The earthquake that struck Myanmar in March 2025 left a huge impact on Yoon Myat Su Lin. The death, destruction, and fallout from that tragedy stuck with the 22-year-old Myanmar fashion student studying at Esmod Tokyo. So, Lin started thinking outside of the box — way outside of it — and began designing an outfit she’s calling the “Adaptable Shelterwear Collection.”

“Seeing how suddenly people can lose their homes made me think about clothing not just as fashion, but as something that could protect and support people in emergency situations,” Lin told GearJunkie. “I wanted to imagine clothing as a portable shelter — something you already have on your body that can transform when you need it.”

This project was for the YKK Fastening Awards, a contest focused on fastening products, like zippers, snaps, hooks, buckles, and buttons. It has become one of the premier fashion contests in Japan. Lin said that students were given 2 months to finalize designs.

At the end of that period, she had created something that even we at GearJunkie have never seen before. And for it, she won a Special Award at the YKK fashion event.

“I hope it makes people rethink what clothing can do,” Lin said. “I wanted to explore new possibilities and new functions for garments beyond their traditional role.”

Adaptable Shelterwear: Part Function, Part Fashion

The Adaptable Shelterwear Collection comprises several pieces. The garment itself is made from ripstop nylon, just like a lot of outdoor apparel and outerwear.

The backpack sleeves attach to the arms via zippers, Lin explained, and can be removed and used like regular backpacks. The tent stores inside the jacket’s pockets and can be detached from the jacket if you don’t want to wear it.

To deploy the tent, remove the panels, connect them with zippers, insert the tent poles, and voilà! You’re wearing a tent.

“The functionality itself is quite simple and easy to use, so I believe anyone could use it,” Lin said. “However, at this stage, the garment is still a bit heavy because of the design details and embellishments. Right now, it sits somewhere between functional wear and an experimental fashion piece.”

Experimental, indeed. The Adaptable Shelterwear Collection takes convertible zip-off pants 10 steps further. It combines the concept of an avalanche airbag with a tent. It allows you to wear shelter and use your luggage as apparel.

Lin’s design turns everything about gear and fashion on its head — which was exactly what she was hoping to achieve.

“As a student, I created this project by myself to turn my imagination into reality and to express my thoughts to the world. It may not be perfect, but it represents my ideas, concerns, and dreams as a designer.”

Cozy, fashion-centric, and comfortable for layering, the REI Co-op Norseland Down Parka ($229) continues to shine as a fan favorite, even after many evolutions and winters in our wardrobes. We loved the snug, fleece-lined hood from Gunnison, Colorado, to British Columbia’s Sea-to-Sky corridor. With stellar construction, eco-conscious materials, and attention to detail, this is one of our most adored women’s winter jackets — plus, the price doesn’t break the bank. Not to mention, expanded sizes — 1X to 3X — were introduced several seasons ago and will continue this winter. The other size block goes from XS to XL. 

While walking Vancouver’s gusty streets and snowy sidewalks in Whistler, the Norseland’s wide storm flap with snaps covered the front zipper, helping to alleviate wind. (We wish the snaps weren’t so shallow, making it easier to pin them closed.) While the jacket isn’t the most packable, it st￭ surprisingly well in tester Meghan LaHatte’s ski bag. 

Its 36.5-inch center back length offers generous coverage through the hips and upper thighs without feeling too cumbersome. Two 6-inch side zippers expand the hem for climbing stairs, sitting, or stepping into a car. (We did notice the zippers tend to slide up as we move.) The slightly flared hem adds a flattering shape, too. 

The exterior nylon face and recycled polyester liner are treated with nonfluorinated DWR to shrug off snow and light rain. We stood in heavy, wet flakes for 45 minutes waiting for a table at a busy restaurant, and stayed warm and dry despite the jacket not being waterproof. The Norseland dried quickly overnight when hung to air out. 

Despite only 650 fill, this jacket feels like a toasty sleeping bag, even in freezing weather, likely due to a heavier weight loaded into each baffle. The duck plumage is environmentally sourced with 80% recycled down. Synthetic fill — 120 g of polyester — rounds out the insulation around the backside and hood’s rim. Buttery fabric lines the deep hand pockets. An interior zippered chest pocket is easy to access. Dense, lengthy wrist cuffs help bar the breeze and snow.

Applause aside, the Norseland would benefit from a soft chin guard, as the nylon material and seams may irritate wearers with sensitive skin. Albeit insulated and warmly lined, the hood could be too streamlined for layering bulkier accessories like headphones or ear muffs. However, overall, the Norseland Down Parka is spacious and functional. While the Rab Women’s Deep Cover Down Parka is lengthier with a higher fill power, it’s also slightly more fitted and articulated. If you’re looking for even more affordability, the Mountain Warehouse Florence Women’s Long Insulated Jacket is a comparable silhouette at nearly half the cost. But at this price point, the Norseland offers excellent value. From crisp Colorado mornings to soggy coastal evenings in Canada, this Down Parka reminded us what warmth and freedom of movement should be.

The Columbia Women’s Pike Lake III Long Jacket ($200) is a robust coat with plenty of length and fever for blustery days when you want to bundle up completely. Lined with Columbia’s Omni-Heat, the thermal-reflective layer retains body heat and keeps us well-insulated during some frigid Colorado evenings and mornings. This coat has a generous center back length of 45 inches that reaches our shins. The bottom of the Pike Lake has three vertical snaps that, when opened, offer more range when needed. The additional mobility was especially nice for hikes and jumping into the car.

Another major advantage of the Pike Lake III is the sizing inclusivity as it’s readily available in standard sizes XS-XXL and plus sizes 1X-3X. Do note that the plus sizes have a longer center-back length at 47 inches. In terms of fit, this jacket runs slightly big, but has a uniform silhouette that allows for plenty of layering. 

Now, let’s talk about the details. The Pike has two spacious zippered pockets located at the hips. These are great hand warmers, as well as a good spot to stash keys and other little must-haves. There’s an internal pocket discretely located near the chest for a cell phone or wallet. If you want to adjust the fit of the Pike Lake, simply cinch the internal waist drawstrings. 

When the wind and snow ramp up, the hood is also easily tightened with the pull cords located at the collarbone of the cote. These adjustable parts of the jacket can play a huge role in keeping your body protected and firing while you’re outside, facing gnarly elements. 

The insulation and shell of the Pike Lake III are 100% recycled polyester. On Columbia’s warmth scale, this piece scores a 3, which is the highest number their jackets can achieve. Less robust coats like the Columbia Women’s Heavenly Long Hooded Jacket score a 2. Even on 20-degree Fahrenheit nights in the dead of winter, the Pike Lake III did a remarkable job at keeping us comfortable. With sleek style, the Patagonia Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka ($699) is a fully functional down parka or standalone shell. The two pieces zip together for the most warmth and protection from precipitation. While the piece costs and weighs more than other jackets on our list, you’re essentially getting two jackets that can be worn three ways. 

After testing the older version and the newest iteration, we fully approve of the updates. This season, the fit is straighter rather than the former slim, hourglass shape, allowing for more range of motion, stepping into the truck, mounting a cruiser, and simply layering beneath. The length was increased and remains above the knees but below the backend, so our hindquarters can stay warm when we sit on a cold seat. The baffle design along the sides was altered from chevron to more vertical to help increase warmth. 

If you’re running around town, heading to work meetings, or want to look good at an outdoor winter (or rainy summer) concert, this jacket has style and function for a range of weather conditions. Senior Editor Morgan Tilton tested the jacket in single digits on winter mornings in Crested Butte, Colorado, navigating a blizzard and ice-coated sidewalks in downtown Ogden, Utah, and at a monsoon-showered summer music festival at 9,000 feet in Telluride. The jacket never got drenched while keeping us very cozy. The outer shell repelled drops of rain and didn’t soak through, and the shell’s ergonomic hood fits well over a front-brim hat or a beanie. The knee-length design helped protect our thighs and backside from the rain, which was perfect when we forgot rain pants. We love the brushed tricot lining in the two hand pockets, which are super roomy and can easily fit a large phone. 

The shell is made from 100% recycled polyester, up from 50%, which is sourced from collected plastic bottles. The Tres’s sustainability features don’t stop there. This exterior shell’s lining is 100% recycled. The interior insulation layer is filled with duck and goose down that’s reclaimed from retired products. The insulated jacket’s shell and lining are both 100% recycled polyester. All of the textiles are Bluesign-approved, made in a Fair Trade Certified factory, and coated with a PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent) for water resistance. The jacket also meets Patagonia’s in-house H2No Performance Standard, following multiple years of testing for waterproofness, breathability, and durability. 

Lovely fleece lines the shell’s interior collar, brushing the face as well as around the entire insulated neck of the down jacket. We love that the cuff on each arm has a slender zipper, so you can expand the width for larger gloves to slide beneath. A side zipper also lets you expand the circumference of the jacket if you need to sit at a wider stance. Overall, this 3-in-1 retains a flattering cut. The shell alone also offers a nice amount of warmth — more than a typical lightweight rain shell. 

When paired with the down parka, the set is warm for frigid days. For supreme versatility, the Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka is one of the best winter jackets you can find. While the Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket is made with a windproof, waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, it’s directly exposed to the elements while the insulated layer of the Tres is protected by a separate 2-layer waterproof-breathable piece: If you live in the Pacific Northwest, or another equally rainy climate, we’d recommend the Tres.

Sometimes, a long winter parka can just feel too cumbersome on those active winter days when you want to keep things light and easy to move in. This is where the KUHL Spyfire Parka ($339) comes into play. Part of the Spyfire series from KUHL — which consists of a vest, down jacket, and down hoody — this 800-fill coat kept us plenty warm on winter hikes and snowshoe excursions. We appreciated the length and silhouette, which provided ample width for movement while retaining a greenhouse effect in the torso and hip area. 

The Spyfire is constructed with a 20-denier nylon fabric that’s lightweight and tear-resistant. Our tester wore this jacket on several winter hikes in various temps from 20 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Even while bushwhacking through some overgrown sagebrush in gusty conditions, the insulation and material of this parka held up quite well. When it was time to remove the coat, it easily stashed into a backpack thanks to its ultra-light textiles and compressible natural down insulation. 

In terms of the parka’s water resistance, the DWR finish helped the surface bead off moisture from snow and rain, but we were especially impressed by the fabric’s ability to ward off moisture near the shoulders. This part of the jacket is evidently reinforced and provides protection where you would need it most. With strategically designed baffles, the front and back have a greater volume of insulation, while the sides and sleeves have smaller baffles for less bulk.

Between the calculated baffles and streamlined silhouette, it’s hard to find much wrong with this parka. While the wrist gaskets are super soft and silky, we wish they had thumbholes for added security and warmth on the hands. If you’re an active woman who needs a packable parka that can move with you on chilly winter or fall days, give the Spyfire Parka a shot.

As a 600 fill, the down is recycled waterfowl and RDS certified. We found the Arctic Parka performs well in bitingly cold temps. Furthermore, the waist is adjustable via a shock cord in the left-hand pocket, which can help hold in heat in the torso area while locking out moisture.

The two-layer shell is durable while also being windproof and waterproof, thanks to the seam-sealed design and a non-PFC DWR finish. To boot, the jacket’s main fabric, as well as the pocket and jacket lining, is made from 100% recycled fabrics, making this parka pretty earth-friendly.

The Arctic Parka has a streamlined silhouette that still allows plenty of room for layers underneath. It’s also quite size-inclusive with options ranging from XS-XXL and plus sizes 1X-3X. For our petite tester, the 35.25″ center back length fell to just above her knee, a comfortable length that provides both coverage and mobility. 

When testing this coat in frigid winter and early spring temperatures, around 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, we found that the arms were not as insulating as the main torso. We also felt that the wrist gaskets were placed in a position that made full arm mobility a bit restrictive. But we loved the brushed tricot lining against the face and the taffeta liner in the pockets of our hands.

In a heritage-inspired design with reliable cold-weather performance, the Stio Women’s Turnbolt Down Jacket ($249) is a silhouette that’s fresh yet timeless. With a subtly cropped, relaxed shape and a soft-brushed exterior, it delivers a laid-back, slightly rugged aesthetic that served us well throughout the shoulders of winter in Crested Butte, Colorado, and Rossland, British Columbia. We loved pulling on the Turnbolt to socialize around town, ride our cruiser on snowy streets, and take winter walks. While we prefer a hooded and longer cut for windblown, well-below-freezing days, we are obsessed with this jacket’s pocket design, style, and compactness. 

Functional features elevate its usability. We loved the two humongous hand pockets with buttery soft tricot lining, which we reserved for our hands to slide into. Layered above the hand pockets are two very large, well-integrated zippered pockets with snap flaps. They’re large enough to fit a huge phone, yet the weight and load are seamless and imperceivable. It’s hard to find an arrangement of pockets that’s so brilliantly spacious and secure without taking up precious real estate that our digits crave warmth. Inside, there’s a smaller zippered chest pocket that’s great for a key or wallet. 

The Turnbolt’s Western yoke detail nods to Stio’s Jackson Hole roots. Both aesthetic and functional, the yoke — the shaped section of fabric that lies across the shoulders in the front and back — distributes stress across the shoulders and increases comfort. Under the surface, the 650-fill goose down — ethically sourced and certified by the Responsible Down Standard — offers impressive loft and warmth. Oversized baffles keep the insulation evenly distributed and heat locked in. In freezing conditions, we found this fill amount to serve us well, and the relaxed fit allows for layering beneath but doesn’t feel oversized. 

Though this jacket reaches the hips, the drawback of a shorter length and hood-free design is having less material to block gusts or wet snowflakes. That said, the jacket’s insulated and stylish collar is warm, stands upright, and has a hidden snap closure. One caveat: The collar splays open and can catch snowflakes or a cold breeze. Also, we routinely forgot that the zipper ends at the bottom of the collar, not the top. Layering on a scarf and beanie is a great option for a neckband style like this. The outer fabric is a blend of 50-denier polyester and 70-denier nylon for the accent material, the latter of which has 50% recycled content. The face is treated with a PFAS-free, durable, water-repellent treatment that sheds light precipitation and blocks moderate wind. During the shoulder season, we were able to walk 20 minutes in a downpour of rain, and the jacket didn’t soak through, nor did it appear damp upon being hung. 

Inside, a silky polyester taffeta lining with a stunning paisley pattern feels smooth and provides quick-drying comfort, given it’s likewise treated with a PFAS-free DWR. Super-soft fleece discreetly lines the interior cuffs, helping to seal in warmth without sacrificing comfort. At 681 g, the Turnbolt is a lighter-weight, lofty down-fill design. In comparison, the hooded Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket has 650 fill and weighs 737 g. With a slightly longer cut and hood, the REI Co-op Norseland Down Parka is a 650-fill design that weighs 970 g. Despite feeling airy, the Outdoor Research Coldfront Down Jacket ($300) delivers an impressive amount of warmth. We tested this ultra-lofty jacket during an intense Arctic storm with temperatures dipping to -29°F (you read that right). Even in those bone-chilling conditions, the Coldfront proved itself, becoming an essential layer in our daily winter wardrobe. The 700-fill goose down kept our torso and arms warm, and the material helped to block wind, even when the wind chill was at its harshest. Plus, the adjustable waist — which easily cinches with two elastic pulls — increases protection against the elements by blocking out any wind drafts.

In terms of fit, the Coldfront has a hip, boxy aesthetic and silhouette. The 25-inch center back length is comparable to the Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket, and the length is a little shorter than the Colter. For those wanting more coverage for their hips and thighs, we recommend grabbing a longer style than the Coldfront. However, for our tester, Meghan LaHatte, who often hikes with her dog through snowy trails, the shorter length offered greater mobility.

The garment itself is slightly oversized compared to other winter jackets we’ve tested, so be sure to downsize if you prefer a more fitted feel and look. The extra room, however, makes layering a breeze, which we appreciated for adding a midlayer or two on frosty mornings before shoveling snow. Also, the adjustable waist lets you tweak the jacket’s fit for a more tailored look when strolling around town.

One minor drawback of this coat is the absence of a zippered chest pocket. While there’s an interior mesh pocket for stashing keys or gloves, it lacks a secure closure, leaving us hesitant to store valuables there. That said, this small issue didn’t take away from the overall appeal of the jacket. In terms of durability, the 53% recycled ripstop Pertex Quantum Eco shell held up well, especially in windy conditions. The jacket has decent water resistance, but we recommend pairing the Coldfront with a shell or wearing a jacket with more waterproofness if you live in a wetter winter climate.

Overall, the Coldfront Down Jacket for ladies is a solid, affordable winter design. On days when the temps were well below zero, and the windchill worsened the Antarctic conditions, this jacket kept our core and arms toasty. We recommend this reliable puffer for women who live in freezing climates with drier snow and for women who want a stylish insulator that’s easy to shrug on in the morning.

If you want to walk around in what feels like a big, warm blanket all day, then swoop up a Lands’ End Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat ($290) for its full-coverage insulation and overall coziness. This maxi-length parka is not only fashion-forward but also available in a plethora of sizes, including petite, regular, and tall styles, as well as plus sizes. For petite and regular cuts, the jacket has a size run of XS to XL. The tall version is available in S to XL, while the plus sizes run from 1X to 3X (16W to 26W). It’s safe to say the Down Maxi offers the greatest variety of dimensions among our favorite jackets. 

In terms of warmth, the Down Maxi provides impressive insulation for the price. With 600-fill power down plus a water-resistant face fabric, this parka stays heated when the temperatures and snowflakes drop. According to the brand’s warmth rating, this piece is calculated to withstand from -25 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, well below freezing. This jacket sits on the hottest end of the Lands’ End spectrum, and gear tester Meghan LaHatte found that these calculations added up upon testing the jacket in frigid nighttime temps in Aspen and Crested Butte, two Colorado ski towns that get hit hard with winter.

While the down insulation is splendid, we were also huge fans of the coat’s length, which provides full body coverage. At 5’3″ tall, the regular length fell to just above LaHatte’s ankles and kept not only her torso warm but her lower extremities, too. While this length can restrict mobility, users can simply unzip the bottom side panels to unlock increased range for the legs.

One of our few issues with this Winter Coat is the exterior pockets. Instead of a zipper for closure, they have one singular button that does not completely secure the pocket. This could allow small items like keys or coins to slip out and allow for moisture to enter. However, we did find the fleece pocket lining to be soft and summery for our hands. In the long run, the Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat is a budget-friendly winter coat that doesn’t skimp out on real estate, roast, or elegance. We recommend this jacket for women needing head-to-ankle warmth for the winter, and the cut is longer than the Rab Women’s Deep Cover Down Parka.

Lightweight and budget-friendly, the Mountain Warehouse Florence Women’s Long Insulated Jacket ($130) is a decent winter layer for those who don’t want to spend multiple hundreds on a coat. In addition to offering adequate warmth, we couldn’t get over how this jacket felt like putting on a soft, plush robe, thanks to its super smooth material. 

At a bottom-shelf price, the Florence is pretty impressive despite the tag. Our tester wore this piece across a broad temperature spectrum on dog walks. From 18-degree dark evenings to slightly warmer days at 37 degrees, this coat kept her perfectly comfortable without ever breaking a sweat. We did find that 10 degrees was this jacket’s insulation threshold (not the lab-tested -22 degrees Fahrenheit that’s listed). 

This long jacket has a streamlined fit that slightly hugs at the waist while leaving room around the hips for mobility. We could easily hike, but stepping onto a truck’s running boards was a little tight. That said, we appreciated the length, which brushed the tops of our knees but wasn’t too cumbersome or long. 

Rather than a few general sizes, this Mountain Warehouse jacket is available in numeric sizes from 0-20. We used the sizing chart to find our size, and it worked perfectly. We usually layered on a thin long-sleeve or an additional fleece hoodie mid-layer, and the jacket still fit well. 

The surface is treated with a DWR finish that did well beneath flurries, but if we were walking in the rain or wet snow, we’d probably pair this jacket with a wind shell or raincoat since Florence doesn’t have much in the waterproof or windproof department. If you live in a mild winter climate that stays pretty dry or receives dry snowfall, like in the Southwest U.S., this jacket would probably be sufficient for the majority of your winter conditions. Plus, the fill is synthetic, so it will inherently provide warmth even when it’s wet, unlike down. 

The Florence Women’s Long Insulated Jacket is a comfortable, affordable option and a pretty solid winter jacket. If you’re looking for a similar length with down fill, read up on the REI Co-op Norseland Down Parka, which costs about double but also offers smaller and plus sizes compared to the Florence. With a very similar aesthetic, the Lands’ End Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat is likewise double the price and filled with HyperDry down that repels water and retains warmth.

rFrom early morning dog walks to date night strolls, the Marmot Women’s Chelsea Coat ($380) is among the more durable and cozy winter jackets we’ve worn. This mid-length coat falls above the knees. The construction is waterproof and highly insulating thanks to the 700-fill Kapok Down, a natural down alternative derived from tree seeds that are combined with synthetic fibers. Available in four neutral color options, the Chelsea has an overall loose-fitting silhouette that’s perfect for midlayers and maneuverability. Our petite 5’3” tester opted for a size small for extra room but easily could have fit into an extra small. 

This practical, stylish trench coat is designed with a highly durable shell that’s moisture-proof thanks to the NanoPro treatment, which is used on polyester fabrics to make them hydrophobic for snowy and rainy conditions. Even while walking the dog on cold mornings at around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we stayed warm and well-protected out in the elements thanks to the toasty insulation. 

And while we were impressed by the textiles, we found that the collar was too stiff and abrasive when zipped up, which irritated our face. This could be mitigated by wearing a scarf or neck gaiter, but that can be bothersome for folks who don’t need to layer up that much. 

Women with cold hands and fingers will certainly appreciate the fleece wrist gaiters and fleece-lined zippered hip pockets. Our tester, who suffers from Raynaud’s syndrome — a chronic decrease in blood flow to the phalanges — was ecstatic about the cozy pockets that kept her fingers warm when tucked in.

This 800-fill Lands’ End Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat ($240) is a warm hug on a freezing day. This knee-length jacket protects our pants from getting soaked when we’re knocking snow off the rig and keeps us warm when running errands. Based on Senior Editor Morgan Tilton’s testing, this jacket is the perfect choice for heading to the gym or riding a bike around town in cold or snowy weather. For this amount of protection at close to $200, this jacket is a steal.

At a Lands’ End temperature rating of 3 to 29 degrees, this jacket is meant to keep you cozy, and we found that spectrum to be accurate. The jacket is filled with HyperDry down, so the down repels water and retains warmth. Plus, HyperDry is fluorocarbon-free, and the fill is Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified. The water-resistant shell and liner shielded snow and weather well.

While we don’t mind the fixed hood, there’s no soft liner along the interior chin guard (though it’s not rough, either). While there are two zippered hand pockets, an interior chest pocket would be a nice addition. Feathers also occasionally sneak out of the seams. There are no side zippers along the hem for expansion if you’re climbing in and out of a vehicle. 

But we love how basic and beach-delivering this coat is. Albeit not as robust and fancy as our pricier choices, we found the simple design of the Women’s Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat to be surprisingly durable and easy to pull on while delivering powerful insulation.

Living up to the high-end hype, the sophisticated yet tenacious Arc’teryx Patera Parka ($800) is one of the most solid winter jackets for ladies out there. This waterproof-breathable and windproof parka is perfect for gust-pushing, moisture-intensive places with sub-freezing temps. 

While we’ve tested multiple iterations of this jacket, we donned the current Patera over one of the wettest, coldest winters Colorado has seen in recent years. From very low temps to blustery conditions, this coat held up well and kept us quite warm, even with minimal layers beneath. Namely, gear tester Meghan LaHatte donned this layer while working several 12-hour shifts photographing the Aspen X Games. The gig entailed climbing up the superpipe, running between venues, and standing for countless hours with a camera in hand despite single and negative digits — this jacket delivered excellent insulation and coverage for the job, plus the look was sleek.

We liked that the jacket had targeted zones to help withstand the weather. For instance, Arc’teryx utilizes toasty 750-fill-power goose down combined with strategically placed synthetic insulation in parts of the coat subjected to more moisture, like the collar and hood. That Coreloft polyester fill ranges from 60 to 80 grams, is 80% recycled, and is Bluesign-approved — so it’ll provide insulation even if in wet snow, but hopefully, that synthetic fill offsets the cost a bit. Also, for the eco points, Arc’teryx employs RDS-certified down. Rounding out the sustainability, the 2-layer GORE-TEX membrane and fabric meet Bluesign criteria, and the liner features recycled nylon, all of which is a variable that adds to the cost. 

Minimalist and contemporary, this coat has no flashy elements, and the silhouette is streamlined, providing plenty of room in the torso and waist for layering. We appreciated the modern, timeless colorways this jacket is available in. Not only is this coat designed with waterproof GORE-TEX, but the lining is DWR-treated, further increasing this jacket’s ability to fight off moisture and retain insulation. Even while walking and hiking in blizzard conditions, the Patera did a superb job at keeping the snow out and heat in. As for arm length, the cuffs reach the wrists but no farther, which can be good compatibility with gloves, avoiding a traffic jam.

We appreciated the broad, sturdy brim that’s integrated into the insulated hood to help block precip. The two-way zipper on the front allows you to expand the width around your legs if needed, like if you’re mounting a bike. The zip closures on the hand pockets are super water-resistant. While this jacket is very expensive, it’s a technical gem, providing top-tier protection, a clean look, and environmental peace of mind. With a two-way zipper that is easy to open and close, a classic silhouette, and a highly durable, waterproof construction, the Patera Parka is a winter jacket that continues to impress us. Invest in this parka if you live in a wet, freezing climate that requires a long-lasting winter jacket that’ll serve many seasons.

We’ve never received so many compliments on a winter jacket as the Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket ($429). Moderately priced among our women’s winter jackets, the thoughtful, environmentally sound design celebrates feminine and delicate details. At first, we thought this roomier style might be a bit too puffy — but every time we pulled it on, we realized how warm, comfortable, durable, and well-tailored this jacket is.

With a fantastic amount of stretch, we could easily reach over the hood of our rig to clear away snow or wrap our arms around large packages at the post office. The buttery taffeta fabric lines the interior — our chin loves its guard. Two-way zippers run from the armpit to the hem along each side of Colter’s GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER fabric, giving us a greater range of motion, a looser fit, or some underarm airflow. Beneath the zipper, a 5.5-inch mesh panel at the upper section offers ventilation, while a fabric inlay at the lower section shields us from the elements.

Few jackets offer more stowaway space. Both zippered hand pockets feature a very soft brushed tricot liner. One interior chest pocket closes with a zipper, and the other with a snap. Two deep, lower-placed interior pockets also include flap closures. We love this jacket’s length, which hugs our hips but still allows for a vast range of motion. We also love the angled cuffs that cover our dorsums. The baffles stand out — they’re huge. Given how toasty the jacket feels, the fill weight must sit on the higher side to deliver this level of warmth with 650 fill power.

Even better, the brand designed this jacket with the planet in mind. They used 100% recycled polyester for the outer fabric and treated the shell and liner with a PFAS-free DWR finish. GORE-TEX built the 2-layer WINDSTOPPER fabric with its progressive ePE membrane, which is also PFAS-free. The goose down meets Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification.

The Colter Down Jacket is a go-to for anyone seeking a tenacious, attractive, oven-ly, and healthily made women’s winter jacket. Compared to the REI Co-op Norseland Down Parka, this jacket runs shorter, hugs the hips more, and has a snugger hood — but the Norseland makes an excellent alternative at a lower price.

Read Review: Warmth That Won’t Weigh You Down: Outdoor Research Coze Women’s Winter Jacket Review

A winter jacket doesn’t need a long list of features to perform well, and the Outdoor Research Coze Down Parka ($399) proves just that. With its simple design, generous length, and impressive warmth, this parka quickly became a favorite for cold-weather outings. Plus, the tall insulated collar, which is connected to the plush hood, enhances warmth and eye-catching style. Made with 700-fill responsibly sourced down and a bluesign-approved shell and lining, the Coze is warm and environmentally friendly. We wore it through a variety of conditions — from crisp, sunny days to full-blown blizzards with heavy gusts. Despite the elements, the toasty Coze delivered. 

What stood out most was its lightweight feel. At just over 2 pounds, it’s pretty easy to pack into a duffel bag or suitcase for weekend getaways and travel. The pillowy-soft hood accommodates even thick fleece hats, and the tricot-lined chin guard prevents chafing — small but thoughtful details that add to its comfort. We also took the Coze out for a blustery dog walk in 20°F temps with sustained 35 mph winds, and it held up impressively. The wind-blocking nylon shell paired with the down insulation and longer cut offered serious protection — no drafts, no chills, just solid warmth from start to finish.

When it comes to fit, the Coze runs true to size but could benefit from more extended sizing options. Available in XS to XXL, it would be great to see Outdoor Research offer petite and tall versions in the future, as well as a plus-size run. That said, the streamlined silhouette allows plenty of room for layering without feeling bulky. Like the Columbia Women’s Pike Lake III Long Jacket, the Coze doesn’t skimp on length. Tester Meghan LaHatte, who is 5’3″, found that it hit below the knee, offering full-body protection on windy days. The hem zippers were a nice touch, providing extra mobility for getting in and out of a truck without restriction.

For a $400 jacket, we wish there were more size options, and it’d be nice to see a more waterproof material. But the water-resistant, wind-squelching, and full-length design makes it a solid choice for snowy days and chilly urban strolls. With soft, premium materials and a relatively streamlined fit, the Coze Down Parka is a versatile winter staple with an attractive roll-neck and hood design.

If you endure the coldest, most brutal winters but refuse to sacrifice style for functionality, the Fjallraven Nuuk Parka ($500) is a top contender. While it’s a hefty investment, this jacket is fully waterproof, windproof, and built to handle extreme conditions.

We put the Nuuk through its paces during a typical winter in Gunnison-Crested Butte, CO, where temperatures regularly drop below zero, and biting winds make even a short walk feel like an expedition. Thanks to the Hydratic shell (100% polyurethane), we stayed warm and dry no matter the conditions. The Nuuk became our go-to for morning dog walks before work, when the conditions were the coldest and dampest.

Where the Nuuk really stands out is its storage capacity. Women’s garments often lack functional pockets, but this coat offers a whopping ten —enough to carry a wallet, phone, keys, lip balm, and more, with room to spare. It’s like wearing a well-organized satchel, eliminating the need for a bag on casual outings. One small drawback we noticed was its ability to attract dog hair and lint. If you have pets, expect to keep a lint roller handy — especially after coming home to enthusiastic greetings. That said, this minor inconvenience didn’t take away from this parka’s stellar performance in harsh weather.

At around 4 pounds, the Nuuk isn’t particularly packable. But for those living in brutal winter climates — think high humidity, harsh wind, low temps, or heavy snowfall — it’s a worthy trade-off for durability and warmth. We especially appreciated the adjustable hood and removable faux fur trim. Reattaching the trim can be tricky at first, but the buttons become easier to maneuver.

Much like the Patagonia Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka, the Nuuk is made with recycled materials and avoids animal-based down. As one of the warmest jackets in our lineup, it’s a reliable choice for days when stepping outside feels like a battle against the elements. For anyone facing subzero temperatures and relentless wind, and ladies who prefer to stroll without a purse, the Fjällräven Nuuk is an investment worth making.

How We Tested The Best Winter Jackets for Women

Our GearJunkie team has field tested and reviewed dozens and dozens of women’s winter jackets. We’ve used these layers in various cold-weather conditions over the past few years and five iterations of this guide.

Our Testing Grounds

Tilton primarily tests winter jackets in Crested Butte, Colorado, pulling on a warm winter coat before and after ski outings. She tests jackets while running errands and shoveling the truck, trailer, snowmobile, and walkway — you name it. Living in a frigid ski town, Tilton puts these winter coats to the ultimate test.

LaHatte’s testing has primarily spanned Carbondale’s Roaring Fork Valley and Gunnison Valley, the home of Gunnison and Crested Butte. As a photographer for the X Games in Aspen, she tested jackets for 12-hour shifts throughout the event. Her tasks included climbing up the superpipe, running between venues, and photographing for many hours regardless of the single digits. She also travels to wintry landscapes, including Canada.

In the most recent testing round, LaHatte and Tilton field-tested two new winter jackets and re-tested two models that had noteworthy updates. They paid extra attention to the temperatures they tested them in while making note of the significant details that outshined — or dampened — the experience.

We score each winter jacket for women on a 1–10 scale for Warmth, Hood and Collar, Weather Protection, and Pockets.

Warmth is straightforward and inspects the fill power, fill weight, and type of insulation: synthetic, down, or hybrid. While considering Weather Protection, we take into account how the jackets shield moisture and wind.

As we consider the Hood and Collar, we look at if the hood is removable, adjustable, insulated, or has a faux fur trim to help block wind and snow. How high does the collar reach and is there a storm flap or closure to help block wind? Also, we look for material against the chin and mouth that’s soft, quick drying, and durable. The pockets in each jacket are rated based on the functionality, placement, variety, and closure style.

The Overall Rating is based on contextual, editorial judgment, and the complex user experience across various scenarios and conditions.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Winter Jackets for Women

Brands make a wide variety of winter jackets for women. This lifestyle collection spotlights insulated outerwear that provides incredible warmth, coverage, and cold-weather protection. These jackets are excellent for everyday use, whether you’re watching a hockey game or taking the daily commute.

What They Are: Insulated Jackets & Parkas

While we’ve included hip-length models, most of our picks are parkas, a longer-length version of an insulated winter jacket. These designs provide the heavyweight, insulation, and protective accents — like insulated hoods, wrist gaiters, and faux fur — needed to keep women from dropping body heat.

You should feel comfortable even if you’re not moving while wearing the coat. These winter jackets work best in cold, frigid, and negative temperatures. They’re built to thrive during snowstorms and, for some of these outer layers, during rainstorms. While some winter jackets have underarm vents or breathable textiles, ventilation and breathability are not key elements.

What They Aren’t: Down Jackets & Ski Jackets

Another function-forward winter jacket not featured in this guide is the women’s down jacket, often called a puffy or puffer. While many of our top winter jackets pack in down plumes, our down jacket collection includes hip-length pieces that support movement, stretch with you, breathe well, and feel lightweight and compressible.

For the most weather protection, you’d layer one of these puppies over your base layer or midlayer and throw a shell on top. While many women pull on these down jackets to run errands, most grab them for activities like alpine skiing, backcountry touring, or snowshoeing. These layers perform well in mild, moderate, or cold weather.

Alternatively, brands design athletic winter jackets for performance and active use. Like women’s ski jackets, they use breathable, packable, lightweight materials. While some designs in that category include insulation, many outer shells skip it.

Women’s Winter Jacket Lengths

Women’s winter jackets come in various lengths ranging from the hips to your ankles. While length could be fashion-oriented, it dramatically influences a jacket’s warmth and protection from the elements and your available range of motion. A longer jacket can help protect the backside when sitting on a cold, frosty, wet bench or bike seat. The back of the jacket hem is often articulated with extra length, like a tail, for additional warmth.

Here are the general lengths of our favorite winter jackets: 

• Short: Hip to upper thigh length (20-30 inches) 
• Mid-length: Lower thigh to below the knee (30-40 inches)
• Long: Mid-calf to above the foot (40-50+ inches)

Short Winter Jackets

Shorter winter jackets that come to your hip area can be harder to find since they often teeter the line between a traditional parka and a more performance-oriented down jacket. The Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket is in this shorter category with a center back length of 28″ that rests just below the glutes. Remember that shorter winter jackets provide more mobility but less coverage for your lower extremities. 

Mid-length Winter Jacket

The most common winter jacket length is 30-40″. These silhouettes reach your mid-thigh, knee, or just below the knee. Mid-length options are great for providing room for stepping up into your vehicle, throwing a leg over a bicycle, or walking around town. This length usually still covers the hips, upper thighs, and hamstrings, providing plenty of warmth and insulation.

Long Winter Jackets for Women

If you live in a very windy, freezing place or want to spend your winter days in what feels like a mobile sleeping bag, invest in a longer winter jacket, which delivers more insulation and protection than mid-length options. These full-coverage jackets can fall to the feet, providing head-to-toe warmth. 
Our picks for longer winter parkas are the Lands’ End Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat (47 3/8 “-49 7/8″) and the Columbia Women’s Pike Lake III Long Jacket (45”). 

Longer winter jackets will most likely limit your leg movement and stride, but many designs come with side zippers or snaps that can be opened to expand the jacket’s circumference, helping you cruise around town or step onto a bus more easily. 

Remember that depending on your height, shape, torso, and leg length, a winter jacket’s overall and center-back length may fit you differently than the published measurements. We recommend trying a few different jacket lengths to gauge your most comfortable length. 

Temperature Rating & Warmth

When choosing the best winter jacket, temperature ratings are a guideline and vary based on individual circulation, physical output, and environmental conditions like wind.

Temperature ratings for winter jackets indicate the lowest ambient temperature at which the coat can keep you warm. Since no universal metric or third-party testing system exists for temperature ratings, brands determine their standards — so ratings vary. Several factors influence the final number, including the type, quality, and quantity of insulation. The fabric density, liner materials, and extraneous factors — like faux fur around the hood — play a role, too.

Some manufacturers rate jacket warmth based on how the jacket performs in specific temperature ranges (degrees Fahrenheit). For example, Lands’ End rates the Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat for -25°F to 10°F, meaning the brand designed it to keep you warm in temperatures as low as -25°F. Above 10°F, you might find the jacket too warm.

Other brands operate on an internal sliding scale of warmness, comparing its products side by side for the warmest option. Take The North Face Women’s Arctic Parka, for example. Under The North Face’s sliding temperature scale, the Arctic Parka is considered warmest on a range of warm, warmer, and warmest.

Factors that influence a jacket’s temperature rating and warmth include:

• Down vs. synthetic insulation
• Fill power
• Fill weight

Down vs. Synthetic Insulation

Our favorite insulated winter jackets use natural down — brands source it from geese, ducks, or recycled materials — and other designs have synthetic insulation that mimics down. Some designs blend the two insulations with targeted zones of synthetic fill. Manufactured fill works well where the jacket experiences the most precipitation or perspiration on the shoulders or underneath the arms. 

Synthetic insulation is made from polyester fibers and designed to imitate down clusters and properties with a few key differences. If you compare two equal-weight jackets, down is warmer than this alternative.

But synthetic insulation retains warmth even when wet. It’s also easier to wash and usually comes at a lower price point.

When to Choose Down vs. Synthetic

Overall, in super-wet snowfall or rain and when weight isn’t an issue, synthetics can be a better, safer choice. Synthetic insulation can also be a more breathable choice in zones where you’d typically sweat, like in the underarms and along the sides. Some climates experience lower water content in its snow, meaning the snowflakes are drier and the overall humidity is lower, so waterproofness isn’t always essential.

Down can be treated with a coating that helps prevent moisture absorption, such as the Nikwax Fluorocarbon-Free Hydrophobic Finish applied to the down fill of the Rab Women’s Deep Cover Down Parka or the water-repellent HyperDry down in the Lands’ End Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat. The exterior construction can be waterproof and protect the fill like the Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket or Arc’teryx Patera Parka.

Thanks to down’s supreme warmth, we pair most of our top winter jackets with down insulation. The Patagonia Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka also uses down fill, and Patagonia sources 100% of that down from recycled, retired products.

Alternatively, Fjallraven equips the Nuuk Parka with synthetic insulation, as does Columbia with the Women’s Heavenly Long Hooded Jacket and the Women’s Pike Lake III Long Jacket.

One natural down alternative is Kapok, which is made from fibers of Kapok tree seeds and combined with recycled materials. This silky-soft insulation is excellent for folks who want a more eco-friendly option. The Marmot Women’s Chelsea Coat utilizes this down alternative and synthetic fibers.

Fill Power

Fill power measures the loft and quality of down. A 1-ounce sample of down is compressed in a cylinder to calculate fill power. Generally speaking, the higher the number, the warmer the jacket — though the fill power isn’t the only variable affecting a jacket’s warmth.

But the higher the fill quality, the less down is needed to create the same warmth. This is because the jacket can trap more air and warmth. Higher fill power is more compressible, loftier, lighter, and pricier.

The fill power ratings range from 300 to 900 and some are even higher. Most of the jackets on this list are in the 600- to 800-fill range. Generally, the quality increases with the fill number:

• 400-500: fair quality
• 600: good quality
• 700: great quality
• 800: excellent quality
• 900 and above: highest quality

Fill Weight

Brands typically label a jacket’s fill power with terms like 600-fill or 800-fill. The fill weight — measured in ounces — shows how much down they’ve packed into the jacket. However, manufacturers rarely disclose the fill weight, even though it significantly affects how warm the jacket feels.
For example, an 800-fill jacket with 150 g of down delivers roughly the same warmth as a 400-fill jacket with 300 g of down. But the 800-fill version compresses more easily.

Comparing Winter Jackets With Different Fill Power

Comparing jackets with different fill powers can be tricky. In general, lower fill powers provide less loft and warmth. And while we often know the quality of the down (fill power), brands rarely share how much down they use in insulated jackets — the fill weight.

If two down jackets weigh the same but have different fill powers (such as two 900g jackets with 650 fill and 800 fill), the one with the higher fill power will feel less bulky and pack down more easily.

When two 700-fill jackets differ in weight, the heavier one usually feels warmer — but remember that other factors, including length, pocket count, hood size, and zippers, affect the jacket’s overall weight.

Other factors also influence warmth, such as jacket length and baffle design — including the shape, size, and placement—and how the manufacturer distributes down fill throughout the jacket. For instance, Lands’ End designed the lightweight and impressively packable 800-fill Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat to perform well in temperatures ranging from 3 to 29 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although it doesn’t pack down as small, the 600-fill Lands’ End Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat delivers more warmth overall — keeping you protected in temperatures between -25 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Several factors contribute to this: The Maxi Winter Coat is longer, uses a polyester shell, and has large horizontal baffles. In contrast, the Wanderweight uses nylon and narrow chevron baffles.

Water Repellency: Choosing Winter Jackets for Different Snow Climates

There are four general snow climates: coastal, transitional, intermountain, and continental. Generally, the closer you are to the coast, the more precipitation you’ll experience, and the water content will be higher in the snow, which will be wetter and heavier. In contrast, the snow in continental climates is drier and lighter and accumulates less than the coast. That includes most of the Rocky Mountains, such as in Colorado. Intermountain regions show characteristics of both. Transitional areas are similar to the coast but with less rain and snow.

Four snow climates exist across wintry locations, according to the Utah Avalanche Center:

• Coastal (wettest): California, Washington, Oregon, coastal Alaska, coastal British Columbia
• Transitional (moderately wet): Areas and targeted locations in Montana, northern Idaho, Oregon
• Intermountain (mildly wet): Utah’s Wasatch Range, most of Idaho, Montana, and portions of Northeast Oregon and Southwest Colorado
• Continental (mostly dry): Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, interior Alaska, interior British Columbia

For wetter environments, the Patagonia Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka includes a removable exterior waterproof shell, and the Arc’teryx Patera Parka is likewise waterproof. You can wear waterproof winter jackets in drier climates, too. But they generally cost more.

Other factors that can help make a jacket waterproof or water-resistant are the fill or face fabric treatments, which can be eco-friendly formulas or toxic chemicals to humans and the environment. Jackets can also have sealed seams to block moisture.

Hydrophobic Down

Down doesn’t perform well when it gets wet — and that’s where synthetic jackets often have the upper hand. Over the past decade, more brands have started using hydrophobic down. For example, Rab coats the recycled down in the Women’s Deep Cover Down Parka with Nikwax Fluorocarbon-Free Hydrophobic Finish to improve moisture resistance.

Essentially, manufacturers coat the down feathers in a water-resistant polymer. While this doesn’t offer the same level of water resistance as synthetic insulation, hydrophobic down works well in light precipitation. Brands also use waterproof face fabrics or treat them with a DWR finish to help block moisture.

Waterproofness

A full-on waterproof jacket is ideal in wet snow, rain, or drizzly weather. The top-tier waterproof standard is GORE-TEX, a membrane integrated into various 2-layer and 3-layer designs. The material is waterproof, windproof, and breathable. Many brands likewise have a proprietary version of waterproof fabrics.

Waterproofness is measured by the amount of water placed atop a fabric before leaks. The rate of waterproof jackets varies from 5,000 to 20,000 mm or greater. The latter end of the spectrum generally leads to a less breathable fabric. The more waterproof and breathable a jacket is, the more technical it is to manufacture and the pricier it will be.

• 0-5,000 mm: Resistant to light rain, dry snow
• 6,000-10,000 mm: Waterproof for light rain and dry, non-heavy snow
• 11,000-15,000 mm: Waterproof for moderate rain and dry, non-heavy snow
• 16,000-20,000 mm: Waterproof for heavy rain and wet snow
• 20,000 mm and greater: Waterproof for heavy rain and dense, heavy snow

Many down and synthetic winter jackets are not waterproof but offer a degree of water resistance, which works fine in dryer winter climates and where the snow water equivalent (the amount of liquid water in the snow) is lower.

DWR (Durable Water Repellent) Treatments

Many women’s winter jackets feature an exterior face fabric that brands treat with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) to boost water repellency and, in some cases, stain resistance. This treatment causes rain and water to bead up and roll off the surface. Over time, however, the application wears off, and you’ll need to reapply it to maintain performance.

Traditional DWR treatments rely on PFCs (perfluorinated compounds), toxic chemicals that harm the environment and human health and don’t break down naturally. These compounds bond synthetic chemicals and fluorine atoms to carbon chains, making them highly resistant to degradation.

Eliminating Chemicals: PFC-Free DWR

Although PFCs repel moisture effectively, their environmental impact has led to strict regulations and bans in some countries. These compounds don’t decompose in water or nature, are toxic to animals, and release substantial emissions. The EPA began working to phase out PFCs in 2006 because of its clear environmental and health consequences. Traditional PFC-based DWRs fall into two categories: long-chain and short-chain. Some brands choose short-chain PFCs because they pose less environmental risk, even though they don’t last as long.

Fortunately, more companies in the outdoor industry are transitioning to PFC-free DWR alternatives. For example, Rab uses Pertex Quantum, a fluorocarbon-free DWR, on the Women’s Deep Cover Down Parka. Patagonia also eliminates PFCs from the Women’s Tres 3-in-1 Parka fabrics, including the membrane and surface coatings. Stio uses a PFCEC-free DWR on the Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket, meaning the treatment avoids all PFCs of Environmental Concern (PFCEC).

Our top jacket picks rely on fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic down treatments to fend off moisture. For example, Lands’ End uses HyperDry in the Wanderweight Ultralight Packable Down Coat and the Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat. Rab treats the down in the Deep Cover Down Parka with a Nikwax Fluorocarbon-Free Hydrophobic Finish.

Windproofness

Choosing a winter jacket that blocks bone-chilling breezes is essential if you live in a gusty climate. Many brands design jackets to be windproof, meaning the fabric and construction prevent cold air from penetrating the layers.

Manufacturers measure a jacket’s windproofness by its wind resistance or windproof rating, usually expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM). A high CFM rating means the fabric lets more air through and is less windproof. For instance, fabrics with a 60 CFM rating offer little to no wind protection, while those with a 0 CFM rating completely block the wind.

Although many brands don’t share the exact CFM rating, they often label a jacket as windproof if it meets that performance standard. Among our top picks, The North Face Women’s Arctic Parka, Arc’teryx Patera Parka, and Stio Women’s Colter WINDSTOPPER Down Jacket all shield you from the harshest gusts. Design Changes & Holdovers

The redesigned Fuego Down Hooded Jacket now has a looser fit to make it easier to layer underneath and provide a greater range of motion. It helps with the casual styling during everyday wear, too. The hooded jacket also has a slightly longer fit, which, along with the adjustable hem, elastic cuffs, and scuba-fit hood, should help keep out winter drafts while on the move.

What hasn’t changed is the jacket’s traceable down. Each Fuego jacket comes with a QR code on its hanger tag. A quick scan of that code will reveal the source of its down insulation.

Another holdover is the layout of pockets, with two zippered hand pockets on the outside and two interior dump pockets for items like gloves or beanies — where they’re less likely to fall out. The entire jacket packs down into an interior zipper when it’s time to stash the jacket while backpacking or traveling.

Because every body and purpose is different, no single sports bra that will work for everyone. However, below, we present all the information you need to purchase a sports bra that suits your needs.

How to Choose a Sports Bra

Similar to owning a variety of socks for a range of conditions, footwear, and sports, you might find yourself needing a few different styles of sports bras. Next-to-skin layers are available in a range of materials, which excel in different climates and can provide different fits. The straps and entrances of sports bras can be more accessible to certain body shapes and mobility. Other sports bras offer additional functionality like pockets or removable cups.

Of course, the importance of choosing the correct size for a sports bra cannot be overlooked. Every single brand offers a specific size chart, which we try to break down in each product review for ease.

Read on to learn more about the variables that create unique sports bras for a range of activities and physiques.

Level of Support

Most brands categorize sports bras by levels of support, helping differentiate which bras are best for certain activities. Essentially, the more bouncing involved (think running or horseback riding), the higher support you might want. Features like cups, compression, structure (underwire), and wide bands underneath the breasts allow the bra to be categorized as high support. Of course, this also depends on your own cup size and preference. Smaller-chested folks can often get away with running in a low-support bra.

• Low support: Minimal or no padding, compression, and structure. Ideal for low-impact activities such as yoga, hiking, or everyday wear.
• Medium support: Moderate padding, compressive bands, and structure. Ideal for activities like jogging, mountain biking, or gym training.
• High support: The most structure with features like thicker straps, integrated cups, compressive fabrics, and adjustability. Ideal for activities like HIIT workouts, dancing, horseback riding, or sprinting.

Fabric of Sports Bras

Sports bras are made of many different fabrics. Most synthetic bras utilize polyester or nylon as the primary fabric for softness, moisture-wicking, and breathability. Almost every bra integrates a small percentage of elastane or spandex to deliver stretch and mobility.

Brands like Icebreaker and Branwyn are among the few options for sports bras built with merino wool (used in tandem with nylon and elastane for stretch), known for moisture-wicking and antimicrobial properties. Merino is a great low-maintenance material for summer activities, as well as being the top choice for winter base layers for temperature regulation. Your ski jacket will keep you warm from the outside, but merino will keep you warm from the inside.

Breathability & Quick-Drying Material

Breathability is influenced by both fabric and design, allowing for airflow to keep you cool during workouts. The weave of the fabric is important; the looser the weave, the more easily moisture can escape. Typically, breathable panels are integrated into the bra, since breathability can also come at the cost of durability if used across the entire piece. For example, some bras have a small amount of perforation in just the front and back, rather than compromising the strength throughout the entire bra.

Sweat is inevitable if you’re having any fun at all, so fabrics like polyester and nylon wick moisture away from your body (thanks to hydrophobic properties), working to keep you dry throughout the activity. Merino wool feels more absorbent than nylon and polyester; however, it can absorb up to 30% of its weight without feeling wet, so there’s a chance you actually won’t even notice the sweat.

Rib Band

The rib band (which runs around the bottom of the bra) is a structural component, designed to provide support and stability. Generally, the thicker the rib band the more support you’ll find; the rib band width in this test ranged from 0.5 inch to 3 inches.

Some rib bands are integrated into the rest of the bra, as the entire bra is quite supportive overall. There’s still a rib band tucked underneath the cups, but it’s sewn into the rest of the bra, instead of a uniform band that runs consistently around the front and back.

Many low-support bras have a wider, 3-inch rib band to provide extra support to make up for the light duty.

Because it’s typically thicker than the straps and upper fabric, the rib band can also be the spot that absorbs the most sweat and is the slowest to dry. Some rib bands are made from the same material as the body of the bra, so they wick moisture and dry pretty quickly (although they provide minimal support).

Underwire in Sports Bras

You’ll see underwire in some sports bras where extra support and shape are required. It’s usually made with either metal or rubber, the former sacrificing some mobility and comfort in the name of support.

Rubber underwire is a little more flexible, which might serve more active ladies better. That being said, underwire is not only for the larger-chested ladies. Some folks with smaller boobs prefer to wear a bra with underwire since it adds a little more shape and definition. That part is entirely personal preference.

Underwire isn’t as commonplace in sports bras as it is in everyday bras, although some have a rubber underwire that you can still move in.

Breast Cups & Pads

Cups can provide support and shape, while the pads are removable in many bras for a customizable fit and personal preference. Some brands use the terms ‘cups’ and ‘pads’ interchangeably, which can be confusing.

Some bras feature removable pads, while others feature an integrated cup that fits more like a traditional bra.

Removable cups in bras can be taken out to decrease volume. A few low-support bras don’t have cups at all.

Sports Bras Coverage

Coverage, in general, refers to how much fabric covers the breast area of a sports bra, and it often (but not always) aligns with support.

Higher-impact activities like running or horseback riding generally require more coverage than lower-impact activities like hiking and yoga. High-neck bras often feature more support, while v-neck and scoop-neck bras typically have a little less coverage and are less supportive overall. But that also depends on cup size.

For instance, someone with smaller breasts may be able to get away with a low-coverage bra for a long road run, while someone with a larger chest may prefer a higher-coverage option.

Often, coverage directly relates to how much support you want, but in some cases, modesty plays a role too; some folks might feel more comfortable in a high-neck bra versus a low-cut v-neck, so there’s plenty of personal preference.

Sports Bras Straps

Straps differ for many reasons, including style, support, and ease of pulling the sports bra on and off. A lot can depend on the type of top you’re going to wear, too.

Racerbacks aren’t adjustable, but can provide a supportive and secure fit that disappears under racerback tank tops. Straight straps fit more like a traditional everyday bra, and are easier to get on and off, but might take a little more adjusting when you initially try it on to get the fit right since they typically feature more customization.

Some bras have a combo for ultimate customization since they utilize adjustable racerback straps. They adjust with hook-and-loop straps on both the shoulders and around the rib band, which is why it’s been a favorite for so many ladies looking for a more precise fit.

Thin, criss-cross straps are mostly aesthetic and provide a little style if you plan on wearing them on its own during a pilates class. More skinny straps can be a small sacrifice in support since the thick straps tend to hold bras in place a little better, but the difference is pretty minimal, and many testers felt the cute design was worth it.

Closure: Back or Front

Closure is often (but not always) related to the level of support a bra has. High-support bras sometimes offer three levels of clasps for easy on-and-off and support. Bras for higher-impact activities often have a front zipper for extra security and adjustability.

Most of the rest of the low- and medium-impact sports bras pull overhead in a simpler design thanks to stretchy synthetic fabrics that let you wiggle through.

Sports Bras With Pockets

Some sports bras integrate pockets as a creative way to store essentials without having to carry a bag. We’ve seen this trend increase overall in the past few years. Small zippered side pockets and center back pockets just under the neck have emerged, with mixed results.

Ultimately, it can be useful for runners heading out for a quick jog without wanting to carry anything else. It definitely requires the proper fit; otherwise, it can pull the bra in weird directions or dig in if you try to stash your keys or something hard-sided. High-coverage and high-support bras can handle pockets better in general since they tend to have more structure.

Sizing

Sports bra sizing varies by brand. Typically, bralettes and low-impact bras utilize XS-XL size labels, opting for sizing closer to a T-shirt since the cups are a minimal component and the bras mostly rely on consistent stretchy fabric. Other companies, like Brooks, let you select your band size as well as your cup size, while Lululemon uses numerical sizing (2-14) similar to its tights.

SheFit has a “Find My Fit” tool on its site that lets you input your height, weight, and age to help you calculate the right fit. Most brands have some sort of size guide available on the product page, which can help you translate your sizing into the company’s language.

Chafing

Chafing. In a perfect world, we’d avoid it altogether. But even the most seasoned athletes end up experiencing it at some point. Chafing is often caused by excessive rubbing, which can be exacerbated by heat. Once you’ve rubbed your skin raw, it’s hard to go back without just waiting for it to heal. We’re all about getting ahead of the problem.

A chafe injury isn’t necessarily caused by a specific type of textile, but some of our sweatier testers have noticed more chafing with certain synthetic blends versus a synthetic-wool hybrid fabric. Every person’s epidermis, size, shape, climate, and amount of perspiration differs — even day to day or activity to activity.

Anti-chafe products like Body Glide, applied before the activity, can help prevent chafing. Baby powder is another effective option that runners turn to, applied in areas like the rib band or shoulder straps, which are the most common culprits.

Check your fit, too. A bra that’s too big or too small can cause excess rubbing, so that’s another important component to think about.

Tags

In general, most ladies prefer to remove the tags from their sports bras to prevent chafing. A long, scratchy tag (like the one lululemon has attached) can be a quick way to turn a perfectly good sports bra into a scratchy, chafy, jog.

Most sewn-in tags, like the Brooks tags, are easy to remove once you’re ready to wear the bra, but they can also contain useful information about washing instructions.

Almost all of these sports bras had a tag we pulled off inside (typically attached to the seam between the back and front on one side), as well as a hang tag.

How to Care for Sports Bras

Sports bra lifespan

For bras that see regular workouts, sweat, and outdoor use, the estimated lifespan is about one year. With consistent, gentle care, you can extend that to one to three years, which is what many testers report.

Washing sports bras

Wash sports bras in cold water with a mild detergent to protect technical fabrics and preserve stretch. Skip fabric softeners and bleach, as both can degrade fibers and interfere with moisture-wicking performance.

For wool-blend bras, you’ll get the best results with a specialty wool wash, which cleans without stripping natural fibers.

Drying sports bras

Avoid the dryer. High heat can warp cups, break down elastic, and shorten a bra’s life. Most sports bras are made from quick-drying materials, so hang-drying or laying flat is always the safest option.

Sports bra cup care

If your bra has molded or padded cups, occasional machine washing is fine, but hand washing helps them maintain their shape over time.

Post-workout bra handling

Take your bra off right after exercising. Leaving it balled up in a gym bag traps sweat, bacteria, and body products that can damage materials. At a minimum, air it out before packing it. Even better: give it a quick rinse to remove salt and oils that speed up fabric breakdown.

One of the most well-rounded sports bras I’ve ever tried, I’d take the Lululemon Energy Bra with me to the far reaches of the earth.

Curling has become a darling sport of the Winter Olympics, and for 2026, Team USA will sport fresh new duds. For February’s games in Milano Cortina, USA Curling will sport stars and stripes–themed apparel from Columbia Sportswear.

Today, the brand released images of the full kit. And for the first time, fans can purchase replica versions to show their support.

USA Winter Olympic Uniforms by Columbia

Milano Cortina will mark the second time Columbia has outfitted USA Curling for the Olympics. The sportswear brand is returning after its participation with the team for the 2022 Games in Beijing. It also previously kitted out the U.S. Olympic ski team in 2018.

“Outfitting the United States Curling Team for the Olympic stage is an incredible honor and our teams have worked closely with USA Curling over the past several years to help propel them to the podium in Italy,” Columbia President Joe Boyle said in a press release.

“The uniforms are a testament to our commitment to these ambassadors — and we’re proud to support these athletes as they compete at the highest level.”

Patriotic Gear

In honor of the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary, each competition jersey includes at least 250 stars, and in true patriotic fashion, they include a red, white, and blue color scheme.

In addition to the uniforms, Columbia will also outfit the team with village wear designed to keep them warm while in snowy Italy.

The down puffer ($300) is made with the brand’s signature Omni-Heat Infinity system. This liner, which now includes a star pattern, is “built to retain body heat while remaining breathable using an expanded thermal-reflective pattern,” according to Columbia. It’s the same tech the outerwear brand shared with NASA to help insulate a lunar lander.

The zip-up fleece ($100) has a bold, distinct stars and stripes pattern that definitely says “Go USA!” Cotton T-shirts, baseball caps, and plush fleece beanies round out the lineup. Fans can grab this apparel for themselves on Columbia’s site and at select Dick’s Sporting Goods stores.

The Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody ($329) is a classic, all-purpose down jacket that delivers reliable warmth, wind resistance, and clean style. With 800-fill down and a durable NetPlus shell made from recycled fishing nets, it’s built for both performance and sustainability.

The latest version is noticeably warmer, now packed with 5.3 ounces of down. We wore it on hikes, bike rides, and winter walks in Colorado’s Elk and Sangre de Cristo mountains with a light baselayer in temps down to 5 degrees. One tester even used it as his only insulator during a full Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike, and it held up through weeks of drizzle, snowy whiteouts, and heavy use.

It’s slightly warmer than the Arc’teryx Cerium Hoody, Rab Microlight Alpine, and Fjallraven Pack Down, and it layers better, too. The fit is more tailored than previous versions. Our tester, who usually wears a large size, found it true to size, allowing for full movement and mobility through scrambles and climbs. It felt more comfortable and relaxed than the Arc’teryx Cerium Hoody, but still streamlined enough for backcountry skiing, hiking, resort days, or even city wear over a dress shirt. The hood is snug and wind-blocking, though a bit tight over a helmet.

For everything from mountain adventures to city commutes, the Down Sweater Hoody remains one of the most versatile, dependable, and stylish down jackets out there.

This is an excellent everyday down jacket with great style and protection for all four seasons. The REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket 2.0 ($129) is a reliable, all-around performer that impressed us with its solid warmth, durability, and unbeatable value. It’s not flashy, but it delivers where it counts. It’s one of the more versatile jackets we tried, so it works well for many situations, including hiking, backpacking, and camping. It’s stylish enough for wearing around town, yet not too simple to be ineffective.

We took it camping, and while making coffee outside our tent on a summer morning, it kept us warm enough despite temperatures hovering in the high 30s.

With 650-fill down, it has the lowest fill power in our lineup, so it doesn’t insulate as efficiently as premium options like the Arc’teryx Cerium or Rab Mythic Alpine. It’s not ideal for deep winter or extended cold-weather trips, but for shoulder-season hikes, casual wear, and backpacking on a budget, it gets the job done.

At 11 ounces, it isn’t the most packable jacket out there, and it lacks technical features like a hood or waist cinch, which limits its ability to trap heat. However, the recycled nylon shell with DWR has proven impressively durable through heavy use.

Made to fit comfortably, the REI 650 runs slightly large. Our tester, 5’10” and 170 pounds, usually wears a large but preferred the medium here. The smaller size offered a better silhouette without sacrificing room for layering. With up to 10 men’s sizes and eight for women, dialing in your perfect fit is easy.

The Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown Hoody Down Jacket ($320) is one of the most flexible and comfortable down jackets we’ve tested. From backcountry ski tours and high alpine climbs to bike commutes and daily errands, it moved with us through it all, even temps below freezing (thanks, wind chill!) at 10,000 feet.

One aim of the Stretchdown line was to blend the warm insulation of down with the range of motion and versatility of a softshell. When we lean over the handlebars, make a big climbing move, or shovel snow, it’s easy to move in without restriction. The Stretchdown is the first-ever jacket with stitch-free baffle construction and is made from a single fabric, eliminating the need for glue.

With 700-fill RDS-certified down, it’s slightly less warm than the Patagonia Down Sweater but more breathable and comfortable during active use. After a year of testing, from summer camping to snowy Tetons ski days, it remains a go-to.

No matter the conditions, it performs better than a standard down jacket. On the super-windy summit of Static Peak, we were unfazed. A surprise spring rainstorm while out on a chilly bike ride didn’t come close to stopping us.

The Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown Hoody stands out for its rugged durability and weather resistance — water beads off the surface, and the jacket shrugs off snow, wind, and abrasion thanks to its tough 20D stretch nylon shell. Unlike many down jackets, it’s built to take a beating, whether you’re carrying skis, bushwhacking, or scrambling on rock.

It also packs in thoughtful features: a roomy stretch hood, three fleece-lined zip pockets, an inner drop pocket, elastic cuffs, and an adjustable hem. While it doesn’t pack down as small as ultralight options like the Ghost Whisperer, the tradeoff in durability and comfort is well worth it for high-output, all-season use. The fit is trim and low-profile, making it easy to layer under a shell or wear as a standalone.

Super plush and reliably warm, Patagonia’s Fitz Roy Down Hoody ($399) is a midweight alpine staple built for cold transitions, long belays, and frigid summit days. We’ve worn versions of this jacket since its debut in 2009, and the longevity alone speaks volumes, with one model surviving more than a decade of hard use on Colorado fourteeners, frigid ice climbs in Ouray, and windswept Cascades mountaineering adventures.

With 800-fill-power down, a soft yet durable recycled ripstop shell, and a PFAS-free DWR, the Fitz Roy offers impressive warmth in a surprisingly packable package. The fit is on the roomier side, which makes layering simple and adds to its all-day comfort in freezing conditions. It includes a helmet-compatible hood with a high collar, harness-friendly chest pockets, zippered hand pockets, and a roomy internal drop pocket for skins or gloves. We do wish it had two internal pockets instead of one. It isn’t as warm or storm-ready as the OR Super Alpine Down Parka, but it’s far more practical to carry and use, making it the better choice for most alpine missions where weight and mobility matter just as much as warmth.

Though lightweight, it’s a bit bulky and too warm for high-output movement, making it best for transitions, belays, and downhill laps in low temps. The main drawback is its performance in wet snow; the down isn’t hydrophobic, and prolonged moisture eventually impacts loft.

The warmth-to-weight ratio is excellent, and it packs down smaller than any other jacket we’ve tested, other than the Black Diamond Deploy. On a snowy early-spring bike ride and hiking adventure through Grand Teton National Park, we discovered firsthand how surprisingly wind- and water-resistant the shell can be for such a thin fabric. The hem is adjustable and the cut is slim, making it ideal for light layering on the move.

If every ounce counts, you can shave even more weight with the ultra-ultralight Ghost Whisperer UL ($420), which drops another 2.1 ounces. But even in its standard form, the Ghost Whisperer is still best for mild conditions or as a midlayer; it’s noticeably less warm than heavier puffies like the Patagonia Down Sweater or Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown. We also wish Mountain Hardwear had added a chest pocket for snacks or a phone, and while the shell holds up better than it looks, it still feels delicate compared to burlier options.

At the Appalachian Trail Days festival in Damascus, Virginia, we were struck by how many hikers were wearing the Arc’teryx Cerium Down Hoody ($400). When thru-hikers choose a jacket as their go-to insulator for a 5-month trek, it’s clear the jacket delivers.

Weighing just 12 ounces in a men’s medium, the Cerium offers a strong balance of warmth and packability. It’s not as light as classic ultralight synthetic jackets favored by die-hard trekkers, but its excellent loft, warmth, and sleek design quickly put it on our radar. It kept us warm on cold-weather backpacking trips, ice climbs, and alpine missions, and even held up during sunset photo shoots in freezing temps.

Arc’teryx uses ‘Down Composite Mapping’, placing 850-fill down in the core and synthetic Coreloft in areas prone to moisture, such as the shoulders, cuffs, and collar. This hybrid design helps the jacket stay warm even when conditions turn damp.

Compared to more casual options like the REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket, the Cerium has a much more athletic, performance-focused fit. Our tester, who is 5’11” and 185 pounds, used to fall between a medium and a large in Arc’teryx jackets. With the newly revised fit, the large now wears like a premium, slim-cut piece. It layers well over a base layer or under a shell and looks sharp enough for town or campus wear. The only real drawback is the stuff sack, which is separate rather than integrated into a pocket.

In short, the Arc’teryx Cerium Down Hoodie is one of the best down jackets you can buy for lightweight epics across the country or weekend outings to your favorite alpine lake. Boasting a stellar warmth-to-weight ratio, durable fabric, and a stylish fit, you really can’t go wrong with it.

In every scenario, it proved to be the only layer we wanted for truly brutal days.

Warmth is its defining trait. The Super Alpine excels during low-output activities, such as glassing ridgelines for wildlife, shooting images in subzero wind, or taking breaks on steep winter climbs where staying warm matters more than mobility. The lofty down and extended length insulate your core and upper legs into the single digits below zero. It is far too warm and bulky for sustained uphill travel, but it becomes the ideal layer for rest stops or whenever you stop moving and need instant, reliable heat.

Durability and wind protection further distinguish it. The 30-denier shell is one of the burliest fabrics used on a down jacket and performs extremely well on exposed ridges and windy valleys. When the Black Diamond Deploy Down 0.5 Pullover Hoody ($499) was announced as the lightest down jacket in the world, we were skeptical. At just 5.2 ounces, half the weight of our longstanding ultralight pick, the Ghost Whisperer, how warm could it really be?

Turns out, impressively warm. Packed with 1,000-fill down, it kept us comfortable on adventures where the weather changes multiple times in a few hours, including windy fall hikes in the Tetons and spring ascents in Colorado. It’s not built for long belays or deep winter cold like the Patagonia Fitz Roy, but it excels during high-output missions and shoulder-season alpine days.

The slim, half-zip pullover design works seamlessly with a pack or harness and fits true to size and layers cleanly under a shell but still allows enough room for a light layer underneath.

That said, it’s extremely minimalist. All ultralight gear has some tradeoffs, and this jacket is no exception. The outer fabric is extremely delicate; it’s only 4-denier compared to the rest of our jackets, which are 10-denier and up, so we were nervous about snagging it on a branch or brushing up against rocks.

We haven’t had any unusual signs of wear and tear yet, so we will keep an eye on this during continued testing. It also lacks pockets or hood adjustments. And $395 is a steep price for such a stripped-down piece.

The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer offers a more durable alternative. It’s $35 less expensive but twice as heavy, and it includes features like pockets and a drawcord hem to help block out the cold.

All gripes aside, the Deploy Down Hoody is an ideal addition to any mountain athlete’s jacket quiver. It shines during summer alpine ascents, shoulder-season climbs, and long, challenging routes where memories are made and speed is of the essence.

Five well-placed pockets, including two large internal drop-ins, plus a helmet-compatible hood and water-resistant zippers, make this a great technical piece that still feels right at home in town.

The “slim fit” makes layering challenging, decreasing the jacket’s overall versatility. And although the outer material holds up well to the elements, it’s less durable than some of our favorites. Its athletic cut has made it ideal for early winter getaways, allowing this tester to toss a big wool flannel on over it when things get especially frosty. But it was still great by itself when things didn’t dip below a little chilly.

The quality and feel are everything you’d expect from a brand like OR — and then some. The brand dubs it the “most durable, lightweight, and technical down hoodie” in its arsenal. That durability comes from a strategic hybrid construction.

The hood and shoulders use Pertex Quantum Shield 30-denier ripstop that fights abrasion and adds a waterproof barrier where you need it — head and shoulders, exactly where rain hits.

But the toughness doesn’t stop there. Pertex’s Diamond Fuse ripstop shell covers the Helium Down Hoodie’s 800-fill down, affording the jacket enhanced durability without any significant weight penalty.

By no means the warmest puffy we tested, this one wound up in the backseat, at the ready for just-in-case adventures. If you need a puffy to grab that can handle a range of elements, the Helium Down Hoodie fits the bill.

We all want to look great while crushing it, right? Well, that’s exactly what the versatile Stio Pinion Down Hooded Jacket ($299) delivers. Ideal for everyday and active use, we tested the Pinion Down in its rugged birthplace of the Teton backcountry.

To date, we are as impressed with its performance in the high alpine as we are with how it works in our driveway. With its soft handfeel, small baffles, fun colors, and flattering fit, the Pinion transitions seamlessly from trail to town. It has all the essentials: an adjustable hood, zippered hand and interior pockets, and it packs into itself. We wore it on a spring ski tour up Taylor Mountain, while shoveling snow during a January storm in Jackson, and even on a windy, sleet-filled Nordic tour. The recycled 20D Pertex Quantum shell blocked wind well, but it did soak up some moisture — something we’ll monitor with more use.

The fit strikes a sweet spot between casual and athletic: roomy where you want it, trim where you don’t. It’s great for sub-zero sunrise uphill ski tours at Snowking Mountain and stylish enough to head straight to the coffee shop or a work meeting. But, it’s not warm enough for long breaks or summit hangs, and it weighs a few ounces more than some competitors. If you want something warmer and lighter, consider the Black Diamond Approach Hoody.

We also noticed some small abrasions early on, which raises durability concerns. The fabric is billed as ripstop, but after only a few uses, it’s showing more wear than our year-old Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown Hoody, which still looks brand new. Time will tell if the Pinion holds up, but for now, it’s a solid pick for active use with serious style points.

The Outdoor Research Transcendent Down Hoodie ($279) has long been a fan favorite, and after finally testing it, we can see why. Right out of the box, we noticed the airy feel and silky-soft fabric, inside and out. It’s one of the most comfortable puffies we’ve worn, with cozy hand pockets and a relaxed fit that feels great over everything from a T-shirt to layers.

Our tester, who usually wears a men’s large, found the fit true to size but noticeably roomier than more technical jackets like the Cerium or Stretchdown. We wore the Transcendent backpacking in the Winds, skiing in the Tetons, and running errands in town, and it felt at home in all of them.

The latest version is now filled with 800-fill responsibly sourced down, giving it a boost in warmth, comfortable down to around 40°F, but still not as warm or technical as jackets like the Patagonia Down Sweater or Rab Neutrino Pro.

Thoughtful features include a stash pocket, an internal zip pocket, and an insulated hood. It also packs into its own pocket, compressing down smaller than a Nalgene. That said, it’s not great in wet weather. During ski tours and misty hikes, it absorbed moisture more quickly than expected, especially compared to OR’s own Helium Down Hoodie. And while the fit is relaxed, mobility felt restricted during climbs and pole use.

If you need a rugged, technical layer, there are better options. But for casual outings and everyday warmth, the Transcendent is an excellent value.

Of all the down jackets we tested, the Cotopaxi Fuego ($295) received the most “ooh, that’s a nice jacket” comments. Not really surprising, as Cotopaxi has built its reputation on flashy, devil-may-care designs, coupled with ethical and sustainable manufacturing processes.

The Fuego carries on that identity, albeit with a more toned-down, intentionally retro aesthetic. As a puffy, it’s a great around-town choice with some ready-to-party chops. The 800-fill down makes it acceptably lightweight and packable, though if you take it out enough, you’re bound to scuff up those pretty stripes.

The 20-denier shell construction adds a little extra defense against feather loss and daily abuse. Two internal stash pockets and hand pockets round out the build.

Feathered Friends has been perfecting down insulation since its 1972 beginnings, maintaining a utilitarian appeal that prioritizes function over fashion. That said, the Eos looks and feels darn good, and is no slouch around town.

A slim, contoured fit gently hugs your body without being constricting or limiting its layering ability, and two long stitchless baffles run down the sides, giving it a slight, unique flair. These vertical baffles aren’t just for looks, though, and make the jacket more mobile and form-fitting.

They also limit fabric bunching, and we feel noticeably unrestricted while contorting our bodies on hikes or rock climbs. Though there is an inner liner that helps prevent cold spots from the horizontal baffles’ sewn-through stitching, the stitching on the vertical baffles is exposed inside, affording a slight amount of ventilation where it counts.

The Eos packs down small, but the chest pocket doesn’t double as its stuff sack. We’ve already almost lost the separate one it comes with multiple times. The two zippered handwarmer pockets are spacious enough for trinkets or bulky gloves, though internal drop-in pockets would have been a nice addition.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Down Jacket

Understanding Down Warmth: Fill Power vs. Fill Weight

Unlike sleeping bags, down jackets don’t come with standardized temperature ratings, which makes comparing warmth tricky. Most people are familiar with fill power, a measure of down quality and loft, but fill weight is just as important when it comes to real-world warmth.

There are certainly other factors that contribute to a down jacket’s warmth, like baffle shape, design, construction, jacket materials, size, fit, and other features like hood, hem, or cuff closures. All things being equal, however, the down fill power and fill weight will have the most direct impact on a jacket’s warmth.

Fill Power

Fill power measures the loft of down in cubic inches per ounce. Higher fill power means fluffier, lighter, and more compressible insulation:

• 400–500: Fair
• 600: Good
• 700: Great
• 800: Excellent
• 900+: Premium

Higher fill power traps more air per ounce, offering better warmth for less weight. But, fill power is only part of the equation.

Fill Weight

Fill weight is the total amount of down inside the jacket, measured in ounces or grams. To get a reasonable estimate of a jacket’s overall warmth, you can multiply the down’s fill power (expressed in cubic inches per ounce) by the jacket’s fill weight (expressed in ounces), which will yield a number that represents the three-dimensional volume of the jacket’s insulation, or loft, in cubic inches.

On paper, we can, therefore, estimate that the Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody (5.3 ounces of 800-fill-power down) will be warmer than the Feathered Friends Eos (4.0 ounces of 900-fill-power down). Even though the Eos has a higher fill power of 900, the Down Sweater has a higher fill weight of 5.3 ounces.

Warmth-to-Weight

The Eos is lighter (10.8 versus 15.0 ounces), so it offers a better warmth-to-weight ratio. But if you’re prioritizing warmth alone, especially for long belays or cold alpine starts, heavier jackets like the Rab Neutrino Pro (7.5 ounces of 800-fill down) are the way to go.

Lighter jackets like the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer (3 ounces of 800-fill, total weight 8.8 ounces) are great for fast-and-light missions but fall short in prolonged cold or when you’re standing still.

Fill weight isn’t always advertised as readily as fill power. But, fill weight is — in our opinion — a much more crucial stat to consider when gearing up for any adventure. While other factors, such as face fabric, sewn-through seams versus box baffles, and other features, play a role in how warm a jacket is, a higher fill weight will almost always indicate a toastier puffy. Note: We would like to include fill weight in our specifications for each product, but have found it challenging to find for most products, even when asking brands.

Bottom line: Fill power tells you how efficient the down is. Fill weight tells you how much insulation you’re actually getting. Together, they’re your best indicators of how warm a jacket will be.

Durability

The shell fabric is an important factor for both durability and packability. Ultralight jackets tend to be made with a lighter, thinner shell material. Denier is the measurement used here. A lower denier rating means the outer fabric is lighter and, therefore, more prone to tears.

For backcountry excursions, the lower weight can be a worthy tradeoff. But for daily use, we recommend a higher denier like we see in the Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown Hoody. Most of the jackets we tested have a 10-denier or 20-denier shell fabric, with some 30-denier models. And if you do get a tear or campfire burn hole, there’s always the reliable duct tape, Tenacious Tape, or Noso Puffy Patch repair options.

Water Resistance & Hydrophobic Down

Down does not perform well when wet. And this is one of the places synthetic jackets tend to win out. In the past decade, there has been a growing use of hydrophobic down. Essentially, the down feathers are coated in a water-resistant polymer. It still doesn’t match the water resistance of synthetics, but for light precipitation, hydrophobic down can’t be beaten.

Manufacturers treat the face fabrics of some jackets, like the Patagonia Fitz Roy Hoody and the Patagonia Down Sweater Hoodie with DWR, to help block light moisture, too. Our pick for the most weather-resistant down jacket, The North Face Summit Series Breithorn Hoodie, has both water-resistant down and an outer made of recycled nylon that has both a DWR coating and Pertex Y Fuse, which increases the down-proof and water-beading properties of the fabric.

Fit: Finding the Right Jacket for the Job

The way a down jacket fits should match how you plan to use it. Some are trim and athletic for layering and mobility, while others are boxier or longer for casual use and added coverage.

Technical Pursuits

For more casual use or mixed urban-to-trail wear, the Outdoor Research Transcendent Hoody and Stio Pinion Down Hoody offer relaxed fits with solid warmth and style. Both look good enough to wear around town but are built to handle shoulder-season hikes or winter campouts. The Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody also nails the balance, as it is more fitted than previous versions but still roomy enough to layer, and works equally well on snowy trails or under a shell at the resort.

If you’re looking for maximum warmth and space to layer underneath, the Rab Neutrino Pro delivers. Down vs. Synthetic

Most of the jackets in this guide are made with down, though a handful are filled with synthetic insulation that mimics down or a blend of the two. For example, both Arc’teryx models we tested, the Cerium and the Thorium, use synthetic insulation in places that tend to get wet, so they stay loftier and keep you warm even when you get wet.

Synthetic insulation, on the other hand, is made from polyester fibers and designed to imitate down clusters and properties with a few key differences. If you compare two jackets of equal weight, down is warmer than this alternative. But synthetic insulation retains warmth even when wet. It’s also easier to wash and usually comes at a lower price point.

Overall, synthetics can be a better, safer choice in wet or mixed weather and when weight isn’t an issue. Active insulation is best for high-output action. Many down jackets now balance performance with eco-conscious design. Look for certifications like the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or Patagonia’s Traceable Down to ensure ethically sourced insulation. Without them, animal welfare in the supply chain isn’t guaranteed.

Brands are also stepping up with recycled fabrics, PFC-free DWR coatings, and Fair Trade Certified sewing. Weight

The Rab Mythic Ultra, with its 900-fill-power down insulation, really stands out for its excellent warmth for the weight. We weighed the men’s size Large that we tested at 17.4 ounces — and this jacket is as warm or warmer than many others in the 20- to 23-ounce range.

Super-lightweight down jackets typically come with a premium price tag, but the investment can be worthwhile for adventurers with limited space looking to trim ounces. Models like the Feathered Friends Eos strike a solid balance between lightweight simplicity and premium performance.

If speed and efficiency are of utmost importance, jackets like this won’t hold you back. Make sure to research the full range temperatures you will encounter on your trips before leaving, however, and don’t prioritize an ultralight base weight so much that you put yourself in danger.

Storing and Caring For Down Jackets

Some of these down jackets can compress to the size of a water bottle or smaller, while others are bulkier — influenced by the fill, face fabric, and overall design. A tiny pack size can allow you to carry a smaller, lighter load on lightweight excursions, but make sure to not leave your down jacket smushed up for long periods of time. This can greatly impact the down’s lofting and insulating abilities, and reduce the jacket’s overall lifespan.

It’s fine to keep your jacket in its stuff sack for one or two days at a time, but try to pull it out of the sack regularly and let it loft up fully over the duration of your trip. When storing your jacket after you get home, hang it in your closet — and don’t mash it too tightly between your other clothes. It’s easy to spend $250-500 on a down jacket. And that’s no small investment. The main thing to consider when looking at your budget is the end use.

There aren’t many options in this category. If you’re regularly packing into the backcountry, an ultralight, super-packable, rather expensive jacket may be necessary. If you’ll mostly wear it around town or for light trail use, something like the budget-friendly REI 650 Down Jacket will keep you warm for just over $100.

Mid-Tier

Most down jackets on our list range from $280 to $400. With this increase in price, you’ll typically see an increase in fill power and fill weight, which translates to an increase in warmth. Even our best pick for backcountry skiing, the Rab Microlight Windstopper Down Hoody ($340) and our top ultralight pick, the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer ($380) fall in this range.

Mid-tier jackets like our most durable pick, the Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown Hoody ($320), also have more features, including added pockets, adjustable hoods, weather-resistant materials, and more. While this may seem like a ton to pay for a jacket, with proper treatment, jackets in this tier should last long enough to be worth the investment.

Premium

These jackets, which range from $409 and above, tend to be designed for adventures or expeditions in frigid temperatures. They are often weather-resistant and more durable, as well. However, if you’re going to throw down this much for a jacket, you’ll want to be sure you have the need for it. We typically grab these jackets atop high peaks in mid-winter before skiing down or when we’re tackling technical objectives in Nepal or Alaska. They’re also ideal for when you’re going to be stationary in freezing temps; think ice fishing, ice climbing, your kid’s football game in December, or belaying.

An exception to this rule is The North Face Summit Series Breithorn Hoodie ($430). It was a unicorn of sorts: light enough for moderate activity on cold days, but warm enough for standing around, too.

I have a standard 2- to 3-week international work itinerary. It takes 32 hours of travel to get to my office in northern Uganda from my home in Oregon. I pack everything for these trips into a 44L bag, so space is at a premium.

The Roark Layover Pro Traveler Pants: Review

Roark’s previous version of its Layover pant earned a lot of accolades, and rightfully so, as it was a solid choice for daily wear and long-haul travel alike. So, when the brand went to update the pants, it had a solid challenge on its hands. 

The newest iteration adds a new fabric, belt loops, and a no-show elastic waistband, which balance increased comfort, improved performance, and a more versatile style. After months of daily use, I can say this: Roark nailed it.

Key Updates

Roark made several significant upgrades to the Layover Pro Traveler. First and foremost is the fabric. They’ve shifted to a certified organic cotton-based fabric, called Embarq Dura-Stretch Twill Fabric. It’s 59% cotton for a refined look and cooling properties, 30% polyamide (basically nylon) for durability and structure, and 11% elastane for a luxurious stretch.

I’ve found this fabric to be ideal for long travel days and adventures of all sorts in warm climates. Though it lacks a DWR coating, I’ve found that it cleans up easily and dries quickly, whether you’re spot cleaning after getting (briefly) stuck in the mud or doing a quick wash in the sink for use the next day. It remains very comfortable while still falling nicely and not looking too casual when I need to step into a meeting. 

Next on the list are belt loops. This was my biggest complaint in previous iterations of Roark’s travel pants. I love the drawstring that comes with these pants, but I always opt for a TSA-friendly belt and prefer the fit and feel of a belt over a drawstring. 

With the Layover Pro Traveler, Roark also transitioned to Hybrid Alpha sizing (S-XXL). I’m typically always on the fence between M and L, and I went with a large here. I’m happy I did: Thankfully the days of skinny pants are largely over, and the L fits me really well (I’m typically a 32 or 33 in numeric sizing, 6’1’’ / 180 pounds for reference).

Tested Across Africa

The first time I wore these pants, it was over 2 days of travel. After four flights and a 6-hour road trip to get to my destination, I was pretty much sold.

The travel-specific features, such as the cell stash back pocket and zippered front and back pockets, kept everything I needed secure and easy to access while moving through the airport. The back cell pocket is big enough for my iPhone 16 Pro to be fully concealed and remain quickly accessible. 

The zippered front pockets were a welcome feature when sitting down. My AirPod case stayed put, rather than threatening to fall out, for example. These zips were also clutch when moving through zones where I didn’t want anyone else to access my pockets, or even be tempted to do so. 

I wore these pants during plane travel, but they also formed the backbone of my wardrobe during a trip that ranged from all-day drives to working in remote villages to fine dining in Cape Town to family BBQs and hikes. The fit and finish of these pants proved to be wildly versatile, and they served me well. 

One feature that I enjoyed the most was the waistband. It’s elastic, but it’s concealed, so it doesn’t look elastic. This makes it very comfortable after sitting in a car or airplane for a long time and offers great freedom of movement when you’re out and about as well. 

Lastly, the back panel has laser perforations for even more ventilation in the heat. When I wore these pants alongside other options, the difference was noticeable. Many manufacturers simply pack pants with features that aren’t actually helpful; that is not the case with the Roark Layover Pro Travelers.

Room for Improvement

These pants would be perfect with one change: I’d prefer a concealed zippered thigh-pocket instead of zippered hand pockets. There are a few manufacturers that do this type of hidden zippered pocket really well. It allows for a secure pocket to store a wallet or AirPods that you want to prevent from being taken or falling out, while leaving the hand pockets more comfortable for your actual hands. 

In my experience, this type of pocket is also easier to open and close while sitting than the zippered hand pockets. And, it doesn’t look like a cargo pocket either, which would work for the aesthetic that Roark is going for here. 

Additionally, these pants are pretty lightweight. This makes them perfect for airplane and vehicle-based travel, and they thrive in warm temperatures. However, keep that in mind if you are traveling to a cold destination. Luckily, Roark offers a Layover Utility Pant ($115) made from a heavier fabric for that use case. 

Roark Layover Pro Traveler Pants: Conclusion

As I mentioned at the top, I don’t love testing brand-new gear like the Roark Layover Pro Travelers on consequential trips. Once I find something I can rely on, I typically use it until it becomes unwearable or unrepairable. This makes the bar pretty high to earn a spot in my daily rotation, much less a big trip when I’m packing light. 

These updated travel pants, however, surprised me with just how reliable they were right out of the gate. The new fabric strikes an excellent balance between breathability and durability, the pocket setup is near-perfect, and the fit is spot-on for long days in the saddle.

I’m heading to Southern California for a quick trip next week. The fall temps are still pretty warm down there, so I bet you can guess which pants I’ll be wearing.

First Impressions

I’m one of those people with sensitive skin who thinks wool, even merino, feels like wearing a cactus. So I expected the usual itch. But right out of the box, these felt different. The rib knit is soft and smooth, like something I would reach for on a lazy Sunday morning. Pulling them on felt like slipping into comfortable pajamas instead of technical hunting gear.

The rib knit stretches and snaps back clean. Twisting, stretching, and squatting feel natural. The fit leans thin without that stuffed-in-a-sausage squeeze. It’s the kind of profile that slides under hunting pants without bunching or making you feel like the Michelin Man. That alone feels like a small victory.

Before I ever stepped into the woods, I figured these would excel during long, quiet sits where comfort matters more than style points. They felt warm in hand but surprisingly light, which had me wondering how they’d perform once the temperatures dropped and the wind started to bite.

Field Testing During the Whitetail Rut

I ran these base layer pieces through their paces during North Carolina’s whitetail rut. Mornings started with fast pre-dawn hikes that had me pushing hard and breaking a sweat even though the mercury sat in the 20s.

With the wind sometimes playing hardball, those beads of sweat that formed on the trek in became a real gamble, especially since everything slowed down once I was settled in a treestand, where the goal is staying still. My body cooled fast. Blood flow dropped. That early sweat could have wrecked the day if the base layer didn’t manage moisture well.

Some mornings came with a light rain that soaked outer layers and made warmth a moving target. By mid-afternoon, the temperature sometimes swung into the 60s and sometimes low 70s on the hike back to the truck.

Those big swings can turn a lot of base layers into the swampy river bottoms I was hunting, but these Pakas stayed comfy even when damp. The rib knit breathes well enough that I didn’t feel like I needed to peel it off halfway through the walk.

The rut doesn’t leave much time for laundry, so I wore this base layer for a solid week. Sweat happens, and so does camp funk, but these held up better than I expected. By day seven, they still didn’t knock anyone out of the truck cab, and more importantly, they didn’t give a doe any extra reason to blow the hunt.

This setup held its own without feeling heavy or clammy, which is exactly what you want during the rut when you never know how long you’ll be in that stand.

Fit and Comfort

The Thermal Crew fits close enough to stay out of the way but never feels glued on. Thermal pants have a wide waistband that stays put and doesn’t roll or pinch. Everything ran true to size for me. The flatlock seams help the whole system stay comfortable under safety harness straps or when stacked with other layers.

The Tencel component of the fabric blend provides a nice amount of stretch and helps it dry fast when you start cooking on the hike in. It also adds a slight cooling effect. That sounds strange for a cold-weather hunt, but it comes in handy when you’re grinding uphill and doing everything you can to avoid sweating yourself into trouble.

The fabric feels soft at first touch, though it’s not some fantasy silk number. There’s a hint of prickliness in a few spots. I noticed it behind the knees, inside the elbows, and in the armpits, mostly when I moved around. It practically disappeared when I was sitting still. But once I was parked 20 feet up a pine for a 5-hour sit with nothing but squirrels for entertainment, my brain found plenty of time to poke at that tiny itch.

Durability

These base layers held up well over a week of hunting without a wash, which is exactly what you want when the rut doesn’t leave time for laundry. That said, they are not dryer-friendly. You need patience and a flat surface to lay them out and let them dry.

I got careless, mostly because I’m impatient and somewhat irresponsible when it comes to laundry. I like to toss all of my hunting clothes into one load. The trip through the dryer didn’t kill them, but they did stretch out just a bit. It’s not a total deal breaker, and they aren’t destined for the trash can, but it’s disappointing when a high-end base layer starts sagging after a single mistake.

I’m also slightly disappointed with the lack of reinforced panels in high-abrasion areas like the knees, elbows, and between the legs. Sitting in a treestand doesn’t put much stress on those spots. I worry these might not hold up as well on hunts that require crawling over rough terrain or through heavy brush. For stand-hunting, though, they should last plenty long (as long as they avoid the dryer).

Where They Excel

These base layers shine in situations where comfort and warmth matter. Long, motionless sits in a treestand seems to be their jam. The rib knit also stretches and recovers nicely, so they don’t feel restrictive, even during the climb into the stand.

They’re soft against the skin without the pesky itch of traditional wool. While there is the slightest bit of prickliness against soft body parts, it’s still a major win for anyone with sensitive skin. The slim fit is perfect for multi-layers, and they slide under hunting pants without the typical bunching or bulky feel.

Moisture management and breathability were also impressive. Even after a sweaty hike in near-freezing temps, the fabric handled dampness like a champ and kept me cozy even as my body cooled fast in the stand. And they resisted odor for a week straight without a trip through the wash.

In short, if you’re looking for a warm, comfortable base layer that wicks moisture when you’re active and helps regulate body temperature when you’re sitting still for hours in cold weather, these are tough to beat.

Where They Fall Short

These baselayers aren’t perfect. They’re pricey, for starters. They also require a little forethought on wash day. You can’t just move these from the washer to the dryer with your other hunting gear. They need to be dried flat. or you risk losing their shape. I learned the hard way, and while it didn’t ruin the set, I was bummed that they didn’t fit as they did straight out of the package.

Durability in high-abrasion areas, like the knees, elbows, and between the legs, could be a problem on active hunts. Sitting in a treestand doesn’t stress those spots, but if your idea of a good time involves crawling over brush and rocks, these might not be your best option.

In short, they shine for sitting-still comfort but aren’t designed for rugged, high-movement hunts or anyone who prefers ultra-low-maintenance laundry.

Final Thoughts

Paka’s Thermal Baselayer pieces aren’t cheap. But the soft, stretchy material delivers warmth, comfort, and odor control that works on long, cold, motionless sits in a deer stand. You’ll need to remember to treat it right on wash day. These may survive a trip through the dryer, but they won’t fit quite the same.
