While getting stuck in muck is rare — it does occasionally happen. An experienced hiker found that out the hard way in Arches National Park on Sunday, when a normal day on the trail turned into a scary ordeal.

Austin Dirks, 33, was walking through the upper end of the park’s Courthouse Wash area just before sunrise when his left leg broke through what he assumed was solid ground. He was able to remove his leg, only to step more firmly onto the right leg, which felt like he “had stepped into concrete,” according to an interview with local news station Fox 13.

Once he realized he couldn’t escape on his own, Dirks used a Garmin GPS device to call for help. Grand County Search and Rescue arrived on scene and spent several hours trying to free him. They used ladders, boards, and shovels to create a safe path to Dirks, and eventually pulled him out of the dangerous predicament.

It’s a good thing, too, because the primary danger to Dirks wasn’t slipping all the way into the muck — that doesn’t really happen with quicksand. But if he’d been stuck there overnight, he would face the risk of hypothermia from the cold.

“Before this trip, I honestly thought quicksand was more of a folklore or a legend,” Dirks told Fox 13 in the below interview.

Quicksand: Not Like the Movies

In posts on Facebook and Reddit, Dirks explained what happened to him in detail. He described himself as a “fit” and experienced backpacker who had completed the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, and half of the Continental Divide Trail.

“I’ve been bogged down in mud and sand countless times, but never like what happened today,” he wrote in a lengthy Reddit post.

Dirks described how the “quicksand” wasn’t really like sand at all. It’s more like a sticky mud that kept his leg trapped, no matter how much Dirks tried to escape.

“After thirty minutes of digging and flailing, I had made no progress at all. My fingers were numb,” he wrote. “The water kept moving around my leg, cold as ice. I was exhausted and I made the decision I hoped I would never have to make. I called for help.”

The primary danger was not sinking in further, but being unable to escape the weather, which was in the 20s when he became stuck, Dirks wrote on Facebook. He also repeatedly thanked the rescuers, who he credits with saving his life.

“The National Park Service, Grand County Search and Rescue, EMS and the Garmin dispatchers did everything right,” Dirks wrote on Reddit. “Without them I would have been stuck there until nightfall. My family wouldn’t have called it in until I was overdue at 6 p.m. I would not have been found by chance. I owe them more than thanks.”

Quicksand: It Does Happen

Although incredibly rare, quicksand does pose a danger to hikers. In Dec. 2024, a lone hiker became stuck in the mud under a West Virginia bridge, and it took a “vertical rescue team” to safely retrieve him. At other times, “quicksand” is used to make “mud races” more challenging.

Though actual quicksand is extremely rare, it is sometimes possible to escape without help. Certain methods of body movement can help trapped hikers squirm out of the sticky mud, according to the BBC.

A Utah father is facing six first-degree felony charges after a hike in Big Cottonwood Canyon left his three children in critical condition. Authorities released a detailed timeline that identifies weather exposure, delayed retreat, and medical emergencies among the primary factors in the case.

The Hike

In early October, Micah Zephan Smith began the Broads Fork Trail hike with his children, ages 8, 4, and 2. The trail is a steep and strenuous route in Big Cottonwood Canyon that gains more than 2,000 feet in under 3 miles and is rated hard on most hiking platforms due to its sustained climb and rocky upper sections. Early winter conditions further increase the difficulty, with snow, ice, and low visibility creating hazards for hikers, especially in exposed terrain.

The family started late in the morning. Court records identify a steady drop in temperature and increasing precipitation during the ascent.

Family members urged Smith to turn around through text messages earlier in the day. The messages referenced incoming weather and concerns for the children’s safety.

Deteriorating Conditions

Precipitation increased as the family climbed. Snow and freezing rain formed on the upper trail. Visibility decreased. A rapid shift in the weather created hazardous footing.

During the descent, the 2-year-old fell and lost consciousness, and the 4-year-old displayed signs of severe hypothermia. Smith sheltered the children under a rock outcrop when daylight diminished.

Search and Rescue

The family’s failure to return triggered an overnight search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies. Weather limited the use of helicopters and slowed ground response.

At sunrise, teams found Smith walking alone on the trail. The children were located soon after and airlifted for medical care.

Medical Findings

The 4-year-old arrived without a pulse and required CPR, intubation, and emergency surgery after suffering a stroke. The 2-year-old was also unconscious and severely hypothermic. The 8-year-old was treated for exposure.

Digital Evidence

Investigators recovered video from Smith’s phone that documented the family’s position and the worsening weather. Messages on the device showed repeated warnings about the storm.

Current Charges

Smith is charged with three counts of child torture and three counts of aggravated child abuse. All six charges are classified as first-degree felonies. He remains in custody without bail while the case proceeds.

The Spot 400-R ($65) has been around for years and has gone through good and bad iterations. But with the most recent refresh, Black Diamond gave us a small, powerful, and effective headlamp that makes it the best all-around headlamp. We’ve had this model in testing for 2 years now, and it’s become my go-to favorite. It’s also proven itself very durable and capable in rough weather.

At 400 lumens max output, the spotlight clearly lights objects out to 100 m. While there are much more powerful headlamps on the market (and a few listed here), this is plenty of power for the vast majority of uses.

For most users, the medium and low settings, which provide phenomenal runtimes of up to 225 hours on low (4 hours on high), provide plenty of light for hiking or doing camp chores.

The user interface of this light is wonderfully simple and intuitive. It has two buttons. One turns it on and off. The other scrolls through settings of spot, proximity, red, and strobe. Hold the button to dim or brighten. It’s a simple, easy-to-learn method that works even with thin gloves.

The light is wonderfully small, weighing just 2.6 ounces. This makes it a great choice for stowing in a backpack. Finally, it recharges through a common micro-USB charging port, so there’s no need to pack a special cord to recharge this lamp in the field or in your vehicle.

While all these specs are great, real-world testing proved the Spot 400-R is up to a lot of jobs. I used it on a Nebraska turkey hunt during which I camped for a week, and the light shone bright for the entire time. And it was the best-performing small headlamp of more than 20 tested in our longevity test!

Initially turned on high, it ran for more than 24 hours before going into a dim but usable “limp mode.” In doing so, it competed with much larger, more expensive headlamps and left its weight-class competitors in the dust.

Read Review: Simple, Comfy Headlamp That Gets the Job Done: BioLite Range Review

The BioLite Range 500 ($70) is the first BioLite headlamp I’ve really loved. Sure, they’ve all been comfortable and good up to this point, but the Range 500 finally offers all the utility needed for hiking, camping, and even hunting. It has a lot of power at maximum output, throwing 500 lumens up to 100 meters in spotlight mode. It also has a very pleasant floodlight and excellent red light with enough power to hike at night while preserving night vision.

The Range 500 also has a serviceably long battery life. In specs, it will burn for 200 hours on low, or six hours on high. However, in testing, I found it difficult to keep the light on its low setting. It tended to adjust to a brighter setting on its own after a period of wear. The result was that I generally killed the battery after three mornings and evenings of use while hunting elk in Colorado. That equates to about seven or eight hours of use, which is entirely acceptable for most headlamp use.

On a very positive note, it charges really fast! Just eight minutes on a charger is enough to add an hour of lighting, and in practice, I found the headlamp would recharge fully in less than an hour.

This is also one of the most comfortable headlamps I’ve worn, period. The wide band and light design make it an absolute dream. It pretty much disappears on the head and is super stable even when moving fast, jostling, or running.

For those who prioritize comfort and want an excellent all-around headlamp for anything from hiking and camping to home repairs, the BioLite Range 500 is a top choice at a reasonable price.

The Petzl Tikkina headlamp ($25) is just that — a headlamp. It’s not intensely bright, nor does it have a red light. But for $25, you get a decent headlamp that runs on batteries.

You can also purchase 1,250mAh CORE rechargeable batteries for this lamp if you’re looking to be more eco-conscious.

The Tikkina is fairly lightweight, and it has a high runtime in low-light mode. It offers a low, medium, and bright type of light that easily adjusts via one button.

This headlamp easily fits into our KISS model of efficiency while managing to be at (or under) $20. The only downside is it doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery.

As with most budget lights, you’ll wind up spending more money over time as you buy more and more batteries. But for those looking to avoid a big hit to the wallet, it’ll get the job done on a $20 bill.

This well-loved and super-light headlamp is a solid option for those sick of bulky headbands and heavy lights. At 1.2 ounces, the Petzl Bindi ($44) is crazy minimal. And it still boasts a fair runtime and decent lumens in comparison to everything else on this list.

The adjustable drawstring band is minimalistic, and it can easily go over your head, hat, or hood. It boasts a 4.7-star rating on Amazon, and the fast adjustment is a huge bonus. Folks love this for search and rescue, running, camping, and anything where a minimal approach is needed. The tilt is highly adjustable, and the cord itself is reflective for safety.

Really, this is a well-loved headlamp at a decent price with a use-case scenario that covers most outdoors people.

Now, for the negatives. The Bindi, while a functional headlamp, is not powerful. At 200 lumens, it has just enough light to comfortably walk on a rough trail. It’ll do the job around camp, but just barely. And with a very small battery, you only get two hours of runtime at 200 lumens. On low, the Bindi’s lighting is very minimal.

So this one is a good choice for those who value lightweight over all else. It provides a minimal level of lighting. So for ultralight backpackers who only need a few minutes of lighting a day, it’s a great way to save weight. Many campers and hikers, though, will want a more substantial light.

When it comes to big, powerful, long-running, and durable, it’s hard to top the Fenix HM75R ($220). This is a flashlight for people who need a lot of light, a long run time, and reliability when there is no room for error. It rates very highly and for those who need a lot of light in difficult conditions, it’s an excellent choice.

The Fenix HM75R has just two downsides: weight and cost. But if those factors are not of concern, this is one of the best headlamps we’ve tested yet. Big and burly, the HM75R kicks out a searing 1,600 lumens of very clear white light on its highest bright white setting. And on its low white setting, it can run for an incredible 234 hours.

But it has much more to offer. A second LED produces a warmer white light, which allows for faithful color rendering. And maybe the best feature of all, the red light setting is both super powerful and variable, lighting up objects up to 45 feet away on its highest setting.

For people who need to maintain night vision while using a headlamp, this is clutch! An example would be working on the deck of a boat at night, where both night vision afar and close, detailed vision are key.

For hard-use, serious scenarios like search and rescue or industrial needs, the HM75R is a powerful, versatile solution. It’s overkill for most recreational users. It comes at a hefty cost and weighs a lot, but for those who need its capabilities, it’s worth every penny and gram.

The Black Diamond Distance 1500 ($200) is a powerful headlamp with a very easy-to-change magnetic battery pack attachment system. It offers an unwavering, clear light beam that varies from up to 1,500 lumens on high (for 100 minutes) or a very serviceable 300 lumens on low for 8 hours.

Our tester Lucy Haines used the Distance 1500 during her podium finish of the Leadville 100 ultramarathon, where it kept her moving from sunset until she crossed the finish line at 3 a.m. She loved the “idiotproof battery situation” that allowed her to switch batteries in less than 10 seconds while moving through aid stations.

Haines also loved the ability to access the very bright, 1,500-lumen “boost” mode with a simple tap to the side of the light. The 10-second boost mode allows runners to power up the light briefly to navigate tricky sections of trail or verify whether that weird object is real or just a hallucination.

Packing an IP68 rating, an easy user interface even with gloved hands, and solid overall performance, the Coast WPH30R is a great all-around headlamp. But where it really shines is in its durability and easy-to-use simplicity. GearJunkie editor Sean McCoy tested Coast WPH30R during a long autumn of elk and deer hunting in Colorado.

Overall, Sean is very impressed with the user interface. “It was my go-to headlamp during early mornings in camp and late nights on the trail. I used it in rain, snow, and cold conditions. And through it all, I really appreciated the wonderful simplicity of the single button. Just press it once and the light turns on. Press it again to cycle through modes. It’s that simple.”

And accessing a red light, which is useful both in camp and while hiking to and from hunting spots, is super easy with a double tap. While it is a little heavy, the WPH30R is really tough. It can handle water submersion up to 5 meters, which is way beyond most headlamps. That’s due to screw-down closures fitted with O-rings. These protect both the removable ZX850 rechargeable battery (included) and in-light USB-C charging port.

This light is simple enough to use with gloved hands. The on/off/adjust button is large and easy to find on the side of the light. So when it’s cold, this light is a dream. It’s also nice for use when wet, or with dirty or oily hands.

The large, tactile button is easy to find, regardless. This isn’t the most powerful light on the list, but the 1,000 lumens is perfectly useful for most hiking, camping, hunting, or other general needs.

To save battery, you can use the light on low-power flood mode, which puts out 54 lumens for up to 23 hours. When you need more distance throw, the combined spot and flood mode kicks light out to a respectable 149 meters. Again, not top numbers, but entirely solid for most uses.

Overall, the Coast WPH30R works great and hits a good price. For most outdoor activities, this is a nice, easy-to-use headlamp with a good rechargeable battery system.

The BioLite Dash 450 ($60) is a running-centric headlamp. It has a red flashing safety light on the back, is very comfortable to wear while running, and it’s USB-C rechargeable. While it’s not as powerful or long-lasting as the headlamps in Black Diamond’s Distance line, it’s significantly less expensive. It makes for a reliable headlamp for any runner to grab on their way out the door for early morning or evening runs around town. 

In terms of lighting, the Dash can emit a concentrated 325 lumens in a focused beam or 450 lumens in flood mode. The flood mode is more than adequate while running on gravel roads, well-maintained fire roads, or on the street. Mode switching is controlled by one button that allows you to cycle through spot, flood, and red flood modes in three different power levels.

Additionally, the rear red safety lights are controlled with a button on the top of the rear battery pack. These buttons are a bit tricky to operate with gloves on, and we needed some visual confirmation that the rear light was working (taking the headlamp off and checking) during initial testing.

This light has a 3-hour runtime on its highest setting, so ultrarunners should look to a headlamp like the BD Distance 1500, as it will run for 8 hours at 300 lumens and has the option to swap out batteries. Folks looking to get in a few hours after work will find the Dash’s runtime more than sufficient.

Comfort and overall wearability are where this headlamp really shines (pun intended). The front light is low profile, curved, and sits flush against the forehead. Once the straps are properly adjusted, we can’t get it to move or bounce. Headlamps from Fennix and BD may have more power, but with the battery and headlamp housing at the front, none ride as securely as the Dash 450.

While we’ll hang on to our more powerful lights for long-distance runs, backpacking, or complicated nighttime navigation, this is a perfect headlamp to keep charged by the door for after-work runs. Runners who get annoyed by sloshing water bottles, jingling keys, and earbuds that fall out will find some respite with the comfortable, set-it-and-forget-it BioLite Dash 450.

The Petzl Swift RL ($130) is a USB-C rechargeable headlamp with a comfortable strap system. It’s tooled for running, climbing, and mountaineering. With a max output of 1,100 lumens, it’s ripe for comparison with the Black Diamond Distance LT, which is similarly priced and has the same max lumen output but a different feature set and control layout. 

This headlamp has one button to turn it on and cycle through the different modes, which is fairly simple if you can remember what does what. That button is satisfyingly chunky and easy to operate with gloves. The downside is that it’s easier to hold down that button unintentionally, taking the headlamp out of lock mode and turning it on while stowed in a pack. This left one tester with a dead headlamp and a lot of climbing ahead of him (he climbed fast). For comparison, the BD Distance LT requires two buttons to be held in tandem to lock and unlock

At 1,100 lumens on the max setting and 275 on medium, the Swift is plenty bright, and the many settings (3 levels in reactive, 3 in standard, plus a red light) allow for fine-tuning brightness and battery life based on your situation. 

Reactive lighting has been a staple of the higher-end Petzl lights for a while now. This feature automatically dims the light as you get close to something (like a cliff face) and brightens back to the normal setting when you point the light off into the distance. Some folks like it, while other testers find it annoying as the brightness fluctuates a lot in activities like climbing. Like it or not, using the Swift in the reactive settings does extend the battery life. Like the Distance LT, you can purchase additional rechargeable batteries to swap out on extra-long missions. 

The Swift’s strap system is one of the best. The single strap splits into two in the back with two adjustment points. This design distributes tension more evenly across the back of your head and feels more comfortable than the more traditional single-strap design. 

Overall we feel like the 2 button control system of the BD Distance LT is easier to use and cycle through settings. The Distance LT doesn’t wear quite as comfortably, and if you like the reactive lighting, the Swift RL is the way to go.

The HM 50R V2 ($60) is a crazy powerful headlamp for its size. It weighs just 2.75 ounces yet punches out a whopping 700 lumens on turbo mode (400 on high). And it can run a long time even with its tiny battery (3 hours on high, or 48 hours on low).

The user experience is wonderfully simple. There is a single button on the side. It’s easy to find. Push it once to turn it on. Push again to increase power. Repeat for more. Push and hold for red. Push and long hold to lock. Easy peasy.

Thanks to its diminutive nature, our testers barely noticed this headlamp while testing. It fits great and is extremely comfortable.

The only negative, compared with the Black Diamond Spot 400-R, is that the Fenix died early during our runtime test, turning off after about 7 hours after being started on “high” mode. But in fairness, it shined bright during the test until it shut down. We’ve experienced great longevity in real-world applications so far.

Fenix gives us one exceptional headlamp in the HM 50R V2. For many people, especially those who want good color rendering, it should be high on the list.

The Distance LT 1100 ($120) is similar to its big brother, the Distance 1500, and after getting our hands on this smaller light and putting it to the test on some evening runs and nighttime bouldering sessions, we had to give it a nod. Like so many of the BD headlamps in this guide, it’s bright, easy to keep charged, and has a well-designed user interface. 

This light is designed for night running where stability is key, as a headlamp that bounces around will drive you crazy and make it more difficult to see. The Distance 1100 has a wide base and is fairly low profile for being so powerful.

If you need to adjust the angle of the beam, the light tilts separately from the battery, so most of the weight stays stable and snug against your forehead. We found this feature great for running and just about every other time we wore the Distance.

Operation is simple. Pressing the right button turns the light off and on, and holding it down adjusts the brightness, while the left button toggles between beam, flood, and colored light modes. The buttons are chunky enough to operate with gloves on.

On the side of the headlamp, a touch-sensitive button (not glove-friendly) lets you engage the “power tap” mode, which turns on both the flood and beam lights for a combined 1,100 lumens. This light runs at 600 lumens in the regular max power setting, so the tap is significant.

600 lumens feels plenty bright for running, and the power tap is useful when the trail splits and you need a bigger field of view to do a little route-finding. Hold down both buttons to lock the headlamp off, or you can even detach the light from the battery, so there is no way of draining it during storage.

The Distance 1100 is twice the price of our top pick, the BD Spot 400, and it doesn’t have the battery life of the Distance 1500 (though you can buy extra batteries from BD and swap out for a freshly charged battery on the go). For folks who don’t want the heft of the Distance 1500, but need more power than the Spot for running or climbing, the 1100 hits the Goldilocks zone.

The GearJunkie team has tested a huge variety of headlamps for countless miles in the woods and at campsites, from hunting to climbing peaks. Since 2013, we’ve tested approximately 200 headlamps across our team of editors. We polled our crew to determine their absolute favorite headlamps and why. Author and hunt and fish editor Nicole Qualtieri first published this guide in early 2021, and the selection included 9 of the best headlamps available online.

Additionally, GearJunkie Editor Sean McCoy now contributes most of the testing and hands-on evaluation. Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Headlamp

Headlamp Bulbs: LEDs

Long gone are the days of light bulbs. Modern headlamps almost universally use LEDs (light-emitting diodes). These small, powerful light sources use a tiny fraction of the energy of bulbs. Today, thanks to LEDs, headlamps produce incredibly bright light and run for many hours on rechargeable batteries.

But did you know that all LEDs are not created equal? Yep, LEDs are a rapidly evolving technology. And when you get a good headlamp, one component that makes a big difference is which LED the brand uses.

Some of the very best headlamps use CREE LEDs. Using premium components, manufacturers can enhance headlamp power and light qualities like color rendering and warmth. So, when you spend a little more on a quality headlamp, this is just one of the reasons.

Color Options

The standard LED color is white (we’ll go into some variations on this in the Color Rendering section below). But many headlamps also have a red LED (or other colors) light.

We consider the red mode on a headlamp to be almost mandatory. That’s because red light preserves your night vision much more than white light.

So, by using a red light while cooking, around the campsite, or even while walking on a trail, you will still be able to see much more of the surrounding landscape, especially under a full moon. Red light also won’t wake up your tentmate as easily if you need to read or get dressed in the dark. And it’s the best color when hanging out with a group as it won’t blind your friends.

Some headlamps also have green and blue LED lights. Blue light is useful for night fishing and for hunters who need to spot an animal’s blood. Blue light also is a good choice for reading maps in the dark, because the tone picks up red lines on the page.

Green lights are a helpful tool for hunting at night. The color is brighter than red, provides better contrast, and won’t startle animals.

Regardless of the color options, be sure to take a little time to learn your headlamp’s user interface so you can switch between them as needed.

Lumens (Brightness)

One of the most important components of a headlamp is how much light it produces. We measure this in lumens. Most headlamps have a low, medium, high, and sometimes “turbo” brightness setting, which users can manually adjust via buttons on the headlamp.

The higher the setting, the faster the battery depletes, so Turbo settings are often short-lived and regulated to preserve battery life. Some headlamps also have a dimming option that lets you gradually adjust the brightness level.

Our favorite headlamps range from about 400 to 1,500 lumens at their highest output. For nighttime adventures like trail running or uphill skiing, opt for a headlamp with a max output of at least 400 lumens, which can spotlight obstacles and wildlife.

LEDs with higher lumens are better for faster activities or spotting far-off objects. But while higher lumens mean more energy consumption, you can always run your battery in low mode, which we recommend if you have a long time afield between recharges. High-speed activities like cycling are best with at least 1,000 lumens of available lighting, and more is better. Faster activities also require a longer beam distance, which we outline below.

Beam Distance & Type

An increase in lumens usually helps boost the distance the light travels, but there’s not a direct correlation. For instance, the Black Diamond Spot 400-R has 400 lumens and a max output of 100 m. Other factors influence how far the illumination travels, such as the LED placement, diameter, and beam type.

Most headlamps have two types of beams. The floodlight is broadly diffused to the area closest to you. This mode conserves battery power while reaching your immediate periphery.

The spotlight is a tight, concentrated beam of light that exposes the environment farther away and with a narrower field of vision. This setting sometimes requires more battery power, and often people manually click between the floodlight and spotlight.

Some headlamps automatically adjust between the two based on the objects in front of you. The automatic mode switch also preserves the battery. Others may use reactive technology to sense how much light to project, again, preserving battery life.

The distance between each headlamp’s floodlight and the spotlight is unique. For example, the  BioLite Dash 450  has an LED light of 450 lumens that reaches 90 m. The Coast FL85R is 750 lumens and extends 70-200 m — more than the length of two football fields.

Light Settings

Headlamps typically have multiple light settings that the user controls manually. Those options include a spotlight, which is the headlamp’s maximum light output and illuminates the environment farther away. A lower output setting concentrates light closer to you.

Some headlamps have a technology that automatically adjusts the low and max output based on the objects in front of you, which saves battery power. A handful of designs also have a strobe mode, which is helpful for visibility in areas with high vehicle traffic.

Battery Type

When it comes to headlamps, we’re strong believers in rechargeable battery systems. However, they do have their downsides. Over the life of a headlamp, rechargeable batteries will gradually lose their ability to hold a charge. In our experience, it takes several years of regular use for most headlamps to become unserviceable, but it is worth considering when investing in higher-end headlamps.

There are circumstances where replaceable AAA or AA batteries make the most sense. For example, those running overnight ultramarathons may want to carry an extra set of batteries so they can quickly switch them without having to wait for a headlamp to recharge.

But for most users, a rechargeable battery is reliable, functional, and much more efficient and environmentally friendly. Not only do they produce less waste, but they also require much less energy to produce than disposable batteries and can run for up to 3,000 cycles without losing effectiveness.

You’ll see some headlamps offer both rechargeable batteries and the option for AAA battery functions. These are a great option for folks who want to be sustainable but also might need to rely on the speed of a conventional battery every once in a while.

Here’s a breakdown of common options:

• AA/AAA: Cheap and swappable anywhere, but expensive over time as they require replacement.
• Rechargeable Li-ion: Lighter, greener, longer lasting. Some require proprietary cables, which we penalize in this guide.
• 18650/21700 cells: These high-end rechargables are excellent and are found in a few headlamps. They tend to weigh more, but they are replaceable and swappable on the go.

Battery Life

One of the biggest differentiators between headlamps is battery life. The best headlamps have a long life between charges, with some able to run for days on end without recharging.

But a little education goes a long way when it comes to extending battery life. By using the lower power settings and red light, most headlamps will run for many hours.

Some of the best on this list will run for more than 200 hours on low between charges! But using high will suck battery fast. For example, the Petzl Bindi Ultralight Headlamp battery lasts 2 hours in high-output mode and 50 hours in low-output mode.

Before you head out, make sure you understand how to toggle between the modes in order to manage the headlamp’s battery power.

User Interface and Buttons

This is a sticking point for a few folks on the crew. One editor wanted a headlamp that could easily be used with gloves.

Some headlamps offer the ability for the user to program buttons and lighting on their own. As we said earlier, a few headlamps offer apps for a plethora of options.

But, for the great majority of headlamp users, that is really unnecessary and a time-consuming step. Our editors and testers all loved headlamps that were simple to use and didn’t require a steep learning curve.

It’s easy enough to take a few minutes to read the instructions and figure out how to use your headlamp. But for most headlamps, they’re intuitive enough to figure out right out of the box. Those are the headlamps that made our list this year — simply because they offer the least trouble.

Lockability

Most headlamps offer a lock button or switch that prevents them from turning on in your pack and wasting precious battery life (or starting a fire). If you plan to frequently store your headlamp in a bag or backpack, especially while hiking, lockability greatly improves reliability.

On this list, the Black Diamond Spot 400-r is a high-end headlamp with a well-made lock button. When you buy a headlamp, read the instructions to learn how to lock and unlock the light. It’s a valuable feature that will save you an unexpectedly dead headlamp when night falls.

Headband & Adaptability

Headlamps usually sit around the head against the forehead and hair. They typically include one front-facing LED attached to a stretchy elastic strap that’s wide, moisture-wicking, adjustable, and comfortable. The LED slides along the band and is removable, allowing the band to be washed.

There are uncommon headlamp designs, too. For instance, the LED light can be integrated into the band, like on the BioLite 330. Sometimes, a second strap crosses over the top of the head to support a heavier headlamp.

For minimalists, the Petzl Bindi Ultralight Headlamp is constructed with a thin, adjustable drawstring cord.

And other headlamps have a second light or the battery pack on the back of the strap. If you need to wear a hat or helmet, the headlamp will need to fit around that layer.

Headlamp Tilt

Some LED units are adjustable and click up and down to angle the light in an appropriate direction. This feature can be really nice in social settings when you’re trying not to blind another person or when reading a book.

It also reduces neck fatigue if you can angle the light down at the right angle to illuminate the trail without craning your neck. Just don’t be surprised if your baseball hat brim blocks the light, so pro tip; flip your baseball hat backward when wearing a headlamp at night to get the best performance.

Weight

For us, comfort and a lack of bounce are key. Headlamp comfort is influenced by the type of band, adjustability, overall weight, and personal preference.

We’ve found bounce can occur with bulky or cheaply constructed designs that are less streamlined and ergonomic. The weights of our favorite headlamps range from 1.2 to 7 ounces. But heavier headlamps usually need a third strap that goes over the top of your head to ensure comfort for the user.

Water Resistance

Some headlamps have an IPX or IP rating to show how resistant they are to water. IPX0 offers no barrier at all against precipitation, splashes, or sweat. IPX8 provides the greatest amount of protection against full submersion, like if you’re swimming with a headlamp on.

For instance, the Coast FL85R has an IPX4-rated construction, which is sweatproof but not fully waterproof. The Fenix HM 50R V2 has an IP68 rating, meaning it can function while completely submerged up to a meter.

Price & Value

Headlamps span a big price range — from $25 to $200. Quality choices can be found at both ends of the spectrum, and if you just need a headlamp to see around camp or keep in your car for emergencies, our budget pick will easily suffice.

If you want to run or climb at night and are willing to spend a little bit more, you get some pretty cool features like rechargeable batteries, reactive light settings, and enough power to blind anyone headed in your direction.

Budget

If your budget is sub-$50, the Petzl Tikkina ($25) is a capable little headlamp for tooling around camp or working under the hood or under the sink. It runs on AAA batteries and emits a respectable 250 lumens (when the batteries are fresh). Spend $60, and you can upgrade to the BioLite Dash 450, the least expensive headlamp with rechargeable batteries in our guide. It’s also really comfortable to wear while running.

Mid-Tier

Spending $60 to $100 broadens your choices by quite a lot, and almost every headlamp in this price tier has rechargeable batteries. Our top pick is the Black Diamond Spot 400-R ($65), a 400-lumen light with a USB-C port for charging.

If you’re hiking on trail or running along the road at night, it’s plenty bright. The Petzl Actik Core ($69) has a 130-hour runtime on its lowest setting and only weighs 2.6 ounces, so it’s a great option for backpacking.

Premium

$150 and up will get you a high-powered light cannon that attaches to your forehead. The $200 Black Diamond Distance 1500 takes the cake here, with a (you guessed it) maximum output of 1,500 lumens, an 8-hour runtime at the 300-lumen setting, and rechargeable batteries that can be swapped out mid-race — awesome for ultrarunners, but overkill for most folks. The Fenix HM75R ($220) is the brightest headlamp we’ve tested. With an IPX8 waterproof rating, it’s a great choice for professional applications.

Red Flags & Buyer Beware

There are literally thousands of headlamps on the market, especially on digital retail spaces like Amazon. While many are legit, be aware of things that seem too good to be true. They usually are. There are a few red flags to keep in mind when shopping for headlamps. These types of claims are often unverifiable and often untrue.

• Inflated lumen ratings — if a $30 headlamp claims 1,500 lumens, be skeptical.
• Ultra-long run times — often true only in ultra-low output modes as low as one lumen.

Read Review: Fenix PD36R Pro Review: Simply My Favorite Flashlight Yet

The Fenix PD36R Pro ($120) is the latest evolution of our favorite overall flashlight on the market. A slightly upgraded model of the also-great PD36R, the PD36R Pro has one big improvement, and that is the dual tail switches. The system works like this: One larger tail switch turns the light on and off.

The other toggles through the five brightness modes, or, if the light is off, activates the strobe function for self-defense. In the dark or with gloves, it’s still incredibly easy to manipulate the switches and get the desired output in seconds.

If you prefer the lighting control mounted on the body of the light, the standard PD36R is still available. But I suspect most users will love the upgraded PRO model.

Beyond user experience, the runtime is phenomenal. With the new PD36R PRO in Eco (30 lumens) mode, you can achieve a solid 42 hours of runtime. If runtime is your primary concern, the non-PRO version of this light has a much longer runtime, but lower overall output.

For casual users (occasional camping trips and short bursts of high-output modes), that should amount to months between charges. Our tester has gone more than 2 months without recharging this flashlight with regular usage.

Speaking of modes, the PD36R PRO ranges from a low-end 30 lumens to a searingly bright 2,800 lumens. At that 2,800-lumen turbo mode, you can easily see objects at 1,247 feet. That’s more than enough for most use cases for outdoor recreation. And impressively, the PD36R PRO can maintain that brightness for 3.5 hours.

With an IP68 waterproof rating, it can withstand being underwater for 30 minutes at up to 6.5 feet. It’s also dustproof and shock-resistant. One feature I love is how easily you can manipulate between tactical (and strobe-enabling) functions.

Beyond the specs, this is a perfect hand-size flashlight (5.74 inches long, 1.04 inches in diameter) with user-friendly functions. Turn it on and off at the large tail switch, press the smaller tail switch to adjust power, and check the LED near the USB-C charging port when turning the light on for a battery-level indication.

Overall, the PD36R PRO is the best flashlight on the market today.

This small, affordable flashlight is one of the best values in lighting. With a retail price of $50 (and usually available for about $30), the Acebeam TAC 2AA is powerful, reliable, and versatile. It’s the perfect flashlight to toss in your car, junk drawer, or backpack.

First, it produces a very bright, clear beam. At 1,600 lumens on turbo, it casts light up to 181 m. That is a very impressive performance for a light that’s about the size of a large pen. Dial that power down to medium, and it will run for 9.8 hours while producing a very useful 110 lumens. That’s enough light to navigate a house or campsite comfortably.

Next, this is a “dual-fuel” flashlight, meaning it runs on both an included USB-C rechargeable battery and any AA batteries you have around. In emergencies or long power outages, the ability to drop in AA batteries adds a lot of versatility while, in daily use, the rechargeable battery is much more efficient.

Finally, this light includes a couple of diffusers that add utility. Toss them over the end and you have a great signal light or lantern. It’s a little bonus that is so sweet for a budget light. Add in a deep pocket carry clip and a relatively easy user interface (that does take a little bit to learn), and you have a recipe for a super good deal.

Read Review: Olight Heard Our Complaints, And Its Latest Flashlight Solves the Problem

The Olight ArkPro is far from the brightest light on this list, but it has incredible utility for the EDC user that elevates it above the competition. First, this small, flat flashlight fits wonderfully in a pocket. Indeed, it feels much like a nice pocket knife in a front pocket. It carries like a dream.

Next, the user interface is dialed, literally. A single button on/off and rotating dial gives access to a flood light, spot light, and UV light setting. Each of these is well executed, offering clarity and smooth light edge-to-edge. The spotlight offers a nice, bright center with good spill, making it useful for both outdoors and urban use.

It has good battery life, running for 13 hours with 100-lumen output and up to 72 hours on low 15-lumen output. Turbo only gives about four minutes before regulating down to 520 lumens for a remaining 140 minutes on flood mode.

The built-in UV light is a slick and useful feature for those who need to check cash for UV watermarks or look for other fluorescent objects. It’s plenty bright enough to illuminate UV ink from four feet away or more. And it certainly makes watch lume pop!

Finally, a green laser pointer functions with its own on/off switch on the side. For construction workers, contractors, or public speakers, it’s a great bonus tool that adds utility to an otherwise excellent EDC flashlight.

The ArkPro also happens to be Olight’s first EDC light that uses USB-C charging, which removes one of the significant cons from the brand’s lighting from the future.

After testing the ArkPro for a few weeks, it edged out the previous pocket-sized choice, the Nitecore EDC33, for its added UV light and laser pointer, as well as its excellent pocket-friendly shape. If you don’t need extremely bright light, the ArkPro’s 1,500 lumens should be excellent. If you need more, the EDC27, up next, might be a better choice.

Read Review: This Flashlight Could Be an EDC Dream: NITECORE EDC27

The NITECORE EDC27 ($90) first launched at SHOT Show 2023. This light dazzled folks with a wonderful design and massive light output. If you can get your hands on one (it’s still selling out quickly with every batch produced), this light is the latest and greatest EDC flashlight on the market. I expect it to be popular for a long time.

Let’s begin with the design. The NITECORE EDC27 is a flat flashlight with a pocket clip. That means it fits easily in your pocket. It will even fit in most knife pockets on pants, making it a dream to carry. To turn it on, press the large tail switch. Next to that switch is a smaller tail switch.

Once on, depress that smaller switch to flip between modes. Or, you can press the smaller tail switch when the light is off to fire the strobe or momentary on modes. For the EDC user who may need to use the light for self-defense, this is a slick interface that should result in never hitting the wrong button for the needed use.

A quick look at the specs reveals class-leading numbers. A top output of 3,000 lumens and a 200m range will serve all but the most dire search and rescue, hunting, or tactical needs. And a runtime of 37 hours on low provides a good, long life for the vast majority of uses.

Finally, the light has an easy-to-read OLED display. It reads run time and current lumen output. This takes the guesswork out of recharging the battery and lets the user know exactly what they can expect the light to do.

Overall, the EDC27 is an incredible new flashlight. I haven’t had enough time testing it to say it will outperform our current top pick, but it certainly should give Fenix a run for its money.

Klein Tools makes some nice flashlights these days. Overall, the BBM6412 ($44) is an excellent upgrade to our previous top flashlight for mechanics.

At around the $40 range, this light packs in a ton of performance that makes it fit for both the garage and the wilderness. It has a top output of 500 lumens — while not super powerful, that’s certainly sufficient for use on the trail and around the campsite. And it’s more than enough power when working under the hood of your truck.

Where it really stands out is its magnetic base and side-throw lantern. This work light illuminates a larger area with soft, useful light at five brightness settings. In testing, it was the perfect companion while checking for loose wires under the hood of a truck in the dark. And it’s capable of big tasks, too. It’ll kick out 375 lumens for 10 hours in work light mode or 500 lumens for 7 hours in standard mode.

I loved the simple, common USB-C connection for fast recharging and the multicolor battery level indicator. Top it off with a glow-in-the-dark bezel that makes it easy to find in a center console in the dark, and you’re looking at a lot of flashlight for not much money.

Read Review: The ‘World’s Brightest Flashlight’ Is No Joke: IMALENT SR32 Review

What’s the world’s brightest flashlight? Well for several years, it was this one, the Imalent SR32. Recently, Imalent updated its lineup with a new model that outshines the SR32’s 120,000 lumens with a ridiculous 200,000 lumens. I haven’t had my hands on the new version, called the MS32, yet, so I can’t recommend it. But the SR32 is still available and still has the longest throw of any flashlight on the market.

It’s overkill for most people, but I include it here as this was the benchmark until very recently, and I have had good experience. At 120,000 lumens, the Imalent SR32 is vastly more powerful than automobile headlamps and lights up a remarkable area. It has use cases for search and rescue or industry, but is far too much flashlight for most recreational users.

But here it is, the former brightest flashlight in the world, and still a very strong contender. If you need tremendous lighting, this is it. I’ll be testing the newer MS32 as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Read Review: Nitecore EDC33 Review: Tiny Flashlight Boasts Quarter-Mile Reach and ‘Lumen Shield’

The Nitecore EDC33 ($70) was a new light for 2024, and it’s incredibly powerful yet very small. For context, this little light will fit in the palm of your hand and weighs a scant 4.48 ounces. It clips to the inside of your pocket, where it doesn’t take up very much real estate. But pull it out and push the tail switch, and wowsers!

The EDC33 packs incredible power, reaching a maximum of 4,000 lumens with a beam distance of almost five football fields. But even better, it has nice low and mid-output modes that are very usable at normal viewing distances of close proximity out to about 50 yards. And at that distance, this little powerhouse will burn and burn and burn, kicking out a very useful 300 lumens for nearly 7 hours straight.

The EDC33 has a bunch of other fabulous tech packed in the diminutive package. It has a great, physical lock to secure it in the off mode. Given the power of this light and the heat it creates, it’s very important. Fortunately, it’s easy to use.

The light packs a “Lumen Shield” mode, which it touts as a replacement for strobing self-defense. Call it what you will, but it’s a great, powerful floodlight. Finally, the light has a proximity sensor that automatically dials down the power when it’s too close for high output modes.

Now, for the negatives of a small, powerful flashlight. First, the battery is not removable. That means if the battery gets weak, the flashlight won’t perform as well. Given the quality of Nitecore batteries, I imagine you’ll get a long lifespan of multiple years from the light, but it’s worth considering, and a significant drawback for some buyers.

Next, note that this light will get very hot very quickly in high-power modes. So, if you need a powerful beam for longer than a few seconds at a time, get something bigger.

Overall, I love this light. Some folks don’t like the single-button tail switch, but it works well for me. And the light will tail stand! If you want a tiny light that has a lot of power, this one is worth considering. It’s also a heck of a good price for so many features.

NITECORE discontinued one of our previous favorites (the i4000R) but replaced it with an even better, more powerful torch. A strong contender for the best overall flashlight, the new NITECORE P20IX ($120) is one of the best flashlights on the market in terms of overall performance.

It’s slightly larger than our winner from Fenix, however, so it’s less suitable for hikers, hunters, or others who value lightweight and small size.

That said, the new version shaves half an ounce and half an inch off the previous model, coming in at 4.06 ounces and 5.57 inches long. So, it’s edging closer and closer to a pocket-friendly size.

The P20IX punches through the darkness with 4,000 lumens on turbo mode for up to 30 minutes. That’s enough to light up objects 250 yards away, so it should be high on your list for performance alone. While the ThruNite Archer ($30) lacks a few of the higher-end features of other lights on this list, it comes in at an excellent price of just $30. For that, you get a quality CREE XP-L V6 LED light source with a maximum power of 500 lumens. While that number may not look impressive, it’s more than enough for most uses. Using two AA batteries, it has a runtime of up to 4 days on firefly mode and 11 hours on medium (75 lumens).

You heard that right — this flashlight does use AA batteries. That certainly brings down the price compared with high-end rechargeables and costs money to operate. Our team prefers rechargeable flashlights for several reasons I’ll get into below. But flashlights with disposable (or rechargeable) AA batteries are very easy to repower on backcountry trips — just bring a couple of extras.

A budget flashlight needs to have more than just a nice price. It must also be durable, so you won’t have to run out and buy another in a few months. I put the Archer through rigorous testing, including submersion and drop testing. It came through with flying colors, barely edging out the competition with the Coast G32. I loved the simple interface — particularly the side button to scroll through brightness settings.

We put the Coast G32 ($25) in a head-to-head test against the ThruNite Archer, a historically popular budget choice. The competition was neck and neck. In the end, the ThruNite defeated the Coast in the drop test. The G32 failed a brutal drop from 10 feet to concrete onto the lens, while the ThruNite survived.

The G32 is a no-frills AA flashlight with two modes, but it provides excellent lighting. Zoomed out, it provides a wide, perfect circle with no halos, thanks to Coast’s Pure Beam focus. Then, zoom the lens for a bright light point with a 134-meter throw. The zoom motion is very simple and smooth. Grab the zooming head by the nice knurling and twist it. It zooms to a hard stop on wide and long throws.

For the money, the G32 is a solid, well-made flashlight that impressed me in use outdoors and around the house. It’s a bit long for EDC use but will work great around the campsite or at home. And, if you want to upgrade it, Coast offers its ZX555 ZITHION-X rechargeable battery (not included).

The Ledlenser MT10 rechargeable flashlight ($90) competes well with the Fenix above, and on paper, it in some ways outshines the competition. The specs put these two top flashlight choices in similar categories, and I expect users will love them both.

One thing I love about the MT10 over the Fenix PD36R is the Ledlenser Advanced Focus System. This simply means you can adjust between a broad floodlight and a long-distance beam in an instant. Simply press the front bezel forward, and the light focuses tighter and tighter.

It works extremely well in the field. We’ve used it to find our way out of the woods while bushwhacking during elk hunts in the Rocky Mountains and appreciated the ability to scan far away hillsides for trails and landmarks with the max 1,000 lumens and 180 ms of throw.

The Ledlenser MT10 also gives a great usable low light, running up to 144 hours at 10 lumens. It has a mid-power setting, but the brand doesn’t share specs on it. But at its middle setting, you get nice light for hiking and good runtime. I’ve only charged this flashlight twice in about a year of testing.

Speaking of charging, this light charges off a micro-USB cable. I love that feature, as it’s a common size and doesn’t require you to carry an oddball cable on trips.

Overall, the MT10 is one of the best flashlights you can buy, with most of the features an outdoor user will require. It’s reasonably priced as well, given its strong power and battery. I also appreciate its simple user interface.

The only ding against this compared with the more expensive Fenix is the build feels a little less robust (it’s IP54-rated for dust and water splashes and rain but is not fully waterproof). I also liked the color rendering a bit better on the Fenix. But the Ledlenser MT10  still puts up a great fight.

The Olight Prowess ($140) is a unique entrée to our flashlight guide due to its charging system and the fact that it can be configured as a lantern. While we’re not crazy about the charging system, the lantern mode combined with its low light settings make it a very versatile light in emergencies.

Purely as a flashlight, the Prowess packs a powerful 5,000 lumens with a commendable beam distance of 245 m. Five levels of lighting allow you to dial in your preferred brightness-to-battery life ratio, with 10-hour runtime at 300 lumens. Not too shabby.

With the flick of a switch, the Prowess becomes a lantern, projecting a warm light, redirected toward the base of the flashlight. Why You Should Trust GearJunkie

Our primary flashlight testers are not just super into the outdoors; they’re also flashlight nerds. We really love the technology that goes into flashlights and headlamps. As the author of this article, I personally spend hours every month testing the newest flashlights to see if they can outperform our favorites listed here.

For the record, it takes a long time and impressive performance for a flashlight to earn a spot in this article. I constantly test new flashlights and updates from our favorite brands and update this article many times each year to keep it up to date with the best flashlights available.

This article has evolved significantly since it was first published back in 2018. At that time, it explained in depth why I love flashlights, and how they differ from headlamps. I still love flashlights for their directionality and ease of use in many situations. However, our team has done much more testing since this guide’s inception. I base our new recommendations on those results.

So, how do I test flashlights? First, I use them in controlled environments, measuring runtime and brightness compared to claimed numbers. I put them on a scale to check the weights. I submerse them in water and drop them onto concrete.

These flashlights also get significant field testing. Our team takes them on all kinds of adventures — hiking, mountaineering, backpacking, hunting, boating, and camping are all part of the mix. Most of our team’s tests occur in the mountains of Colorado and fields and forests of the Midwest.

I take all this information and experience and compile the best advice for you. Over the years I’ve tested about 50 flashlights specifically for this buyer’s guide, selected from hundreds pitched to me by brands and examined at events like SHOT Show and the Outdoor Retailer convention. I aim to give you the same advice I give my best friends.

How I Choose Which Flashlights to Test

Battery Type

While some folks prefer AA battery lights, I disagree. You don’t replace the battery in your phone, do you? Or your earbuds? We’re all accustomed to recharging electronics in 2024. Let’s move past the archaic days of disposable batteries.

AA and AAA lights are OK for budget flashlights, but they are wasteful and not as good. Further, they require you to keep batteries on hand. It’s much easier to plug your light into a USB-C cable and keep it fresh than to buy new batteries from the store. And you’ll get better performance than from throw-away or even rechargeable AA or AAA batteries.

If you don’t use your flashlight often, just charge it every few months. I have lights that have sat for more than a year without charging that fire right up, so as long as you don’t leave it empty, you can expect a quality light to work during your next power outage. If a hurricane is on the way, grab a portable battery to keep all your electronics topped up.

Thus, most of my choices here use rechargeable batteries. I hope to replace our budget choice with a rechargeable option soon, too.

Brightness

I pick our best flashlights for several attributes. First, they need a bright white light capable of lighting a trail or workspace. My budget choice is 1,600 lumens. That’s enough to do a good job during a power outage or to light up the insides of closets at your home. If this is you, just get the Acebeam TAC 2AA and call it a day.

But if you need your light more frequently in your vocation, a top power of 500 lumens is not sufficient. Tradesmen, law enforcement officers, guides, foresters, and countless other professionals and recreational users will simply want more power and functionality.

Durability

Next, I consider water resistance and durability. All the lights tested here survived at least a 5-foot drop test onto concrete and submersion in water.

After these tests, and more importantly, I and other testers put all these flashlights through real-world, outdoor use. We use them camping. All of the selections have ridden in the center console of my truck for at least a couple of weeks. Most of them have been in a rainstorm.

To test durability, I dropped all flashlights from 3 feet and 6 feet onto concrete and put them in one foot of water for 1 hour. All of my recommended flashlights survived these tests.

Charging Speed, Type

Some flashlights recharge much faster than others. For example, the Fenix PD36R Pro uses USB-C charging at 2 amps and can recharge in less than 2 hours. Older micro-USB flashlights can take much longer to recharge.

I strongly prefer USB-C charging over all other methods. It’s a nearly universal cable type, and you probably have many in your home already. However, I will concede there are advantages to some magnetic charging styles, such as those used by Olight. These magnetic charging cables enable excellent water and dust proofing and work quickly — just don’t lose or forget the cable.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Flashlight

When choosing a flashlight, consider the following specs: size and weight, max power output (usually noted in lumens), minimum power output, runtime (especially in lower modes), durability, and waterproofness.

Lumens: Max Output

For most campers, anything over 1,000 lumens is overkill. You’ll often find yourself using much lower settings, especially around camp. So all the lights included have excellent low-power settings. From 30 lumens on my top choice to one-lumen “firefly” modes, these lower settings sip electricity.

The core of your light use will probably be in the 300-1,000 lumen range. This gives you plenty of light at normal ranges up to around 50 feet. Tight beam patterns can extend this range significantly, but the lights included here have more useful, wider light beams.

Finally, bigger numbers over 2,000 lumens are fabulous when you need them. Whether trying to spot far-off objects or searching for a lost item or drop of blood while hunting, powerful lights have a valuable place in the outdoors. You’ll rarely use high power settings often, but be very thankful for them when you need them.

User Interface

Flashlight users want easy control of the illumination their lights produce. The interface — the buttons and switches that control the light source — is an important consideration.

Most of the best flashlights, particularly smaller EDC flashlights, have a tail switch. The tail switch is usually a button that you press to turn the light on and off, and often also scrolls through brightness levels or other modes. Some of them have a momentary-on, which turns the light on through a partial press, which lets the light turn off when you release the switch. Others, like our favorite Fenix PD36R, have two tail switches to control different functions.

Some flashlights have side switches in place of, or in addition to, tail switches. A few flashlights also have physical switches that lock the flashlight in the “off” mode for safety and battery protection.

Regardless of the style of the buttons, they should be easy to learn and simple and reliable to use. We have tested and learned about the user interfaces in the flashlights in this guide. All of the lights here are effective and acceptably easy to use.

Battery Life

Another important consideration is if the flashlight uses its own rechargeable battery or if it runs on disposable batteries. Most people will get more value out of a flashlight that offers long runtimes and is easy to recharge.

Battery Type

As noted above, our team prefers rechargeable batteries in most situations. Most rechargeable batteries, such as the 21700 rechargeable Li-ion battery included in the Fenix PD36R PRO, offer superior performance to both disposable and rechargeable AA or AAA batteries.

But more importantly, flashlights that include this type of high-end rechargeable battery do not have hidden costs. And those who will use a battery more than casually will find that the cost of batteries will very quickly add up to more than the cost of the flashlight.

Next, rechargeable flashlights generally have a charging port or system built in. As you can see with our choices, our favorite flashlights today use USB-C charging. This is quickly becoming the industry standard as it is much faster than micro-USB charging. And unlike magnetic charging systems (or other proprietary chargers), you can easily find a USB-C cable anywhere and likely own several already.

One final note on AA and AAA batteries. Some folks argue that it is easier to replace batteries in the field than to charge them. Our testers have carried small battery chargers on many adventures, and they work great with flashlights for long trips. For trips over a week or two in length, though, disposable batteries still have an edge.

So keep battery and charging style in mind when you buy a flashlight. It will make a difference when you’re packing for a trip as to how many cables you’ll need to bring, or if you’ll need to buy batteries continually through the life of the product.

However, it’s convenient to quickly change batteries and refresh your flashlight in the field. Both are valid options but consider how you’ll use the light (and if you mind constantly buying new batteries).

Quality and Output

Modern LED flashlights vary in the quality of their color rendering, meaning you can see color better with some higher-end lights. The best flashlights on the market should always give you a colorized, realistic view.

Better-quality lights also tend to have more efficient LEDs. Some even have “regulators” that electronically manage the power output, resulting in consistent lighting. To expand on that, first understand that most flashlights, even very good ones, lose a little output as they run and deplete the battery. Better flashlights use a regulator to manage this drop-off. Poor flashlights tend to lose power consistently over time, gradually becoming less and less useful as the battery slowly drains.

Price & Value

As the above table reveals, flashlight prices vary widely. While a budget flashlight might seem like a good deal at first, there are good reasons for spending a little more for a truly high-quality flashlight. The battery, LED, and weatherproofing are generally superior in flashlights over about the $70 range. Here’s what you can expect:

Budget

Under $30, you will usually not get a rechargeable battery. If you do, it’s likely lower quality and won’t have a very long lifespan. In this price range, expect mediocre performance for many jobs outside of basic home use. Our budget choice is the Acebeam TAC 2AA ($50). It runs on AA batteries or the included USB-C rechargeable battery. It’s a compact little light that packs a punch and is good to have around for emergencies.

Mid-Tier

From $30 to $90, folks can expect more in terms of quality batteries, LEDs, and reflectors. A lot of good flashlights are available at this price range, especially if you don’t need a lot of lumens. Both the NITECORE EDC27 ($90) and the NITECORE EDC33 ($70) fall solidly in this category with their lithium Ion Batteries and 230+ meters of throw.

Premium

Over $90, you should get a high-quality CR123A, 18650, or other purpose-built battery. The light should have a regulated output and temperature management and a great user interface. If you use a flashlight regularly, it’s worth the investment to step into good flashlights.

My top choice is the Fenix PD36R PRO ($120), a versatile light with 2,800 lumens on its max setting, a 380m beam range, and my favorite user interface. The mighty Olight Prowess ($140) blasts an impressive 5,000 lumens if it’s maximum brightness you’re looking for.
