For months, I’ve been hiking and running in the Sierra Mountains, traipsing sandstone cliffs in Utah, and recreating in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, barefoot. Or, at least, close to barefoot, while wearing the minimalist zero-drop Notace Yama T1 shoes.

Barefoot running has reached a surprising level of popularity. People have latched onto the idea that zero-drop “barefoot shoes” can support the body’s natural mechanics by facilitating movement that reduces impact. That concept is what drove the Boulder, Colo.-based running brand Notace to launch its first shoe, the Yama T1.

Notace’s founder, Cedric Scotto, leveraged his background in footwear manufacturing and biomechanics to introduce this Japanese-inspired barefoot shoe that combines simplicity with a natural design. I put around 100 miles on these shoes during my testing. Here’s what I learned about the Yama T1 along the way.

In short: The Notace Yama T1 ($180) is a minimalist, zero-drop hiking and running shoe designed to support the body’s natural biomechanics. It has a wide toe box, reinforced side panels, and an eTPU midsole. The simple design is rugged despite being so light, and it stood up to 100 miles’ worth of abrasions. It’s not without room for improvement, but for its first minimalist outdoor shoe, this is a solid entry from Notace.

Notace Barefoot Shoe Review

As someone who’s always looking for new ways to support a connection with the outdoors, these barefoot shoes seemed to promise me exactly what I was looking for.

The idea is, barefoot shoes like the Yama T1 encourage a (more natural) forefoot strike, instead of a (less natural) heel strike. That supposedly reduces impact and allows the body to run as it was designed to. I was excited to put them to the test.

Initial Impressions

Right out of the box, the Yama 1 greeted me with comfort. They fit easily over my foot, and were comfortable to walk around in.

However, from the start, the tongue of the shoe began curling in on the sides. That hasn’t changed in over 100 miles of hiking and running. While it’s relatively easy to adjust manually with a finger before lacing up your shoes, it’s annoying. I’ve only ever experienced this issue with the La Sportiva T.C. Pro climbing shoes (which were comfortable enough to ignore the tongue).

On my first run, I hit a trail that was close to home in the Rockies. It was well-trafficked, hard-packed dirt with dozens of small hills where I could take these shoes for a spin. As I crested the first hill on the trail, I noticed a touch of rubbing from the rigid lip of the heel. But after loosening the laces on these shoes a few times, the issue seemed to subside.

On the descent, my heel stayed in place, preventing my toes from jamming in the foot box. And my toes were able to splay out naturally, increasing my balance along the way. About 5 miles later, I’d experienced almost no foot fatigue. I definitely could’ve kept going.

Comfort & Fit

While Notace suggests sizing up by half a number in these shoes, my standard size felt roomy enough lengthwise and just as comfortable widthwise. The toe box, while not specifically designed for wide feet, provided plenty of room for my toes to help me maintain balance.

The mid-foot felt snug without being overly constrictive, maintaining support and affording control. If you have the option to try these shoes on before buying, it might be a good idea.

Build & Details

The Notace Yama 1 is ultralight. A woman’s size 9 weighs just 7.5 ounces. That would make them the third lightest shoe on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Shoes. Lower weights make a big difference when it comes to reducing foot fatigue.

These barefoot shoes come with a 3mm removable insole. The lugs have a height of 3mm, the total stack height is 15 mm, with a 0mm drop height from heel to toe.

The midsole of the Yama 1 is made from an engineered eTPU, known for its durability, flexibility, and energy return. But in barefoot shoes like these, the runner should expect minimal return, since the body absorbs the majority of the impact.

The upper materials of the Yama 1 feature a double mesh construction, which supports breathability while also adding durability to the shoe.

Price & Affordability

The retail price of the Yama 1 is $180, which is competitive with some barefoot shoes such as the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit Shoe. But it’s about double the cost of Xero and Lems Shoes. Compared with the shoes on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Shoes, they’d be the third most expensive on the list. While the Yama’s current price point isn’t unreasonable, it might make price-conscious spenders think twice.

Trail Performance

At one point, I took these shoes down a wet canyon in the Utah desert to test their ability to withstand moisture. The upper mesh design kept my feet feeling dry and comfortable while I ran across sandy banks.

Eventually, I descended into the creek, fully committing to submerging them in the water time and time again. To my surprise, the Yama 1 drained extremely well. Instead of manually emptying my shoes every time I crossed the river or waiting for the moisture to evaporate, the mesh naturally allowed the water to slip out from the shoe interior before beginning the drying process.

Once I’d ascended out of the canyon, I ran across a series of sand-covered hills, which is where these shoes truly excelled. In environments where there’s little debris or opportunity to run over sharp and pointy objects, these shoes made me feel more connected to the environment without increasing my risk of injury.

Room for Improvement: Grip & Sole

My biggest complaint about the Notace Yama 1 is that it lacks grip. While these shoes performed moderately well in sand, on dirt, and on low inclines, they were less effective at keeping me feeling sure-footed while navigating steep, slick rock, and wet surfaces.

On one occasion, I wore these shoes while canyoneering in Utah to test their durability, and found myself regretting the choice since they felt unpredictable and unlikely to support rock hopping on the ascent. While the reinforced side panels stood up nicely to the abrasive desert, the soles of these shoes left something to be desired, despite their multi-directional lug pattern.

Notace Yama T1 Barefoot Shoes: Conclusion

As someone who’s struggled with chronic plantar fasciitis and has even had surgery on one plantar plate, I went into the testing of these shoes cautiously and skeptically. However, after a few months of testing and approximately 100 miles of usage, I found myself open to incorporating this shoe into some of my regular mountain treks due to its comfort, performance, and durability. I even started wearing them for weight lifting at the gym.

The Notace Yama 1 offers a great barefoot shoe option for those who tend to recreate on well-groomed and developed trails. Their lack of protection can make encountering gravel and large rocks uncomfortable. And their questionable grip makes them less favorable for highly technical trails. Yet they remain nimble, comfortable, and durable even after 100 miles of usage.

It’s no secret that CrossFit shoes aren’t great for running. Shoes that simply don’t hurt like hell during the run portion of a WOD are like gold to a CrossFitter. Creating a shoe that feels stable and supportive during a lift, yet pliable and responsive during a run, has always seemed like an impossible task. So, when the NOBULL Drive Ripstop ($150) arrived for me to test, I was understandably skeptical. 

At first glance, it appears more like a running shoe than a CrossFit shoe. The shoe has a noticeably thicker midsole than most CrossFit shoes, resulting in a higher stack height, which typically doesn’t contribute to stability during lifting.

Additionally, the ripstop upper is quite thin, especially when compared to most other CrossFit shoes I’ve worn. But after putting it through some grueling WODs, I think NOBULL might have finally created a CrossFit shoe that feels good during a run. 

In short: The NOBULL Drive Ripstop is a gym shoe that has a thick, responsive midsole, a 4mm heel-to-toe drop, and a lightweight ripstop upper. The result is a shoe that is comfortable during runs and plyometrics movements, yet fairly stable and supportive during lightweight to moderate lifts. In other words, a CrossFit shoe that you actually won’t hate running in.

NOBULL Drive Ripstop Review

Brand Background

Two former Reebok executives on a mission to create simple yet tough fitness gear founded NOBULL in 2005 (hence the name). The simple, durable Outwork Shoes that NOBULL initially released quickly gained traction in the CrossFit community. Apparel and various shoe models, including running and golf shoes, soon followed.

How I Tested the NOBULL Drive Ripstop

I used the NOBULL Drive Ripstop for a period of 2 months, training 5 to 6 days a week. These workouts included squatting 450+ pounds, deadlifting 550+ pounds, burpees, box jumps, rope climbs, and every other movement that can pop up in a CrossFit workout. Workouts also included running, ranging from shuttle runs to 200m sprints and runs of up to a mile in length.

The Good 

Nearly every CrossFit shoe I’ve worn has a degree of clunkiness. The stiff sole, which is so useful for weightlifting, gives each shoe an awkward, clompy feel during runs.

If you hang out outside of a CrossFit gym, you’ll eventually hear that slap-slap-slap of an athlete trying to power through the run portion of their workout. I’m really leaning into this point because you need to understand how excited I am that these shoes feel terrific when I run in them.

The main reason is the midsole, a thick layer of Pebax foam that is lightweight, bouncy, and delivers a solid energy return. In other words, it absorbs shock when your foot lands and releases that shock in a responsive bounce when you push off.

It’s not rockered, but there is a slight lift in the outsole at the toe and an even lighter one at the heel. It’s minor, but it’s just enough to prevent the clomp that you get with flatter CrossFit shoes. 

But that sweet, sweet bounce usually means sacrificing stability during lifts. Fortunately, the nearly flat sole worked well for lighter lifts, and it felt amazing during bodyweight movements and plyometrics.

During my testing period, I completed a workout that consisted of five rounds of 20 toes-to-bars, 10 225-pound deadlifts, and a 200m sprint. The lightweight shoes didn’t hinder my toes-to-bars at all, but I could have used a burlier toe bumper when my toes hit the bar.

The deadlifts felt stable with zero rocking from toe to heel, thanks to the flat outsole. There was a slight squish in the midsole (more on that later), but at 225 pounds, it was fairly minimal. The tradeoff was well worth how great it felt on the run.

The same goes for other lifts. During kettlebell swings and dumbbell snatches, some energy was lost to the soft midsole, as I felt my drive from the floor lacked its usual burst. However, any time lost to that was made up during the run. 

Despite the shoes’ light weight, they actually turned out to be pretty tough. The ripstop upper is showing no signs of wear after a few months of use, and the outsole is taking the miles like a champ. Also, it’s worth noting that they’re easy to clean.

The pair NOBULL sent me was brilliant white, which usually looks amazing at the start, but will quickly get scuffed up and blackened from the horse stall mats you find in CrossFit boxes. It turns out that ripstop is really easy to spot-clean, so these shoes can actually stay pretty clean. 

Which brings me to my next point — these could be perfect for travelling. They’re comfortable to walk around all day in; you can run in them, you can WOD in them, and they look good. If you only want to pack one pair of shoes on a trip, these might be the ones. 

The Bad

Usually, with CrossFit shoes, you’re getting great lifters that significantly sacrifice comfort on the run. With the Drive Ripstop, you get a terrific runner that sacrifices just a little bit during your lifts. 

As I mentioned before, the squishy midsole that feels so good on runs and burpees leeches a bit of power out of your drive off the floor during explosive movements. This was most noticeable during clean and jerks, snatches, and kettlebell swings. Instead of driving right off the floor, I could feel a slight compression in the shoe before driving up. It’s small, but it’s noticeable. 

Also, I noticed that the taller stack height forced me to adjust my positioning slightly during deadlifts, since I was slightly higher off the floor. Now, I’m a deadlift snob and generally lift in barefoot shoes, so take that with a grain of salt. But it’s a thing. 

All of these minor issues are the same ones I’ve had with other shoes that are supposed to be better for run WODs (like the Nike Free Metcon). The difference is that the Drive Ripstop is a far superior runner than all those other shoes, which makes the small difference in drive response and stack height feel worthwhile for running WODs. 

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no rope protection on the instep or the outer sidewall, so ropes might burn through the midsole pretty quickly. The ripstop might be okay, but the midsole foam is exposed, so that could be an issue.

NOBULL Drive Ripstop: Final Thoughts

Shuttle runs, 200m to 400m sprints, the dreaded mid-workout mile — all of these felt great in the Drive Ripstop. A pair of dedicated running shoes would have felt better, but they would have been awful for every other part of my workouts. The Drive Ripstop delivered enough stability to get through the lighter lifts and transformed running from the worst to the best parts of my WODs. 

They do sacrifice some drive during explosive movements, and I wouldn’t wear them on a heavy lifting day, but I generally wear lifters or flats on those days. If you’re training for a Hyrox event or your WODs typically require running, the Ripstop Drive is the perfect shoe.

Top Shoes From The Running Event 2025

Kiprun Kipsummit Max

Decathlon already proved it can disrupt premium gear with Van Rysel, its Tour de France–competing road bike that costs far less than pro-level competitors. Now it’s aiming to do the same in running with its in-house running brand, Kiprun, a performance-focused brand built around delivering race-level tech for noticeably less money.

Its first major U.S. launch is the Kipsummit Max, a trail shoe built for ultra-distance speed and stability. It has a supercritical foam midsole, a heavily rockered design with heel and toe spring, and a 6mm drop — all sitting on a wide, stable platform meant to keep you upright even deep into hallucination-prone ultra miles. (There is even a hallucination-inspired print on the upper.)

A Vibram outsole with 4mm lugs targets all-terrain traction without feeling overbuilt on smoother trails. The platform is notably wide, giving the shoe an inherently stable base — something that matters even more when you’re long into an ultra and footing is most challenging.

Kiprun is also backing the shoe with legit racing credibility through French ultrarunner Blandine L’Hirondel, winner of this year’s bonkers Diagonale des Fous.

Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra 2

Shoes rarely shake up the sport like the original Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra (ASU) did in 2024. Adidas took its world-major–winning Lightstrike Pro superfoam from the road and built it into the most groundbreaking trail super shoe of the moment.

Speed was undeniable — but so was the instability, as you’d expect from a shoe with a 44mm heel, 36mm toe, superfoam, and a carbon plate (Adidas Energy Rods). On nontechnical trails, the ASU was a rocket; on anything technical, it was largely unusable.

The second version focuses squarely on fixing that. An Adidas product manager told me that improving stability without losing the midsole’s straight-line acceleration “magic” starts with the upper. A new monomesh material now offers a snug, supportive fit through the midfoot, while a slingshot-shaped heel overlay wraps around the ankle to hold the foot during side-to-side movement or unpredictable strikes.

The outsole gains deeper lugs — 3–4 mm depending on whether the zone is braking, gripping, or propelling — giving more bite where it’s needed. Even with additional rubber, the total weight drops 8 g, landing at 265 g for a men’s U.S. 9.

Craft Kype

Craft showed off a gravel shoe tailor-made to take on Western States and the UTMB “little sister” CCC 100K. In other words, a technical gravel shoe with just enough muscle to handle some serious trail, the Kype (pronounced “shoop”) is what Craft calls its “5th generation fighter jet, Porsche Dakar, carbon fiber Gravel bike.”

This max-speed shoe weighs in at about a scant 7 ounces for a men’s size 9, and carries a technical outsole designed by Vittoria. Its aggressive 8mm drop should help keep the pace up, while the midsole employs a combination of Craft’s new high-energy Xx foam and its Px foam.

The North Face Offtrail Ultra

In 2024, The North Face refreshed its flagship Vectiv racers while quietly introducing the Offtrail — a burly, mega-lugged mountain shoe that looked like a niche, athlete-only experiment.

But according to TNF Senior Global Product Manager Brett Rivers, the new, more runnable Offtrail Ultra was tested extensively on the Hardrock 100 course, where athletes needed true mountain protection and long-runability. That insight led to the Offtrail Ultra, a more refined, more runnable evolution.

The shoe keeps the Offtrail spirit — deep traction, mountain security, athlete-driven design — but arrives with a noticeably lighter, more agile feel. A thinner, stretchier SCREEGUARD gaiter keeps debris out without the bulk, and the new dual-density DREAMBOUND nitrogen-injected midsole brings real speed: firmer on the outside for stability, softer inside for comfort and rebound. The stack comes in at 29 mm with a 6mm drop, balanced for long technical days.

Underfoot, TNF’s new SURFACE CTRL outsole uses 5mm lugs, a weight-saving THINWEB design, and a toe scrambling zone created with athlete input for grip on steep, rocky pitches. Up top, a dual-wrap upper with hydrophobic ripstop and TPU overlays provide lockdown and durability, while racing laces tidy excess with an integrated strap.

The result is a true mountain-running hybrid: still tough enough for scree and ridgelines, but far more cushioned, efficient, and runnable than the original Offtrail. A shoe built for the hardest terrain — without feeling like overkill on the way there.

Nike ACG Zegama

Nike made a bold shift this year by relaunching its ’80s All Conditions Gear platform to absorb what was formerly Nike Trail. The result is the most cohesive athlete, event, and product storytelling the brand has had in years. The original 2022 Zegama was a major departure from old standbys like the Wildhorse and Pegasus Trail, and quickly became a fan favorite.

With big new launches like the Ultrafly now in the mix, the Zegama was overdue for an update. Arriving ahead of the American 100-mile season, the new ACG Zegama becomes Nike’s max-cushioned trail option.

It uses bouncy, propulsive ZoomX on a new, wider trail-specific last built for all-day, all-night comfort. A Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4.5mm lugs boosts traction, and the shoe adds a redesigned gaiter, fit band, and more room in the toe box.

Nike’s official details confirm a full overhaul: exposed ZoomX underfoot paired with Cushlon 3.0 for stability, an improved lug pattern, rock plate, padded tongue/heel, and a modified heel for better footing on technical terrain. Tested by Nike’s All Conditions Racing Department (a massive team of international runners), the updates reflect real ultramarathon feedback.

Nnormal Cadi

After another mind-blowing summer project (“States of Elevation”), Kilian Jornet has still found time to evolve his young brand Nnormal with what may be its most runnable shoe to date: the Cadi (pronounced Kuhh-dee).

Nnormal has earned a reputation for prioritizing environmentally optimized components and exceptional durability over pure performance metrics — Kilian’s own feats and Nnormal team athlete Elhousine Elazzaou’s results aside. To Jornet’s credit, the brand’s mission has always been about longevity and repairability, often delivering footwear that claims to last twice as many miles as a typical running shoe.

The Cadi aims to carry that ethos forward while introducing a far more cushioned, energetic ride, despite using a supercritical EVA midsole — normally the kind of foam that can lose its pop over time.

Launching in March 2026, the Cadi is Nnormal’s most cushioned model yet, featuring a 35/29mm stack height, medium rocker, and an all-new X Pure supercritical EVA foam tuned to 45c durometer for a balanced mix of bounce and plushness. It’s the same long-lasting foam found in the Tomir 2, designed to maintain integrity for roughly twice the lifespan of typical supercritical midsoles.

A full-length Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4mm lugs provides confident traction on technical trails, while the fit is wider and more accommodating than previous Nnormal shoes.

The engineered mesh upper is built on a modified version of the Kjerag last, delivering better volume and breathability. A gusseted tongue, padded ankle collar, and a generally more comfort-oriented fit support long-distance trail efforts without compromising precision. A GORE-TEX Invisible Fit version will follow in fall 2026, positioning the Cadi as Nnormal’s most versatile, all-conditions option to date.

Norda 055

Not to be confused with its “005,” Norda has borrowed some innovation from that long-distance trail model for its latest, the 055. Looking like a hybrid between a running shoe and a boot, the brand emphasizes that it is a true all-mountain running shoe built for technical terrain.

The tall sock-style upper keeps debris out, while the one-piece bio-based Dyneema upper is breathable, flexible, and secure. Added padding in the heel and a reinforced rear counter enhance stability. The 055 uses a saw-tooth style lacing system that helps achieve the kind of lockdown that just isn’t possible with Dyneema (the laces’ material from the 005).

Underfoot, the 055 includes Arnitel TPEE foam with 78% rebound, delivering durability and a lively ride that rolls effortlessly down technical trails. The Vibram Megagrip Elite outsole sports 5mm lugs with a small rear wrap for added mountain durability. Stack heights are 31/38 mm with a 7mm drop, creating a stable yet responsive platform for mountain running.

Brooks Glycerin Flex

It can be hard to stand out at The Running Event when seemingly every footwear brand has a trick up its sleeve, but Brooks Glycerin Flex was a genuine head-turner.

The outsole on this new shoe is truly different than anything we saw; it uses a two-piece, independently moving outsole called “Flex Zone.” A Brooks product line manager told me that the shoe is a response to the rocketed, super trainers that are sucking all of the oxygen out of the proverbial runner’s room.

“It’s a marriage of tech and human movement,” he said. In your hand, you can literally pull the midsole pieces from side to side as a deep groove separates the front and back.

The midsole uses Brooks’ nitrogen-infused DNA Tuned foam, with softer cushioning under the heel and a slightly firmer, more responsive feel up front. Paired with a 36mm/30mm stack and a 6mm drop, the Glycerin Flex delivers plush protection without the rigidity common in today’s super trainers.

Additional flexibility comes from an asymmetrical midfoot groove and podular cutouts in the forefoot — features that help the shoe move with the runner rather than locking them into a predetermined path. The engineered knit upper maintains the familiar core fit of the Glycerin line, and the shoe weighs in lighter than expected for its category.

For runners feeling fatigued by tall, stiff, heavily rockered designs, the Glycerin Flex offers something refreshingly different: modern cushioning that stays out of the way.

Saucony Endorphin Elite 3

Saucony looks primed for a big 2026, with no shortage of new shoes — including the all-terrain Peregrine 16 and daily run Endorphin Azura — but the biggest reveal was the next evolution of its race-day super shoe. The Endorphin Elite 3 promises to be the brand’s fastest and lightest to date, with a healthy 40 mm of IncrediRUN foam underfoot.

Its aggressive 8mm drop, carbon plate, sharp rocker, and 7.2-ounce weight all conspire to add forward speed in the aim of dominating road races. That may sound like a fun shoe to lace up, but the Elite 3 is built — and priced — like a high-performance machine.

The Nike Structure Plus continues Nike’s long-running tradition of supportive, stability-focused running shoes, this time emphasizing comfort and a more responsive ride. True to form, these aren’t sexy or flashy shoes — stability is boring, but that’s the point — and they deliver a plush, controlled experience for overpronating runners.

Key to the ride is a dual-layer midsole: a top layer of ZoomX foam provides soft, bouncy cushioning, while a firmer React X layer underneath adds structure and support. Stack heights measure 32 mm in the forefoot and 42 mm in the heel, giving a stable platform without excessive bulk. Despite these additions, the shoe is lighter than the Structure 26, weighing 309 g for a men’s U.S. 10.

The Structure Plus is a modern stability shoe for runners who value long-distance comfort and controlled motion over flashy tech or aggressive aesthetics.

ASICS Gel Nimbus 28

The Gel Nimbus line has been ASICS’ flagship comfort trainer since 1999, and the new Gel Nimbus 28 continues that legacy — refined, more cushioned, and even lighter by almost a full ounce. At its heart is a new FFBLAST+ midsole that brings soft, plush cushioning designed particularly for heel-strike runners.

The stack sits at 45mm heel/37mm forefoot (8mm offset), rivaling any max cushion option from HOKA, On, or Saucony with a super-smooth ride underfoot that doesn’t overwhelm your natural gait.

One of the biggest claims for the Nimbus 28 is its weight reduction. The new version is roughly 24 g lighter than its predecessor — a men’s size 9 weighs in around 281 g (about 20+ g off prior Gel Nimbus versions). That lighter weight doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. Cushioning volume remains the same, but refined foam and structural tweaks help the shoe feel more lively while retaining its signature plushness.

ASICS also overhauled the outsole, reconfiguring rubber placement to improve heel-to-toe transitions and reduce weight by eliminating anything in excess. The upper is built from a soft, engineered mesh that secures the foot and a plush “knot-tongue” with heel loops that add to the ease of getting the shoe on and off.

The Gel Nimbus 28 is for road runners who want maximum softness without a bulky, heavy shoe — something that 28 iterations should prove out.

HOKA Mach 7

HOKA’s Mach franchise has become one of the most reliable “do-everything” trainers on the market, and the new Mach 7 stays true to that reputation while delivering a noticeable refinement over the Mach 6 (for just $5 and a few grams more).

Built on the same super-critical EVA midsole, the Mach 7 maintains the snappy, responsive ride that made the previous version such a standout — but wraps it in a lighter and more polished package.

The biggest update comes up top: a new creel jacquard upper reduces weight, improves breathability, and gives the shoe a more futuristic profile. A tongue with an internal gusset helps lock the midfoot down better than previous models, making the shoe feel more precise during uptempo efforts.

Underfoot, the midsole formula remains unchanged with only a little geometry-tuning, while the outsole gets a grip and durability update with sticky rubber in the forefoot and Durabrasion rubber in the heel.

The result is a stronger hold on wet pavement and a longer lifespan without compromising the lightweight feel.
Compared directly to the Mach 6, the Mach 7 isn’t a reinvention — it’s just a smart next step. For runners who loved the Mach 6, this is the same versatile, workout-capable trainer, but sharper and more dialed-in. For everyone else, the Mach 7 remains one of the most balanced lightweight trainers on the market.

Craft Atmosfär

Maximum effort, meet maximum cushion! Designed to accommodate the needs and abilities of ultra-running phenom Tommy Rivers Puzey (“Tommy Rivs”), the Craft Atmosfär has one overarching purpose: comfort.

Now past 40, Tommy Rivs wanted a shoe that would protect his joints and add more fun to his NYC Marathon effort this year.

Craft came back with a whopping 50.5mm heel stack shoe that tips the scales at just 9.5 ounces. The Atomosfär uses Craft’s Px midsole foam, which it advertises as 20% lighter than EVA.

Tracksmith Eliot Ryder

Like the aforementioned Satisfy, Tracksmith was accused of “land grabbing” the footwear space after establishing itself through apparel — but its commitment looks real. The Eliot Ryder is already the brand’s fourth shoe in 2 years, with a fifth (the winterized Eliot Runner NDO GTX) close behind.

While the brand’s first two road models were straightforward trainer and super-trainer options, the new Eliot Ryder marks Tracksmith’s first true max-cushion entry.

The max-cushion category is crowded with extreme stack heights, loud geometries, and softer-than-soft foams that sometimes feel as unstable as they look. Runners are showing signs of fatigue with the trend; the higher the stacks go, the wobblier they get. Tracksmith’s angle is different: instead of chasing size, it has rethought how max cushioning is delivered.

Like the Eliot Racer, the Ryder gets its stack from a drop-in insole, one of the largest in any shoe we’ve seen. It’s a 25mm supercritical ATPU slab — nested inside the shoe’s upper. This lowers the center of gravity, streamlines the silhouette, and unifies foot and platform for more stability than typical max models. A supercritical stabilizing chassis, refined rocker geometry, and a more accommodating last add control to the package.

Despite its substantial stack, the Ryder stays pretty light at 9.5 ounces (men’s 9) and helps the New England brand slot into the max-cushion space without copying the conventional recipe.

Mount to Coast M1

If there was an “it” booth at the show this year, it was probably Mount to Coast. The Chinese brand has surged in popularity in recent years, with athletes in both women’s and men’s categories snagging world records at this summer’s GOMU World Championships.

With the buzz in full effect and a booth packed with eager onlookers hoping to see what’s next, the brand showed off its next most-technical trail shoe — the M1. Highlighting the advancements was a new JETCELL supercritical midsole foam, which the brand claims offers the highest energy return of any in its lineup.

This pairs with the brand’s signature “TUNEDFIT” dual lacing system — cinching at the forefoot and traditional lacing up top for increased stability. Underfoot, the M1 has MegaGrip and Litebase — pretty much the standard for every legit trail shoe right now.

Speedland SL:LDVL

One of GearJunkie’s 2024 “Best in Show” winners — the Speedland RX:FPY — signaled that the brand was no longer content staying in the pure-trail lane. That shoe’s massive, uncompressed slab of superfoam turned heads as much for its feel as for its wild aesthetic. Since then, Speedland has expanded into road and hybrid categories, and the new SL:LDVL (Leadville) pushes that progression further.

Designed specifically for the demands of the Leadville 100, the LDVL is a lightweight long-distance racing shoe tuned for courses that are mostly runnable with only moderate technicality. It pairs a minimally lugged outsole with a fast, supercritical TPEE foam midsole for max speed and efficiency without overbuilding the outsole. Despite a balloon-like silhouette and a 41/34mm stack, the shoe comes in at an impressively light 8.9 ounces (men’s 9).

As with every Speedland model, the platform is customizable and secure. The removable plate system lets runners choose stiffness for different efforts, while a dual-zone fit system — rear strap with a forefoot BOA Li2 dial — locks in the foot without pressure points. Underfoot, a supercritical TPEE external midsole and a proprietary internal foam blend provide bounce and stability.

The LDVL seems purpose-built: smooth on dirt roads, quick through climbs, and energetic enough to stay fresh deep into ultra mileage.

Lems RadMaker

Hot on the heels of two big hiking shoe launches this year — the Trail Blazer and Trail Thrasher — Lems will jump feet-first into the world of running shoes.

Its debut “Rad” line will include the RadMaker and RadUltralite. Both share the same design DNA, with a slight difference in drop, stack, and weight. At its heart, the RadMaker is a daily road runner for medium to long runs. While its 5mm drop and 31mm heel stack aren’t design breakthroughs, its secret sauce appears to be in its “highly responsive” midsole, comprising EVA and 10% PEBA.

A noticeable, if not dramatic, rocker profile is designed to promote a midfoot strike, potentially adding a little pace to daily runs. The RadUltralite shares most of the design, but with a scant 2mm drop, a more modest 24mm heel stack, and a weight right around 9 ounces.

True to the Lems brand, both shoes promise a generous toe box.

Arc’teryx Sylan 2

Previously announced over this summer, the Sylan 2 bears repeating as it stands as Arc’teryx’s biggest footwear launch to kick off 2026. At the show, we learned that the Sylan 2 has been continually receiving little updates and design improvements in the lead-up to its March launch.

This flagship trail runner cuts weight, adds stability, and boosts breathability over its 2024 predecessor. Specifically engineered for rugged trail races and FKT attempts, the Sylan 2 uses a TPEE midsole foam, jacquard knit, abrasion-resistant upper, and a carefully tailored carbon plate that designers continually tweaked to add stability and control.

It also doesn’t hurt that the shoe is gorgeous to look at.

Altra Olympus 275 HiLo

Higher cushion, lower weight — that’s what will define the next iteration of Altra’s signature Olympus 275 high-stack trail shoe.

Altra boasts that its new EGO Max midsole foam will be 15% lighter and 10% softer than its current Olympus 275 foam. The HiLo carries over other performance cues from the inline version, including MATRYX upper, Vibram MegaGrip outsole, and scree sleeve. For fans whose fast objectives on gnarly trails demand high stack and zero drop, this will be the most advanced Altra Olympus to date.

Merrell MTL SpeedARC Peak

In the vast sea of eye-catching neons, rich pastels, angular typefaces, and swooshy logos, perhaps nothing at TRE looked cooler than Merrell’s Jeckyl-and-Hyde–themed MTL SpeedARC Peak. Bisected right down the center into contrasting blue and yellow hemispheres, this shoe is yet another evolution of its SpeedARC platform, which debuted in 2024.

Characteristic of the platform, the MTL (short for Merrell Testing Lab) carries two midsole layers with a carbon plate sandwiched between. The top layer is an all-new “FloatPro” PEBA-based racing foam, boasting high energy return across long distances (up to ~100 km). Underneath, a forked carbon plate promises extra propulsion and added lateral stability, and just beneath that is a more durable foam.

Bookending the fancy-schmancy midsole is a Vibram MegaGrip Elite outsole and a breathable, abrasion-resistant Matryx upper. All in all, this looks like a seriously fun trail shoe.

On Running Cloudsoma

On will launch an all-new trail shoe in spring 2026. The magic behind the Cloudsoma will be its traction “pods” that flex independently in an effort to accommodate the foot’s natural movement.

On dubs the zonal outsole Cloudtec Connect, and it’s designed to better conform to uneven terrain. Match this with a healthy 33–27mm stack and its supercritical PEBA foam (Helion HF), and the result purports to provide maximum traction and comfort on runs that start at your doorstep and find their way onto tracks less traveled.

Kiprun KipStorm Elite

Kiprun is a very new French brand with a name born from a happy misunderstanding — its founders misheard American fans at the New York Marathon shouting, “Keep running!” and thought they were yelling, “Kip running!” The joke stuck, but the shoes themselves are no joke.

The brand grabbed global attention when Jimmy Gressier shocked the field in the 10,000m at the 2025 Tokyo World Championships, wearing a prototype of what would become the KipStorm Elite road racing shoe.

Built to help deliver your best performance on race day, the KipStorm Elite is engineered for half and full marathon distances. It combines high energy return, a full-length carbon plate, featherweight construction, and deep cushioning to keep legs fresh as your race develops.

The midsole delivers snappy propulsion as the geometry and foam blend aim to strike a balance between fast and forgiving. It’s extremely hard to find an elite-level road racing shoe for under $280, so Kiprun’s cost savings ($250) should help entice first-timers to give this new brand a try.

TEVA Trailpeak

TEVA made a point of reinforcing its re-commitment to technical innovation in footwear — a recent push highlighted by its launch of technical hiking boots earlier this year. At TRE, the brand’s big reveal was a super-lightweight fast hiking/trail running shoe dubbed Trailpeak.

Tipping the scales at a svelte 6.8 ounces, the Trailpeak marks the brand’s first shoe fully co-developed with its athlete roster. That includes Mike Wardian, trail name “Sparkle Pony,” who most recently blazed the Appalachian Trail in 60 days at age 50.

With Wardian’s help, TEVA dialed in a technical trail shoe with its lightest and most responsive midsole foam, HYPER COMF+, paired to a light, breathable upper, and a speed lace system mated to a 12-anchor internal cage. In short, the Trailpeak is designed to propel runners over highly technical terrain and provide maximum stability over sharp switchbacks.

Mount to Coast

In addition to its trail running reveal, Mount to Coast also unveiled its first-ever super trainer for serious road runners. The C1 showcases dual midsole foams — a top layer of its “eco-friendly,” high-energy CircleCell foam over a traditional EVA foam.

A more pronounced rocker profile, breathable mesh, and TUNEDFIT (dual-lacing) upper complete the package for this high-cushion workhorse.

Inov8 TRAILFLY PRO

Inov8 aims to elevate its technical TRAILFLY shoe with the TRAILFLY PRO, its “most advanced, high-performance trail running shoe ever.” The sub–8-ounce PRO carries a new last and updates to the upper, midsole, and outsole. But the star of this shoe is its bouncy but durable TPEE midsole foam.

With its trademark, sticky graphene-infused lugged outsole, the TRAILFLY PRO is designed to take on serious off-piste runs with steep terrain in less-than-ideal conditions. In fact, it’s rooted in the brand’s “fell running” heritage.

Satisfy The Rocker Team

The genre-bending French apparel brand Satisfy entered the footwear world in 2025 with The Rocker, a trail shoe perfectly in line with the brand’s ethos of doing things differently. It featured a first-of-its-kind TunedLug Vibram outsole, superfoam midsole, and premium upper — but it was too narrow for many runners and had excessive midfoot volume, sometimes fitting better with the insole removed.

At TRE, marketing manager Tommy Hubert told me, “Satisfy is into footwear for the long haul; the Rocker was never meant to be a one-off.” The Rocker “Team” builds on that vision. Engineered for desert-style running – loose and sandy — it stays stable on loose dirt and rocks, responsive on hardpack, and composed under heat.

The TunedLug outsole maps lugs to pressure zones for precise traction, while the Euforia Super Foam midsole balances rebound and long-distance stability. The midsole in the original “Rocker” was super-impressive — the Team should carry the mantle. The Rippy Matryx upper adds forefoot volume, an extended toe cap, and a dual insole system for customizable fit — something the Rocker genuinely lacked.

The Rocker Team keeps Satisfy’s unique design DNA while solving the fit issues of the original.

CrossFit athletes know no two days are alike. The sport asks a lot of you — and your shoes. With activities ranging from heavy deadlifts and Olympic weightlifting to gymnastics and distance running, it’s no surprise that finding the best CrossFit shoes can be a challenge.

I researched and tested the most popular CrossFit and cross-training shoes on the market — shoes that can be used for running, jumping, lifting, rowing, riding, climbing, carrying, and rage training. As a CFL2 CrossFit coach and competitive powerlifter, I have burned through hundreds of shoes over the course of my career, and I know what goes into a great CrossFit shoe.

I evaluated each model to highlight its specific strengths and shortcomings, and make recommendations based on the diverse needs of individuals who are exclusively practicing CrossFit, as well as those who incorporate stricter lifts and conditioning. After much sweat, some blood, and maybe a few tears, I am proud to present my list of the best CrossFit shoes for 2025.

Read Review: R.A.D One V2 Review: R.A.D.’s New CrossFit Shoe Is Built for Lifters

R.A.D’s ONE V2 ($150) was explicitly designed for training and lifting weights, and they nailed it. The upper feels thick and supportive, and the WAVE ridges creeping up the sides pair well with the firm TPU clip on the heel, creating a shoe that provides excellent support for heavy lifts. 

It has a wider toebox than its predecessor, which will appeal to athletes with wider feet. The mesh and suede upper feels significantly more structured than most of the shoes on this list. 

That structure, along with the shoe’s supportive midsole, locked my feet to the floor during heavy lifts. In a workout that included front squat doubles with 300 pounds, my feet never felt like they were rolling to the side or shifting in the shoe. The same goes for Olympic weightlifting workouts: The grippy outsole and locked-in feel provided excellent stability during heavy cleans and snatches, while the split pattern in the outsole delivered plenty of forefoot flexibility during split jerks. 

That flexibility was apparent during movements like burpees, box jumps, and walking lunges. The shoes, while extremely stable, never felt too stiff during plyometrics. During double-unders, I never felt that excessive fatigue in my feet that I get when I’m trying to jump rope in shoes that are too stiff. 

There are a few things to consider with the R.A.D ONE V2s. While I appreciate the stiff, supportive upper, it doesn’t breathe as well as I’d like it to, especially during 100-plus degree workouts in my local box in California. It’s a small nitpick for me, but people whose feet tend to overheat should take note. Also, they feel good (not great) on shuttle runs and 200-meter sprints, but any longer than that and you’ll want your running shoes. 

Those nitpicks aside, the stability and flexibility paired with the extremely durable upper have made this my go-to shoe when I head to the gym. If you’re looking for a shoe that doesn’t compromise in the gym and feels reasonably comfortable when the WOD calls for running, the R.A.D ONE V2 is a great option.

With the average price for a CrossFit shoe floating around $150, finding a bargain usually means trying to find an older shoe on an outlet site. That’s not the case anymore, thanks to the Reebok Nano Gym ($100). Designed specifically for the gym, the Nano Gym is adept at pushing through fitness classes, weight lifting, and (more so than most CrossFit shoes) running. 

While it may lack some CrossFit-specific features that bias it toward lifting, the Nano Gym has just enough support, stability, and flexibility to be a serviceable shoe in almost every CrossFit movement. The 8 mm midsole drop may be too high for people who want a more even lifting platform, but those with ankle mobility issues will love the boost during squats. The heel support is much softer than you’ll find on most CrossFit shoes, which means less power in explosive movements, but the TPU heel cradle provides additional stability. 

And while that heel may hamper lifts, it feels pretty good on a run. It’s well-known that CrossFit shoes are often terrible for running (the best of them on this list are merely serviceable), but that soft heel and 8 mm drop made this my favorite runners during testing.

One of the WODs that I did with these shoes required a mix of middle-distance runs, dumbbell snatches, and goblet squats. These shoes felt comfy on the run, while the lifting portions were more than comfortable (I PR’d that workout by over a minute). 

Is it the best shoe for everything in CrossFit? No. That soft heel might be an unforgivable sin for many athletes, and the lack of midsole rope protection means these shoes will be destroyed if rope climbs are prescribed. 

However, for any workout that requires plyometrics, running, and sub-maximal lifts, the Reebok Nano Gym is ideal for CrossFit. And the fact that it’s the cheapest shoe you’ll find by $50 or more doesn’t hurt one bit.

One of the original CrossFit shoes, Reebok’s Nano series has gone through fifteen iterations, each one with its specific strengths and weaknesses. We’re happy to report that the Reebok Nano X5 ($140) is the company’s best version in years, thanks to the wider toe box, grippy outsole, and possibly the best blend of lifting and running capabilities. 

The Nano X5’s toebox is noticeably wider than that of the Nano X4. That roominess, combined with the flexible and slightly stretchy patterned FLEXWEAVE upper, gives the X5 excellent comfort right out of the box. 

Reebok also replaced the X4’s Floatride Energy Foam with a new DUALRESPONSE EVA midsole. This new midsole combines with Reebok’s Lift and Run Chassis System to deliver the most balanced support and cushioning I’ve experienced with a CrossFit shoe, with equal capability in lifting, plyometrics, and running.

And I’d like to emphasize the running part — CrossFit athletes have learned to appreciate shoes that hurt the least with running, but for distances up to a mile, the Nano X5 is a pleasure to run in. The cushioning, flexible forefoot, and barely-there rocker (the toe is elevated a bit) gave us just enough to maintain a speedy, natural stride without that clompy feeling most CrossFit shoes deliver. They won’t replace your running shoes — after about a mile, fatigue would set in, and the heelstriking would commence — but for a CrossFit shoe, they were a delight. 

There are some minor quibbles: The wider heel and grippy outsole take some getting used to. During movements where I tend to cross my feet, like box step-overs, I almost tripped during the first few reps. And while the FLEXWEAVE upper is fairly durable, we’d like to see some sidewall protection for rope climbs, as you see in the Nike Metcon 9. 

But thanks to its comfort for every modality of CrossFit, this is the perfect shoe for athletes who like to walk in the gym with no idea what the workout is. No matter what devious workout your coach has programmed, the Reebok Nano X5 can handle it.

Normally, it takes a few iterations for a company to get CrossFit shoes dialed. Luckily for us, Born Primitive knocked it out of the park with its first attempt, the Born Primitive Savage 1 ($130). The Savage 1 has excelled at all things CrossFit while being one of the lightest and most comfortable shoes on my list. I tried them for months across every modality, from Olympic lifting to mile-long runs, and the shoes never failed to impress.

The Savage 1 has a super breathable textile upper with a wide toebox and laminate overlays for support and added durability. The wide toebox and structure provided a comfortable fit, and the laminate upper kept the foot right where it belonged throughout my workouts.

The Savage 1 was one of the first shoes that I’ve tried that provided solid stability during lifts like the clean & jerk and snatch, but was flexible enough to be comfortable during box jumps and burpees. My feet generally hurt during most WODs, but they never ached in this shoe. That’s a huge win right there.

These shoes also run very well for an all-around training shoe — heads and shoulders above the Metcon 9, Nano X4, or the NOBULL Trainer. They’re not full-on running shoes, so I won’t be running any half-marathons in them, but for runs of a mile or less, they were responsive, though I would have appreciated more cushioning. 

I did find the laces a bit short, but the rounded profile prevented them from coming undone at inopportune times, such as during double-unders or sprints to beat the time cap. Also, during rope climbs, they weren’t as grippy as other shoes on this list. 

Are they a full-fledged lifter? Certainly not. Nor are they a bona fide runner. But if you just want a low-heel-drop pair of shoes that you can do any workout in, anytime, while looking and feeling good, the Born Primitive Savage 1 is your shoe.

It’s no secret that CrossFit shoes aren’t great for running. Shoes that simply don’t hurt like hell during the run portion of a WOD are like gold to a CrossFitter. Creating a shoe that feels stable and supportive during a lift, yet pliable and responsive during a run, has always seemed like an impossible task. So, when the NOBULL Drive Ripstop ($150) arrived for me to test, I was understandably skeptical. 

The NOBULL Drive Ripstop is a gym shoe that has a thick, responsive midsole, a 4 mm heel-to-toe drop, and a lightweight ripstop upper. The result is a shoe that is comfortable during runs and plyometrics movements, yet fairly stable and supportive during lightweight to moderate lifts. In other words, a CrossFit shoe that you actually won’t hate running in. In fact, these shoes feel terrific when I run in them.

The main reason is the midsole, a thick layer of Pebax foam that is lightweight, bouncy, and delivers a solid energy return. In other words, it absorbs shock when your foot lands and releases that shock in a responsive bounce when you push off. It’s not rockered, but there is a slight lift in the outsole at the toe and an even lighter one at the heel. It’s minor, but it’s just enough to prevent the clomp that you get with flatter CrossFit shoes. 

However, the squishy midsole that feels so good on runs and burpees saps a bit of power from your drive off the floor during explosive movements. This was most noticeable during clean and jerks, snatches, and kettlebell swings. Instead of driving right off the floor, I could feel a slight compression in the shoe before driving up. It’s small, but it’s noticeable. 

Shuttle runs, 200- to 400-meter sprints, the dreaded mid-workout mile, all of these felt great in the Drive Ripstop. A pair of dedicated running shoes would have felt better, but they would have been awful for every other part of my workouts. The Drive Ripstop delivered enough stability to get through the lighter lifts and transformed running from the worst to the best parts of my WODs.

CrossFit shoes are designed to do many things well, but, as with most utility players, they rarely excel at any one thing. If you’re on a dedicated lifting program and/or you hoist 300 pounds on a regular basis, you’re going to want a dedicated lifter like the Reebok Legacy Lifter III ($220). 

This is because weightlifting shoes are built for two things: Stability and stiffness. An extremely stiff sole maximizes power transfer during explosive movements necessary during cleans and snatches, and a wide, stable base keeps ankle and foot movement to a minimum when squatting heavy weight. 

The Legacy Lifter III delivers on all of these parameters. During testing, the extremely firm thermoplastic polyurethane (basically a really hard plastic, also known as TPU) platform under the heel absorbed zero power during my Olympic lifts. I wore these on a three-month Olympic lifting program and managed a 20-pound increase in his squat snatch and a 30-pound increase in his squat clean. Speaking of squats, the exterior TPU heel reinforcement that rises up over the heel prevented any foot movement when dropping into a squat and driving back up.

The main noticeable difference between the Legacy Lifter III and its predecessor, the Legacy Lifter II is the addition of the Pump feature. This feature, which elder millennials may remember fondly from their childhoods, entails a pump button on the tongue that wearers can use to inflate the tongue for a more secure, custom fit.  

That secure fit is bolstered by the shoe’s midsole strap, adding to the Legacy Lifter III’s superlative stability. I’ve gone through countless lifting shoes in my fitness journey, and the Legacy Lifter III is by far the most stable, secure shoe I’ve used.

At $220, these lifters are an investment, but durability isn’t an issue here. I’ve been testing the shoe for nearly a year’s worth of workouts, and it still looks like new. I don’t anticipate any blowouts or degradation throughout my next few years of wear. 

I have a medium-to-wide foot, which perfectly suits the Legacy Lifter III but may not work well with lifters who have narrower feet. If your feet tend to swim in medium-width shoes, I’d recommend something narrower, like the Adidas Adipower 3.

That said, this is not a versatile shoe. While the forefoot is flexible enough for split jerks, you won’t want to do movements like burpees or box jumps in them. They weigh nearly three times as much as some of the shoes on this list, which is not ideal for toes to bar or muscle-ups. And God help you if you try to run any distance in these. The bottom line is that if you don’t plan to hoist some heavy weight, these shoes aren’t for you.

If, however, you are looking for a shoe that’s ideal for Olympic movements, heavy back/front/overhead squats, and overhead work, you’re not going to find a more stable platform than the one on the Reebok Legacy Lifter III.

Well-known CrossFit shoe brands like Reebok and Nike regularly release new iterations, which can, unfortunately, lead to constantly varied quality between versions. Luckily, Nike’s newest, the Metcon 9 ($150), feels like the company has created the peak CrossFit shoe. This shoe feels like it was built from the ground up for the Sport of Fitness. 

I’ll start with one of the 9’s most noticeable features — the huge wraparound rope guard that wraps around the entire midfoot. This robust rope guard not only provides excellent protection from abrasion on rope climbs but also delivers excellent grip. This grip is further enhanced by a few rubber stripes on top of the toe box. 

And man, is that grip sweet. Of the dozens of CrossFit shoes I’ve used over the years, none have come close to matching the Metcon 9’s grip. Hundreds of rope climbs into testing, and I have yet to slip once. If your training entails rope climbs, that alone is worth the price of admission. 

One other unique detail is the small hook-and-loop strap that secures the laces and very effectively prevents them from coming undone. It may seem like a frivolous detail, but if you’ve ever had a lace come undone while trying to go unbroken in double-unders, you’ll know how ideal that is. It’s a small detail, but it’s one that every CrossFit shoe should have. 

Like any all-arounder, the shoes aren’t perfect — they’re not the best runners on this list, the dense upper material hampers breathability a bit, and they’re heavier than many options on this list. And they rank near the bottom for comfort during any run longer than 200 meters. But if you’re looking for a shoe that slays any WOD that doesn’t require running, the Nike Metcon 9 is an excellent shoe.

Vivobarefoot has been in the minimalist shoe game for quite some time now. I tested the brand’s Vivobarefoot Motus Strength ($200) in this round and found these shoes to be well-made, good-quality shoes right out of the box. At $200, the Motus Strength is an expensive option, but my testing made me confident that buyers will be satisfied with the top-quality construction of this shoe. 

Designed specifically for strength training, the shoe is an excellent option for the functional training crowd. It is also a superb deadlift shoe, and barefoot runners will value it for its wide fit, natural feel, and good grip. That being said, the Motus Strength comes with a caveat. If this is your first minimalist shoe, I would highly recommend that you ease into your runs and workouts while wearing them. 

Zero drop and zero padding mean zero support, so it might be a rough transition for folks switching to the minimalist shoe situation. However, this shoe is great if you’re interested in strengthening your feet and ankles or prefer to feel more tuned into your feet when lifting. I especially valued the bio-feedback of this minimal shoe during kettlebell conditioning.

The added protection is a big plus and makes the Motus Strength stand out amongst other barefoot-style shoes. While the bottom of the outsole remains minimalist and flexible, it wraps up around the heel, midfoot, and toebox to help protect the foot from random weight drops (somewhat) and to provide some lateral stability during heavy lifts.

Sizing can be a little tricky with the Motus Strength — they run a bit big. Vivobarefoot has a helpful guide on its site for choosing your appropriate size, so be sure to check that out before pulling the trigger. I’m normally an 11, but I’m a 10.5 in the Motus Strength. Otherwise, these shoes are lightweight, breathable, wide, & flexible — making for a great summer training shoe.

If you love deadlifts, these shoes are ideal. The zero heel-toe drop is ideal for maintaining good positioning and minimizing forward lean. As far as squatting and Olympic lifting go, there are many better options out there. I’d strongly recommend purchasing a dedicated lifter like the Reebok Legacy Lifter III to give you the positioning and stability you need for big lifts. 

If, however, you are looking for a minimalist cross-trainer to do some running, some functional training, a little kettlebell work, and the occasional deadlift session, I’d be hard-pressed to find a better option. The Vivobarefoot Motus Strength is an excellent training shoe on its own and a very good minimalist shoe on top of that.

NOBULL’s Outwork ($139) shoes (formerly known as the NOBULL Trainer) are so durable that you may never need to buy another pair. Firstly, the shoe features a one-piece upper, so there are fewer weak points in the shoe. The result? A minimal chance of those sidewall blowouts that you’ll see in other shoes.

And that one piece is made of SuperFabric, made by applying a layer of protective guard plates to a fabric. These guard plates are basically tiny pieces of hard plastic. The plastic acts as a shield over the fabric, making it abrasion-resistant without sacrificing breathability or flexibility. This also gives the shoes a distinct dot pattern.

The low-profile lugs on the outsole provide both traction and a stable platform, while the firm midsole provides ample support during heavy lifts (though some athletes find them clunky on runs).

And that’s the big downside with the Outwork — if you want soft landings on jumps or any semblance of cushioning on a run, these aren’t the shoes for you.

NOBULL takes pride in being an understated company. Its shoes are solid, stable, and durable without any extra bells and whistles. The Outwork may not be flashy, but it’ll get the job done — and do it for years without showing any wear.

GORUCK is known for its gritty, stripped-down styling, and the Ballistic Trainer ($140) epitomizes those traits. With the durable Cordura ballistic nylon upper and subdued styling, the shoe looks like it was made to go through hell. So I put it to the test. 

I took the Ballistic Trainer through months of testing, exposing it to weightlifting, high-rep, heavy deadlift sessions, sprints, gymnastic movements, and the dreaded Murph workout — a 1-mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, and 300 air squats, followed by another 1-mile run, all wearing a 20 lb. weight vest.

The midsole provides what all CrossFit shoes offer, but rarely deliver: Equal performance across various workouts. The platform felt secure and steady during Olympic lifts, and the elevated heel gave the shoe a lifter feel during heavy back squats. With movements like burpees and box jumps, the forefoot provided more than enough flexibility to enable a full range of motion. 

One of the most noticeable aspects of the Ballistic Trainer is its durability. It looks like a tough shoe, and man, does it perform like one. After tests that included runs, jumps, burpees, and shoe-wrecking rope climbs, a quick wipe-down with a wet rag had my test pair looking like it just came out of the box. 

At almost 11 ounces, however, you won’t be mistaking these for running shoes any time soon. Also, the sole is fairly stiff on arrival and requires a short break-in period to really deliver. But if you’re willing to put in the work, the Ballistic Trainer will more than meet you halfway.

My Testing Process

Testing the shoes on this list entailed taking each shoe through weeks of CrossFit workouts, making sure to do all of the major lifts, running through a series of gymnastics movements, and running anywhere from 200 meters to three miles in each shoe. Throughout the testing periods, I considered the shoes’ fit, feel, durability, and general eagerness to lace them up for another workout. I also had other athletes at my gym try out the shoes to get a wider range of opinions on each one’s performance.

Since CrossFit shoes are designed, for the most part, to perform in a variety of situations, I took shoes through training, competition, and daily wear (when applicable — I didn’t wear the lifting shoes around town). Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a CrossFit Shoe

Cushioning & Heel Drop

Cushioning and heel drop are two of the most important factors in choosing a shoe for CrossFit. It’s also the first thing you notice when you put a pair on.

As far as cushioning goes, there’s a delicate balance to maintain. Too little cushioning can be wildly painful during high-impact movements. Unless you’re used to barefoot shoes like the Vivobarefoot Motus Strength, these movements can give your feet a beating on long runs.

Too much cushioning, however, can lead to a loss of power and responsiveness, especially during weightlifting. Most CrossFit shoes strike a balance between cushion and support, with most leaning towards the support side.

Heel drop refers to how high the heel is off the ground versus how high the toe is. For CrossFit, 4 to 7 millimeters seems to be the sweet spot. It strikes the perfect balance between cushioning on runs and balance on lifts.

Rigid Sole

A rigid sole, particularly in the heel, is ideal for Olympic lifting. A soft sole’s cushioning will absorb the power that an athlete produces in their leg drive during explosive movements.

Reebok’s Legacy LIfter III or Adidas AdiPower have hard plastic or non-compressive TPU sole material for explosive lifts. This is one of the biggest differences between CrossFit Shoes and running shoes.

Many CrossFit shoes, like the Nike Metcon 9, attempt (with varying degrees of success) to blend a rigid sole for weightlifting with enough cushioning for bodyweight movements and running. If you’re looking for an all-around CrossFit shoe with a stiffer sole that’s ideal for weightlifting, the Metcon 9 or Reebok Nano X4 would be solid options.

Wide Toebox

Wide toeboxes are a matter of preference. Athletes with wider feet will appreciate the way that a wider toebox allows the toes to splay out. Shoes like the NOBULL Drive Ripstop and Born Primitive Savage 1 have wider toeboxes for people who prefer a roomier forefoot.

However, athletes with narrow feet can feel like their feet aren’t getting any sidewall support in wider shoes. If you’ve got a narrower foot, consider something like the NOBULL Outwork or Reebok Nano X4. When you buy online, make sure the company has a good return policy. When they arrive, try them on immediately to make sure they’re a good fit.

Lateral Support

Lateral support is especially important for athletes with previous ankle injuries or who tend to roll their ankles. Shoes utilize different designs to combat this.

Nike’s Metcon line and Reebok’s Nano line sport slightly wider outsoles for a wider base. And NOBULL’s mid-top shoe provides additional support for the ankle. For Olympic lifts and heavy squats, where lateral stability can be the difference between a personal record and dropping the weight in shame, the Reebok Legacy Lifter III’s aggressively rigid TPU sidewall and heelsupport is key.

Durability

CrossFit is as hard on the shoes as it is on the athlete (maybe more so). I’ve seen every failure that a shoe can experience, from delaminating materials to a sole literally breaking in half.

One of the most common failures in a CrossFit shoe is a sidewall blowout. From lateral pressure on the sidewalls to abrasion from rope climbs, shoes’ sidewalls take a lot of abuse. Many shoemakers add TPU reinforcement on the sidewalls to shield the foot from this type of wear. I am painfully aware of the frustration of blowing out a sidewall or wearing a groove in an outsole during rope climbs, so any shoe that showed excessive wear did not make it into this list.

Price & Value

There’s no way around it — CrossFit shoes are pricey, and they’re getting pricier. If you’re looking for a new pair of kicks for your box, you can expect to spend somewhere around $150, with a few exceptions for specialty shoes and discounted shoes from previous seasons. Here’s what you get (and don’t get) with the various price ranges.

Budget

If you’re looking to spend as little as possible on a pair of CrossFit shoes, you can often find last year’s models online for anywhere from $60-$100. The only new pair in this price range that I liked was the Reebok Nano Gym ($100), which offers plenty of cushioning and just enough stiffness to perform during lifts. Shoes in this price range can do the job, but you’ll often find features like rope guards and sidewall support missing here.

But if you’re new to CrossFit, searching for a bargain shoe can be a good way to get started and discover what features you need (and don’t need) in your endeavors.

Mid-Tier

Most CrossFit shoes you’ll find are in the $140-$160 range. This category includes mainstays like the Metcon and Nano lines, as well as the excellent NOBULL Drive Ripstop ($150) and Born Primitive Savage 1 ($140) trainers. For the added $50, you’ll find features like rope guards and grips, sidewall protection and support, TPU heel slides for handstand pushups, and lace locks to keep your shoes tied during double-unders. Plus, I’ve found that these shoes generally last longer than the shoes in the bargain range.

Premium

Super pricey competition shoes like the TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon ($225) are new to the field, but its high-end components and excellent performance are ideal for competitors who are looking for an edge. If you’re looking for a specialty shoe, like a barefoot workout shoe like the Vivobarefoot Motus Strength ($200) or a lifting shoe like the Reebok Legacy Lifter III ($220), be prepared to spend $200 or more. These shoes offer specific features that you won’t find in general CrossFit shoes, like zero heel-toe drop or an extremely rigid heel for effective power transfer during lifts. For general CrossFit workouts, these shoes aren’t entirely necessary, but if you’re looking to specialize or optimize your training for competition, they may be worth the investment.

The Nike Metcon line — What’s all the hype about?

This worked well for lifting weights but was less comfortable during gymnastics and run-heavy WODs. Nike made a big splash by erring on the run side being a running shoe with a softer midsole material.

CrossFitters loved this, as well as the wide toebox. Over the years, Nike and Reebok refined both of their lines, striking a better balance between running and lifting.

As CrossFit grew, Nanos and Metcons became more visible in the public eye as the CrossFit games became televised. Now the two brands are synonymous with the sport, with other brands carving their names out in the space.

Should I wear socks with my CrossFit shoes?

Yes. Not only will they help prevent blisters, they also keep your shoes from smelling like you stuffed them with roadkill between workouts. I recommend taller socks, as this also protects your shins during bar moves like deadlifts and snatches. It’s also a nice extra layer during rope climbs.

How often should I replace my CrossFit shoes?

Normally, we’d suggest that you replace your shoes when they wear out or blow out. However, you should expect to get at least a few years out of each pair before they become unusable. And with new styles and designs coming out every year, you’ll probably be buying shoes before they do.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure I was looking at the future of footwear. I stood on the edge of a cramped booth at the farthest edge of The Running Event in San Antonio. While dominated by running shoe reveals for the upcoming year, the show also housed a smattering of running-adjacent apparel, accessories, and — in the case of the “zipzōn” booth before me — whole new design innovations.

A dozen people sat cheek-to-cheek, jigsawing into the 100 square feet of booth space, each with their own pair of retrofitted prototypes. They all had turquoise adidas shoes that zipzōn had outfitted with its unique lacing system. These were not official adidas shoes, merely proofs of concept and hands-on testers for attendees to try.

A symphony of “click-click-clicks” played percussion, like a chamber orchestra made entirely of palm-sized zip ties. I watched dubiously as everyone continued to play with the unorthodox devices. To my left, Garett Graubins — former Global Marketing Director for BOA and now signed on as a consultant for the upstart brand — peppered me with compelling reasons to take the product seriously.

“It’s about half the weight of dial-based systems and a third the stack height,” he told me. Lighter and lower profile than BOA closures? That’s exactly the kind of performance claims serious runners want to hear.

zipzōn Closure: Laces of the Future?

Again, everything in the brand’s tiny booth was a prototype. And while I played with closing and opening the various iterations (one-, two-, and three-lace options), I have not had the chance to run in them — though I’m promised samples are on their way.

The system looks and feels like something between a zip tie and a classic ski boot buckle, albeit much smaller. A curved plastic track is smooth on top and notched on the bottom. These are the grooves that the zipzōn buckles bite into to create a secure fit.

According to Graubins, a zipzōn closure weighs about 3.5 g, and each click of the lace represents a 1.5mm increment. After I test-tightened the lace, I tugged on it in the opposite direction, at first gently, and then at full force. It didn’t break free. Preliminary, sure. But it did pass.

Releasing the lace took a little trial and error. Because my prototype lace was all white, it wasn’t immediately clear what I should pinch or press. But after a quick examination, I pressed the small tab on the buckle and gently pulled the lace free. No snags and issues once I knew what I was doing.

While Graubins said BOA worked plenty well for some sports and medical applications, he laughingly hedged on identifying any specific instance where he thought the zipzōn wouldn’t be the better bet.

zipzōn: What’s Next?

As yet, zipzōn has not confirmed what brands might adopt the new tech. But the brand did confirm it’s in conversations, and the general reception among other brands has been “positive.”

But there’s reason to believe this brand has traction. Its executive team is laced with former BOA higher-ups, including zipzōn founder and former BOA CEO Mark Soderberg, zipzōn general manager and ex–global business unit director for BOA, Vin Connolly, and a handful of others.

And while there are no production-run shoes equipped with zipzōn to test, the brand said it can retrofit just about any shoe in order to provide testers an opportunity to try it out. That includes everything from hiking and running to basketball and golf. So I’ll have a pair of running, hiking, and daily around-town shoes in the testing mix very soon.

Hiking boots vary dramatically, from heavy, supportive leather boots to ultralight boots based on trail running DNA. For this guide, a range of selections will help you find the right boot based on terrain, weather, and personal preference. Some hikers prefer the lightweight benefits of trail running shoes or dedicated hiking shoes. But I, and many of our editors, prefer boots for many uses. My top choice for general hiking is the Salomon Quest 4. Another Salomon model, the X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is my favorite lightweight hiker. The Merrell Moab Mid 3 Waterproof gets the job done on a budget.

Salomon makes a wide range of hiking boots, but the Quest is its elite model. The latest edition of the Quest is the fourth generation, and it’s lighter, grippier, and more supportive than ever before. We tested the Quest 4 ($230) while hiking through the alpine desert of Western Colorado, as well as through the epic Tour du Mont Blanc through France, Italy, and Switzerland. Our team also used it off-trail as a hunting boot in the Rocky Mountains, pushing it to its limits.

As a real hiking boot, the Quest 4 is exceptional. It has a moderately stiff sole, a robust build, grippy outsole, and great support. Some testers consider it on the heavier side of hiking boots, but after spending literally hundreds of miles in it, I think this is one of the more perfectly balanced hiking boots on the market.

During the tour du Mont Blanc, it held up to long sections of snow, steep rock and mud, and even rushing, knee-deep creek crossings. It feels great on the foot, protecting it from abuse.

This is a serious boot that is designed for backpacking with heavy loads. If you’re seeking a shoe for super casual day hikes and quick warm-weather jaunts, the Quest 4 isn’t it. But this article is meant for hiking and backpacking, so if you plan to take these out on long days or carry a decent amount of weight, they’re a great choice.

The outsole of the Quest 4 has an aggressive tread and widely spaced lugs. Rugged trail conditions should be no problem for these boots — sand, mud, snow, and scree are all well within the capabilities of the Quest 4.

One of the key characteristics of the Quest 4 is its tall ankle height. The high-top design is especially handy while hiking through muck or shallow streams. One of our testers wore these on very deep stream crossings coupled with gaiters, and they stayed incredibly dry in thigh-deep water.

While hauling a fully st￭ backpacking pack, the tall cuff offers noticeable protection against rolling an ankle. However, it also limits mobility and feels a bit clunky for those accustomed to shoes.

Though the Quest 4s are stiff through the sole, they do soften up and break in relatively quickly. A GORE-TEX membrane and water-resistant upper reliably keep moisture out, but the boot’s overall breathability does suffer as a result. This boot runs a little large with a roomy toebox that can easily accommodate wider feet.

Overall, Salomon’s top-of-the-line Quest 4 is an outstanding backpacking boot. If you plan to trek for many miles through variable terrain with plenty of cargo on your back, these are the best hiking boots we’d recommend.

The Salomon X Ultra Mid 5 GTX ($185) is a very comfortable, fairly light, waterproof boot that meets the needs of both backpackers and day hikers. It’s a comfortable fit for many hikers right out of the box. For on-trail use, it put a spring in my step and moved me along quickly thanks to its featherweight design and responsive midsole.

This is a perfect shoe for day hikers and backpackers willing to trade a little support for lighter weight. For many, it will be a goldilocks boot, as it fits most feet well, is light and responsive, and offers modest support.

The X Ultra series has been a top hiking boot for several years. With the latest iteration, released in spring 2025, this boot gets a little more durable and slightly wider in the forefoot, which improves its utility for most hikers.

The Ultra Mid 5 GTX maintains a burly Contagrip outsole for ideal traction for a wide range of surfaces. I used them on dirt-packed and rocky trails, and even steep, rutted-out muddy roads while turkey hunting. They even proved capable hiking steep sand dunes. Whether on quick trips or overnight excursions, they kept me on my feet and in control.

The Ultra 5 update brings a revamped upper to this crowd-favorite, improving durability for the long haul. It maintains the “Advanced Chassis” (ADV/C) introduced in the Ultra 4 edition. This molded insert in the outsole affords solid lateral support while still keeping the front flexible enough for unrestricted movement. This comparative lack of support was a slight complaint with older models, and the brand addressed it well.

This fifth edition also addresses a minor critique of the last model, which sometimes allowed laces to slip free from the single hook eyelets during off-trail travel. For the fifth edition, a more aggressive hook eyelet keeps laces from slipping free during aggressive testing.

Hiking at the Great Sand Dunes National Park during the spring run-off, the GORE-TEX liner proved waterproof, yet reasonable breathability for cold through temperate warm weather. I stood the shallow, flowing Medano Creek at the base of the dunes for more than half an hour and my feet stayed bone dry.

At just under a pound per boot (1 pound, 15.5 ounces per pair — a bit heavier than the previous model), the X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is quite light for a supportive, mid-height hiker with technical capabilities. Overall, they’re a fabulous choice for those who want support in a lightweight boot.

The KEEN Revel IV Polar Boots ($190) are a standout winter hiking boot — delivering a rare balance of warmth, waterproofing, comfort, and traction that makes them ideal for serious cold-weather hiking, snowshoeing, or winter peakbagging. The mid version is rated to –25 °F and the high version to –40 °F. Both boot heights use KEEN.WARM insulation and a heat-trapping insole that kept our testers’ feet warm and dry even during pre-dawn ascents, thigh-deep snow, or long ridge walks in subfreezing temps.

On the technical front, the boots employ a waterproof, breathable membrane under a leather-and-mesh upper that shrugged off snow, slush, and wet conditions during tests. The higher-cuff “High” version adds extra coverage for deep snow and wet conditions, while the “Mid” offers a lighter, more agile stride for long hikes or mixed terrain. The boots’ Polar-Traction rubber outsole delivered consistent grip on packed snow and ice — enough to inspire confidence on steep frozen slopes or rocky mountain approaches.

The comfort and fit round out the appeal: both versions offer a secure heel and midfoot hold, a roomy toebox for thick socks, and a padded collar/tongue that reduces pressure points even under load. Carrying on the Speed Goat tradition, the HOKA Speedgoat 6 Mid GTX ($180) continues to walk the narrow line between hiking boots and hiking shoes — the fact that HOKA makes a wildly popular low-top version makes us a little less reluctant to include it in a guide alongside so many traditional hiking boots. Caveats aside, the Speedgoat 6 is still my favorite ultra-lightweight hiking boot, with notable improvements over the Speedgoat 5.

It’s worth noting that we’re approaching “hiking shoe” territory with these. If this is your jam, definitely check out GearJunkie’s guide to the best hiking shoes here.

If you’re used to hiking in a hightop leather boot, the Speedgoats may look a little underpowered with their all-synthetic uppers, cushy midsole, and elastic ankle cuff. Compared to your daddy’s Danners, they aren’t going to be getting a resole or lasting a generation, but they are usable and comfortable right out of the box if you size them correctly. That’s one of the biggest advantages of choosing a more shoe-like boot. These fit snugly in the heel, allow for some toe splay up front, and fit very true to size.

The ankle cuff on the 6 is quite a departure from the 5, erring on the side of breathability with an elastic and Velcro closure system, whereas the Speedgoat 5 had a higher ankle cuff. The new closure functions like a gaiter — it comfortably cinches snugly around the ankle and keeps out pebbles and sand as well or better than any high-top boots. They do not have as much ankle support as the 5s, so if ankle stability is an issue for you, take a look at the HOKA Anacapa Mid if you’re still keen on the HOKA fit, or the Salomon Ultra 5 Mid.

The mid version of the Speedgoat comes with a GORE-TEX liner, and this is the source of a real gripe. GORE-TEX is breathable, but having no liner at all is even more breathable. Our tester definitely noticed his feet sweating on hotter days. With the elastic ankle cuff, the waterproof portion of the shoe isn’t actually that high up the ankle, so it doesn’t take much of a puddle or very deep snow for water to get in over the top and into the shoe.

So why have the GORE-TEX liner at all? To be fair, our team tested these mainly in the desert region of eastern California, and an East Coaster or someone in the Pacific Northwest has a lot more moisture in the air and on the grass to deal with. I wish there were an option to have the Mid without the liner. 

The Vibram rubber outsole provides plenty of grip on smooth rock surfaces and ball-bearing gravel, on uphill slogs and downhill charges. What really stands out about hiking in the Speedgoats is how step for step, they just feel more like a running shoe than a hiker. Even without cranking on the laces, the heel feels locked in without movement to cause hot spots. This is especially apparent on the downhill.

The ideal fit is a snug, stable heel, with room up front for your feet to swell and splay as the miles stack up, and enough arch to prevent your foot from sliding to the front of the boot on the downhill. The Speedgoat 6 fits our lead tester well, and he was able to experience the sublime balance of security and roominess. While everyone’s foot is different, I think there’s a good chance you’ll get a similar ride.

If you’re trail shoe curious or just want to see what all the HOKA fuss is about, the Speedgoat 6 Mid GTX is a good entry point to the comfy-out-of-the-box experience you get from a lightweight hiker. And for those in the know, they’re a great winter alternative for your favorite HOKA Speedgoat trail running shoes.

Read Review: Memory Foam Molded to Your Feet: Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hiker Review

More often than not, choosing the rugged durability of an all-leather hiker comes with the pain of breaking in a stiff, rigid boot that may or may not fit perfectly at the end of the day. Meindl seeks to remedy this with a unique memory foam liner in its MFS Vakuum Hiker ($310).

The adaptable memory foam made these boots feel comfortable right out of the box. GearJunkie Editor Will Brendza said they “enveloped his feet in a memory foam hug”. That says a lot coming from a guy who prefers all-leather mid-height hiking boots and is no stranger to breaking them in.

Memory foam lines the upper, the back of the heel, and the sides of the boot, and there is also memory foam in the footbeds. Meindl recommends sizing half a size down from your regular size, and Brendza can confirm, finding a perfect fit with a size 10 instead of his usual 10.5.

Most other ways, the Vakuum Hiker can go toe-to-toe with the most heavy-duty of all leather boots. A GORE-TEX liner ensures they stay completely waterproof, and a tough Vibram outsole means the tread will remain grippy for hundreds of miles. 

The six-eyelet and 11-hook lacing system very effectively locks the heel in place and maintains ankle support. There are plenty of adjustment points to dial in the fit. The lacing system is also the source of our major gripe, as the lace hooks will bend if you crank down too hard. They can be bent back in place, but this will weaken them over time. 

Like most all-leather high-top boots, the Vakuum hikers do not breathe well. If you’re worried about your feet cooking, the Salomon Quest 4, with its more breathable synthetic upper, could be a better choice that still offers significant support.

Read Review: SCARPA Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX

Blending the agility of a trail runner with the support of a more traditional hiking boot, the SCARPA Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX ($219) is a welcome update to the original Rush 2. GearJunkie’s testing team thrashed these boots while hiking in the dry, cactus-strewn Texas hill country and in Big Bend National Park, where they proved to be great protection against spiky plants, and much more breathable than an all-leather hiker.

The Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX has a slightly taller ankle cuff than the previous version, which pairs well with the GORE-TEX liner, and allowed our Texas-based tester to slosh through shallow creeks instead of rock hopping. When the creek got too deep and water crested the top of the boots, they dried out fairly quickly.

At about 1 pound, 10 ounces, these boots are some of the lightest in our guide, with some of the all-leather options weighing up to 4 pounds per pair. That weight adds up step after step over many miles, and the Rush 2 Pro mid still offers good protection despite its lightweight. 

The Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX is an excellent option for anyone who wants a supportive, breathable, warm-weather boot. Our testers recommend sizing up a half size from your regular boot size, especially if you have a wide foot.

Read Review: The First Lightweight Hiking Boot With RECCO: SCARPA Moraine Review

The Scarpa Moraine ($179), released in March 2024, is the first lightweight hiking shoe to incorporate RECCO rescue technology — a reflective system that helps search and rescue teams locate lost or injured hikers. Previous RECCO-equipped footwear has been limited to heavy-duty winter and mountaineering boots.

The shoe itself performs as a solid everyday hiker. Built with Nubuck leather and recycled nylon uppers, it hosts Scarpa’s proprietary SuperGum rubber outsole. We never felt like traction was an issue. The 4mm lugs provided a surprisingly good grip on wet rocks and scree. At 1 pound, 4.6 ounces per shoe, it’s one of the lighter hiking boots we’ve tested.

Field testing revealed comfortable out-of-box performance with no break-in required. Compared to the Terrex Free Hiker or the Merrell Moab 3, the Moraine has a narrower, more technical fit. Though not suited for trail running, the boots offer good stability and support for day hiking. The Nubuck leather showed effective water resistance. Breathability is decent at a hiking pace but showed limitations during more intense activity.

Overall, we prefer the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX because it breathes better and it’s lighter weight. If you want a supportive and comfortable boot with a more traditional leather upper, the Scarpa Moraine could be what you’re looking for.

The addition of RECCO technology provides an extra safety measure for backcountry travel, allowing rescue teams to locate the wearer using helicopter-based detection systems. Given that hikers account for approximately one-third of all search and rescue calls, this feature adds meaningful value to an otherwise solid hiking shoe.

Read Review: Slush Runner: adidas TERREX Free Hiker GORE-TEX 2.0 Review

The Adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2.0 GORE-TEX ($220) is another running shoe-esque entry into the boot world, complete with all the perks and pitfalls associated with lightweight boots.

First, the perks — break-in time is quick, and if you nail the sizing, you’ll get a comfortable fit right out of the box. The Boost eTPU foam is shock absorbent and has a great response. A little light jogging in these is totally doable if you’re looking to get some cardio in on slushy days, but they won’t replace your running shoes. I tested the GORE-TEX version and found it much more breathable than the all-leather Keen Targhee IV. If you like the fit and want even better breathability, there is a non-GORE-TEX version available.

The Continental rubber outsole with its 5mm lugs felt solid on gravel and slush — perfect for hiking, but they did feel a little clunky on pavement. 

Fit is a bit of a challenge with these boots. One tester had trouble with pressure points on his ankle, though he was able to get a better fit with some adjustments. Other testers feel the Free Hiker runs large and has too much free space in the heel. I recommend trying a pair on if you have the opportunity, and potentially sizing down a half size from what you normally wear. A roomy fit in the heel can lead to rubbing and, eventually leading to hot spots and blisters, especially on the uphill. 

If you’re interested in a lighter-weight boot and want a little more ankle support than what’s offered by the HOKA Speedgoat 6 Mid, the Free Hiker could be a viable alternative. Conversely, if you’re looking for a lighter boot with an even more running-shoe-like fit, definitely check out the Speedgoats. 

Finally, I received a few comments on the Free Hiker’s style. Some folks think they look pretty cool, and while aesthetics aren’t my first priority on a hike, I’d be lying if I said I don’t care what my boots look like.

Read Review: Rugged, Refined, and Recraftable: Danner Mountain 600 EVO Hiking Boots Review

Danner has had a good run with its Mountain 600 series thus far, first with the original Mountain 600 and then the Mountain 600 Leaf. Now, with its Mountain 600 EVO ($250), Danner looks to expand its Performance Heritage line by expanding its boots’ capabilities. 

The biggest difference between the Mountain 600 and Mountain 600 Leaf was the ability for the Leaf series to be recrafted (resoled). This was a big step for the modern boot world that harkened back to the heritage of Danner and boots like its Mountain Lite’s having the ability to be resolved.

With the Mountain 600 EVO, Danner has paid careful consideration to the midsole and outer sole of the boot to expand its capabilities. All of the Mountain 600 series are ripe for hiking, but the 600 EVO is the first of the line rated for backpacking.

GearJunkie editors tested the 600 EVOs in a variety of conditions, from snow and ice to mud and rain. In doing that, our tester went on short hikes with a daypack and backpacking trips with upward of 30 pounds on his back. In all conditions, the boots remained stable and comfortable. This is due in part to the decision to go with a TPU shank over the nylon shank found in the other Mountain 600 versions.

Compared to nylon, TPU is designed to last longer and is rated for more aggressive terrain and a higher weight load, which is expected when you’re backpacking.

There was an initial concern that the EVO’s ankle, with its minimal cushioning, would not be as supportive as it ended up being. These are the instances where we’re happy to be wrong. The ankle provided just the right amount of support and required little to no adjustment after the second or third time out.

Ultimately, the only problem with the Danner Mountain 600 EVOs was that Danner opted not to include the iconic red or green laces. But rambling over miles of rolling trails proved this boot is a worthy contender.

Want to feel comfortably invincible while charging steep, tricky trails and terrain? The cozy, crazy durable Pedroc Pro Mid PTX Boots ($200) are the boots for you. These are precise, technical hiking boots that boarder on approach shoes, with soft, sticky soles, minimal underfoot padding, and lots of support.

They’re an ideal boot for steep hikes, like Colorado 14ers, or moving quickly over rocky or wet trails.

Our test team and I took the Pedrocs on some wild excursions. Personally, I used them on some really steep hikes in the Rocky Mountains, including a via ferrata route on vertical terrain at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. I found them exceptional on super steep terrain, with good grip on rocks and soil and rock-solid support for such a light boot.

Another tester took them bushwhacking up muddy Appalachian slopes, parkouring through boulder-strewn creek beds, and galivanting over technical alpine terrain. Then, even after serious torture, they look sleek and stylish enough to trot around town after the adventure. Gotta love getting compliments in Target while running errands post-hike.   

Wildly light and capable on technical terrain, the Pedorc Pro Mid PTX are awesome boots. But they are more appropriate for steep, technical trails.

I felt confident bombing down scree slopes or cruising over muddy, root-strewn trails in these, and My legs weren’t exhausted afterward. They seem to shine on speedy missions. The Pomoca Speed Hiker Pro outsole has an aggressive multidirectional lug pattern that grabs sludgy terrain and refuses to let go. Additionally, it almost has that sticky rubber feel of an approach shoe, giving you stability as you navigate rocky terrain.

Designed for speed hiking through rough, unpredictable landscapes, the Pedroc Pro Mid PTX Boots would be great for the hiker who knows they’ll be cranking fast but still needs top-notch protection.

A more traditional backpacking boot, the high-cut Nucleo High 2 GTX ($239) is big news for La Sportiva because it’s the first hiking boot the brand has made for wider feet. The leather boot was protective in the way that only a leather boot can be. It is also waterproof, thanks to a GORE-TEX liner.

Despite the extensive waterproofing, the breathability of the Nucleo High 2 GTX is enhanced by microvents under mesh from the arch of the foot to the ankle along the line of the sole — GORE’s Surround system — which made these more breathable than we would have expected. A Vibram rubber rand and toecap deflected scuffs and rocks, hinting at long-term durability for a very reasonable price point.

The Vibram sole had steady grip climbing, braking traction on descents, and a slightly rockered shape that made it easier to heel into a step and toe out of it. For a more traditional-looking boot, these have a modern feel akin to the HOKA and Altra options mentioned earlier.

Well-padded fabric at the Achilles gave plenty of pressure-free, range-of-ankle movement on steep descents. On rocky trails, a polypropylene stiffener in the midsole protected feet from bruising, an essential feature considering the natural footfall these promote.

If you truly have wide feet, the Nucleo High 2 GTX will likely be too narrow, which is quite common in the footwear industry. While this one is wide for La Sportiva — and it welcomes more hikers than ever to wear the company’s classic European hiking boots — they’re more of a wide medium cut, limiting toe splay for those with a wide forefoot.

If you’re lamenting the change of last because you have narrow feet and have always loved how La Sportiva fits, don’t stress. The brand still offers the Nucleo High in a “normal fit” too.

Read Review: The Keen Targhee IV.

The KEEN Targhee IV ($165) is a lot of hiking boot for a very reasonable price. It packs in a durable leather upper, long-lasting “fused” midsole, and waterproof membrane into a roomy package great for those with higher-volume feet.

The Targhee is an iconic boot in the KEEN lineup. It’s earned a lot of love from both our testers and hikers for its rugged build and versatile features. The 2024 version brings a new technology that KEEN claims makes it much more durable. The boot’s midsole is fused to the upper using a new process that eschews glue. So the brand guarantees that it will never delaminate.

My testing through mud, snow, and rocky trails proved it’s a capable boot ideal for cooler conditions on rough trails. While it’s not a top choice for off-trail hiking or scrambling, it’s a great option for those who put down a lot of miles and want significant support.

KEEN uses its proprietary outsole, which is grippy and effective. While we tend to prefer Vibram, the KEEN outsole works well and keeps the price lower.

Be aware that the KEEN Targhee IV boot runs significantly large. I sized down a half size and some may even want to go down one full size from their normal street shoes.

The Asolo TPS 52 GV EVO ($360) boots have lasted one of our testers for nearly 10 years. She’s taken them on numerous backpacking trips throughout the West, including the Tetons, Wind Rivers, Glacier, and Sawtooths. They’ve proven comfortable, durable, and supportive throughout.

This is a stiffer boot and requires a break-in period. But once broken in, the Asolo TPS 520 feels like an extension of your body, ready for whatever conditions might lie ahead.

The deeply channeled outsoles provide excellent traction and reduce the buildup of debris, and the padded ankle collar is comfortable and useful for keeping rocks out. With a classic mountaineering look, these boots are surprisingly versatile.

We’ve read some complaints of the sole coming off, but have never experienced this ourselves. In doing some research, it seems that most complaints of sole failure are from boots that are 10-plus years old, and any boot that’s left out in the sun or in high-temperature storage is susceptible to weakening.

It’s worth noting that these boots can be resoled, which generally costs around $100, and can make them a boot for life, as has happened with our tester.

Hoka has always been about innovation — and can consequently be quite polarizing. From the inception of their brand, the folks at Hoka have churned out futuristic designs with bleeding-edge tech, in wild color schemes that pop off the shelf.

The Anacapa 2 Mid GTX ($195) brings unique flair to the traditional hiking boot last, seemingly forcing people to either end of the spectrum. You either love ’em, or you hate ’em, but one thing’s for sure — there are few hiking boots like them.

Senior Editor Chris Carter recently got to spend several days testing the low and mid versions of the new Anacapa 2 in Zion National Park with Hoka developers, putting the boots through the wringer and truly picking Hoka’s brain on its interesting design.

While he doesn’t usually pick boots as his steed of choice for long treks, these made quite the impression on him. The supremely tacky outsole, thoughtfully placed Meta-Rocker, and unique Achilles heel cushion, make these shoo-ins for any serious hiker’s shortlist.

The Anacapa 2 has Hoka’s Meta-Rocker technology — a curved silhouette with denser foam placed at strategic points in the midsole, giving each stride a degree of smooth propulsion. The Anacapa 2 Mid has a late-stage Meta-Rocker, which puts the rocker point closer to the toe for added stability with slower paces.

Though our editor prefers an early-stage rocker for swifter movement on the trail, this is perfect for those who want stable confidence over variable terrain, and aren’t too concerned about setting land speed records. For most hikers, this is the design of choice.

Vibram Megagrip — hands down the best outsole — decorates the bottom of the shoe. Its performance on slippery, rocky terrain, or muddy, uneven trails is second to none. Qualms with other Hoka outsoles were addressed with this shoe.

Vibram can be rendered useless if mud packs in tight around the lugs, making the sole a single, sleek sheet that easily slips around. The Anacapa 2 Mid has a “self-cleaning” lug pattern that channels mud away from the lugs as you step, forcing it to slide off the sole, and allowing the deep sticky tread to work its magic. This, paired with a GORE-TEX liner, makes these boots power players in wet, sloppy conditions.

The protruding SwallowTail heel is perhaps the first feature you notice on the Anacapa 2 Mid — and isn’t for everyone. It undeniably provides better traction and stability while bombing down uneven hills, but can sometimes snag on roots and rocks (or even the other boot) as you clunk down the trail.

Another standout feature is the extra, flexible cushioned insert that molds around your Achilles heel. The back of the shoe dips down low, allowing this insert to rock back and forth as you ascend or descend while hiking. In all honesty, this is one of the more cozy heel cups we’ve experienced, and we had zero blister woes during our testing period.

We do find these boots to be sized a bit large, so make an effort to try them on in-store before snagging a pair. These are also on the heavier (and pricier) end of the spectrum, but the comfort and cushion they afford atone for these sins. Nearly every element of the shoe is designed with recycled components, making this a much more sustainable shoe than the previous iteration, without sacrificing longevity.

For a healthy balance of plush comfort and broad stability over rough, wet terrain, it’s hard to beat the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX.

How We Tested Hiking Boots

Meet GearJunkie’s Test Team

The GearJunkie team has tested hundreds of pairs of hiking boots. We’ve hiked along gradual city park paths and backpacked through rugged alpine terrain in our search for the best hiking footwear on the market. The recommended boots on this list are the result of our thorough and never-ending field testing.

I’m Editorial Director Sean McCoy, your guide to hiking boots (and many other subjects, too). I broke trail with this guide back in July 2020, crafting our initial selection of eight worthy hiking boots. Whether packing out a kill from deep in the backcountry or clocking miles on cruiser singletrack — I am intimately aware of the importance of proper footwear for streamlined adventures.

Senior Editor Chris Carter took over this guide in August 2022 through 2024. He combed through his stinky shoe rack, scrubbing through online hiking forums, and endlessly bugging his dirtbag backpacking buds ever since to narrow in on a succinct list.

Chris has thru-hiked the Triple Crown of long trails in the United States: the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail. He knows the importance of properly fitting, comfortable boots for long backpacking trips and is extremely particular about the footwear he depends on in the wild.

He moved on to other work in 2025, and I took back the reigns of this guide, working with the talented team of editors at GearJunkie.

Durability Testing

When I assess a boot for its durability, I wear it regularly and keep a close eye on long-term performance. When we test a boot for support and stability, we trudge through rough terrain and pay extra attention to ground feel and roll resistance.

The boots in this guide have proven worthy over a minimum of five days of hard use. I realize that is a very minimum number, but it’s enough to see initial wear with a practiced eye. This is the wear period that begins to show scuffing on outsoles, wear points on the upper, and initial delamination points.

Most of the boots in this guide have been tested vastly more. I hiked the tour du Mont Blanc in 2024, testing boots with my wife. I hike at least two days a week in Colorado, and spend many hours off-trail exploring with my German shorthaired pointer.

Waterproof Testing

Our waterproofing testing involves exposure to puddles, precipitation, and other elements that you’re likely to encounter on the trail. The boots in this guide all spent a half-hour of direct water exposure in early testing. All GORE-TEX products have also been through GORE’s rigorous water-resistance lab testing.

Our recommendations are not fixed in time. As new hiking boots hit the market, we’ll be waiting to put them to the test. If they’re exceptional, we’ll be sure to add them to this list of the best hiking boots on the market.

Hiking Boots vs. Hiking Shoes

This is one hotly debated topic, both on trails and around the GearJunkie office. In 2025, many hikers prefer hiking shoes, or even trail running shoes, for backpacking and day hiking.

Personally, I find true hiking boots to be the best choice for serious hiking. And by “serious hiking,” I mean carrying a pack with your food, shelter, and equipment for long, multi-day hikes. It usually means long hours on your feet. And it often means rough trails, water crossings, snow bridges, scree, mud, and more. On this kind of hike, I want a burly boot that keeps my feet dry, protected, and capable.

Others may disagree. And boots can often be overkill for short hikes, hot temps, or lightweight backpacking. As an ultramarathon runner, I certainly see a place for hiking in lighter shoes.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Pair of Hiking Boots

Choosing the optimal hiking boot is an ever-complicated and personal endeavor. We all have unique foot shapes and needs on the trail, so research and testing are often critical in finding boots with that perfect blend of fit and function.

Boots built for durability and stability tend to be less forgiving than most footwear. And because you’re often wearing them for hours on end, they require a more precise fit. Here are a few things that can help you find the best boot for your foot.

Hiking Boot Components: Uppers, Midsoles, and Outsoles

Hiking boots — and hiking shoes — are composed of three main components: the upper, midsole, and outsole. The design of each element helps dictate how durable, breathable, and water-resistant the boot is going to be.

Uppers

A hiking boot’s upper is the outer material on the top and sides of the boot. There are a handful of materials commonly used in hiking boot uppers, but generally, uppers are either leather or synthetic.

Leather uppers are more traditional-looking, and they tend to be highly durable and abrasion-resistant. However, they sometimes require long-term care to prevent cracking and unsightly aging.

Synthetic uppers tend to be lighter than leather. They also tend to dry faster and generally cost less. An example of a synthetic upper would be TERREX Free Hiker 2.0 GORE-TEX.

Typically, synthetic uppers are not as durable as leather, but modern advances seem to be closing the gap. For those who prefer not to use animal products, synthetic uppers are obviously the way to go.

Midsoles

A midsole provides underfoot cushioning and adds structural stability to the entire boot. Stiff boots likely come with a thick and stiff midsole, and most often require a break-in period.

Stiffer midsoles provide the most durability, but because they have less give, they can also be harder on the feet. Stiff midsoles are ideal for providing traction on highly technical terrain where foot movement isn’t ideal, such as mountaineering, ice climbing, and movement over variable terrain like talus fields.

Soft and flexible hiking boots are built with thinner, more pliable midsoles. Stiff boots can prevent your feet from becoming tired and sore, but flexible boots may be more comfortable and nimble for fast and light hiking, and they tend to prevent blisters.

Modern hikers engaging in long-distance pursuits are finding that softer midsoles provide the balance of technical performance and comfort they need for extended use, turning to boots like the Altra Lone Peak All-Weather Mid for their long-distance endeavors.

Midsoles are generally made from EVA or polyurethane. EVA is lightweight and soft, while polyurethane is firmer and more durable. If you plan to hike long distances with a heavy pack, either is a viable option, but it really depends on your personal needs.

If you have weaker arches and require support, stiffer midsoles can prevent unnecessary soreness over long distances. If you’re already used to more minimal, flexible footwear, softer midsoles allow the muscles in your feet to function more as nature intended. PCT hikers, for example, are trending toward softer midsoles that limit blistering and strengthen the feet over time.

Outsoles

The outsoles of hiking boots are made of rubber with varying grades of stiffness and grip. Harder outsoles on stiff boots sometimes include additives such as carbon to reduce weight. While extra-stiff outsoles are durable and good for carrying heavy loads, they can feel slick when hiking off-trail.

Stiff outsoles are ideal for scrambling on steep rock or other situations where traction is integral to safety. Softer outsoles are ideal for packed, heavily trafficked trails where technical terrain is less frequent. A boot that bridges this gap quite well is the La Sportiva Nucleo High 2 GTX.

All outsoles include a lug pattern designed to increase traction and grip. Widely spaced lugs are less likely to accumulate mud, while shallow lugs are better for hiking over rocky surfaces.

Some lug patterns are symmetrical, while others have a degree of asymmetry that’s primarily integrated to reflect the natural contours of the feet through the footfall. Both have varying degrees of stiffness, so choosing the right lug pattern tends to be a personal preference.

Some outsoles include a heel brake, which can reduce your chances of sliding while descending steep slopes. Most modern hiking boots integrate a heel brake to some degree, as do most running/hiking hybrid shoes.

Take this into consideration if your backcountry travels are going to take you up and over high-altitude passes or on trails that are particularly steep.

Weight

A pair of hiking boots can weigh anywhere from 1.5 pounds to well over 4 pounds. The weight of your boots will depend on their structure and materials.

Generally, more robust boots with leather uppers and stiff soles will be heavier (such as the Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hiker), while hybrid synthetic models will be lighter (Like the SCARPA Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX)

There is always a give and take with weight. So, heavier boots often prove to have higher degrees of waterproofness and long-term durability, though they may not be the most comfortable options.

Synthetic boots with flexible soles will be lighter and perform more like running shoes. Carrying heavy boots on your feet on long hikes can cause fatigue, but heavy boots also tend to offer more support. As we’ve previously stated, it’s important to know your personal needs and shop accordingly.

In the summer months, it’s not uncommon to see people hiking in rugged lugged sandals. Most often, however, it’s not their first rodeo, and they’ve long developed the foot strength to strip weight and transfer more work to the muscles of the feet.

Support & Stability

If you’re hiking with a heavy load, you’ll most often want some stable and supportive hiking boots. A stiff outsole and midsole in a boot like the Asolo TPS 52 GV EVO add support underfoot. And a nice firm ankle collar supports the ankle joint when missteps over loose ground are a possibility.

Heavier boots tend to have rigid ankle support, whereas lighter hybrid options tend to have more of a sock-like fit around the ankle. Our ankles are intended to have a certain degree of flex, and some have more stable ankles than others. This is another important factor to consider when choosing the best boot for your feet.

Arch support is another key factor to consider, and also depends on your personal preference and foot shape. Some people have higher, active arches and can use boots without much arch support (like the Altra Lone Peak) over long distances without issue.

Most manufacturers limit the amount of arch support they include in the footbed to accommodate a variety of foot shapes out of the box. If you know you need arch support but don’t necessarily need orthotics, more traditional, rigid boots like the Danner Mountain 600 EVO tend to offer more built-in support underfoot.

Traction

Different lug patterns are designed for different kinds of terrain. Although some boot companies make their own outsoles, Vibram soles are still the standard for high-quality outsoles and maximum traction. Vibram makes a wide variety of soles, from extremely stiff soles for mountaineering and scrambling to more flexible soles for running and hiking on packed trails.

Some boots include a smooth section of rubber under the toes for smearing on slabs of rock. Other boots have deep lugs built for soft or muddy trails. Most lug patterns work for a variety of terrain, but if you will be hiking in extreme conditions, look for something more aggressive with larger or pointier lugs.

On steep and loose terrain, a heel brake is a handy feature. This is the defined spot on the heel that helps prevent slippage when walking downhill.

Waterproofing

If you’ll be wearing your boots when it’s rainy, snowy, or cold, get a waterproof and breathable pair. They’ll keep moisture out, which will keep your feet comfortable regardless of how many miles you’re ticking off.

The trade-off between impermeability and breathability is evident in heavier boots, so consider something lighter weight if your feet will be getting wet but not soaked. Generally, the more waterproof a boot is the heavier and less breathable it will be.

There are a few exceptions, however, and modern advances in venting seem to be improving this age-old dilemma, hence our rave reviews of the SCARPA Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX.

If you’re hiking primarily or exclusively in hot, dry conditions, don’t get a waterproof boot. A membrane-free boot will keep your feet cool and dry, and the release of moisture can help prevent blisters. If you live in the high desert surrounded by mountains, you’ll probably need a summer boot and a shoulder season boot for when moisture adds more variability to the trails.

Breathability

As mentioned above, breathability and waterproofness are tied together, for better or worse. The more waterproof a boot is, the less breathable it will be, and vice versa. If you’re hiking in hot, humid environments where you don’t expect to encounter water, a lightweight, ultra-breathable boot is ideal (the HOKA Speedgoat 6 Mid, for instance).

When your feet don’t air out, you increase the risk of blisters and more serious injuries like trench foot (way more common in older, less advanced boots). Breathability not only means that air can move through and out of the shoe, but it also lets water vapor escape. Dry feet stay warmer in colder temperatures as well.

All modern manufacturers take this into account when designing the best hiking boots, so some element of breathability will be built in. Still, it’s an important consideration for your unique feet (sweaty vs. dry), as swampy/cold feet can truly make or break an outing.

Insoles

Not all hiking boot insoles will be a good fit for every foot. Depending on the shape of your foot, you may need to purchase insoles separately. If you have a high arch, look for insoles that cater to this trait specifically.

For hikers who have feet with toes that splay out more than others, or just naturally wide feet, boots with narrow toeboxes can be uncomfortable over long distances. Crampon Compatibility

If you plan to do some major winter hiking or mountaineering, you’ll need boots that work well with crampons. These traction devices are critical for extreme conditions, and they provide traction when crossing steep snow or ice. In general, heavier, stiffer boots are more compatible with crampons.

One way manufacturers can keep prices lower is by using a proprietary waterproof liner instead of jumping on the GORE-TEX wagon, a process that involves licensing, testing, and design requirements to meet the standards of the GORE-TEX brand.

Proprietary liners vary from brand to brand in their degrees of breathability, and GORE-TEX has loads of data (and marketing) that suggests their liner is the most breathable. However, all the proprietary liners are quite effective at keeping water out.

It’s not often I seek out trails with puddles and creeks, but that’s what you do when testing out low-cut waterproof hiking shoes. It’s an important part of my search for a hybrid shoe that’s dialed for hikers, and not necessarily for ultra runners.

The Oboz Katabatic is a great example of a boot brand’s take on the hybrid hiking shoe, as opposed to a running brand’s take. The Katabatic prioritizes stability, protection, and cushioning over ultralight weight and minimalism.

This top-tier trail shoe has been popular for a few years. The (non-waterproof) Katabatic LT women’s version is included in GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Hiking Shoes for Women.

Previous waterproof Katabatic versions used Oboz’s proprietary B-Dry for waterproofing. The latest update to this shoe, the Katabatic LT GTX, foregoes B-Dry and uses a GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane bonded directly to the shoe’s upper, instead. Oboz Katabatic LT Low GTX Hiking Shoe Review

I hiked in the Katabatic LT Low GTX shoes for months, ranging from day hikes to a few low-mileage overnight trips in the Rocky Mountains. I wore them in a wide variety of terrain and mostly mild conditions. My first impression was that they felt like a trail running shoe. They were already broken in after my first long hike in them.

I found the Katabatic LT shoes nimble on quick exertions when speed-hiking up loose-rock climbs and technical terrain. There, the shoe’s secure fit, stable sole, rock plate, and toe guards all proved their worth. Unless you’re scrambling frequently, these shoes and tread will inspire a great deal of confidence and support on your hikes.

No, they aren’t as agile as a running shoe, and at the end of a long day-hike, the Katabatic can feel sluggish. But at 1 pound, 4.6 ounces, they’re competitive with most of the shoes on our guide to the Best Hiking Shoes. In fact, they’d be the second lightest on that list. However, compared to those shoes in our guide to the Best Running Shoes, they’d be the heaviest.

That’s the cost of its protective upper and big-chassis platform. The stiffness that helps propel you throughout the day may also convince your legs that these are best for day or overnight hikes.

Overall, these are very comfortable shoes. While traveling, I even wore them around town (with thicker socks) after I’d chafed my heels in some brand new and ill-fitting Vans. 

Waterproofing

GORE-TEX announced its Invisible Fit technology earlier in 2025. Instead of using a waterproof bootie that slides into the shoe like a sock, the Invisible Fit membrane is laminated directly to the shoe’s upper. That makes the fit more akin to a streamlined runner than a traditional GORE-TEX waterproof hiking shoe.

The Katabatic LT GTX was my go-to mountain hiker from a (surprisingly) rainy spring through fall monsoons. My testing of the low-cut shoe’s waterproof performance was conducted in shallow stream crossings, mud puddles, and sections of unmelted snow on the trails. That said, walking through some dewy grasses here and there, the shoes kept my feet dry, too. The waterproofing is top-notch.

Hikers who spend more time in wetter environments or go for longer hikes may enjoy the added support and coverage of the mid-height Katabatic LT GTX shoes. 

Even in the dry heat of summer, I had no issues with sweaty feet when wearing light socks. The GORE-TEX Invisible Fit seems to breathe as well as the brand claims.

Fit

I have duck feet, so shoes with thinner heels and a wide foot box fit me best. The Oboz Katabatic GTX hits that mark. It has a snug heel, slightly tight midfoot, and a toe box that is just roomy enough.

The collar and lacing both help with a secure fit. The heel stayed put on long inclined ascents, which is where some competing hiker shoes give me trouble. One occasional issue I experienced, usually on long descents, was my foot sliding into the forefoot and feeling a bit cramped by the relatively low volume there.

I had a habit of hastily lacing these too tightly, which is easy because the midfoot barely needs help to fit snug. I’ll say that what feels a tad too tight before leaving the house works itself out on the trail.

Once I took the time to loosen the laces all the way down and really pay attention to how I laced them up, I found just the right fit. Just leave a little wiggle room. Which reminds me, the shoe’s padded tongue helps against lace burn and stays in place.

Cushioned & Rigid Soles

Part of the shoe’s cushion and support comes from the O FIT Insoles, which accentuate the deep heel and provide arch support with EVA foam. The insoles also have denser pockets of cushioning under the heel and forefoot for a bit of squish on harder steps — and surely over the course of a hike, which was more subtle. A wicking top layer on the insole seems like a plus, too.

The Katabatic has a healthy amount of energy return, which I wasn’t expecting. They are springy, for sure. Some of that is in the insole, but there’s also some bounce from the outsole. Much of the shoe’s stability comes from the rugged upper and the platform of the outsole. It can feel stiff when compared to running-brand hiking shoes, but it’s still more relaxed than any hiking boot.

Oboz uses its own Trail Tread rubber compound that has some give, which helps with comfort and confident footing on rocky trails (wet or dry). The multi-directional lugs performed well on various dry surfaces and terrain, shedding mud effectively.

However, the tread showed its limits on wet roots and already slick rocks during creek crossings — admittedly setting it up for failure in some cases. Overall, the traction offers confidence on nearly all stable surfaces. Just exercise caution on the really slippery ones.

Durability

These shoes have clocked dozens of miles, most of which were on fairly clear trails. They got a dusty patina and scuffs, but otherwise have avoided any signs of failure in the upper or seams that would compromise the waterproof membrane, much less the shoe itself. I don’t see the construction as a concern.

Oboz Katabatic LT GTX: Who Are They For?

I think the Katabatic LT GTX is a bit of a niche shoe due to its middle-ground appeal, however warranted. I suspect that younger and ultralight hikers may scoff at the weight, whereas older and more traditional hikers may appreciate the stability and surefootedness in a lighter-than-boot package.

Oboz positions these shoes for day hikes and fast and light overnights. I found the cushioning and stability to be more than enough for such missions, though they may feel heavy after long days. I’m sure there are plenty of ultralight packers who would be happy to wear these for a 3- to 5-day backpacking trip.

I’d recommend these to anyone who pared down to a HOKA Speedgoat or Merrell Moab and found they wanted something more substantial and protective on their feet. Similarly, these would serve as a middle ground for anyone who has hesitated to leave traditional hiking boots for running shoes. I’d also recommend it for anyone who has found the fit of other popular hiking shoes to be too roomy in the heel.

The low-top Katabatic LT GTX version makes sense for anyone who regularly hikes in wet environments. For those in drier climates, the waterproof aspect will still protect your feet from spring or fall mud, shallow water crossings, and is breathable enough to wear on warmer hikes in more arid climates.

Warmth

Few boots we’ve tested can rival the Revel IV Polar for raw warmth. The High version is rated to -40 degrees F, while the Mid is no slouch at -25 degrees F. Both share KEEN.WARM insulation and a heat-retaining insole that locks in warmth even during pre-dawn ascents and long, frozen ridge walks.

Our feet stayed comfortable while breaking trail through thigh-deep snow and standing still for long periods on windy summits. The plush fleece lining feels instantly inviting, and both versions balance insulation with breathability. The Mid breathes a little better on climbs, while the High traps warmth longer in deep snow or subzero temps.

Weather Protection
