If you ask him, James Nash says he’s just a normal American guy with an abnormally organized truckbed, thanks to DECKED’s drawer systems.

He grew up on an Oregon ranch, trapping gophers and working as a pack horse hunting guide in high school. He also wrestled so well that he moved to Norway for a year to train professionally. 

His career choices varied after that. He earned a college scholarship for riding rodeo broncos, and paid the rest of his tuition by working as a wildland firefighter in the summer. He rappelled from helicopters deep in the wilderness to fight fires with a rake rather than water. 

Later, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and deployed to Afghanistan to command a tank platoon. He used a 76-ton tank as his daily driver. Now, he favors a pick-up with DECKED drawers a-plenty. Where better to keep his scopes and ammo than in a Mossy Oak Honcho case?

The first video of this new standalone vertical launched over the weekend, a product of careful thought and planning by the creators.

“We launched the first video for our newest vertical: Dude Perfect Outdoors. This has been a passion project for a select few; almost three years in the making, and the last six months of grinding to get it over the line,” producer Chad Terrell said in announcing the project.

Though it’s not the brand’s first foray into outdoor storytelling, the team confirmed Dude Perfect Outdoors will be a venture with purpose, and target families who want something healthier and more grounded than another night of scrolling.

Get Folks Outside: Channel With a Mission

Dude Perfect Outdoors fits into a pattern that’s been developing for years. The brand first stepped into outdoor storytelling through collaborations, including a multiseason partnership with Columbia Sportswear that pushed filming into weather and terrain that can’t be controlled.

Columbia framed those projects as “epic adventures,” which gave a clean starting foundation for what the crew’s now doing on its own channel. But the launch of Dude Perfect Outdoors isn’t just an offshoot of previous efforts. It reflects the crew’s own history.

Matt Deimund, who works on strategy for Dude Perfect, explained the roots of the project in a launch post.

“I grew up hunting and fishing in western Oklahoma with my dad and brothers, and few things in life are as meaningful or as memorable as that time we all spent together,” he said in the post.

Deimund went on to explain how the new channel aims to help families build that same kind of time outside, with less noise and fewer screens.

Already a Hit

The first video on the brand’s new YouTube channel went up over the weekend, and audience numbers took off fast.

“This launched yesterday morning and already has 55k subscribers. The first video has over 250k views in less than 24 hours,” Scott Winkler said in a LinkedIn post about the launch.

The debut episode, “Dude Perfect Takes Intern on First Hunt,” leans into something that feels distinctly different than what many might expect from the brand. Instead of trick shots and cool camera angles, the first video carries a familiar outdoor hunting and fishing show feel, complete with a hunt, banter, and time spent around the campfire.

So, Is It Any Good?

I’ll admit I had a moment of hesitation when a stunt-driven entertainment brand stepped into hunting and fishing. Outdoor work deserves a tone that respects the resource. It can’t lean on slapstick or shock value (that’s coming from someone who has a hard time taking anything very seriously).

So far, Dude Perfect Outdoors seems to understand that. The content carries far less chaos than the main channel and leans into steady, respectful field time instead of gags.

If the vertical keeps that tone, it may bring new viewers into the outdoors without dragging in the noise that usually comes with internet fame. Hopefully, it’ll get a few more kids off their tablets and into the real world.

And if stunt shots come into play, I’ll be the first to cry fowl. For now, I’ll keep my optimism cautious, but hopeful.

There are plenty of things you expect to fight offshore: Wind. waves, the occasional bout of seasickness. But your own balance should not be one of them.

I’d prepared myself to be physically wrecked after 2 days on the water. Turns out, I was only a little wrecked, and it had nothing to do with the ocean beating me up.

In short: The Dometic DG3 turned rough seas into workable water, reduced fatigue, and kept everyone upright when conditions wanted the opposite. How a Gyro Works on a Boat

For those unaware, a marine gyro works by spinning a heavy flywheel at high speed to create angular momentum. When the boat begins to roll, the gyro resists that motion by forcing the spinning mass to move in the opposite direction.

The Dometic DG3 uses an all-electric precession system instead of the hydraulic designs found on older models. This change reduces maintenance and complexity. There are no fluid lines, no hydraulic pumps, and no messy service intervals.

The DG3’s power management system draws from a dedicated battery to avoid overloading the boat’s electrical network during spool-up. It also recovers part of that energy during spin-down instead of dumping it as heat. The result is a system that gets to work faster, runs cleaner, and needs less upkeep than many of its competitors.

Testing Day One: Dry Tortugas

The DG3 met real weather in the Florida Keys. A recent hurricane had churned the ocean, leaving rolling 4- to 5-foot swells and steady wind. Day one began early in Key West with a long run, 2 to 3 hours each way, to Dry Tortugas National Park. The weather played relatively nice in the beginning with blue skies and calm water.

We explored the old brick walls of Fort Jefferson first, wandering the edges where the Atlantic meets the Gulf. The boat stayed steady through it all. The gyro worked quietly in the background, smoothing every shift of the hull.

Later that afternoon, we anchored near a shallow wreck for a bit of snorkeling. I spent some time in the water alongside a goliath grouper the size of a small car, and while the experience was incredible, it was also dizzying.

The movement of the water certainly picked up. The surge tossed me in every direction, which is totally unfamiliar to me, being a “mountain folk” and all. Back on the boat, the difference was immediate. The motion felt calm again, and for the first time, I realized how much the DG3 had been doing all day. The water had not changed. The technology had.

The ride back to Key West came with short, choppy waves that would normally send bodies swaying and gear sliding. Instead, everything felt contained. Even in the roughest sections, we could walk across the deck without grabbing for support. The system made the difference between managing a trip and enduring one.

Testing Day Two: Open Water and Outages

The second day was the real test. We set out to fish in open water, and the conditions turned into exactly what we needed for a full shakedown. Strong wind, rolling water, and, as luck would have it, constant power problems. The outages had nothing to do with the DG3 itself but created the kind of test no one could plan for.

When the boat lost power, the gyro shut off, and the world immediately tilted. Everyone grabbed for balance. Buckets slid. Rods clattered. Swells threw the deck from side to side.

Each time the power returned, the DG3 spun back up fast. The short startup time saved us from what could have been a long, miserable day. With other gyros, we would have been stuck waiting for half an hour or longer to regain stability.

Instead, within minutes, the deck settled and work resumed. Those quick recoveries turned what might have been chaos into a manageable rhythm.

The difference between the system on and off was sharp. With the DG3 running, you could move freely, tie knots, and keep your footing when big waves hit. When it was off, every step became a battle against gravity. Even those who were not paying attention could tell the moment it came online again.

By the end of the trip, fatigue told the story. Usually, a day in rough water leaves my body aching from hours of keeping myself upright. This time, the usual exhaustion never came. I felt steady, even relaxed, after two full days of unpredictable water. The DG3 did not calm the sea, but it changed how the sea felt underfoot, and that made all the difference.

Dometic DG3 vs. the Competition

The Dometic DG3 competes directly with the Seakeeper 3 and the Quick MC² Quick Gyro 10. All three aim to reduce roll on boats in the 35- to 40-foot range, yet they take different approaches to get there.

The Seakeeper 3 relies on hydraulics and takes roughly 45 to 50 minutes to reach full speed. Once up to speed, it performs well but takes much longer to recover after a shutdown. A full spool-up delay can be frustrating when a power interruption happens offshore.

The Quick MC² Quick Gyro 10 is electric, which simplifies maintenance, but it draws heavier power during startup and weighs more overall. It also has a slightly larger footprint, making installation more difficult on boats with limited machinery space.

The DG3 separates itself through speed, efficiency, and size. Its all-electric precession design means no hydraulic components to maintain. It reaches stabilization in about 16 minutes, spins down in under 20, and draws less power once at speed. It is quieter in operation, easier to service, and fits into tighter spaces than the other two options.

Like all gyros, it still depends on boat power to function, but the DG3’s rapid restart helps it recover faster after an outage. Seakeeper maintains a broader service network, yet Dometic’s simplicity and responsiveness give it the edge in practical use.

Drawbacks

The DG3 solves a long list of problems, yet it brings a few of its own. Cost sits at the top of that list. The unit alone is more than $40,000, and that number climbs once you factor in installation, electrical integration, and any structural reinforcement your boat might need.

This is a serious investment for owners who spend serious time offshore. Anyone looking for a casual comfort upgrade will feel the price long before they feel the stabilization.

The second drawback is weight. At 570 pounds, the DG3 is not small and not light. That weight must sit low and be fully supported, which adds pressure to find the right installation point.

Space on mid-size boats is always a puzzle, and adding something this heavy can change how the boat trims and handles if it is not placed perfectly. It is a manageable drawback, yet it is not one you can ignore.

Both issues matter, but neither changes the fact that the DG3 performs as advertised. The cost limits who will consider it, and the weight demands careful planning. For the right boat and the right owner, the tradeoffs still make sense.

Who’s It For?

The DG3 suits midsize offshore boats that regularly run in open water, where roll control makes the difference between comfort and chaos. Charter captains, serious anglers, dive operators, and anyone who spends long days offshore will find real benefit. I’m thinking strictly for those whose office is on the water and are tired of being tired from just trying to keep themselves upright.

If your boat rarely leaves protected bays, the investment might not make sense. Unless you’re the type of person with a wallet that won’t notice, who doesn’t want your mimosa to topple. For anyone who chases fish on the regular or adventures beyond calm waters routinely, the DG3 earns its keep.

Final Thoughts

The Dometic DG3 is certainly not a simple accessory added lightly. It is a performance tool that changes how a boat behaves

when the weather stops cooperating. After two full days in heavy chop, I can say it reduced fatigue, increased comfort, and kept us productive when we might have otherwise called it early.

It delivers faster startup, lower maintenance, and true usability for midsize boats that need reliable stabilization. The DG3 carries a price tag that starts over $40,000 and moves up quickly, which makes it a serious investment. That figure covers the unit itself but not the installation, structural work, or electrical integration required to run it. For most owners, it is a professional-grade addition that demands proper setup and support.

That said, once installed, it pays off every time the wind picks up and the water stops behaving. The DG3 makes hard water manageable and long days feel shorter.

First Impressions

If you use an iPhone, then you know what I mean when I say that unboxing something new can be an experience. And boy, opening the Blue Line Project TR was an experience. Everything was dialed from start to finish, right down to the included reel case adorned with the Colorado State symbol. And then you get to the reel itself, and it is an absolute stunner.

The onWater blue line topo looks dynamic against the black reel, putting itself into a whole different category for me. The blue handle and understated Abel branding are the icing on the cake.

And there is something about the unapologetic sound of a click-pawl fly reel. It sounds right, like the sound of a fire crackling as you drift off to sleep, or when you wake up and can hear bacon sizzling in the other room. And the feel when you turn it over is smoother than calm waters at dawn. Needless to say, I was itching to get on the water and put it to the test immediately.

The Process

The process is simple and takes place on the onWater site. You share your email, and then access to the build page is accessed via a code in your inbox. From there, you have the option to choose between a black or white base reel color before proceeding to choose your favorite river within the onWater app. You “drag and drop” the area of the river system you want to show on your reel and confirm the design.

There are additional options to add titanium components, as well as Airflo line and line weights. Finally, you choose your reel weight (ranging from ⅔ to ⅚) and you’re on your way.

My reel was delivered in about 3 weeks. I dropped by Mend Provisions to have them add backing line, added a floating line and tippet, and hit the water.

The Abel Blue Line TR: Put to the Test

I’ve been using my Abel Blue Line TR since late summer, and fishing it for everything from bass and pike to panfish and trout. My proximity to good trout streams is limited while living in a metropolitan area, so I took to the local metro lakes to get some reps in with the reel chasing hungry Bass and passing Northern Pike.

Immediately, you can feel that this is a high-quality reel, highlighted by the click-and-pawl sound that hits like a rare songbird right out of the gate. If for nothing else, I love it for the sound it makes. Combining this with their classic aesthetic, it’s hard to deny that this reel is special.

Sounds Good, Looks Good, Reels Good

It’s more than just a sound and alluring aesthetic, though. The reel has almost no startup inertia when a bigger fish takes your fly and starts ripping line. It makes for a smooth bite-to-fight experience and makes you feel connected to the fish.

Adding to the traditional look and feel of this reel, it relies on manual drag to slow a fish down. There is a pronounced palming ring that is deliberately shaped to control drag pressure in whatever fishing condition you find yourself in — no adjustment needed.

The reel handled all of the trout and panfish I caught, which, to be fair, isn’t saying a ton. Panfish and trout near home aren’t exactly massive. They are fun to chase and a blast to catch, but don’t necessarily strain gear.

However, when catching sporty bass on the lakes, it was a joy to feel an immediate connection to the fish and feel the reel smoothly letting out line while I eased on the pressure with my palm. The sound and sensation just feel right.

The reel is lightweight and has an integrated “precision-balanced clicker” on the spool that eliminates the need for a counterweight, adding to the no-frills look. The large arbor helps in keeping memory from the line and improves the retrieval rate when you’re ripping line back in as quickly as you can. The simplicity and quality craftsmanship of the Abel TR are evident right out of the box, and they set this reel apart from the masses.

Nothing Is Perfect

There’s a lot to love about the Blue Line Project TR, but there are a few things a potential buyer should know before getting in too deep. Firstly, the reel is only available in ⅔, ¾, and ⅘. There are no options larger than that, and it doesn’t appear that it will change.

For the majority of my fly fishing adventures close to home, that’s no biggie. However, for anglers in areas with consistently bigger fish, this may be limiting. The steelhead run in Minnesota is one of my favorite times of year to get out fishing, and unfortunately, this reel will have to stay home for that trip.

Second, it is worth mentioning that the arbor on the reel is a little shallow, limiting how much backing can be put on the reel. I went into Mend Provisions to have the backing added, and the shop owner brought up the same thing. It’s not a huge issue as long as you know what you’re getting into beforehand.

Finally, it’s expensive: $695 puts it into the top-end category for a reel, and you’re still looking at further purchases of a rod, backing, line, etc, to hit the water. I would love it if there were a more budget-friendly option to supplement this reel for those who want to be involved with the Blue Line Project but don’t have the coin. That being said, this is a custom reel from one of the most reputable reel brands in the industry, and custom is never cheap.

Final Thoughts

A custom reel for over $600 isn’t for everybody, and that’s expected. If you are someone who can shop in this price range, the Blue Line Project TR is worth considering. Abel crafts it with precision in Colorado, and the purchase sends a portion straight to Trout Unlimited.

Not only do you get a high-end reel from Abel, but you also add a custom reel that is unique to you to your arsenal. With additional access to the onWater app, you may just find a new honey hole that’s off the beaten path.

The search for a missing California fisherman came to a tragic end this week. Mikey Rijavec, a San Diego–based angler with a large following on social media, went missing on Nov. 11 while fishing alone off the coast of Southern California. That led to a massive rescue effort that included both U.S. and Mexican authorities.

But the search ended when Rijavec’s body was found in the water this week near San Cristobal, Mexico, according to an update on a GoFundMe page raising money for the search efforts.

Gregory Rijavec, Mikey’s brother, wrote on Nov. 16 that the “countless people involved in the search for Mikey to finally rest and begin to find peace.” Even now, the circumstances that led to Mikey’s death are not fully clear.

“As difficult as it is to accept this, we are grateful that it provides us some closure,” Gregory wrote. “As we begin to process and reflect on what has happened over the last several days, it is clear what was at the core of the search for Mikey: love. Everyone poured everything into finding Mikey, because whether they knew him or not, they knew a son, a brother, a friend, a fisherman, a fellow human needed help. Everyone has been extremely selfless during this time, and selflessness is one of the greatest acts of love.”

A Massive Search

Authorities knew very quickly that something had likely gone wrong during Mikey’s fishing trip. He was about 8 miles off the California coast in a Solo Skiff when he issued a mayday call about 3 p.m. on Nov. 11, according to his brother. Fellow anglers were on the radio trying to help Mikey with some engine trouble when the call suddenly ended, NBC San Diego reported.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican Navy both participated in search efforts, using a combination of boats and aircraft. Even many local fishermen got involved. The day the search began, Mikey’s 14-foot boat was recovered 5 miles off the coast, but searchers found neither Mikey nor the skiff’s engine.

The GoFundMe page started by Gregory raised more than $40,000 to cover the cost of gas and pilots: “Good vibes to Mikey and stay positive!” Gregory wrote for the initial fundraising campaign. On Thursday, it was still unclear who actually found Mikey’s body.

Mikey had cultivated a large following on social media, especially on his YouTube channel SD Fish and Sips, where he had racked up 21,000 subscribers and more than 4.5 million views of his fishing videos.

Field & Stream has been around for over 100 years, and now it’s entering the 21st century. The media company announced that it’s partnering with Outdoor America to launch a 24/7 television network.

The move is the latest part of Field & Stream’s growth strategy since it relaunched in 2024, with the help of big-name investors like Eric Church and Morgan Wallen.

The Partnership

Outdoor America is a streaming platform aimed at hunters and anglers. Its current programming slate includes shows like Pure Hunting, Big Buck Blueprint, and Beyond the Grid. It’s available online, through broadcast TV, and via FAST TV.

Field & Stream, which has been around since 1871, started as a print publication, and has grown through its podcasts, website, and social media.

“The Field & Stream name represents the gold standard of authenticity in the outdoors,” Nick Rhodes, CEO of Outdoor America, said in a press release. “Together we’re building a world-class outdoor lifestyle network with premium programming, dynamic partnerships and a global vision.”

The Channel

The companies have not yet announced a lineup of shows, but they’ve hinted at the type of content that will be available. According to a press release, “Field & Stream TV will bridge the worlds of outdoor pursuits and authentic American culture.”

The brand plans to work with outdoor influencers, sports figures, and musicians like Church and Wallen to produce shows. Field & Stream will release more information about the line-up at the SHOT Show in January 2026.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Outdoor America team to launch Field & Stream TV with a powerful and immediate distribution footprint,” Doug McNamee, President of Field & Stream, said.

“This partnership allows us to tell more stories that celebrate life outdoors — through new, exclusive programming and an unmatched ability to reach audiences and sponsors across every channel. It’s a defining step in Field & Stream’s continued evolution.”
