A roomy and tough carry-on bag is the only surefire way to prevent an airline from losing your luggage and sending your trip into a tailspin. As one of those weirdos like me who refuse to travel with checked luggage, I was intrigued by Victorinox’s Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business ($543).

Like the multitools that Victorinox is known for, there’s more to the Mythic Frequent Flyer than meets the eye. Many carry-on bags are either hardshell or fabric, but the Frequent Flyer is a hybrid of the two. Plus, the eight wheels and internal organization showed a lot of promise. So I trusted it with my gear for a slew of week-long trips. I haven’t found any tweezers stashed away anywhere (OH MY GOD IT ACTUALLY HAS TWEEZERS), but I’m still looking.

In short: The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is a high-end carry-on roller bag. It’s a fabric and hardshell hybrid that’s tough, roomier than it looks, and rolls very well. Aside from a few dings, the bag is very tough, and its interior organization is perfect for the Type A traveler.

Founded in 1884, Swiss company Victorinox is known for creating the original Swiss Army Knife. While most famous for its multitools, the company has expanded its offerings into other areas, including cutlery, watches, travel gear, and even fragrances. The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is part of the company’s newest line of luggage, the Mythic collection. 

How I Tested the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On

I used the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business on half a dozen trips, including both road trips and air travel, over a period of about 4 months. These trips ranged from 2 days to over a week long, and I made it a point to use this bag exclusively, along with a backpack. I tested the pack for durability, ease of use, and utility during these trips.

Key Features

The Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On is primarily made of durable, recycled hardshell plastic. The front panel, however, has an aesthetically pleasing fabric with several organizational pockets. This hybrid design combines the protection of a hardshell carry-on with the additional pockets and softer look of fabric. 

There are four double-wheel castors that ensure smooth rolling, and the telescopic handle deploys smoothly and is very sturdy. And (it took me a while to find these), there are some nods to Victorinox’s Swiss Army Knife origins — a tiny pen is hidden under the handle, and a pair of tweezers is stashed inside the logo on the back.

The Good 

When you’re deciding on a carry-on roller bag, you usually have to decide between a super-protective hardshell design and a more pocket-friendly fabric design. The Mythic Frequent Flyer offers the best of both worlds with a protective hardshell over the bottom and most of the top, and a fabric front with extra pockets and organization. 

I refuse to check bags, so I’m very picky about the carry-ons that I travel with. I love hardshells because I can sit on them to cram more gear in, but I hate having to open the bag and cram it shut if I need to get any small items out of it. The front pockets on the Mythic Carry-On are an excellent solution.

The front pocket has foam-padded slots, including one that fits a 14” laptop and one that fits an 11” tablet. The tablet pocket is lined with a soft material to protect the tablet screen as well. There are also two open pockets to store cords or a charger, as well as a zip pocket for passports and other essentials. I travel with a Kindle Fire tablet (don’t judge me), so I loved the ability to just open it up and grab it anytime I had a chance to stop and read. 

Inside are two main compartments. One side of the carry-on is open with a locking strap to compress its contents, and the other zips shut. This came in handy when I traveled home from a hiking trip with muddy boots — I stowed them in there to keep them separated from the rest of my gear. The zippered compartment also has two more pockets and a handy little pocket for stashing an AirTag or any other tracker that you use.  

The compression and organization worked like a charm on every trip. I was able to pack a week’s worth of clothes and gear on a recent trip to Texas and still had room to cram in a few books I picked up on the trip. 

In the airport, the wheels glided smoothly, and I never felt like the bag was going to tip over. The telescoping handle is sturdy, and the deployment is very smooth. I never had to furiously shake it to make it work, unlike with other bags. 

It’s worth mentioning that it’s just a great-looking bag. The fabric front with the Victorinox emblem just looks classy. Plus, Victorinox added a few fun little inside jokes. There’s a hidden ID pad just underneath the handle, and right next to it is a little pen, just like the ones you’ll find in the company’s Swiss Army Knives.

But the real kicker is the tiny set of tweezers set into the logo on the back of the bag. It’s a little detail, and I may never use it, but it’s an excellent nod to the company’s origins. 

The Bad

There’s a lot to love about the Mythic Carry On, but I did have one big mishap. On the first trip I took with it, a flight to Tennessee, one of the zipper tabs on the front panel broke off. It has two zippers, so I can still use the bag, but it’s a bit inconvenient. 

I have no idea what happened — I’m guessing that the tab got caught on something when I was stowing it in the plane’s overhead compartment. It might have been a one-off accident, but for a bag that costs north of $500, I expected more. 

Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On: Final Thoughts

The broken zipper tab is a concern, and the bag does accumulate some scuffs and scars over time, but this carry-on roller has been a solid traveling companion. For everything from weekend getaways to week-long treks, it has fit all my gear with room for more. 

The organization is excellent without creating a cluttered interior, and it allows easy access to your electronics and other necessities. Plus, the fun design add-ons like little multitool features are a reminder of where the company started (you’ll never know when you need tweezers). If you’re looking for a bag that looks good, keeps your gear safe, and rolls like a dream, the Victorinox Mythic Frequent Flyer Carry-On Business is a solid choice.

Kentucky may be known for its horse racing and bourbon tasting, but the state has plenty of natural beauty to offer as well. Red River Gorge (RRG), approximately an hour from Lexington, is a fantastic spot for fall and spring outdoor adventures. It’s beautiful, quiet, and family-friendly.

Pack the car and bring the kids to RRG to camp, climb, hike, and enjoy Kentucky’s lush natural landscape. Here are some of our favorite trails, activities, and eats to help you make the most of your time.

What Makes RRG Special

The “Red,” in general, refers to a large natural area in east-central Kentucky along the Red River. It encompasses the Red River Gorge Geological Area, along with several small towns, vast swaths of Daniel Boone National Forest, dozens of hiking trails, and nearly 100 climbing areas.

The area is renowned for its series of canyons, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and unique rock formations, all formed through erosion, time, and the waters of the Red River.

Most areas are free to access, and affordable camping is plentiful. It’s possible to have a family getaway at the Red that won’t break the bank.

Outdoor tourism is a bedrock of the local economy. Climbers alone spend $8.7 million here annually, according to a 2021 study. To cater to visitors, the area offers numerous cabin rentals, campgrounds, and guided recreation services. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a newbie just dipping your toes into the outdoors, there’s something at Red River Gorge for you.

Guide to Red River Gorge

Hiking

The great thing about most hikes in RRG is that they all offer some kind of cool sight, such as a rock bridge, waterfall, or canyon vista. You’re not just hiking in a forest (as pleasant as that may be). Your hiking will be rewarded with something spectacular.

If you’re bringing younger kids along, try the Grays Arch (2.5 miles) or Rock Bridge Loop (1.5 miles) trails. Both are well-maintained, relatively flat, and include impressive stone formations and waterfalls.

For a slightly longer hike, check out the Auxier Ridge Trail (4.5 miles). On this loop, you’ll get your fill of classic RRG sights, like Haystack Rock, Raven Rock, and Courthouse Rock. Add on another two miles, and you’ll be able to get to the Double Arch, another impressive landmark. If you’re looking to backpack, try section-hiking part of the Sheltowee Trace Trail. It’s a 343-mile thru-hike that passes through the Red.

Climbing

With over 100 crags and 4,000 routes, the Red is a true climber’s paradise. On any given weekend in the fall, you’re bound to see local restaurants and campsites filled with self-described dirtbags who are stoked to climb.

You don’t need to be experienced to get outside and enjoy some of the Southeast’s most impressive rock, though. There are multiple guided, accredited climbing guiding services in the area, including Southeast Mountain Guides and Bluegrass Climbing School. In addition to classic outdoor climbing, there’s also via ferrata, which gives a unique perspective and vista on the gorge.

Paddling

Like anywhere in the Southeast, the Red River Gorge can be hot and humid in the summer. If you visit during this season, kayaking is the perfect escape.

If you’re looking for a relaxed day at a calm lake, try Mill Creek Lake, which is also popular with anglers. An 8-mile section of the middle of the Red River (from the KY 715 bridge to the KY 77 bridge) is also quite calm and paddleable.

For more of an adventure, with Class II and III waters, check out 10 miles on the upper part of the Red River (from Big Branch to KY 715). Kayak rentals are available through various providers, including Kayak the Red and Red River Adventure.

Where to Stay & Other Logistics

Camping

Camping is the most affordable lodging option in the Red River Gorge. Climbers tend to stay at Miguel’s, Lago Linda Hideaway, and Land of the Arches Campground. These places offer first-come, first-served sites for around $5-8 per night. They include Wi-Fi, bathrooms, showers, and other basic amenities. Be aware that they tend to be quite full and busy on the weekends in the fall.

The Forest Service also allows backcountry dispersed camping in Daniel Boone National Forest, provided that you’ve obtained a pass, which costs $5 per day or $7 for 3 days. There are multiple established USFS-run campsites in the area as well that have the same fee structure; find more info here.

Cabins and Rentals

For a step up from a tent, there’s a plethora of cabins, houses, and other short-term rentals available at Red River Gorge. Options range from basic and no-frills to luxe setups with hot tubs and more. Major renters include Red River Gorge Cabins, Red River Gorgeous, and Scenic Cabin Rentals.

With the small size of towns here and the uneven, rocky terrain, traditional hotels are rather rare. If you want access to a wider range of options and services, Lexington, a city of over 300,000 people, is about an hour’s drive away.

Where to Eat

Miguel’s Pizza, open since the 1980s, is a local icon. In the morning, it’s got hot coffee and build-your-own breakfast burritos. After a long day in the outdoors, refuel with hearty pizzas and housemade margaritas.

From Thursday to Sunday, Red River Rockhouse serves up burgers and burritos. For a slightly more refined experience, visit farm-to-table joint Hop’s.

The nearest grocery store — a Kroger in Stanton — is about 20 minutes away from the heart of the gorge. If you’ll need more than the necessities that this small store provides, be sure to stop by larger stores in Winchester or Lexington on your drive in.

Gear

Should you find yourself in need of outdoor gear while at the Red, Miguel’s has a small gear shop. It’s mainly oriented toward climbers, but it also has other apparel and camping necessities.

The closest large outdoor supply store is in Lexington. J&H Outdoors has been open since 1972 and should carry anything you might need.

Best Time of Year to Visit Red River Gorge

Fall (September to October) and spring (April to May) are the most popular times to visit the park, because the temperatures are at their mildest and the scenery is amazing.

In the fall, the color change in the Appalachian woodlands is breathtaking. It can be a busy time to visit Red River Gorge, but it’s worth it if you’ve never seen autumn in this environment. The reds, golds, and yellows light the forests up with warm hues that stretch as far as the eye can see. Temperatures are cooler, so you’ll want to bring a jacket and a beanie. But the weather is usually mild and predictable.

Spring in Red River Gorge is also beautiful. The trees are budding, the birds are chirping, and the world is exploding with life as it reemerges from the depths of winter. This time of year is far less busy than the fall, and temperatures are generally warmer (but be prepared for cooler days as well).

In summer, the Red River Gorge area is at its hottest and most humid. It’s still beautiful if you can handle the muggy climate and buggy environment. Winter is by far the slowest time of year at Red River Gorge. It’s also a great time for climbing, as your hands won’t sweat and can grip the rock better. However, it will be colder, and the trees will not have their leaves, making for some distinctly different seasonal scenery.

If you’re a bit intimidated by adding a roof accessory to your rig, the user-friendly Yakima Skybox Carbonite ($550-820) is a great option. The design includes five size options. Tried and true, this rooftop cargo box is among the most durable and secure on the market. The silhouette is streamlined, narrow, and long.

We use ours in all seasons and across various outdoor trips to load up skis or kayak paddles for the family. And there’s still space on the roof rack for our bikes, kayaks, or standup paddleboards — that’s pretty hard to beat.

We appreciate the texturized lid, which helps hide scuff marks and grime. Plus, the box is mostly weatherproof (but we recommend that electronics or valuables go inside the cab or a dry bag for good measure).

The listed weight capacity for the Carbonite is 165 pounds, but Yakima says that the capacity may vary depending on the vehicle. 

Overall, between the ease of use and installation, the relatively low price, and the ability to access cargo from either side, the Yakima Skybox Carbonite is our go-to.

We’re hard-pressed to find a more dependable investment than a RocketBox — some of our family members still have theirs from the ’90s. Today’s Yakima RocketBox Pro ($470-600) comes in several capacities. Plus, the 11- and 12-cubic-foot options are on the lower end of the price scale.

You could pick up a more compact choice like the Inno Ridge Box ($400) for less money with no space to haul skis or snowboards. But the extra bucks could be worth the length and the decades of use you’ll get out of the RocketBox. 

While it doesn’t have the sturdy feel that you’d find on higher-end boxes, we never experienced any on-the-road failures. Plus, we like the fact that we can fit our skis and snowboards in the narrow, long Yakima RocketBox Pro while still having half of the roof rack open for other equipment like surfboards or bikes.

The Thule Motion 3 XL ($999) offers a lightweight, easy-to-install, and aerodynamic rooftop box that also sports a clean, sporty look.

The 18 cubic feet of storage space of our test model provides enough room for both ski trips and camping getaways while not being overly tall. The handle provides easy one-handed access for fast loading and unloading, which is easy to reach from the ground, even on taller SUVs. It also comes with a helpful strap to pull the unit shut from the ground. This makes it much easier to avoid having to climb on the seat of larger vehicles, a welcome feature, especially in the wintertime.

But the main feature here that really shines is the speed at which you can install and remove this box. It’s perfect for people who don’t always need or want the box installed and have the space to store it when not in use. At 51 pounds, the Thule Motion 3 XL is not the lightest model we tested, but the weight is balanced enough that we could install it without help from another person.

On the premium end, the Thule Vector ($2,400) is one of the sleekest, most stylish, and superbly made options out there. This luxurious rooftop cargo box features two models with the same volume and load capacity but different dimensions and weights. Beyond its classier shape, we found the design extremely functional, easy to install, and simple to operate daily. To boot, this rigid box is reinforced with steel along the base.

As you’ve probably noticed, this is one of the pricier options you’ll find, and there are some very cool features that come along with the price tag. There are integrated tie-down straps, which were useful in preventing our gear from sliding around, and a white interior lid and integrated LED light that illuminated the contents, making it easy to find our gear in the dark. Probably the most bougie feature is the felt-lined floor, which keeps your precious gear from getting scratched up during transit. Plus, the whole box just looks pretty damn cool.

That said, if you’re just looking for a rooftop cargo box to throw your gear in, this ain’t the one. But if you want a sharp-looking, capable box with all the bells and whistles (and you’ve got the dough to pay for it), the Thule Vector is the way to go.

Yakima’s Skybox line just expanded with its Skybox NX ($749-$799) to maximize interior space. The larger nose allows duffel bags and small totes to be stowed up front, where normally you’d be wasting space where those items wouldn’t quite fit.

Of course, the tradeoff is a bit less aerodynamic efficiency. However, we couldn’t notice a big difference at the gas pump. What we did notice, though, was more noise with the sunroof open, so this model might not be the best if you have and use a sunroof.

But the Yakima Skybox NX design is one of the best for maximizing space, especially if you have more than just skis to cart around. We could place several large duffel bags and totes inside, which wouldn’t be possible on other models.

While the latches are secure when clicked, it sometimes takes a few tries (especially with a full load) for the latches to click into place. But when it’s in, it’s in. Just make sure you have a proper latch to save the box flying open when it picks up speed (we’re speaking from experience here).

The spacious and functional Thule Force XT ($580-750) comes in four sizes. This build can haul a huge quantity of bulky gear and still handle off-road adventures or winter trips to the local ski mountain. The large curved shape delivers enough room to store scads of gear and is high enough to fit awkwardly shaped objects, and the relatively light weight makes for easy installation and removal.

That shape does come at the cost of streamlining, which means your gas mileage may take a hit. Also, while it does come with a locking system, they feel oddly flimsy, so we’d recommend using them with a light touch.

Ultimately, the silhouette’s generous height and simple installation make the Thule Force XT a solid choice, especially if you’re determined to get a Thule box without paying through the nose. But be sure not to force the locking mechanism and be ready to make a few more pit stops to fill up on gas.

In Pelican fashion, the streamlined build is weatherproof to protect valuable cargo from apparel, gear, and hunting equipment to tools and dry food. The body is made of rotomolded plastic, which is lightweight, shock-absorbent, and blocks ultraviolet light.

With hardy construction, the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case’s steel latches are e-coated with a corrosion-resistant finish. The lid has a rubber gasket, but these are not submergible. These cargo cases are also not on par with the crushproofness and watertightness of the extremely rugged Pelican Protector lineup, but if you’re looking for a Pelican at a decent price, this is a solid option.

Steve Andrews has been adventuring in vehicles for 25 years. His main chariot has been alive almost as long: a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. As a go-anywhere 4×4, it can handle almost anything underneath it, taking Steve on adventures all around North America. With a growing family and a dog, though, more space was essential. So he set out to find the best rooftop cargo box to pack all the essentials for a family of four (and a dog) to join the journey while still allowing for space inside.

GearJunkie Managing Editor Billy Brown has taken his Subaru Outback across the western United States, living in the back for weeks at a time. He added his insights into what makes a cargo box worth buying and which boxes will serve what kinds of travellers.

Our Testing Process

Steve’s 4Runner is an ideal vehicle to test out rooftop cargo boxes. Being an older V8 vehicle, gas mileage is a large concern for attaching any extra accessories to a vehicle. So Steve set out a baseline for 50 miles on the highway and measured the gas consumption without any boxes compared to the boxes on top. In addition, since the vehicle has a higher roof, putting stuff in and out of the box is a bit more difficult than say, a Honda Civic.

To further add to that, Steve enlisted help from a tech-savvy, gadget-loving friend who has the latest Tesla model Y, where battery consumption can be measured by the minute. Combining this data allowed us to measure the efficiency of these boxes without having to trust the manufacturer’s word for it.

Additionally, we tested how easy or difficult it was to install these boxes. Can it be done single-handedly, or do you need help from a friend (or several friends)? Is the latching system secure? How easy or difficult is it to open the box with a bunch of gear in the other hand? And when it’s time to close it shut, do you need to fidget the handle to make sure it’s closed or is it one simple maneuver?

Then, we paid close attention to how secure the box was on the roof while driving. The last thing you’d want is any vibration or deafening noise to scare others around you. So, after ensuring we installed it correctly, we checked the box at speed with the windows and sunroof open to see how kind it was to those around us. 

Our Rooftop Cargo Box Rating System

Each cargo box in this guide was tested and scored in four main categories: Volume, Ease of Use, Security, and Value.

Value considers how well a cargo box performs for its price, factoring in capacity, durability, weight range, and price. A budget-friendly option can score high here if it delivers strong performance for the cost.

Volume is pretty straightforward. We looked at how many cubic feet each box would hold. In addition, we evaluated the shape of the boxes and whether or not they would accommodate large or unusually-shaped objects. If boxes had the same volume but one could fit larger duffels or skis more easily, that box would get a higher rating.

Ease of Use factored in how easy a box was to install and remove, how easy it was to load and unload gear, and how reliable the locking mechanism was. We also considered some comfort features, such as lined interiors, whether a box opened on both sides, and perks like interior lighting.

Security considers whether or not a box will keep your gear safe. If the box had a sturdy shell and a reliable locking mechanism, it received a higher score. If, during testing, a lock was difficult to use or unreliable (or nonexistent), the score took a hit.

Value considers how well a cargo box performs for its price. We consider all the factors above, take in added features, and add a bit of subjective opinion. A budget-friendly option can score low here if it delivers a weak performance for the cost, and an expensive version can have a higher rating if we feel that it’s worth the price.

The overall score is not a simple average of these categories. Instead, it reflects our editorial judgment based on the complete user experience. That means a less secure cargo box with extremely high volume can still score high, while a cargo box that scores high for value might rank lower if it’s difficult to use.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Rooftop Cargo Box

Roof Length Compatibility

It’s key to make sure the box can seamlessly pair with your vehicle’s roof and rack, especially if you have a top-hinged trunk. First, position the front crossbar as far forward as possible (some are not adjustable). Then, open the hatch and measure from the back hatch to the center of the vehicle’s front crossbar.

That distance needs to exceed the hatch clearance of a cargo box, which is listed on the manufacturer’s website. You’ll also want to be sure the length doesn’t hinder visibility up front or hit any antennas.

Rack Setup

If you’ve never owned a rooftop setup, this is rack 101. The mount is a component that runs lengthwise (front to back) and attaches to the top of your vehicle. Generally, vehicles come with factory mounts like raised rails, tracks, or fixed points.

If you’re working with a bare roof, you can permanently mount a rack or opt for a setup that’s compatible with the door jamb. Two crossbars or load bars sit perpendicular to the roof and are attached to the mount via four compatible towers. Crossbars vary in size and shape.

Each cargo box is compatible with specific crossbars, so make sure those crossbars work with your vehicle and mount or if an adapter is required.

Carrying Purpose and Capacity

Before you start shopping for a rooftop cargo box, take a look at your gear. What do you need and intend to carry on trips? Shorter or packable items like camp chairs or sleeping bags generally fit well in rooftop cargo boxes.

Lengthier items like skis, paddles, golf clubs, and strollers will require a longer box like the Yakima Skybox Carbonite — make sure the box’s internal dimensions fit the length of your equipment.

Read the width and height of each box to help conceptualize the overall volume. Boxes also list the gear capacity in cubic feet (or inches or liters). The more people in your group, the more space you’ll need for each individual’s gear.

Weight

There are two weight factors to take into account: the cargo box weight and the weight capacity of the box. The cargo boxes listed here range from 20 to 66 pounds without any cargo. The majority of these carriers safely hold a weight capacity of up to 165 pounds, but others are lower, around 110 or even 50 pounds.

Don’t sacrifice the cost for a less structural cargo box if you need to transport heavier items. Your heftiest cargo, like a loaded cooler, is easier and safer to store inside the vehicle.

Check with each box manufacturer for a specific box’s weight limits. Likewise, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended maximum load. You’ll need to subtract the weight of the box, aftermarket towers, and crossbars, as well as the maximum weight of the cargo stored inside the box.

Materials

Cargo boxes are built with durable plastic, and a handful have additional reinforcements, such as the steel along the base of the Thule Vector. Others are coated with an additional finish for extra durability and weather resistance. For example, the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case has a corrosion-resistant coat.

The hardware, like the latches and lock systems, varies in quality, which is reflected in the price. Overall, the size and materials influence the box’s weight, too.

Water Resistance

Most rooftop cargo box designs are extremely weather-resistant, thanks to a waterproof shell and weather sealing, so they’ll generally do a great job of blocking snow and rain. Some even feature a liner for water resistance, like the integrated rubber gasket of the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case.

However, none of these cargo boxes claim to be completely waterproof. We recommend you store any water-sensitive, precious cargo in a dry bag or inside the rig.

Extra Features

A handful of the top-shelf designs have extra features for comfort, utility, and ease of use. For instance, we appreciate the interior LED lights of the Thule Vector, as well as its long handle strap.

Installation and Ease of Use

Installing a rooftop cargo box can vary from model to model, but there are a few general steps and tips to ensure a smooth setup. First, always start by carefully reading the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Let’s face it — cargo boxes are pricey. Depending on the box, you can spend anywhere from $200 to $300 for a no-frills cargo carrier to well over $1,000 for a secure, aerodynamic spaceship-looking roof pod. More affordable options will leave more money in your bank account but may leave you missing some options. On the other hand, the higher-end cargo boxes may have you shelling out money for perks you don’t need. Here are some options in different price ranges to help you decide what features you are (and aren’t) willing to pay for.

Budget

If all you need is some extra storage space, you can get by with something like the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case ($300-450). Even though it’s half the price of some of the other items on our list, the weatherproof boxes come in four sizes and are made with tough rotomolded plastic and corrosion-resistant steel latches. You won’t be able to fit a pair of skis in these, and they don’t offer fancy details like dual-side opening and an interior light, but if you simply want to add a few more square feet of storage, this is a budget-friendly option.

Mid-Tier

For $500-$1,500, you’ll find bigger storage options, more streamlined, aerodynamic exteriors and more convenience than you might from a budget cargo box. For instance, the Thule Motion 3 XL ($999) offers one-handed access for quick loading, an aerodynamic profile, and a cool strap that lets you pull it shut from the ground.

Premium

Going over $1,500 puts you in the luxury category here. The Thule Vector ($2,400) is a great example of what you get at this price range, with interior tie-down straps to keep things in place during transit, a felt-lined floor to prevent your gear from getting scratched, and an LED light integrated into the lid that lets you see the box’s contents at night. Do you need all these features? Probably not. But are they convenient if you’ve got the dough? Absolutely.

Are rooftop cargo boxes universal?

Rooftop cargo boxes are not all created equal. The designs vary by weight, dimensions, gear capacity, and rigidity. You’ll need to consider what type of gear you need to haul as well as your vehicle length and roof capacity.

The best rooftop cargo box will fit well with adequate hatch clearance. Also, note certain cargo boxes are compatible with specific crossbar or load bar models, shapes, and size ranges. Be sure to get the correct setup for your vehicle.

Can a rooftop cargo box be too big?

A larger rooftop cargo box might not be the best choice for your vehicle and purpose. If a box length exceeds the rooftop clearance, it can hinder the hatchback when it swings up, or it can potentially hang over the roof in the front, impeding windshield visibility.

How do you pack a rooftop cargo box?

Place the heaviest and the majority of the cargo in the center of the box and the lightest items toward the nose and tail. Use tiedown straps, which are included in some designs, to secure loose goods if the box isn’t full.

Though many cargo boxes are weatherproof, most manufacturers suggest putting electronics and valuables in a dry bag for extra protection.

Can you drive with an empty rooftop cargo box?

Without additional weight, empty cargo boxes can get slightly jostled around by the wind, which could cause audible drag. If you don’t mind the potential noise, then it’s technically fine to drive with an empty rooftop cargo box. That said, the lifespan of the box will be extended if you store it safely away from the elements between long periods of nonuse.

Also, removing the cargo box could lead to greater fuel economy in the long haul. But for weekend warriors who commute 20 minutes to work several days a week, the repeated mount time might not be worthwhile, especially in a mild climate.

How should you store your rooftop cargo box?

When your rooftop cargo box isn’t mounted on your vehicle, it’s good to store it in a cool, dry indoor space like a garage, attic, or basement. It’s ideal to keep it out of direct sunlight and extremely hot or cold temperatures.

You can set the box flat on the ground — or atop a couple of 2x4s — or rig it to hang on a wall via the base side.

Starting January 2026, REI Co-op members can once again book travel packages through the outdoor retailer — if not quite the way they used to.

REI members had long booked outdoor trips through the company’s Experiences program, which offered both international travel and day tours hosted by full-time employees or local, part-time guides. Many longtime customers were surprised when REI ended that program in January after offering it for 40 years, laying off hundreds of workers in the process.

“It was a beloved part of our business,” Megan Behrbaum, manager of REI communications, told GearJunkie. “But running those type of operations was expensive and unsustainable. That said, when we made that exit, we made a promise to really look at what adventure travel could look like for our members in the future.”

This summer, REI conducted a survey of members, who said they were still interested in booking such trips through the retailer. That apparently led to today’s announcement: REI will once again sell “adventure travel” trips. But now they’ll be offered through a partnership with Intrepid Travel, a tour operator focused on small group trips with a focus on connecting to local communities.

REI members will receive discounts on the travel packages, as well as recommended gear lists to get prepared. The partnership debuts in January with about 75 options, most of which focus on “bucket list” destinations in the U.S. and abroad.

REI x Intrepid Travel: How It Works

REI members can book these discounted trips through REI.com/travel, though it’s currently just a landing page with a video and some highlighted trips.

By January, members will be able to peruse two “collections” of adventure travel trips. The first is called REI Exclusive, and includes trips that weren’t previously available through Intrepid, but are designed to appeal to REI members.

At the moment, this collection includes 25 trips ranging from 3 to 14 days. They’ll take travelers to Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Nepal, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Tanzania, and “iconic natural places in the United States,” REI said.

“Each adventure — from alpine hikes and multi-sport adventures to women-led expeditions and wildlife encounters — is guided by Intrepid’s local experts,” the retailer said in a press release.

The second collection is called REI Recommended. These are trips that were already available through Intrepid, but handpicked by REI leaders looking for options that would “resonate with members,” Behrbaum said. Members will find about 50 of these trips, spanning 32 countries on six continents.

It’s worth noting that these trips will be sold entirely online — not in stores, as was possible through the Experiences program. All of the actual trips are led by Intrepid Travel employees and guides.

No Local Trips, So Far

One of the main benefits of the Experiences program was connecting REI members to local outdoor destinations. The trips didn’t just take members to popular destinations like Yosemite National Park, but also to nearby opportunities for hiking, rafting, or climbing.

That isn’t the case with the new partnership — at least not yet.

“There’s nothing to announce yet with regard to local programs,” Behrbaum said. “We will continue to listen to members to understand where they want to go.”

Although anyone will be able to book Intrepid Travel trips through REI starting in January, only members will receive discounts. That includes a 15% discount on the Exclusive trips. Members who buy one of the Recommended trips will receive a 20% off coupon to use toward a future REI gear and apparel purchase.

REI also hopes that customers purchasing the trips will buy their gear through the retailer. The travel itineraries will include curated packing lists informed by REI’s experts, and the co-op will also sell Intrepid travel books to help guests learn about destinations around the world.

This partnership will create a handful of new corporate jobs at REI headquarters, but REI stores won’t likely see new positions through this partnership. The first trips scheduled through REI will depart in June and July of next year.

Sure, Montana has long been known for its impressive dinosaur fossils, but did you know that you can fish for a living, breathing dinosaur in two of the state’s renowned rivers?

It may sound like science fiction, but the mysterious paddlefish’s first relatives appeared on our planet roughly 125 million years ago. These massive trophy fish weigh in at an average of 60 pounds and often measure at a whopping 5 feet long. Catching them requires skill, patience, a state-issued permit, and a bit of luck, but it’s well worth it for the avid angler who wants one heck of a campfire story.

Once you’ve motored across the Dinosaur Trail in the eastern expanse of the Treasure State, seeing triceratops fossils in Malta and Maiasaura skulls in Choteau, leave Montana’s sprawling prairies behind in favor of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, the only two waterways where you can (with a permit) snag a paddlefish for your memory book.

How Do You Catch a Paddlefish?

After you’ve nabbed a coveted permit and read through the state regulations for the date windows and locations where you can angle for these prehistoric fish, you’ll want to brush up on your snagging.

Unlike fly fishing or the tried-and-true method of simply casting a line, paddlefish are typically caught using a technique known as snagging. Rather than luring these paddle-snouted dinosaurs in with bait, a fisher will cast a line, jerk the pole, and drag their hook through the water.

The hook glides through the watery depths and can eventually snag the fish, which is when the angler would reel it in and revel in their trophy catch. After catching a paddlefish, it can be released back on select days, or harvested, tagged, and reported to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Can You Hire a Guide to Catch Paddlefish?

We get it. Maybe you don’t want to purchase a bunch of specialty snagging equipment, or you’d rather leave the logistics and planning to someone else, so you can thoroughly enjoy your time on the water. Either way, you can hire an expert guiding service when you’re angling for paddlefish.

First, be sure to nab an active tag, so that you know your approved time window and location for fishing. Then head to Reel Therapy Charter Fishing to book an excursion. The company’s main base is on Fort Peck Lake, but they do book special charters during the short paddlefish season.

Where Can You Catch a Paddlefish?

There are four different seasons and tags that correspond to sections of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers where you can angle for paddlefish. All paddlefish harvested in the entire state of Montana must be reported to FWP. Below, we’ll get into each of the locations and suggest a few worthy side excursions, for when you’re not busy boating.

Upper Missouri River: Fort Peck Dam Upstream to Fort Benton

(White Harvest Tag — May 1 to June 15)

White harvest tags are issued through a lottery system, and the number of permits issued in a given year can vary, due to sustainable population management. In a typical year, applications must be received by early April to participate in the drawing. If you don’t get lucky with a harvesting permit, you’ll be issued a catch-and-release–only license for the Upper Missouri River, so you don’t have to botch your plans.

When you aren’t trying to snag your trophy fish, be sure to check out the Fort Peck Interpretive Center, a stop on the Montana Dinosaur Trail. The museum’s main attraction is “Peck’s Rex,” one of the most complete T. rex fossils ever discovered — there is both a full-size skeleton cast and a life-size replica of the dinosaur. Other exhibits highlight the construction of Fort Peck Dam, one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world, and the area’s fish and wildlife.

Yellowstone River: Tongue River Confluence to Sullivan Creek Confluence and Glendive Black Bridge to North Dakota

(Yellow Harvest Tag — May 15 to June 15)

Unlike the aforementioned white tags, Yellowstone River yellow tags are sold over the counter at FWP regional offices, not via online lottery. Because the yellow tag fishery is managed under a shared harvest with the Missouri River green tag program, the annual harvest will not exceed 1,000 paddlefish.

Avid anglers are also strongly encouraged to monitor the stream flow at the USGS Sidney Bridge and USGS Miles City stream gages, to be sure they choose the best times and locations to snag a fish.

Spend a few extra days in the area and bring your binoculars to the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which is a critical stopover point for thousands of migratory birds each year. Conversely, you could indulge your adventurous side at Makoshika State Park, Montana’s largest, and another Montana Dino Trail stop. Here, saunter through colorful badlands, see dinosaur fossils, and explore the area’s prehistoric past before the night skies put on a truly epic show.

Missouri River: Downstream of Fort Peck Dam to North Dakota

(Green Harvest Tag — May 15 to June 15)

As we mentioned before, the Missouri River green tag fishery is managed under a shared harvest system with the Yellowstone River yellow tag program, and as such, the annual harvest will not exceed 1,000 paddlefish. Just like with the yellow tags, green harvest tags are sold over the counter at FWP regional offices, not online.

Fishermen are encouraged to monitor the reported stream flow at USGS Wolf Point and USGS Culbertson stream gages, as large numbers of paddlefish are not typically available in the Missouri River unless flows are greater than 15,000 cfs.

To get a break from fishing and river life, head over to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and spend an afternoon imagining what it was like when Lewis and Clark traversed this rugged land. Enjoy the rest of your downtime by immersing yourself in local culture and catching a show at the historic Fort Peck Theatre, which launches its performance season each summer after Memorial Day.

Fort Peck Dredge Cut: Archery-Only Season

(Blue Harvest Tag — July 1 to August 31)

If you’re interested in harvesting an elusive paddlefish via bow-and-arrow techniques, this is the permit to get. No snagging is allowed during this season. These special tags can be purchased just about anywhere — over the counter at FWP offices, at Montana fishing license vendors, or online. There’s not a limit on blue tags sold, but in an ordinary year, about 200 tags are sold, and roughly 20 to 50 fish are actually harvested via archery.

After a day at the dredge, sate your hunger with hearty American fare at The Gateway restaurant in Fort Peck or head to nearby Glasgow, a small town officially designated as “the middle of nowhere” in the U.S.

Stop by the Valley County Pioneer Museum to learn about the history of Glasgow, including its deep ties to the railroad. Then, grab a bite downtown and pop into the eclectic local shops along the way. Don’t forget to snap a picture with the iconic “Middle of Nowhere” sign before leaving town.
