngen Flex1 Light pants are a great example.

The pant cuffs deviate from the softshell theme with hardshell reinforced ankles. The design both defends against ski edge slices and upward creeping wetness from the snow. They’re burly enough that they’re still in great shape after the test period despite a repeated thrashing from my skis’ edges and a painfully complicated early-season bushwhack.

Breathability

As I trudged uphill fully covered in the Lofoten softshell kit, I wasn’t disappointed. And that’s saying something because I’m an exceptionally warm person. Usually, I have no problem sweating through layers. And believe me, I found the limit of the Lofoten’s breathability. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by how long it took to overheat. The fabric breathes well.

Once I started to get warm, I zipped open the generous underarm vents and the long mesh-backed thigh vents to extend the range. But the fabric is still burly. It doesn’t breathe anything like a sun hoody, microgrid fleece, or ultralight windbreaker.

That said, the Flex1 fabric felt distinctly more breathable than your typical three-layer hardshell fabric on the uphills. The hot, wet air close to my body was able to escape instead of turning my pits, back, and legs into a swamp. It kept me feeling dry, day after day, whether I was ski touring or resort skiing. That’s not typically the case when I’m clad head to toe in even the most breathable hardshell fabrics.

Flex1 Fabric Waterproofing

Norrøna’s proprietary Flex1 softshell fabric is a blend of polyester, nylon, and elastane. It aims to strike a balance between breathability, protection, and stretch. The fabric’s DWR-treated exterior is burly to the touch. The interior is brushed, so it feels slightly softer against the skin.

The flip side of breathability is protection. I quickly noticed on a chilly, early-season resort day that icy cold air can penetrate the soft-shell fabric. As that chilly wind deteriorated into a full-blown snowstorm, I weathered the blizzard draped in the Lofoten Flex1 kit. It did a fantastic job at deflecting cold, dry snow.

But as the snowflakes thickened, plump with liquid, the Flex1 fabric proved penetrable. It’s not waterproof like GORE-TEX. My thighs and chest got damp after a while while riding the chairlift.

That’s not particularly surprising. The protection versus breathability conundrum is one that all product designers face when using a softshell fabric. The Lofoten’s Flex1 fabric falls on the protective side of the softshell spectrum, even if it can eventually succumb to saturation.

But Norrøna’s designers got ahead of it. Both the pants and jacket feature waterproof panels in the knees, seat, and shoulders. Those zones stayed mostly dry. But more importantly, I was able to poke around in snow pits, kneel, and sit on my skis for a snack without soaking my outerwear.

One of the most overlooked benefits of softshells for skiing is stretch. The Flex1 fabric is very stretchy, which vastly improves the kit’s mobility compared to its hardshell competitors. I enjoyed the stretch most acutely on the skin track, where tiny constrictions can add up after thousands of strides.

Thankfully, the Lofoten Flex1 Pants not only articulated well but also stretched at the extremes of each stride, rather than constricting the movement.

I was impressed with the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants’ versatility in the front country and backcountry after weeks of testing. In all honesty, I had originally pegged the softshell kit as a backcountry specialist that wouldn’t venture with me inbounds very often.

But other than protection in serious wet blizzard conditions, the Flex1 kit actually made a lot of sense for inbounds skiing in most conditions. For one, the softshell material is distinctly thicker, and therefore slightly more insulating, than a thin hardshell. I swapped between light wool baselayers and none at all.

As mentioned, it’s also stretchy. That mobility makes a big difference for dynamic skiers who lean deeply into turns and ski fast and loose in moguls. The cut lends itself to basically any layering architecture that the temperatures could demand. The optional bib adds a layer of protection on par with my go-to resort bibs. It’s basically impossible for snow to get in my pants when that thing is zipped in.

The Lofoten Flex1 kit simultaneously has the breathability and mobility that I’m looking for in the backcountry. So sidecountry and hike-to resort terrain, logically, is covered too. It’s an outerwear kit that has more bases covered than you might expect from softshell.

Room for Improvement: Powder Skirt

Unlike many ski jackets (including the Lofoten GORE-TEX Jacket), this ski jacket includes a fixed “Snap-away” powder skirt. It snaps to the matching pants’ belt loops to create an ultra-protective barrier from the light and fluffy. It works as advertised.

But I’m decidedly anti-powder skirt. For one, they’re annoying at baseline, and I find that they ride higher than I’d want them. Also, they’re superfluous when you’re wearing bibs like the Flex1 Pants’ zip-in bib. And staying warm in the backcountry is inevitably about the layer shuffle. You’re constantly adjusting layers to achieve the ideal temperature balance. Buttoning and unbuttoning the powder skirt is cumbersome.

That’s a long way of saying that I wish the powder skirt were removable like with most other jackets. But it’s far from a dealbreaker. I simply cut it out with a pair of scissors and never looked back.

Norrona Lofoten Flex1 Jacket & Pants: Conclusion

Norrøna’s gift to the softshell connoisseurs, the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants, were exceptionally capable in the mixed weather and skiing conditions that I encountered during the test period.

But here’s the thing: The softshell material isn’t all that different from other top midweight softshells on the market. That’s not a bad thing. It has a super-durable exterior that fends off dry snow and very light precipitation. A brushed interior is soft against the skin and adds just a tiny bit of warmth compared to a hardshell. Most importantly, it’s adequately breathable without absolutely surrendering to frigid wind gusts.

What sticks out about the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants is the attention to fit and mobility. I loved the long, slim cut, the attention to movement-oriented gusseting, and the protective features sprinkled throughout. The attachable bib was a huge bonus. The pockets and details were dialed for ski touring.

The Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants are a stellar companion on all but the wettest days in-bounds or outside the resort gates with the right layering strategy. Skiers that don’t venture into the backcountry, and therefore don’t need the extra breathability, would enjoy slightly more protection from the GORE-TEX version of the Lofoten or my personal favorite resort-oriented hardshell, the Tamok.

Still, backcountry skiers or those hiking to extreme terrain or sidecountry gates looking specifically for a freeride-oriented softshell kit could hardly do better than the Lofoten Flex1 Jacket and Pants. The people asked, and Norrøna delivered.

The Flylow Chemical Pants ($380) are among my favorite pairs of pants out of dozens I’ve worn over the last two years of ski testing. That’s because they are tough, protective, and yet not overly warm. They have just enough pocket space for my keys, phone, and wallet. And with a relatively neutral appearance, they work well with many different jacket styles.

Just be sure to size up a little if you’re in between sizes.

I tested the Chemical Pants over several ski days at Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort, Copper Mountain, and in the Colorado backcountry during the spring of 2025. The Chemical Pants essentially disappeared into my day, which is high praise for any ski apparel.

The FlyLow Chemical Pants’ weather resistance is top-tier. They protected well against hard, icy snow when I took a surprising fall while skiing Palavinci at Arapaho Basin, letting me slide over hard-packed snow without any moisture or snow intrusion.

As I noted, the Chemical Pants run a little bit small. I fell between sizes as I have a 30-inch waist, and the size small that Flylow recommended was a little snug in the waist. I think the next size up would have been better, as I could have added a belt if I needed to snug it down. As they are, well, they’re snug, but still fantastic. Please keep this in mind if you’re ordering these online.

The Chemical Pants have two nice pockets on the front, providing ample space to keep keys on a lanyard loop, a phone, and a wallet. There’s also a back pocket, but I almost never use it as you would sit on anything inside it while riding the lift. I wish the Chemical Pants had a thigh pocket, as it gives you a lot more space for a large phone or other items. But the pockets, while minimal, are sufficient for a day on the slopes.

These have two large vent zips that work great. I like that they’re on the outside of the pants, so you get lots of venting when you need it, and they’re easy to close when you don’t.

Finally, the Chemical Pants have burly reinforcements on the knees and cuffs. The cuffs also have a snap adjustment and a snow gaiter. They do not have a hook on the gaiter, but I never found much snow intrusion, so it seems unnecessary.

Overall, these are excellent pants. Just make sure to size up, and you’ll have stylish, comfortable pants that will last at a very reasonable price.

Stellar is a Scandinavian brand new to the U.S. It caught my eye last winter when I saw it at the Outdoor Media Alliance (OMA) trade show. The Stellar kit is the brand’s most popular skiwear line, and the Stellar Equipment Stellar Shell Pants 2.0 ($580) stood out to me for its simple, functional design. 

These aren’t flashy pants with bells and whistles. They’re just well-made and thoughtfully designed with quality materials. It’s a straightforward design.

The Stellar Shell 2.0 Ski Pants ($580) are crafted from recycled nylon fabric, sourced in Japan. It’s a little stiff, but it has proven very durable and reliably water- and windproof so far. These pants have a more relaxed fit than many European ski pants, which allows for better freedom of movement and contributes to a more “steazy” look. 

In the Stellar 2.0 Pants, Stellar also added an elastic adjustable waist to help better dial the fit. There’s a comfortable, fleecy band around the inside of the waist, and belt loops on the outside, allowing you to use your own belt (which always earns design points in my book). 

The Stellar 2.0 Pants have four pockets — one on each hip and one on each thigh. All of the pockets drop internally (none of them gusset outward), which better protects the items you’re storing, but can make the pant legs feel tight if you’re carrying large or bulky items. Both legs have a vent on the outside, and all the zippers are water-resistant YKK AquaGuard (except for the fly zipper, which is protected by a 3L flap). 

Overall, these pants are durable, functional, and straightforward. The materials are bomber and the construction is strong. In testing, I thought they cut the wind effectively, and breathed as well as any other 3L shell pants I own. They’re relatively lightweight, weighing just 705 g (in a men’s large), and moved easily with me during both downhill and uphill travel. I think I prefer them for resort use, but they also work well for backcountry skiing. 

The only downside? Even though they’re made with recycled materials, these pants contain PFAS chemicals. That may be a deal breaker for some.

Ortovox is best known for its backcountry packs and avalanche equipment, but it’s also coming out of the gate strong with ski outerwear. As I tested them this winter, the Ortovox Ravine Plus Pants ($630) really drove that home for me. They’re stylish, comfortable, and different in some enticing ways.

My favorite feature of the Ravine Plus Pants was, hands down, its waist design. Unlike standard ski pants, this pair has a higher waist with elastic woven into it and large, 5-inch panels of Velcro that make micro-adjustments really easy. The way this pair of ski pants hugs your abdomen feels so snug that I don’t even mind the lack of belt loops. Two snap buttons secure the waist in place up front. 

While Ortovox bills these as shells, they actually have a thin layer of merino lining the inside. It adds enough insulated warmth that these pants feel a lot toastier than standard shells. I’d warm up pretty quickly in them if I were backcountry skiing uphill or ski touring. For resorts, though, it was perfect. Even on the coldest days when I wore these, I never felt the need to layer up underneath them. However, they were also not too hot for warmer days.

Comfort-wise, these pants scored high. The merino lining makes them slightly heavier, but also makes them buttery smooth to move around in. The fit is also quite relaxed, so there is no restriction on movement. 

The Ravine Plus kit is also the first outerwear to use Ortovox’s proprietary non-porous waterproof membrane, OVX.SHEILD. It’s environmentally friendly and free of PFAS and PFCs. 

Typically, I prefer ski bibs to pants. But the way these fit around my waist, the comfort they offered, and the range of movement I had in them really won me over. This is one pair of pants I would take over bib shells for almost any resort day. 

I only wish that I’d had a different color to test. The “white tea” colorway I have looks great, but it’s proven hard to keep clean. Luckily, Ortovox offers the Ravine Plus pants in two other colors for both men and women.

On January 2, 2025, The North Face Men’s Summit Series Verbier GORE-TEX Bibs protected me during one of the best powder days of my life. Would I have chosen any other pants for that day? No way.

The Verbier Bibs are downright fantastic, albeit very expensive, ski bibs. They have top-tier, 100% recycled GORE-TEX 3-Layer fabric. It’s the gold standard in waterproof-breathable construction, and these bibs prove why. During the aforementioned powder day, the Verbier Bibs provided snowproof protection while skiing bell-to-bell at an uncrowded, waist-deep float fest at Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort.

However, throughout the winter, I tested the bibs on a dozen more outings, from backcountry touring in below-zero conditions to spring riding on slush.

The verdict? The Verbier Bibs are among the absolute best you can buy — if they fit. They have an athletic fit that will suit slender to medium builds well. Those with heavier physiques may find them too snug, so it’s best to try them on before making a purchase.

The GORE-TEX construction of these bibs is great. Moreover, they have excellent pocket placement, with two hand pockets and two thigh pockets fit for everything needed for a day on the slopes. A chest kangaroo pocket adds utility, although it seems a little more than needed.

Entry is easy with a one-sided zip, which also allows for bathroom breaks without fully removing the bibs. A small fly zip allows for Number 1 with a quick dash into the trees.

A downside for those who run hot, the Verbier Bibs lack side zips, limiting ventilation. It’s worth considering for those who plan to undertake extensive touring in warmer conditions. Other than that, these bibs are nearly perfect.

Read Review: Freeride Meets Alpinism: Mountain Hardwear Mythogen Ski Kit First Look Review

The Mountain Hardwear Mythogen Bibs ($700) are one of the more technical pieces Mountain Hardwear has released in a while. The brand aimed to create a comprehensive mountaineering ski kit for big mountain, high alpine, and technical use. With design help from legendary French skier Vivian Bruchez, Mountain Hardwear took a big swing with the Mythogen — and in my opinion, it nailed its mark.

Made from recycled GORE-TEX EPe Pro, these bibs are very durable and have a nice weight, neither too heavy nor too stiff. They’re water and windproof, PFAS-free, and offer protection from the elements, with stretch where you need it. From the waist down, the bibs are GORE-TEX, but from the waist up, its a stretchy nylon material that breathes well and allows for freedom of movement.

The main zipper extends from the top of the bibs to the fly, which is protected by a 3L GORE-TEX flap (dual zippers allow for fly access from the bottom, so you don’t have to unzip from the top). All of the zippers, except for those on the chest pockets, are water-resistant.

These bibs are also stacked with pockets. They have two pockets on each thigh and two more on the chest for a total of six. I found that stashing snacks, a beacon, ski straps, tools, liners, or maps in these bibs was not an issue. The thigh pockets are gusseted to fit larger, bulkier items.

Drop seats don’t normally excite me, but the Mythogen’s is interesting. It has a large arcing “rainbow” design with dual zippers that open up and drop the entire backside down. The dual zippers also double as vents, allowing me to dump heat on the move or lower my seat to take care of business. It’s a different design than I’ve seen on other bibs, and I like it.

Finally, the cuffs of these bibs deserve a call-out, too. The cuffs have an elastic cinch at the bottom, similar to many softshell pants. Uncinched, they can easily fit over a ski boot, and cinched, they hold tightly around a mountaineering boot. It’s the best of both worlds for ski mountaineers.

When GearJunkie tester Bergen Tjossem reviewed this kit after using it in Chamonix, France, he concluded, “The snug-fitting cuffs are a meaningful detail in the jagged peaks of Chamonix, where a snagged crampon point could send you off a 2,000-foot cliff.”

The Mountain Hardwear Mythogen Bibs have a freeride fit, which means they are slightly baggier. That makes layering under them easy. However, if you’re between sizes, I recommend trying these on before purchasing, as you may want to size down.

The first thing I noticed when I slipped into the Helly Hansen Ridge Infinity Shell Bibs 2.0 ($620) was their weight. They’re lightweight, made with Helly Hansen’s three-layer LIFA INFINITY membrane. In testing so far, it appears to be quite durable, but initially, I was skeptical that it could withstand sustained backcountry abuse. 

Those fears quickly subsided as I used these bibs more. They’re ideal for backcountry skiers who want a light hardshell that can take a beating. 

With just two thigh pockets (one on each leg) and one large chest pocket, these bibs might seem to have less storage space than others on this list. But the two thigh pockets are gusseted and can fit a lot of loose odds and ends. The chest pocket is voluminous and gusseted and has one vertical access zipper on each side. During testing, I never encountered any issues with a lack of space for my snacks, phone, beacon, and ski tools. 

The zippers on both sides of the chest pocket have large pull tabs that are very easy to grab with gloves on. One of the two thigh pockets has this same closure. The other, however, closes with Velcro. I’ve never had any issues with that pocket opening or losing items from it while I’m skiing, but I wish it had a zipper closure as well. That’s my only real gripe with these pants, and its pretty minor.

Given the material Helly Hansen used, the kick guard feels almost overbuilt. It is by far the heaviest part of the Ridge Infinity Bibs, probably to compensate for the lightness of the LIFA INFINITY membrane. In several weeks of testing, I didn’t slice or even scrape the kick guard material. 

The straps are one of my favorite parts of the Ridge Infinity Bibs. They’re 1.5 inches wide, which makes them less likely to unintentionally twist or fold over when worn. Unlike some bibs, getting into these and adjusting the shoulder straps is easy and doesn’t require a mirror.

I’d recommend these bibs for any backcountry skier, as well as for resort skiers who occasionally venture into sidecountry and backcountry areas. They’re light enough for easy uphill travel, durable, reinforced where it matters, and have enough pocket space to hold everything you need on the skin track. However, this kit (including the jacket) is size large. I got a men’s large (which is what I normally wear), but I could have gone with a medium instead.

The Flylow Men’s Chemical Snow Pants ($380) feel burly. From steep trees to groomers and park laps, these durable pants were leg armor that protected us through dense glades. They have all the top design garnishes and look good, too, which pushes these pants to the top of our list.

These pants are thoroughly waterproof with sealed seams, waterproof zippers, and Flylow’s proprietary intuitive fabric membrane. Rated at 20,000mm, Colorado-based tester Bergen Tjossem found the fabric package thoroughly waterproof even in wet, snowy conditions. The brand upgraded the Chemical pants with a PFAS-Free DWR that beads water and lasts for multiple seasons, but is free of toxic chemicals. These pants button to a Flylow jacket’s powder skirt for extra weather resistance. 

Heavy-duty patches with a tightly woven canvas texture reinforce the articulated knees, while burly 1000-denier fabric fortifies the cuffs near the ground — those hems aren’t going anywhere!

These Chemical Pants employ two big unbacked vents on each leg, which create a crossbreeze through each leg. Between the airflow and the breathable fabric, these ski pants were serviceable on the skin track despite the tenacious exterior and relatively heavy weight. However, they aren’t a top pick for backcountry touring. 

Due to the denser fabric, weight, and loose fit, these pants perform at its best within the boundaries of the ski resort (even though there’s a beacon attachment in a pocket). Other notable details of the Chemical Snow Pants include three pockets, belt loops, and elasticated gaiters. The pants’ legs easily slide over our ski or snowboard boots. We’re also super impressed with the vast size range of this pant, which includes short and tall inseam options, and XS through XXL — the ergonomic regular fit straddles straight and baggy, which most folks will get along with just fine. 

Our team agrees: Flylow’s Chemical pants are well-suited to lift service skiing, hike-to terrain, and lift-accessed side country. All that and they land with a very competitive $365 price tag. It would be silly not to recommend Flylow’s Chemical Pants to any skier looking for a solid pair of ski pants that are well designed, thoroughly durable, and honestly priced. But if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper option with a simpler fit and construction, check out the straight-legged Eddie Bauer Men’s Chair Six Shell Pants.

Skiing can get expensive fast. The North Face’s Freedom Pants ($170) aren’t. Skier Bergen Tjossem was impressed by the value these ski pants offer, as well as the critical design details and protection from the elements, to get entry-level skiers and riders out on the snow in comfort and style. 

This fabric and DWR combo provided plentiful protection from the elements. The Freedom’s main fabric is a 160D X 140D DryVent 2L recycled Nylon fabric that proved plentifully waterproof for day-to-day resort skiing. We appreciated its non-PFC durable water repellent finish, which improved the protection. And while not technically insulated, the fabric proved warmer than other shell pants.

These regular-fitting Freedom Pants are accommodating and come in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL in short, regular, and long inseam lengths. We had no problem finding the right size and appreciated the inclusive sizing that should work for most skiers. Waist adjustment relies on Velcro tabs and a single front button that can easily open during big compressions or a big plate of nachos. Fortunately, The North Face added belt loops to the Freedom pants, which one of our testers strongly preferred over just about any integrated belt on the market. 

Despite adequate venting and articulation for resort skiing and riding, the Freedom Pants were not breathable enough for purely human-powered backcountry skiing. They also didn’t move and articulate as well as pricier options that incorporate strategic gusseting. These are pants designed to thrive where the lifts are spinning.

Freedom Pants have a solid construction, but unlike Flylow’s Chemical Pants, they aren’t built to last a decade or more. We experienced a few seams unravelling and the occasional fabric tear from everyday use, which is not unheard of at this price point. Fortunately, the main fabric is burly, and seam issues were easy to mend.

Adding to the value proposition, The North Face used recycled Nylon for the main fabric and recycled Polyester for the lining. Recycled fabrics are typically only found in more expensive garments. The Freedom will fit the bill for recreational skiers and riders needing a pair of pants to get in the game at an affordable price point. They have what you need, like good waterproofing, and nothing you don’t. And it’s hard to argue with a pair of pants that are hundreds of dollars cheaper than nearly every other option.

For skiers looking for insulated pants, The North Face Men’s Freedom Insulated Pants ($200) offer great durability and performance for significantly less money than major competitors. And The North Face Women’s Freedom Insulated Pants are equally a crowd-pleaser. Designed primarily for the ski resort, these pants are well-constructed and stylish. While we’ve listed the insulated version of the Freedom Pants here, a non-insulated version is available and slightly cheaper. Regardless of the print, the fabric is 100% recycled nylon with a non-PFC DWR finish for protection on stormy days.

Though we haven’t included many insulated pants on this list, we found the 60 g Heatseeker insulation in the Freedom Pants adds a nice touch. We tend to appreciate insulated pants in the teens and during windchill, which feel pleasant and cozy without excess bulk. Plus, the 60 grams of Heatseeker Eco insulation is made from 90% post-consumer recycled polyester, while the liner is 100% recycled polyester.

The slightly baggy fit of the Freedom Pants allows for comfortable layering, and the resulting style fits right in at the resort. Because these pants lack stretch, they do feel mildly restrictive at times, meaning they aren’t ideal for backcountry skiing. We like the large side vents, which successfully counteract the warmth of the insulation on balmy days. We’re also happy to see the wide range of sizes that include a short, regular, and long inseam option. And it’s nice to have an extra cargo pocket to round out the two traditional hand pockets.

While the Freedom Insulated Pants won’t win any awards for high-end features or cutting-edge technology, they are fully deserving of a shout-out for their unbeatable value. For a non-insulated pant in this price rung, check out the Eddie Bauer Men’s Chair Six Shell Pants.

The Patagonia Men’s Storm Shift Pants ($399) are highly sustainable and will see you through any conditions you might encounter throughout the ski season, ease included. The Storm Shift is a continuation of Patagonia’s 2-layer outerwear without perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), and it’s made with 100% recycled material. Called the ePE GORE-TEX membrane (which Patagonia also unveiled in 3-layer kits in 2023/2024), we found that the textile does not sacrifice waterproofing or performance despite the chemical-free makeover.

While these pants are not insulated, they incorporate a comfortable mesh liner that we found added a lot of warmth when compared to other 2-layer shell pants. With long, mesh-backed thigh vents, you can also quickly regulate temperature if you get too hot. For a 2-layer material, we found these pants sealed out moisture even in the wettest of conditions.

We found that the Storm Shift Pants ran quite large, to the point of feeling baggy. That’s perfect if you appreciate a loose fit. But if not, you’ll likely want to size down or wear a belt. Otherwise, the Eddie Bauer Men’s Chair Six Shell Pants offer a straighter fit. The adjustable waistband of the Storm can help dial in the snug level, and a bit of stretch will keep you comfortable no matter which end of the size spectrum you select. 

These ski pants have a high level of durability, especially with the integrated Cordura kick patch that surrounds the entire hem and reaches high on the interior lower leg. No ski edges are getting through that shield. These pants are a heavy-duty choice that will last you many seasons without showing signs of wear. However, we wouldn’t use these pants for uphill pursuits considering the added warmth we felt from the liner. The Storm Shift Pants are a reliable, eco-friendly option with a relaxed fit best suited for trips to the ski area.

Blurring the lines, the Black Diamond Recon LT Pants ($350) work well between backcountry and resort days, hardshell and softshell. The main fabric, Black Diamond’s proprietary BD.dry 3L, stuck out to us while ski touring in Colorado. It’s plentifully waterproof like a hardshell for dumping snow and booting up couloirs but breathable enough for high-output touring like a softshell. And the Black Diamond Women’s Recon also demonstrated versatility across varying conditions from wet chairlift seats to sweaty skin tracks.

But what sets the Recon LT apart from other waterproof options is the generous 4-way stretch throughout. It was so accommodating in terms of movement that it had us questioning whether stretchless waterproof fabrics — like those found in most high-end garments — should be relegated to the past. Why choose stretch versus waterproofing when Black Diamond proves we can have both? Perhaps durability is at play.

The Recon LT comes equipped with tour-specific features like a sturdy integrated avalanche beacon pouch, plentiful pocket volume, and generous heat-dumping thigh vents. They also sport best-in-class inner boot gaiters that seal out the elements even after hours of wallowing in deep snow.

Most impressive about these touring-specific pants was how well they transitioned to downhill skiing at the resort. They’re light and breathable but simultaneously strong and protective when worn as a shell over base layers. Testers Jessi Hackett and Bergen Tjossem didn’t hesitate to bring these pants out in treacherous wind, driving storms, sunshine, or any other conditions when paired with the right base layers.

The catch? We found the integrated belt and hook-and-loop waist adjusters woefully insufficient to hold the pants up while touring. Users who do find a good fit, however, will be psyched on the Recon LT Pants. They’re stretchy, breathable, and protective shells for backcountry and resort skiing alike at a price point below most high-end waterproof competitors.

There’s a reason so many backcountry skiers, climbers, and mountaineers have trusted Outdoor Research’s Cirque pants for years on end. For those diehards, we’ve got great news: The new Outdoor Research Cirque III Softshell Pants ($179) are the best ones yet – they’re durable, breathable, movement-oriented, and exceptionally versatile. Ladies, you can scope out the women’s Cirque III, too.

The Cirque III was designed with the “simpler is better” ethos, and that’s why it transcends seasons and disciplines. Unlike most softshell pants designed for ski touring, the Cirque III defaults to a narrow lower cuff that’s suitable for mountaineering boots, trail runners, or hiking boots. Then the cuffs zip open, revealing a burly gusset to accommodate even the beefiest ski touring boots.

These ski pants strike a nice balance between breathability and durability. While not the most water-resistant, the main fabric feels tough, and the pants are reinforced in all the high-wear zones. The kevlar reinforced cuffs refused to succumb to any of the ski edges, crampon points, tree branches, or sharp rocks thrown their way. But despite the robust build, the fabric felt breathable enough for highly aerobic winter activities, even without vents. 

Outdoor Research took great care to maximize versatility, which all starts with movement and fit. Compared to previous versions, the trimmer cut, generous gussets, and restriction-free stretch impressed our tester, Bergen Tjossem, during backcountry ski missions, high-stepping on rock and ice climbing pitches, and while winter hiking alike. On one test day, Tjossem had a 3-hour pre-dawn approach, 2,000 vertical feet of crampon booting to 13,000 feet, technical rope work, and a tricky descent in brutally cold, windy storm conditions. He found these pants to be perfect for the job.

While deep in the mountains, we appreciated the little details, too. A low-profile avalanche beacon pocket kept our beepers secure and accessible. Gaiter hooks and cord eyelets added protection while trudging through powder. The pocket layout provided enough storage options while remaining low profile under a harness. Most importantly, the integrated belt has a plentiful range and strength to hold the pants up even when weighted down by a pocketed beacon, multitool, and snacks.

Outdoor Research did their, um, research: The third generation of the Cirque pants are a durable workhorse of a softshell suited to ski touring, climbing, hiking, and mountaineering throughout the year. The Cirque also runs laps around its competition in terms of inclusive sizing: They’re offered in 16 different sizes, so most users will find a dialed fit for their body type.

Rising to the top of our apparel quiver, the Rab Men’s Khroma Diffuse GORE-TEX Pants ($450) is a dependable, straightforward choice for exploratory resort days — through trees, chutes, moguls, and boulder drops — and an equally rad partner for backcountry adventures. The design remains unchanged, which debuted alongside the Rab Women’s Khroma Diffuse. We love these pants for their superior construction with articulated knees and roomy upper legs for full-on days. Sweeping turns and climbing skin tracks are no issue with such well-tailored, dependable, well-constructed ski pants to rip around in.

Though a similar aesthetic and design to the Khroma lineup, these particular 3-layer pants boast a 100% recycled face fabric. Compared to the Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants, this pair is more waterproof — 28,000mm versus 20,000mm — and, as a result, slightly heavier (657 grams compared to 579 grams) and more durable, though some breathability is sacrificed. The material is coated with Gore DWR rather than a fluorocarbon-free DWR. With a slightly higher-end build, the price tag lands a bit higher, too. The back pocket was nixed from this design, as well.

Day in and out, the material kept moisture at bay, even while skiing laps in blizzard conditions and catching puddles on lift chairs. Rather than a metal hook, the internal gaiters have a soft pull-tab but the interior elastic band is grippy and stays put. The lower legs zip open, from the hem up, with a 9.5-inch long window to access your ski boots. Having the option of belt loops plus an exterior integrated velcro belt is one we appreciate.

The hems are reinforced on the interior and exterior, and that secondary material reaches 8 inches up the interior leg. There are also two dense crampon patches — 5.5 x 8 inches and 4.5 x 8 inches — on either side of the lower-leg zipper. Those lower legs are well-shielded against sharp ski edges and crampons, though they’re not easy to roll up if that’s ever a desire — like when you’re hiking back to the trailhead on a muddy road after a spring mission. We also appreciate the side leg vents for when we’re bootpacking or on the uphill approach.

Two hand pockets plus a spacious lower-thigh pocket, which fits a beacon, get the job done. Inside the lowermost pocket is a small interior, stretchy pocket. We’re on the fence about these nooks — they’re typically too small for a beacon or a phone — but they could be a spot to slide a lean belonging like a driver’s license or ID. While the three exterior leg pockets are roomy, they’re certainly not sized for skins. However, the only real critique we have of the pants so far is that RECCO could be a nice addition. If you need a strong build that won’t wear out soon, don’t hesitate to invest in the Khroma Diffuse for out-of-bounds adventures, hut trips, and ski mountaineering adventures.

Rather than relying on flashy features or excessive garnish, these ski pants focus on solid construction and thoughtful design. The result is a simple, no-nonsense piece of outerwear crafted from high-quality materials. Introducing the Stellar Shell 2.0 Ski Pants ($479). Built from recycled nylon fabric sourced in Japan, this Scandinavian brand first caught our attention last winter at the Outdoor Media Alliance (OMA) trade show. 

This season, Editor Will Brendza finally got to take a spin with a pair. While skiing in Colorado, he found that the Stellar 2.0 felt slightly stiff at first. But throughout the season, they have proven to be impressively durable and consistently wind- and waterproof. Compared to many European ski pants, the fit is more relaxed, which improves freedom of movement and lends the pants a more “steazy” look.

The fit adjustment is achieved through an elastic, adjustable waist in the Stellar 2.0 Pants. Inside the waistband, a soft fleecy band adds comfort, while exterior belt loops allow riders to use its own belt — a detail that earns design points in our book.

Storage is handled by four pockets, located on each hip and thigh. All pockets drop internally rather than gusseting outward, which helps protect contents but can make the legs feel snug when carrying larger or bulkier items. Venting is provided on the outside of both legs, and nearly all zippers are water-resistant YKK AquaGuard, with the exception of the fly zipper, which is shielded by a 3L flap.

The primary drawback? Despite the use of recycled materials, the pants contain PFAS chemicals — a factor that may be a deal breaker for some.

New to the U.S., Stellar’s ski pants stood out thanks to its clean, functional aesthetic. Across testing, the pants proved durable, functional, and refreshingly straightforward. The materials feel bomber, and the overall construction is strong. We found that they cut the wind effectively and breathed as well as any other 3-layer shell pants we own. Weighing 705 g in a men’s large, they’re relatively lightweight and move easily with us during both uphill and downhill travel. While Brendza preferred them for resort skiing, they also perform well in the backcountry.

The Stio Men’s Environ Pant ($429) and Women’s Environ stand out for their excellent fit, range of motion, and streamlined, high-quality details. Our team agrees — the Environs are a downright comfortable pair of ski pants that move and articulate seamlessly through any day at the ski resort. Senior Editor Morgan Tilton found no hangups while snowboarding and practicing jumps at Woodward Copper. 

These Environ pants utilize a light but tough 3-layer recycled waterproof and breathable fabric. From outside to inside, the layers are a 150D recycled polyester face fabric, a waterproof membrane rated at 20,000mm, and a 20D tricot backer that is easy on the skin. 

We found the Environ Pants plentifully water and windproof for any day at a typical ski resort, even during a dumping snowstorm. Our legs felt protected even on gusty ridgelines and frigid chairlift rides. Being uninsulated, base layers were critical when conditions were chilly.

The three-layer fabric sandwich only has a breathability rating of 10,000g/m2/24hrs, less than half of what high-end GORE-TEX fabrics offer, like those found in the Arc’teryx Sabre Pants. The Environs got clammy fairly easily in the backcountry, especially for ski tester Bergen Tjossem, who runs particularly warm on the skin track. Big thigh vents helped mitigate the issue by dumping heat with a quick zip. 

The relatively low breathability wasn’t an issue at the ski resort, where the vents and periodic lift rides kept the swamp at bay. Even aerobic bootpacks to powder stashes didn’t overwhelm the Environs’ breathing capabilities. 

The Environ Pants offer a simple integrated belt with a big hook that’s easily removable, leaving tried-and-true belt loops — a basic and elegant solution to pants security. The Environ’s other elements are equally as streamlined. The pocket layout offers just enough easily accessible storage in the right places. The burly exterior cuffs and stretchy interior cuffs do precisely what they need to do — keep the snow out and guard against ski edge slices. 

While not the best option for pure backcountry users, skiers looking for a simple pair of ski pants that shun frivolous elements in favor of fit, quality, and good articulation will be psyched on Stio’s Environ Pants, offered in both Men’s and Women’s options.

We’re impressed by the Eddie Bauer Men’s Chair Six Shell Pants ($229) for versatility and price. These 3-layer pants offer protection from the elements while remaining very flexible without any fabric swoosh. While these are built for the resort, we found that they’re usable in the backcountry, too. The soft-feeling fabric is treated with a Storm Repel DWR, every seam is taped, and the ankles and cuffs are reinforced with Cordura for durability. The longevity of the waterproof barrier remains to be tested, but initially, we were impressed.

For uphill travel, a double zipper allows the pant’s vent to open on the inside of each leg or open in a U-shape from one leg to the other. A nylon mesh guard prevents the pants from opening too far and snow from entering. We were impressed by the amount of cooling offered by this design. While touring in warmer conditions, secondary vents on the exterior legs would be preferable but, for most conditions, this vent provided enough airflow. 

The hand pockets are fleece-lined and zippered, creating comfort and security for our important items. An additional thigh pocket is secured by Velcro for larger items, and there’s a zippered rear pocket as well. The straight fit offered a lot of room for layers, and the stretch allowed us to move freely without feeling like we were wearing a sailboat. 

Speaking of layers, Eddie Bauer also offers the Men’s Chair Six Insulated Hybrid Pant ($119), a midlayer designed to round out the whole kit. This fleece-lined midlayer kept us warm on the chairlift. It contains 60 g of synthetic insulation, which is strategically body-mapped and placed from the knees up. The pants are stylish enough to be worn for après-ski and stretchy enough to pull up the lower calf area to accommodate ski boots. If you want an inherently insulated ski pant in this price range, check out the The North Face Insulated Freedom Pants.

Overhauled with a new fabric, the legacy Arc’teryx Sabre Pants ($600) have a lighter environmental footprint. Absent insulation, we found this 3-layer snow pant worked well for long backcountry days and could also hang on stormy days at the resort. With the right layering underneath, this design had tester Bergen Tjossem covered across Colorado’s wild range of weather and snow conditions.

The Sabre Pants employ the new top-of-the-line ePE fabric from GORE-TEX, an 80-denier textile with recycled nylon. The mega update is the ePE (expanded Polyethylene) material, which has the same breathable microporous membrane as the GORE-TEX of yore. The main difference is that the design is leaner and eliminates toxic, environmentally harmful PFC chemicals. In testing, we found that the fabric remains exceptionally waterproof, as you’d expect from GORE-TEX. As storms blasted, we were impressed with how well the Sabre ski pants repelled water and snow.

Against your base layer sits a soft 80-denier ePE flannel backer that feels smooth on bare skin — it’s not warm, though. We found that base layers are required to dial in insulation for resort days. That said, the lightweight fabric transitioned nicely from the ski resort to the skin track thanks to the impressive breathability. They’re not as breathable as softshell pants, but they’re about as breathable as hardshells can get. Waterproof zippers open the massive thigh vents on each leg to dump heat on unrelenting uphills, too. 

Waist fastening is handled by an integrated but removable elastic belt with a simple plastic buckle joined at the front of the pants. We found that the belt did its one job admirably, even with a phone, avalanche beacon (a.k.a. transceiver), and snacks loaded inside the low-profile thigh pockets. Even still, Arc’teryx added belt loops for skiers that prefer to run their own belt: an appreciated feature with no tradeoffs.

Nicks? The Sabre pants are relatively tight in the hip, groin, and seat region. Despite matching the waist size (34”) in Arc’teryx’s sizing chart, one tester needed to size up from a Medium to a Large for more room and mobility. Sizing up significantly improved the fit in the lap, underside, and backside. However, the larger waistband (37”) required cinching from the integrated belt, which worked well.

The Sabre’s stout cuffs are wide enough for beefy ski boots and snowboard boots without being overly baggy and snag-prone. For longevity, Arc’teryx doubled down with a very durable 100-denier Cordura fabric. The Keprotec insteps were also impressively resistant to the sharp edges of our skis. After many days of thrashing, they’re barely rouged up and completely free of cuts. Underneath the shell are durable gaiters that stretch around the upper boot cuff to seal out snow. The premium Sabre ski pants have a price tag to match. But you get what you pay for: These pants can slash through powder until the sun goes down, stride uphill day after day, and protect your legs for the long haul through virtually any weather.

We enjoyed how cozy our legs felt on super snowy days at the resort while wearing the Mountain Hardwear Cloud Bank GORE-TEX Pants ($375). This design blurs the line between insulated and uninsulated pants. Made with a new toxic-free yet burly GORE-TEX ePE fabric, these pants are relatively economical for the technology. That textile is strong at 150-denier and comes in a 2-layer design. We found these pantalones blunted the icy wind and fended off hours of dense, wet snow, even on long chairlift rides.

That 20-denier nylon taffeta lining maximized the cozy factor. It doesn’t contain insulation, but it does trap warm air. In combination with merino wool base layers, we felt toasty warm, even with temperatures in the low teens. Despite being warm, the inner leg vents dumped heat quickly, meaning we could also ski swamp-free on warmer days. 

Not all skiers will fancy that the cut is on the baggier side, which accommodates more range of motion but also adds a swishy sound, thanks to the extra fabric. But we appreciated the extra room for insulating midlayers underneath. Between the cut and warmth, the Cloud Bank lands firmly in the resort category for ski pants. We wouldn’t recommend these for backcountry skiing. 

Other features that we appreciated were highly secure, protective inner gaiters, which were well placed. We liked the adequately roomy pockets that accommodated all of our snacks, and the integrated waist-tightening system functioned pretty well. Fortunately, Mountain Hardwear included belt loops for users who want even more security: One of our testers strongly preferred his own belt to keep the pants up.

Overall, the performance of this design falls somewhere in the middle of the pack and will suit most resort skiers really well. While the Cloud Bank is on the cheaper side of ski pants sporting this innovative waterproof GORE-TEX ePE membrane, there are still cheaper waterproof options that forgo GORE-TEX and match the broader quality like the 2-layer Picture Naikoon Pants.

The Rab Men’s Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants ($340) are well-made with a versatile mixture of handy features. While cruising through powder or skinning up steep slopes, you’ll surely appreciate the fine balance of breathability and waterproofing. There’s a ladies’ cut, too.

Surprisingly, Rab’s’ Proflex material is both fully waterproof and reasonably stretchy. Though these are hardshell pants, they manage to offer plentiful freedom of movement. Waterproof zippers keep your phone and valuables safe — even in waist-deep powder.

For such lightweight ski pants, the Kinetic Pants incorporate impressive durability in all the right places. For example, reinforcement patches around the ankles provide protection against ski edges and crampons. When paired with a good ski jacket, these pants form part of a full-body weatherproof system ideal for ski mountaineering.

We appreciate the sleek and understated look of these pants. All available color schemes are muted, handsome, and not overly flashy. Other key features of the Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants include elastic snow gaiters, side vents, and thoughtfully placed pockets. At a reasonable price, these pants are an exceptional value.

The 2-layer Picture Naikoon Pants ($275) are a stylish and comfortable insulated pant from French Alps outerwear company Picture, which features eco-friendly production and a relaxed, park-inspired fit. We love that these ski pants use 70% upcycled factory scraps and recycled textiles without any downgrades in performance. Called Circular polyester, Picture launched the technical in-house fabric blend in 80% of its winter outerwear in 2023-2024. With 20K/20K of breathability and waterproofness, the Naikoon is also loaded up with PFC-free DWR for extra water repellency.

We found that these pants have more of a bib inspiration in the front, with a high-rise waist to help seal out the elements. To ensure freedom of movement, the Naikoon has a bit of integrated stretch, making them extra cozy and non-restrictive. The Teflon EcoElite DWR finish is free of PFCs and completely bio-based, the first-ever textile repellent made from plants. The surface treatment repels water and water-based stains.

While the Coremax tricot lining might be too warm for high-output sunny days come spring, the Naikoon Pants feature long side zips to help regulate temperature. We found that the design was warm and suitable for all ski resort pursuits but would likely be overkill and too heavy for backcountry missions. We dig the two hand pockets along with two cargo pockets, providing plenty of spots to stash our stuff. And we like that the hems have a row of snaps to widen the pant leg and quickly pull these legs over our boots. We also love that there’s an elastic pull (inside the hand pockets) that can cinch the pant hem up, like drawing a curtain off the ground. Very cool.

Ultimately, we like the unique look of these pants with the oversized thigh pockets and colorblock print. Overall, the Naikoon Pants are a great choice for eco-conscious resort skiers who run cold or ski in colder climates. While The North Face Men’s Freedom Insulated Pants are also insulated and in this price vicinity, they have a different style and aesthetic compared to Picture, plus the Naikoon has four pockets instead of three.

Norrøna is known for high-quality outwear, and the Norrøna Lofoten GORE-TEX Pro Plus Pants ($999) are no exception — doubling down to deliver the most premium product we’ve selected. These durable, very waterproof, breathable, and thoroughly windproof ski pants are designed for mountain freeriding and backcountry adventures. GORE-TEX Pro is the company’s most substantial fabric with a waterproof rating of 28,000 mm: the top-tier for the Pacific Northwest or bell-to-bell snowstorms. When combined with Norrøna’s 200-denier outer fabric, the result is perhaps the most rugged pair of pants on this list.

There’s more. This moderately baggy pant is also adaptable because it includes a bib that can be zipped in to extend the fabric up the torso and help keep the pants snugged up. On both legs, large inner thigh vents offer amplified airflow. To avoid wear from ski edges and crampons, both ankle cuffs are fully reinforced with extremely strong Kevlar fabric. There’s also a phone pocket integrated inside the right thigh pocket. In total, there are two hand pockets and two thigh pockets, and we appreciate the storage.

GORE-TEX Pro, while excellent for keeping the weather out, can also feel a bit stifling when hiking uphill — after all, they’re the most waterproof pants on our list. Our other favorite backcountry ski pants, the Rab Men’s Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants, are a solid 20K of waterproofness in comparison. Ultimately, the Lofoten really shine in cold, windy, and stormy conditions.

Another great garnish is that these pants are made with more than 50% recycled synthetic fibers that are Oeko-Tex certified and Bluesign-approved, ensuring that harmful substances are not utilized in the construction and production process.

If your skiing style calls for ultimate weather protection, we highly recommend the lightweight and hybrid-style Lofoten GORE-TEX Pro Plus Pants (or bib). Even when the wind is whipping at 25 mph, your legs will feel sheltered all day long.

Our Testing Grounds

Tjossem tests gear primarily in Colorado’s backcountry but also on the resort’s ice climbing routes and deep days. He has clocked in nearly 150,000 feet of human-powered backcountry vert in 2023-2024, testing this season’s new gear and 25 days at the resort.

Despite the desert environment of Southern Utah, Kim regularly skis at Brian Head Resort and the surrounding backcountry near an elevation of 10,000 feet. Constantly changing conditions have Kim putting his outerwear through its paces, which demands top-tier protection and durability.

Tilton manages nearly two dozen gear testers nationwide and field tests between the desk shuffle. So far in 2025, she’s tested apparel for 165 hours across 44 days. In 2024, she tested apparel for 265 hours throughout 78 days of recreation from the ski area to the backcountry — excluding countless hours of shoveling. In 2023, she tested gear for 114 hours across 35 days.

The GearJunkie team meets for an annual on-snow test week to grind out turns and swap notes, including two previous gatherings at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, which is known for its expert terrain.

We consider fit, durability, waterproofing, breathability, and overall value when testing ski pants. In recent years, we’ve tested dozens of ski pants in just about every kind of snow and weather condition.

Our Ski Pants Rating System

We score each pair of ski pants on a 1–10 scale for Weather Protection, Fit and Mobility, Durability and Construction Quality, plus Breathability and Ventilation.

While considering weather protection, we take into account how the pants shield moisture and wind. Fit and mobility examines how effortlessly the pants move with us while going uphill, downhill, sitting, and bending over, as well as if there are any snag points. Durability and construction quality considers the overall material, stitching, hems, waistband, zippers, and pockets. The breathability and ventilation takes a look at how effectively the design releases moisture and heat during high-output activity, including the material and mechanical vents.

The Overall Rating is based on contextual, editorial judgment, and the complex user experience across various scenarios and conditions.

Buyers Guide: How to Choose Ski Pants

Ski pants come in a variety of styles. Some options prioritize burly weather resistance for resort-oriented skiing, while others are geared toward breathability, minimal weight, and restriction-free movement for ski touring.

Ski Pants vs. Ski Bibs

To ski in pants or a bib? This fundamental outerwear question divides the skiing world into two camps. Ski pants need little explanation, as they’re worn just like any other pair of pants — waist-high and secured with a button.

The primary downside of wearing pants while skiing is that cold and snow can find its way up the back of your jacket or down your pants, especially during a fall. Some of the best standard-style ski pants we’ve included are The North Face Insulated Freedom Ski Pants and the Flylow Chemical Pants.

Enter ski bibs. With a high waistline held up by shoulder suspension straps, bibs eliminate the fatal flaw of ski pants. When skiing deep powder, the joy of knowing you won’t get snow down your pants offers valuable peace of mind. If you’ve never skied in a bib, just know they take a little getting used to. Also, bibs tend to be warmer than pants, so they may not be the best choice for those balmy spring days. For more bib information, check out our favorite options for men and women.

The ski bibs versus ski pants debate is even sharper in the backcountry. One of our testers runs too warm to wear bibs in the backcountry, even on deep powder days. Others appreciate a little extra warmth.

Ski Pant Styles: Resort vs. Backcountry

While many ski pants are versatile enough for resort and backcountry skiing, certain styles are better suited for one setting.

For in-bounds skiing, we recommend pants with burly fabric, reliable waterproofing, and a semi-relaxed fit that allows room for layers underneath since you won’t often be traveling uphill while resort skiing, it’s generally okay to wear pants that mildly restrict hiking movement, as well as insulated pants to help you stay warm on the lift ride or in the lift line.

Our favorite ski pants for resort use include The North Face Insulated Freedom Ski Pants. But the articulate knees and pliable materials of the Stio Environ make it an ideal crossover ski pant that excels in the front and backcountry.

Breathability is also an elevated priority in the backcountry. Uphilling or bootpacking can be strenuous, and ample leg vents can help prevent overheating. Wearing a more breathable, highly waterproof textile is also helpful. While a 10K or 15K level of waterproofness is adequate for most ski resort storms, if you’re in the backcountry miles away from the trailhead, you will want 20K of waterproofness or more. Ideally, the breathability matches that number. Fit-wise, backcountry styles tend to be more form-fitting, so there isn’t extra fabric you’re lugging uphill or getting caught when you pull on your heavy ski pack.

Types of Fabric: Hardshell vs. Softshell

There are two traditional significant ski categories of pants: hardshell and softshell. But more and more, we see pants like the Black Diamond Recon LT Stretch Pants that blur the lines between these two types. Major companies, including Arc’teryx and Black Diamond, have been working to create softshell pants that offer plentiful mobility without sacrificing waterproofing.

Choosing between these ultimately depends on personal preference, intended use, and your typical skiing climate. One category is not strictly better or worse than the other.

Hardshell Ski Pants

Because hardshell pants are generally more popular and more common than softshells, most of the pants we’ve included on this list are hardshell.

Hardshell ski pants feature a waterproof barrier between you and the surrounding conditions. Just like hardshell jackets, pants in this category often include taped seams and tend to feel thick and hardy to the touch. You can sit down directly on the snow in a good pair of hardshell pants without worrying about a soggy bottom. If you’ll be out in snowy weather for extended periods or live in a place with high water content in the snowpack, you’ll likely want a completely waterproof layer. Skiing in the Pacific Northwest? You’re going to want a hardshell.

The main downside to hardshell pants is that they are not very soft and pliable, which can feel limiting or uncomfortable when making big moves. They’re also crunchier and create more noise. Hardshells are by far the more common choice for resort skiers. The Rab Men’s Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants are a fantastic hardshell option on this list.

Softshell Ski Pants

Softshells don’t have that waterproof barrier and, as a result, are generally more breathable. The fabric feels lighter and more flexible, and is often more form-fitting. A softshell might feel good on an ascent in the backcountry, but it won’t offer much insulation or protection from wind, either. Perhaps the best part of softshell pants is the stretch factor.

The stretchy fabric provides constriction-free movement, comfort, and versatility across outdoor activities. For example, the Outdoor Research Cirque III softshell pants easily transition from ski touring to rock climbing to hiking. Some of our testers exclusively use softshell pants in the backcountry.

Lightweight, Chemical-Free Hardshells

Hardshells are also becoming more malleable as textiles become free of PFCs. GORE-TEX spearheaded the movement with the launch of the revolutionary ePE membrane, which is replacing the brand’s membrane technologies, which outdoor industry brands utilize in apparel.

From a skier’s perspective, the fabrics that incorporate this new membrane are becoming super lightweight, smoother, more buttery, softer, and quieter. A robust 3-layer textile now feels like a 2-layer softshell fabric. However, they’re also becoming more susceptible to oil-based stains, whether olive oil from your breakfast burrito or a drippy chairlift. They require more maintenance, including machine washing and drying, to effectively barricade moisture. 

The ePE membrane, which stands for expanded polyethylene, is free of PFCs of Environmental Concern (PFCEC). The membrane launched in 2-layer outerwear in winter 2022. In winter 2023, Patagoina introduced the first-ever 3-layer winter outerwear products with the GORE-TEX ePE membrane. Now, many brands are rolling out ePE in 3-layer skiwear. 

Warmth & Insulation

Our recommendations include both insulated ski pants and non-insulated shells. Ultimately, the choice between these categories comes down to your personal preference. If you tend to run cold or frequently ski in frigid temps, you may seek a warm insulated option like The North Face Insulated Freedom Pants.

We recommend wearing shell-style pants for most skiers due to their unmatched versatility. Shells pants can be worn solo or combined with a variety of underlayers. Depending on the day’s conditions, you may combine your pants with thin baselayers, fleece pants, or both to attain the perfect level of warmth and comfort.

Durability

Ski pants inevitably take a beating. After many days of skiing through trees, rubbing against boot buckles, and sitting on chair lifts, pants will show signs of wear. Thinner and lighter ski pants are more common for backcountry skiing and touring. To withstand time and abuse, thin, light material must be reinforced with high-end textiles, especially at high-use touchpoints. 

The Mountain Hardwear Cloud Bank GORE-TEX pants stand out for its durability in the resort — they’re the kind of ski pants that will stand up to season after season of use. Heavy-duty softshells, like the Outdoor Research Cirque III ski pants, can withstand the rigors of backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering thanks to its reinforcement in high-wear areas.

Lighter-weight shell pants can be nice in the backcountry where every ounce matters. They can also suffer in the durability department if not made with tenacious fabrics like the GORE-TEX in the Rab Khroma Diffuse GORE-TEX Pants.

Waterproofing

While wearing ski pants, you’ll sit on wet surfaces and move through falling rain and snow. Reliable water resistance is an absolute must. Many styles included on this list come with high-end waterproof membranes and outer fabrics.

How Waterproofness is Measured

Waterproof ratings tell you how many millimeters of water a fabric can withstand in 24 hours — or how many milliliters of water can pass through the membrane in a day. 20,000mm and higher waterproofing can withstand heavy rainfall and any other weather you’ll encounter while skiing. GORE-TEX Pro’s 28,000mm waterproofing will protect you in virtually any weather and possibly even underwater. Anything below 10,000mm will only withstand rainfall and wet snow for a limited time.

Taped Seams

All well-made waterproof ski pants have taped seams that stop water from creeping into the garments around the stitches, waterproof zippers, and a DWR coating that makes water bead off the fabric before it encounters the inner membrane.

Backcountry Use

In the backcountry, outerwear must protect you from the elements and keep you cool. Because skiing in the backcountry involves more hiking and fewer lift rides, breathability and mobility are often considered more important than full waterproofing.

Waterproof/breathable pants like the Black Diamond Recon LT Stretch Pants are worth considering for backcountry riders and skiers. They sport a 20,000mm waterproof rating and 20,000g of breathability, which is well balanced for resort and backcountry applications.

GORE-TEX

Many companies have proprietary waterproof fabrics, like Black Diamond’s BD.Dry, but GORE-TEX has long been considered the industry’s top-tier waterproof protection. GORE-TEX fabrics use membranes with millions of microscopic pores that allow air to flow through but are too small for water to penetrate. It’s also among the most expensive.

Breathability & Ventilation

Every skier has a different comfort zone regarding temperature regulation and layering. For those who tend to run warm, breathable, and well-ventilated outerwear may be essential.

While running laps on groomers at the resort, less breathable pants like The North Face Insulated Freedom Pants will suit most skiers. If you prefer more temperature control, the Mountain Hardwear Cloud Bank GORE-TEX Pants come with zippered vents and less insulation to shed excess heat on the go. Fabric breathability has a standard measurement — moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), measured by how much moisture can pass through a m of fabric in a day (g/m2/24hrs). Fit & Cut

When selecting ski pants, a comfortable fit is all-important. Personal preference is the most important variable here. If you don’t know what fit you’re after, we recommend trying on pants before buying them.

Most resort skiers prefer a semi-loose standard fit, but not overly baggy. Conditions at the resort vary from frigid and stormy to sweaty and spring-like throughout the season, and slightly loose-fitting pants allow for versatile layering options underneath. On this list, the Flylow Chemical is a top-notch resort skiing design that conforms to the body, looks stylish, and feels great.

Slim-cut pants are common for backcountry skiing and touring because there’s less material to get snagged on crampons, ski edges, or boots. Adding a hardshell, puffy belay pants, or a harness for glacier travel over slim-cut touring pants is easier than adding a baggier pair.

Stretch

Stretch can have a pronounced impact on how ski pants perform and your ability to move in them, but not all ski pants are the stretchiest. In many cases, stretch has an inverse relationship with waterproofness.

But most ski pants offer adequate stretch for the average skier taking turns down a groomed slope. When you’re backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, or skimo racing and hiking up a steep hill, you’ll want greater stretch everywhere, including the seams and groin area. That’s why backcountry-focused ski pants, like the Black Diamond Recon LT Stretch Pants, employ stretchy fabrics.

When buying ski pants, you can test the restriction by lunging, squatting, and taking long strides.

How To Wash & Dry Your Ski Pants

Riders might notice their ski pants stop shedding water as droplets, which bead and roll off the surface. That’s the cue to wash your pants.

Maintaining water repellency is especially important for today’s GORE-TEX ePE fabrics, which are PFAS-free. These newer textiles deliver waterproof, breathable performance but are more vulnerable. With proper care, the ePE membrane — now used by many brands in ski pants —retains its waterproofness and breathability by removing grime that would otherwise compromise performance.

“PFAS-free DWR coatings require more frequent wash and care to maintain water repellency on face fabrics,” explained GORE-TEX expert Marshall Balick during an outdoor industry presentation Senior Editor Morgan Tilton attended in Nelson, British Columbia.

Balick emphasized detergent choice. The best option is a technical wash without additives. If that isn’t on hand, a conventional, scent-free detergent without fabric softeners, like Seventh Generation, will do. Even if the only option is a scented detergent with softener, such as Tide, it’s still better to wash your jacket than skip the wash — just double-rinse. Later, follow up with a technical detergent to flush out leftover additives.

After cleaning, hang the pants to dry, then toss them in the dryer for 20 minutes on medium heat to fully reactivate the durable water repellent (DWR). If the face fabric still fails to bead water, it’s time to reapply an aftermarket treatment such as Nikwax.

Regardless, these fabrics are more likely to experience oil-based stains — from a breakfast burrito dripping olive oil to grease on a chairlift. We’re rooting for an advancement in that department.

Price & Value

The cheapest pair of ski pants on our list is the Outdoor Research Cirque III at $179, but these are an outlier and relatively niche product. They are stretchy softshell pants best suited to the backcountry that do not come with a waterproof membrane or insulation. 

Budget: Basic Insulation & Waterproofing

The entry-level price for ski pants with waterproofing and insulation is between $200 and $300, like the North Face Insulated Freedom Pants ($220) and Eddie Bauer Chair Six Pants ($229). 

These can be excellent ski pants for weekend warriors or those just getting into the sport. We wouldn’t recommend going any cheaper than this price point for a solid pair of ski pants. More affordable options don’t last long and will struggle to keep you warm and dry. Your legs and your ski day will thank you!

Mid-Tier: Higher Quality Fabrics

As you go up in price, you’ll get more advanced and often recycled fabrics, higher durability, and better elements. The next price tier is between $300 and $400. 

Pants in this range, like the Rab Men’s Khroma Kinetic Waterproof Pants ($340), often employ three-layer waterproof fabrics in the 20,000mm range that typically breathe better than cheaper options.

Some options may even include two-layer GORE-TEX membranes, like the Patagonia Storm Shift Pants ($399), which are plentifully waterproof and breathable. 

Insulated versions typically come with high-quality third-party insulation, like Primaloft. Most skiers will be able to find an excellent pair of ski pants in this price range that strikes an outstanding balance of durability, style, and protection from the elements. 

Premium: Top-Level Waterproofing, Breathability, Durability

Ski Pants that cost more than $400 utilize premium fabrics, like GORE-TEX Pro, which offer higher waterproofing, breathability, and durability. It’ll also include high-end details like waterproof zippers. The Rab Khroma Diffuse ($445) is an example of a solid pair of ski pants at this higher price point. Bibs are also typically more expensive than ski pants and tend to fall into this category.

The most expensive ski pants, like Norrøna’s Lofoten GORE-TEX Pro Plus Pants ($999), also tend to have higher sustainability ratings and often employ recycled materials, as well as the most breathable, waterproof, and durable fabric available on the market. But still, that’s pretty darn expensive for a pair of pants — but they do convert into bibs, and we really enjoyed wearing them in the backcountry.

Ski pants are purpose-built lower-body skiing outerwear. While specific-use ski pants are not strictly necessary, we always recommend using the proper tool for the job.

An average day of skiing includes inclement weather, rugged terrain, and thousands of mid-ski lunges and micro squats. Plus, the cuffs must fit over bulky ski boots and seal out the snow. Designers specifically create high-quality ski pants to accommodate these unique circumstances. Other pants just aren’t quite up to the task — especially jeans!

What are the best ski pants for beginners?

The best ski pants for beginners are comfortable, durable, and budget-friendly. Unlike skis themselves, ski pants don’t exist on a beginner-to-expert spectrum. Though some pairs are more expensive and more feature-packed than others, your choice of pants probably won’t make or break your skiing ability, but it will impact how long you’re willing to stick it out in inclement weather.

We recommend that beginners, especially at the resort, select a fully waterproof pair of hardshell ski pants. When learning to ski, you can expect to fall often and spend plenty of time sitting on the snow. A dry skier is a happy skier, and a happy skier is more likely to learn and progress.

Do I need layers under my ski pants?

In almost any conditions, we recommend wearing a thin pair of baselayer bottoms under your ski pants at the very least. When choosing a baselayer, we recommend close-fitting designs with soft and comfortable materials such as merino wool or polyester.

Other layers, such as fleece pants, can provide additional insulation and warmth on cold days. If you tend to run cold, we recommend insulated styles such as The North Face Insulated Freedom Pants.

What is RECCO?

Many high-end ski pants come equipped with a built-in RECCO reflector. These compact and passive units can be detected by devices frequently carried by ski patrollers and search and rescue teams.

RECCO is often used for rescue missions, but cannot replace an avalanche beacon required for safe backcountry travel. When someone gets lost, the RECCO reflector becomes an additional safety measure that may aid in locating them. The Mountain Hardwear Cloud Bank GORE-TEX Pants include a RECCO device.

Do my ski pants need to be waterproof?

Skiing can get wet fast, and being damp or soaked in winter means you’ll be cold. Designers create ski pants to keep the elements at bay so you can enjoy full days on the mountain. Waterproof membranes help make ski pants waterproof but still breathable.

The most waterproof fabrics carry a rating of 28,000mm. That level of waterproofing will protect skiers in virtually any weather, including extended heavy rain. In many cases, it’s overkill for resort skiing in Intermountain and Continental climates, which are drier than Coastal and Transitional climates. It’s also the most expensive.

Ski pants with 20,000mm waterproof ratings are the sweet spot in terms of value for resort skiing. They’ll keep you dry in winter weather, but they’re slightly cheaper. 

Many skiers skip the most waterproof pants in the backcountry for more stretch and breathability. This can work great in drier winter snow climates, but of course, it comes with limitations in terms of protection in wet weather.

Our Testing Grounds

Our test team is centered in Crested Butte, Colorado, home to world-class resort steeps and legendary backcountry riding. We tested from the groomers to the park, to backcountry bowls, and even some backcountry snowmobile shuttling. Conditions ranged from double-digit negative lift lines to hot spring laps with every powder day in between. 

Our Testing Process

When testing men’s snowboard jackets, we consider a range of key attributes, including fit, style, durability, functionality, ease of movement, zipper quality, pocket design and utility, waterproofness, breathability, snow exclusion, insulation, hood, collar, wrist gaiters, cuffs, and overall value.

We consider the climate and purpose for which each jacket is best suited. We also consider the most innovative, sustainable, popular, acclaimed, and legacy products across a range of price points and applications.

Insulation

Most snowboard jackets on the market are not insulated; instead, they come as just a shell. This means instead of having built-in insulation, one is expected to wear insulation underneath the shell on days that require extra warmth.

The benefit of a shell jacket is that it’s more versatile, allowing for layering to be tailored to the wearer. Meaning you could use it across a wider range of conditions, as opposed to a non-removable insulated jacket, which can be too hot for spring resort days or any backcountry touring.

Some jackets, like the 686 Smarty Rodeo and The North Face Thermoball, come with a removable insulating layer, allowing the jacket to be used as either an insulated layer or a shell, depending on your needs.

Most insulated jackets have the insulation built in as opposed to a removable layer. These jackets are often warmer and bulkier than a shell, though less bulky than a shell with a layer underneath. A bonus of insulated jackets is that the vents often run directly through the insulation to your baselayer. The downside of these jackets is that they might be too warm for spring riding or heavy activity like touring.

For most jackets, you’ll need to provide your own insulation in the form of layers. We recommend starting with a base layer; you can find the perfect one in our Men’s Base Layers guide. Next would be a midlayer, such as a fleece, a microgrid jacket, or even a puffy jacket. For really cold days, you can double down on this layer before adding in your shell jacket over top.

Waterproofing and Breathability

Snowboard jackets come in a range of waterproofness levels. The more waterproof a fabric is, the better it will protect you when there is a high water content in the snow — like in the PNW — or if you are outside in a blizzard for hours on end. Often, if a jacket is more waterproof, the breathability tends to decline. Premium jackets are able to maintain ultra-breathability with top-tier waterproofness, which is reflected in the overall cost.

The industry benchmark for waterproofness is GORE-TEX, a membrane that’s integrated into various 3-layer jacket designs or other in-house membranes. Typically, waterproofness is measured by the amount of water that can be placed on top of a fabric before it leaks, from 5,000 to 20,000mm or greater.

Preferred Waterproofness Based on Climate

The amount of waterproofing in a jacket can be paired with certain climates and weather patterns nationwide:

• 0-5,000mm: Resistant to light rain, dry snow
• 6,000-10,000mm: Waterproof for light rain and dry, non-heavy snow
• 11,000-15,000mm: Waterproof for moderate rain and dry, non-heavy snow
• 16,000-20,000mm: Waterproof for heavy rain and wet snow
• 20,000mm and greater: Waterproof for heavy rain and dense, wet, heavy snow

For many locations, a waterproof range of 10,000 to 15,000 mm works well for mild to moderate precipitation.

If you generally snowboard in a wetter climate with heavier snow (meaning the snow’s water equivalent, or the water content in the snow, is higher) or you want to use your snowboard jacket in the backcountry, a jacket with more waterproofing is a good choice.

On the scale of waterproofness, 30K is equivalent to a 747 jet, while 10K is comparable to a tiny bush airplane. The upper-end of protection is the most waterproof and ideal for coastal snow climates. Jackets with 10,000mm of waterproofing ratings are great for pairing with mild and moderate weather patterns and drier snow climates.

Face fabric treatments can also help make a jacket more waterproof, but they wear off with time and need to be reapplied. Traditional coatings are toxic for humans and the environment, and brands have been rolling out eco-friendly formulas, which are typically labeled PFC-free: Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are synthetic chemicals. Some snowboard jackets also feature fully sealed seams and waterproof zippers for added moisture protection.

Vents

Vents refer to zippered openings in the outer shell of the fabric that extend directly to the inside, unlike a pocket, which is lined. The primary function of a vent is to let hot air trapped inside the jacket out, while also preventing snow from entering.

Venting is simple; the larger the vent, the more air can escape, and the more heat can be dissipated. For resort riding, small to normal-sized vents work just fine, but when you find yourself bootpacking or backcountry touring, you’ll quickly realize the need for a larger vent opening to dump the excess heat your body generates during vigorous activity.

Vents help keep snow out in two ways. The first is placement. Generally, on jackets, the mechanical vents are placed directly below the armpits, known as pit zips. When riding — unless you’re lying in snow — it’s hard to get snow into these openings. The Salomon Venom Jacket has the underarm vents toward the chest rather than underneath the arms, and we’re still undecided about the functionality and ease of use.

The second way vents block snow is through a mesh lining, similar to the one found on the Burton [ak] Cyclic Jacket. When considering a jacket, first consider the use case and find one that vents appropriately, such as large vents for backcountry excursions.

Powder Skirt

Anyone who has experienced a proper powder day has also experienced falling in powder; that stuff gets everywhere, and the last place you want it is up your back or down your pants.

Thankfully, most snowboard jackets feature a powder skirt, or a stretchy piece of fabric that attaches around your waist, preventing snow from getting past and into your jacket. You can think of it like a snow barrier belt; simply clip it around your waist, ensuring it’s seated lower than your pants, and you’re ready to send it into the deep, fluffy stuff.

On some jackets, such as the 686 Smarty Rodeo, the powder skirt can be easily removed via a zipper on days when you don’t need it. Other jackets, such as the Dakine Triton, feature an adjustable powder skirt to accommodate smaller or larger waists. This is done through two sets of snap buttons. On other jackets like the Burton [ak] Cyclic, the powder skirt can even clip into snow pants, preventing it from riding up or letting snow into the gap.

At the end of the day, if you live or plan to ride somewhere with deep powder, we highly recommend a jacket with a powder skirt. 

Pockets

Snowboard jackets are generally worn at the resort, as opposed to the backcountry, where one is using a backpack. At the resort, many people ride without a backpack, leaving only the pockets of their jacket and pants to hold everything for the day, such as keys, wallet, snacks, water, headphones, action cameras, and more.

Exterior Pockets

There are four main types of pockets found in snowboard jackets. First is the chest pocket, which is found on one or both sides of the chest and is a great option for a phone; some jackets often have a connection point here for wired headphones (if anyone still uses those). You can often easily access this pocket while wearing a backpack, like on the Jones Shralpanist.

The next set of pockets are hand pockets or cargo pockets, which are found on the front of the jacket, near the waist, and are great for warming hands or storing snacks. Next is a pass pocket, a small pocket designed to hold a ski pass, usually located on the left arm. We find these particularly helpful for safely holding and scanning our ski pass, as well as doubling as a credit card/ID pocket.

Interior Pockets

Lastly, there are interior pockets often referred to as stash pockets. These are typically mesh-lined, open-top pockets located on the inside of the jacket, often on one or both sides of the zipper. These pockets are ideal for storing large items, such as goggles, skins, action cameras, water bladders, and more. You can stash a lot in these pockets, just be aware you won’t have quick access, meaning you’ll have to unzip the jacket to reach any item.

Some additional pocket qualities we like are integrated goggle wipes, like the one found within The North Face Thermoball jackets’ pass pocket. Other jackets, like the Burton [ak] Cyclic, have extra insulation on the phone/media pocket to keep your phone battery from freezing as quickly.

Price & Value

The prices in our snowboard jackets guide range from budget-friendly choices to top-of-the-line expedition gear, though most fall somewhere in the middle, around $300.

Budget

For those who aren’t looking to break the bank and don’t need cutting-edge high-performance technology, there are plenty of options available in the $200 – $300 budget tier. These lower-priced jackets are a great starting point for beginner and intermediate riders; while they might not be as feature-packed or handle harsh conditions as well, they will get you out on the slopes. Lower-cost options are often less durable, lack additional qualities, and are less likely to withstand repeated harsh conditions. However, for milder, drier climates or infrequent seasonal use, a budget option can often be the best choice. This price tier still has some great and particularly stylish offerings like the Salomon Venom Anorak ($280) and Dakine Men’s Triton 15K Shell Jacket ($280).

Mid-Tier

At the mid-tier, $300 – $400 is the sweet spot for most riders. Most of the jackets in our guide fall into this category. Jackets here feature higher waterproofing and breathability of fabrics, higher-quality fabrics that offer increased durability, more garnishes like fleece-lined zippered pockets, insulation, and sustainability. Jackets here are often more than enough for regular resort riding and even some sidecountry.

Premium

Ventilation is addressed through Air-Flo mesh-lined inner thigh vents; however, when wearing the inner liner, we found these vents to be inadequate for effective cooling. The inclusion of a BOA-compatible boot system in the gaiter and the Pant Jacket Connect system ensures these pants won’t move around or let excess snow inside. 

The pants are described by 686 as having a modern fit, which we observed to be slightly large and baggy, with some of the pants bunching up around the ankles, although they allowed a full range of motion. The fleece liner pants have a smaller inseam than the shells, which becomes noticeable when wearing the fleece pants alone; however, it does help when layering. Overall, the combination of adaptability, durability, and functional design makes the SMARTY 3-in-1 Cargo Pant a commendable choice for those seeking a versatile layering system.

Leading the gear testing, contributor Eric Phillips has been snowboarding since 2005. Teaching professionally at multiple ski resorts, he is an avid resort charger, splitboarder, snowmobiler, powsurfer, and works in search and rescue in southwest Colorado. Our Testing Grounds

Our test team is centered in Crested Butte, Colorado, home to world-class resort steeps and legendary backcountry riding. We tested from the groomers, to the park, to backcountry bowls, and even some side country snowmobile shuttling. Conditions ranged from double-digit negative lift lines to hot spring laps with every powder day in between.  

Our Testing Process

While testing snowboard pants, we consider overall fit, function, durability, vents, gaiters, boot compatibility, waistband, belt loops, ease of movement, pockets, cuff reinforcement, weather protection — including precipitation, cold temps, and wind — style, sustainability, and value.

We also take into consideration the most novel, popular, highly rated, and legacy products across a range of price points.

Insulation

Most snowboard pants for men on the market are not insulated; instead, they come as a shell pant. This means instead of having built-in insulation, one is expected to wear insulation underneath the shell on days that require extra warmth. The benefit of a shell pant is that it’s more versatile, allowing for layering that comes down to the wearer. Some pants, like the Smarty 3-in-1, come with an insulating layer, allowing them to be used as either insulated pants or just a shell, depending on your needs for the day. 

For those seeking a traditional, insulated snowboard pant — one that is always insulated, as opposed to requiring layering — we have options in our guide. A benefit of insulated pants is that they are often less bulky compared to a shell with a layer underneath, additionally they are always warm for those who run cold, some pants like the North Face Freedom come with 60 g of insulation plenty for cold conditions while others like the Salomon Venom pant are only slightly insulated at 40 g making the pant more versatile across conditions so you can still use them all season long without worry of a cold butt on the chairlift.

Waterproofing and Breathability 

Arguably, the main job of a pair of snow pants is to keep snow or water out of the pants, no matter if you’re sitting on a wet chairlift or riding in damp snow. That’s where the waterproofing rating comes into play. 

Waterproofing is measured in millimeters and is a great way to compare different pants. The higher the rating, the more effective it is at keeping water from penetrating the fabric. At the same time, the higher the rating, the higher the price tag usually is as well. Below are the three tiers of waterproofing:

•  0 — 10,000 mm:  Ideal for dry or mostly dry climates like the Midwest
• 10,000 — 20,000 mm: Ideal for wet climates like the mountain west
• 20,000 — 30,000 mm: Ideal for very wet climates like the Pacific Northwest

Besides the waterproof rating, there are a few other design aspects that help keep water out. The best well-made waterproof snowboard pants will feature fully taped seams, waterproof zippers, and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating.

Breathability refers to the amount of hot air that can escape from the pants without allowing water to enter. Typically, as waterproof ratings increase, the breathability of the fabric declines because a stronger waterproof barrier prevents moisture from the inside from getting through to breathe. 

Most pants these days try to have a similar breathability rating to that of its waterproofing to keep users in the perfect middle ground of dryness. Another factor of breathability is the varying degrees of venting; pants with larger vents are more suited to backcountry uses and hiking as they dump heat more effectively. 

In general, it comes down to personal preference, riding conditions, and price point when determining the ideal amount of waterproofing for you. For those who run warm, a breathable fabric with large vents may be necessary; alternatively, someone who runs cold in a wet climate, such as the PNW, might opt for a higher level of waterproofing than a Midwest snowboarder. 

Vents 

Different types of fabric have varying levels of breathability in snowboard pants. You can read the breathability and waterproof ratings to get an idea of how easily the fabric allows air to pass through. The more waterproof a fabric is, generally the less breathable it is. If a pant is insulated, expect it to feel warmer.

Regardless of insulation, breathability, and waterproofness, a pant with mechanical vents offers the ability to regulate body temperature. The larger the vent openings, the more heat one can dump and the easier it is. For high-output activities, such as backcountry touring, bootpacking, hiking, or riding hard in warm temperatures, venting is crucial to avoid overheating and excessive sweating.

In general, snowboard pants have zippered venting on the inner thigh. Some pants, like the Burton [ak] Cyclic, have a vent that extends from one thigh through the crotch to the other, creating a single, large vent. Snowboard bibs, on the other hand, usually have larger vents found on the outside of the thigh. It’s also nice when pants have an interior mesh liner to help keep out snow or debris, and also offer some privacy for those who don’t like to wear a base layer underneath. 

When choosing a pair of snowboard pants, ensure the venting is suitable for the type of activity you plan to use the pants for. Large vents are necessary for any backcountry use. 

Gaiters

Let’s talk about gaiters — no, not the reptile! Gaiters refer to the fabric inside the bottom cuff of the pants. This inner fabric is designed to stretch over your boots, creating a seal that prevents snow and dirt from entering your pants and boots. All pants in our guide have built-in gaiters as they are an integral part of a snowboard pant. Snowboard-specific pants often feature a larger diameter gaiter and cuff than ski pants, allowing them to fit over larger snowboard boots. 

With the rise in popularity of the BOA system, pants like the Burton [ak] Cyclic and the 686 Smarty both have a BOA-compatible gaiter, which is a window where the front-facing BOA — a dial that turns to tighten the cable laces in a boot — can be accessed and stays operable with the gaiter pulled down.

For additional boot protection, a reinforced cuff is also found in a quality pair of pants. Frequent rubbing against the resort’s surfaces or on the chairlift can lead to excessive wear on the inner pant leg, partly due to the metal edges of snowboards. In backcountry environments or when using snowmobiles, the wear is exceptionally worse. Consider a pair of pants with reinforced kick panels at the cuffs, depending on your level of activity. 

Pockets

Snowboard pants are generally worn at the resort, as opposed to the backcountry, where one is using a backpack. At the resort, many people ride without a backpack, relying solely on the pockets of their snowboard jackets and pants to hold essentials for the day, such as keys, wallets, snacks, water, headphones, a GoPro, and more. 

There are three main types of pockets found in snowboard pants: hand pockets along the upper thigh, cargo pockets along the middle thigh, and butt pockets on the backside. Snowboarders spend more time sitting than skiers, and oftentimes snowboard pants don’t come with rear pockets for this reason. 

For riders who want a lot of storage, the 686 Smarty Pants are a great option. For those wanting even more storage, consider a bib pant instead of a regular pant for the extra chest pockets that often come on bibs. Some pants, like the Burton [ak] Cyclic, have interior mesh pockets inside zippered pockets to keep items from bouncing around when riding.

The prices in our snowboard pants guide range from budget-friendly choices to top-of-the-line expedition gear.

Budget: $200 or Less

The budget tier generally consists of pants near or below the $200 range.  These lower-priced pants are a great starting point for beginner and intermediate riders; while they might not be as feature-packed or handle as harsh conditions as well, they will get you out on the slopes. Lower-cost options are often less durable, lack advanced design characteristics, and are less resistant to repeated harsh conditions.

However, for milder climates or infrequent seasonal use, a budget option can often be the best choice. This price tier still has some great offerings like the Salomon Venom Pant ($200), The North Face Freedom Insulated Pants ($200), and the Dakine Rodgers 10K Cargo Pant ($200). 

Mid-Tier: Up to $400

At the mid-tier, $200 to $400 is the sweet spot for most riders. This category has higher waterproofing and breathability of fabrics, higher quality fabrics that offer increased durability, plus details like zippered pockets, reinforced kick panels, vents, and more.

Premium: Above $400

Above the $400 price tag, you’ll find the top-shelf, premium snow pants. Snowboard pants in this category will feature premium fabrics, precise details, and a tailored fit. These fabrics are often the highest rated in terms of waterproofing and breathability, and they will last longer in harsh climates than the other tiers. If price isn’t an issue, this tier really delivers on performance.
